In classical econometric binary regression models, the logistic regression model has been used associated to the logit symmetric link. The purpose of this paper is to present binary regression models with rather asymmetric links —not yet available as commercial software—, when this asymmetry is more appropriate to the researcher. In addition, a utility program called BAYES-PUCP is implemented. BAYES-PUCP uses a bayesian approach with the program WinBUGS and will facilitate the writing of the syntax for the models reviewed. It also generates both the syntax and the structure of the data. The method is illustrated for a sample of farmers who consider the decision to eradicate illegal crops of coca leaf. Factors associated with this decision are also explored.

This article makes reference to the effectiveness of the national social protection system, which depends on the efficiency of systems for redistributing income within a state, i.e. the efficiency of tax and social systems. The accession to the European Union (EU) was equivalent to the start of a new transition phase for the of development and social protection of Romania system. The current system of social protection can be characterized as a centralized one, even if the intentions of decentralization of responsibilities are pronounced while the financial capacities of local public authorities are strengthened. Romania has learned that EU policies are not always tailored to its size and that it has the possibility to negotiate them so that specific features and needs are better considered and covered.

Michael Chwe is known as a game theorist among economists. In this book he explores a new field at the border of his previous work and related to the study of co-operative games. For him, the issue of co-ordination among humans is central, and one aspect of it is to understand how humans can share knowledge. The book addresses the issue of common knowledge formation, first demonstrating its centrality to an explanation of co-ordination processes among humans, and then discussing a number of examples taken from both large societies and small groups. The book could thus be a step on the way to bridging the gap between very theoretical approaches to interaction and empirical sociological observation. Chwe's references are either in sociology and computer science or in social psychology. They sometimes seem close to citations that can be found in JASSS papers: Schelling, Sperber and Wilson.

This study is focused on the changes in import into a market of the Republic of Moldova as well as produced by this the social and an economy effect when there is reformed a trade policy. In this context, under the trade policy reforming we understand the liberalization of trade of the Republic of Moldova with EU induced by adoption of Free Trade Agreement as well as with Turkey because it is a condition of the EU. Proposed effect is generated by elimination of custom duties in the mutual trade and will be expressed in cheaper price of import from EU and Turkey. For government, it is important to estimate and foreseen the impact of this trade policy option. In this study impact of trade reform, that includes assessment of import increasing, tariff revenue change, welfare eff ects for the population, was defined at the SMART model – Software for Market Analysis and Restriction on Trade. Results of this study can be used to anticipate the economic effects of trade policy adopted, such...

This paper analyses the impact of terrorism on Israeli companies related to the defence, security or antiterrorism
industries, relative to its impact on other companies. We match every Israeli company to the American company with the closest expected return among all the companies that belong to the same industry and trade in the same market, in order to isolate the effect of terrorism from other common industry shocks. The findings show that whereas terrorism had a significant negative impact of 5% on non-defence-related companies, it had a significantly positive overall effect of 7% on defence-related companies.

This paper examines whether a measure of insider trading in betting markets derived from the Shin (1993) model is significantly related in samples of horse and greyhound races to an alternative, independently derived indicator of insider activity suggested by , namely plunges in the odds offered against a particular competitor on the day of a race. The analysis suggests that there is a significant relationship.

This is a book about a book : JiM. Keynes 's The General Theory of Employment , Interest and Money. It is the outcome of several years ' experience using the General Theory as the core of my macroeconomics courses for undergraduates at UCL. I believe it sheds new light on Keynes ' s book , and in that respect my intended audience is my fellow-academics , but it is also meant for students : I feel strongly that the current practice of separating one 's audience , reserving new thinking for the professionals and giving students only what is generally accepted , is both patronising to students and inimical to the vitality and progress of our subject. Therefore I hope to encourage others , by means of this book , to bring the General Theory back into mainstream teaching-not because there is anything sacrosanct about Keynes , but because I would argue (do argue , in this book) that the General Theory gives a far richer understanding of the structure of macroeconomic interactions and methods of analysing them than much of what has been written since .

Most researchers dealing with problems of new EU member countries have expressed the view that the candidate countries receive the benefits of integration into the EU in the long term. Transfers from EU pre-accession funds cover a small part of annual GDP. Therefore, most of the costs of these new member countries should finance itself. Transfers from European funds will likely be a catalyst for attracting additional external resources through co-financing.

The effects of minimum wage legislation are analysed with the assumptions that firms are able to alter the working conditions of their employees, and that workers have different preferences about the characteristics of their job. The main findings tally with Card and Krueger's (1995) recent somewhat puzzling empirical evidence about the effects of changes in minimum wage. I find that the effects of changes in the minimum wage on employment are limited, that there is a positive spillover on high-wage workers, and that there is bunching of workers at the minimum wage.

This article refers to the principles formulated by the Basel Committee on the organization and role of the compliance function within ban-king financial institutions. Also, the provisions of the national financial legislation and the manner in which the proposals of the Basel Committee were reflected in the local regulatory framework are analysed. The compliance with the Basel III standards is the main challenge for the national banking system, and the main normative acts for implementing the standards show that the National Bank of Moldova has adopted all the principles imposed by the Basel Committee, regarding the compliance function. Some provisions of the legislative acts issued by the NBM are even a word-by-word account of the Basel principles.

We propose to measure inequality of well-being with a multidimensional generalization of the Gini coefficient. We derive two inequality indices from their underlying social evaluation functions. These functions are conceived as a double aggregation functions: one across the dimensions of well-being, and another across the individuals. They differ only with respect to the sequencing of aggregations. We argue that the sequencing that does not exclude the Gini index to be sensitive to the correlation between the dimensions is more attractive. We illustrate both Gini indices using Russian household data on three dimensions of well-being: expenditure, health and education.

This paper examines ways of reducing transport-related emissions in the large cities of Australia and Asia. Although vehicle ownership in Asian cities is very low by Australian standards, high population densities and low levels of road space per vehicle lead to high levels of traffic congestion and air pollution. Attempting to provide more urban road space per vehicle will not help, as there exists a strong latent demand for car travel.

The positioning strategy is no longer a trendy concept today, but has become a fundamental component of strategic marketing. The positioning process is of vital importance in creating and developing a strategy with a significant impact on the competitiveness of companies. At the same time, positioning should be seen as a long-term effort, with rigorous approach and investments, and not as a simple marketing tool. Whether it is a small, local company or a large company with a rich market experience, the marketing positioning process is of vital importance in developing a strategy with a clear impact on the competitiveness of companies and on the industry as a whole.

The paper aims to investigate the main characteristics of institutions, as well as some of their more conspicuous peculiarities, as, for instance, their resistance to change, chiefly when compared to the capacity and speed of transformation of what is called the other social factors (or components). The article tries to describe the relationships among institutions and other social factors, in addition to contrasts and similarities among institutions in different levels, and in distinct countries and regions. It also intends to show the factors that conduct to a growing or decreasing institutional homogeneity in these different loci, and to an augmentation or lessening of the institutional instrumentality. Besides, the paper tries to give a better definition of institutions, which is important nowadays, given the increasing interest of economics for institutions.
