Purpose– This paper aims to introduce a comprehensive conceptual framework to study the influence of “consumer ambivalence towards contraception” and “intercourse frequency” along with attitudes toward contraception and satisfaction with most familiar contraceptive method, on contraceptive usage and intentions.Design/methodology/approach– A team of trained female interviewers used a structured questionnaire to conduct a clinic-intercept survey with 588 sexually active female consumers in two major hospitals and six randomly chosen clinics in Singapore (response rate = 29 per cent).Findings– Consumer attitudes toward contraception, satisfaction with most familiar contraceptive method and intercourse frequency have a positive effect on contraceptive usage. Consumer ambivalence toward contraception has a negative effect on usage and intentions and it negatively moderates the effects of attitudes, satisfaction and intercourse frequency.Research limitations/implications– This paper explo...

Background Modern Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is very safe, highly effective reversible and inexpensive family planning method which offers 5-10 years of protection against pregnancy. The contraceptive use in Pakistan has been merely 30% for over a decade with IUCD being the least used method. Higher discontinuation rates are documented in developing countries; however no such data is available for Pakistan. Marie Stopes Society (MSS) established a social franchise outlets network branded as 'SURAJ' (Sun) in Pakistan to provide quality family planning services. This study attempts to determine IUCD discontinuation rates and its associated risk factors. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 3000 clients who availed IUCD services from Suraj provider 6, 12 and 24 month back,. Data were analyzed in SPSS 17.0; adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated to see associations between discontinuation and its risk factors. Case p...

Objective: To test the hypothesis that the free L-carnitine helps in maintaining normal fertility. Methods: The present descriptive study was designed to show comparison of seminal free L-carnitine and sperm quality. Case controlled convenient sampling was used to assess infertile male subjects from fertile. A total of 61 adult males were selected by consent, and were categorized as fertile and infertile on the basis of history and semen analysis. Subjects were selected from Infertility Clinic, Reproductive Health Services Centre of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi. Subject's with history of pelvic surgery, or suffering from diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases or using steroids, antihypertensives and antipsychotics drugs were excluded from the study. Groups were compared using student's t-test and p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The mean values of sperm count, total motility and normal morphology of asthenospermic and oligoastheno...

To predict the need of family planning methods, family planning managers often rely on unmet need derived from measure of contraceptive demand. However women's intention and her background knowledge of family planning methods not received as much attention as a measure of family planning methods demand. To know the attitude of women regarding use of family planning methods and to find out the factors that restricts its use, and the change in pattern of use over a period of one year. This was a prospective study. One (Block G) out of eight blocks was selected randomly. Using convenient sample method, families were selected starting from a point in the selected block (Block G). 40 women of childbearing age group (15- 49 years) were enrolled. All women were followed for a period of one year. Weakness was narrated as the commonest side effect from all family planning methods. More than 70% women told that irregular menstruation from Oral Contraceptive pills and ill health from tubec...

By denying the binary structure of sexuality, gender ideology suppresses women’s rights in many areas of life. However, gender ideology fails the test of reality put to it by the very adherents of this theory, for the majority of them support the binary division of gender. The transgender movement is a cultural meme that affects the most psychologically vulnerable youths. The disproportionate number of girls who strive to become men seems to be connected with the objectification of girls in the mainstream culture – an attitude springing from the ideology of sexual revolution and its most important technical tool: the contraceptive pill.

This study aims to examine the influence of the perception of social marketing of condoms and education on condom use resistance behavior among sex workers in N'Djamena. It is based on the general assumption that the perception of condom social marketing and the level of education of sex workers determine their resistance to condom use. To test this hypothesis, we adopted a quantitative approach. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. This has enabled us to create a final sample of 100 subjects. The measuring instrument that used to collect data in the field is the questionnaire. The statistical technique used for data processing is the chi-square. The results indicate, first, that the perception of social marketing of condoms significantly influence the wear condoms resistance among sex workers and, secondly, that the level of sex workers of instruction determines their resistance to the condom port during the sexual act.

In the coming decades, West African countries could benefit from a “demographic window of opportunity” in order to reduce their poverty. The entry of 160 million young people into the labor market between 2010 and 2030 can accelerate economic growth. However, these countries will only benefit from this “demographic dividend” – which the now emerging countries have been doing for the past 40 years – if they lower their fertility rates. This in turn will reduce the number of inactive dependents per worker. Yet with an average of over five children per woman, these rates continue to be the highest in the world.

OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of sexual initiation and contraceptive use at the last sexual intercourse of Brazilian adolescents, according to sociodemographic features. METHODS The data were obtained from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), a national school-based cross-sectional study. We included 74,589 adolescents from 32 geographic strata (27 capitals and five sets of municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants of each of the five macro-regions of the Country). Information on sexual initiation and contraceptive use at the last sexual intercourse (male condom and oral contraceptive pill) has been used. We have estimated prevalence and confidence intervals (95%CI) considering sample weights according to sex, age, type of school, residence status, macro-region and capitals. RESULTS We observed that 28.1% (95%CI 27.0-29.2) of the adolescents had already initiated sexual life, with higher prevalence among those aged 17 years (56.4%, 95%CI 53.9-58.9...

We evaluated initial cervical dilation with the addition of oral mifepristone to vaginal misoprostol as cervical preparation for same-daysecond-trimester dilation and evacuation (D&E). Women desiring abortion between gestational ages 14weeks 0days and 19weeks 6days were randomized to 200-mg mifepristone or identical placebo immediately followed by 400-mcg misoprostol vaginally 4-6h prior to D&E. Primary outcome was cervical dilation assessed by largest Hegar dilator passed without resistance. Secondary outcomes included total procedure time and participant and provider perceptions. We had 90% power to detect a 2-mm change in initial cervical dilation with a mean of 10mm (SD=3.0mm), requiring 48 participants in each arm. Of 100 women enrolled, 96 were randomized and completed the study. Age, race, gestational age (mean 17.4weeks, SD=1.3) and parity did not significantly differ. Mean initial Hegar dilation measurements were 11.7 and 10.9mm in the mifepristone and placebo groups, respe...
