In this paper, a methodology for the development of fault-tolerant adders based on the radix 2 signed digit (SD) representation is presented. The use of a number representation characterized by a carry propagation confined to neighbor digits implies interesting advantages in terms of error detection, fault localization, and repair. Errors caused by faults belonging to a considered stuck-at fault set can be detected by a parity-based technique. In fact, a carry-free adder preserving the parity of the augends can be implemented allowing fault detection by using a parity checker. Regarding fault localization, the "carry-free" property of the adder ensures the confinement of the error due to a permanent fault to only few digits. The detection of the faulty digit has been obtained by using a recomputation with shifted operands method. Finally, after the fault localization, graceful degradation of the system intended as the reduction of the performances versus a correct output computation can be obtained by using two different procedures. The first one allows obtaining the correct output by recomputing the result performing two different shift operations and using the intersection of the obtained results to recover the correct output, while the second one is based on a reduced dynamic range approach, which allows us to obtain the result in only one step, but with fewer output digits.

Inspired by the recent trends in education towards learner autonomy with their emphasis on the interests and desires of the students, and borrowing ideas from philosophy (particularly ethics), the present study is an attempt to investigate the discrepancy in the findings of the studies addressing error correction in L2 writing instruction, and suggest the (oft-neglected) students’ beliefs, interests and wants as what can point the way out of confusion. To this end, a questionnaire was developed and 56 advanced adult EFL learners were asked to complete the questionnaire. The opinions of 20 EFL teachers were also collected using another questionnaire. Twenty-three of the students and 13 of the teachers were then interviewed in an attempt to collect explanations for their answers in the questionnaires. The results indicated that all the learners wanted the errors in their writings to be corrected. About 90 percent of them believed that all the errors in their writings should be correct...

The process oriented approach to English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instruction has spurred such new ideas as student instruction and the whole language approach. New thinking justifies the validity of qualitative research, which lets researchers view subjects' learning processes from previously impossible angles. This paper examines ESL writing expertise and English language proficiency. It explains that how students plan, organize, revise, and edit their writing is as important as their English language proficiency. Conventional methods of grading and correcting students' compositions are inadequate, because they rely too heavily on language proficiency. When writing, language interacts with writing expertise. Correcting grammatical and word errors seem to be a constant focus for Taiwanese ESL students and teachers, though many instructors try to teach how to organize ideas or write a topic sentence. What students put down on paper is a combination of both writing expertis...

The study focuses on the empirical modelling of the major determinants of imports demand of Bangladesh using annual data. We, not only, critically examine the determinants of imports demand following conventional wisdom but have taken into account some plausible new determinants like foreign exchange reserves and final expenditure components also. The paper investigates the impact of trade liberalizations as well. We finally employ the equilibrium correction mechanism (ECM) to investigate the short-run dynamics of imports demand. The estimated results demonstrate that the real GDP and relative prices of imports are statistically significant and show expected signs for Bangladesh. Relative imports prices is an important determinant of imports demand both in the short- and long-run. We find that the hypothesis of unit coefficient of income in the aggregate imports demand is apposite in Bangladeshi data. Trade liberalization could not make any special difference for the imports demand ...

The authors put forward a sales response model to explain the differences in immediate and dynamic effects of promotional prices and regular prices on sales. The model consists of a vector autoregression rewritten in error-correction format which allows to disentangle the immediate effects from the dynamic effects. In a second level of the model, the immediate price elasticities, the cumulative

In this paper the impact of the introduction of the Euro on the vertical price transmission in German food markets is analyzed. It is hypothesized that the presence of money illusion might have lead to higher real prices as a result of the Euro, and if so it must be accompanied with a higher margin between the respective wholesale and retail price. While generally studies focus on the behavior of average prices, in this study the reactions of individual retailers are investigated. For lettuce and chicken the vertical price relationships between retail and wholesale prices are estimated by an error correction approach, which is extended to test for structural breaks with a flexible time frame. The results indicate no impact of the Euro for most of the retail stores. However, about every fifth grocery store did react to the new currency by generally increasing its mark up significantly. This leads to the conclusion that money illusion might have a significant impact on the real adjust...

In order to improve OCR quality in texts originally typeset in Gothic script, we have built an automated correction system which is highly specialized for the given text. Our approach includes external dictionary resources as well as information derived from the text itself. The focus lies on testing and improving different methods for classifying words as correct or erroneous. Also, different techniques are applied to find and rate correction candidates. In addition, we are working on a web application that enables users to read and edit the digitized text online.

This paper reports high-precision motion control at the target position and the offline compensation of the straightness error occurring during the motion of the magnetically levitated stage supported by the linear magnetic bearing. The linear magnetic bearing is composed of electromagnets and sensors in the same module to enable easy maintenance and to reduce the machining error, and the conventional
