Sex steroids and thyroid hormones play a key role in the development of the central nervous system. The critical role of these hormonal systems may explain the sensitivity of the hypothalamus, the cerebral cortex, and the hippocampus to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC). This review examines the evidence for endocrine disruption of glial–neuronal functions in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, and cerebral cortex. Focus was placed on two well-studied EDC, the insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). DDT is involved in neuroendocrine disruption of the reproductive axis, whereas polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) interact with both the thyroid hormone- and sex steroid-dependent systems and disturb the neuroendocrine control of reproduction and development of hippocampus and cortex. These results highlight the impact of EDC on the developing nervous system and the need for more research in this area.

We have shown that pulmonary exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) impairs endothelium dependent dilation in systemic arterioles. Ultrafine PM has been suggested to be inherently more toxic by virtue of its increased surface area. The purpose of this study was to determine if ultrafine PM (or nanoparticle) inhalation produces greater microvascular dysfunction than fine PM. Rats were exposed to fine or ultrafine TiO2 aerosols (primary particle diameters of ~1 mum and ~21 nm, respectively) at concentrations which do not alter bronchoalveolar lavage markers of pulmonary inflammation or lung damage. By histopathologic evaluation, no significant inflammatory changes were seen in the lung. However, particle-containing macrophages were frequently seen in intimate contact with the alveolar wall. The spinotrapezius muscle was prepared for in vivo microscopy 24 hours after inhalation exposures. Intraluminal infusion of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 was used to evaluate endothelium-dependent ar...

Lactic acid or its acidity apparently play an important role in the regulation of the biosynthesis of flavor compounds inLactobacillus casei subsp.rhamnosus ATCC 7469. In pyruvate-containing media,L. casei produces lactic acid, acetoin, and diacetyl. A specific pH-dependent system is necessary for both the use of pyruvate and the induction of acetoin and diacetyl production. In cell extracts ofL. casei, lactic acid inhibits the enzymatic activity of acetolactate decarboxylase (ALD) and acetolactate synthetase (ALS); this effect does not occur in whole cells under standard physiological conditions. Lactic acid prevents the use of pyruvate, and the induction of acetoin and diacetyl production. When pyruvate-containing media are used, the pH must be kept close to 6.0 in order to obtain the best production of acetoin and diacetyl.

In recent years, several Grand Challenges (GCs) of computing have been identified and expounded upon by various professional organizations in the US and England. These GCs are typically very difficult problems that will take many hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of man-years to solve. Researchers involved in identifying these problems are not going to solve them. That task will fall to our students, and our students' students. Unfortunately for GC6, the Grand Challenge focusing on Dependable Systems Evolution, interest in formal ...

To present an institutional experience with stent placement in the arterial duct combined with bilateral banding of the pulmonary artery branches as a basis for various surgical strategies in newborns with hypoplastic left heart obstructive lesions. Observational study. Paediatric heart centre in a university hospital. 20 newborns with various forms of left heart obstructive lesions and duct dependent systemic blood flow. Patients underwent percutaneous ductal stenting and surgical bilateral pulmonary artery banding. Atrial septotomy by balloon dilatation was performed as required, in one premature baby by the transhepatic approach. Survival; numbers of and reasons for palliative and corrective cardiac surgery. One patient died immediately after percutaneous ductal stenting. One patient died in connection with the surgical approach of bilateral pulmonary banding. Stent and ductal patency were achieved for up to 331 days. Two patients underwent heart transplantation and two patients ...

Presents and discusses observed failure modes of a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) database management system (DBMS) under the presence of transient operational faults induced by SWIFI (software-implemented fault injection). The Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) standard TPC-C benchmark and its associated environment is used, together with fault-injection technology, building a framework that discloses both dependability and performance figures. Over 1600 faults were injected in the database server of a client/server computing environment built on the Oracle 8.1.5 database engine and Windows NT running on COTS machines with Intel Pentium processors. A macroscopic view on the impact of faults revealed that: (1) a large majority of the faults caused no observable abnormal impact in the database server (in 96% of hardware faults and 80% of software faults, the database server behaved normally); (2) software faults are more prone to letting the database server hang or to causing abnormal terminations; (3) up to 51% of software faults lead to observable failures in the client processes

3rd International Conference on Cloud Computing and IOT (CCCIOT 2022) will provide an
excellent international forum for sharing knowledge and results in theory, methodology and
applications of Cloud computing and IoT. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform to
the researchers and practitioners from both academia as well as industry to meet and share
cutting-edge development in the field.
Authors are solicited to contribute to the conference by submitting articles that illustrate research
results, projects, surveying works and industrial experiences that describe significant advances in
the following areas, but are not limited to.

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is one of the most popular approach to describe engineering structures today. In order to apply this method efficiently, it is necessary to know the exact values of all parameters. In the case of uncertain shapes, the FEM method leads to a parameter dependent system of algebraic equations with the interval set parameters. In this

In order to build complex, large-scale, dependable systems it is necessary to use a development environment with an integrated set of capabilities that supports editing and formalization of large sets of requirements. In this paper, we introduce a new environment, called "Integrare", which supports designers and developers in building dependable, component-based systems using a new behavior- oriented design method.
