The historical evolution of van chai from within the administrative structure of farming villages is explained, and their geographical distribution described. The social and management functions and administration of the ‘floating village’ type of van chai is explained with particular reference to the lagoons of Thua Thien Hue Province. The van chai is the focus for the spiritual activities of fishing, so in each fishing community founded by migrants along the South-Central coast a van chai was established to worship the Whale God. These reflected the traditional folk and professional beliefs and mutual assistance within the community. Analysis of the religious and social functions and organization of the ‘guild-type’ van chai of the South-Central coast is based on Van Thuy Tu, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province. The general design principles of pre-existing management systems in Vietnam are examined in terms of rights, rules, monitoring and accountability, conflict resolution, and sanctions.

Sampling was undertaken, with the same fishing gear and along the Sava River, from its source to its confluence, in September 2014 and September 2015. In total, 44 fish species were identified, of which 37 were native species and 7 were alien. Fish samples revealed independence in terms of both species composition and their abundance under different hydrological conditions. During flooding and high water levels in 2014, pelagic fish species were sampled in greater proportion than at lower water levels in 2015 when benthic fish species were more abundant. The flood wave in 2014 was accompanied by catch of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, a typical lower rhithron fish species in the upper course, and of tench, Tinca tinca, a typical potamon fish species of backwaters, in the main channel of the lower Sava River. One specimen of bighead goby, Ponticola kessleri, which is common in the potamon fish community, was caught during the 2015 sampling close to the boundary between the upper and middle sections of the Sava. This is the first record of Ponto-Caspian gobies in the inland waters of Slovenia. Its finding far upstream indicates a strong effect of an as yet unidentified stress along the Sava River up to the spot where the bighead goby was sampled. Finally, these results indicate that pelagic fish species are more resistant to the stressful effect of flooding than benthic species, and that the structure of fish communities is influenced/affected by flooding as a short-term stressor. The progressively increasing number of alien fish species downstream in the Sava River point to the effects of long-term human-induced stressors in the area.

Shore fish community structure off the Jordanian Red Sea coast was determined on fringing coral reefs and in a seagrass-dominated bay at 6 m and 12 m depths. A total of 198 fish species belonging to 121 genera and 43 families was recorded. Labridae and Pomacentridae dominated the ichthyofauna in terms of species richness and Pomacentridae were most abundant. Neither diversity nor species richness was correlated to depth. The abundance of fishes was higher at the deep reef slope, due to schooling planktivorous fishes. At 12 m depth abundance of fishes at the seagrass-dominated site was higher than on the coral reefs. Multivariate analysis demonstrated a strong influence on the fish assemblages by depth and benthic habitat. Fish species richness was positively correlated with hard substrate cover and habitat diversity. Abundance of corallivores was positively linked with live hard coral cover. The assemblages of fishes were different on the shallow reef slope, deep reef slope and seagrass meadows. An analysis of the fish fauna showed that the Gulf of Aqaba harbours a higher species richness than previously reported. The comparison with fish communities on other reefs around the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean supported the recognition of an Arabian subprovince within the Indian Ocean. The affinity of the Arabian Gulf ichthyofauna to the Red Sea is not clear.

Landscape-scale patterns of freshwater fish diversity and assemblage structure remain poorly documented in many areas of Central America, while aquatic ecosystems throughout the region have been impacted by habitat degradation and hydrologic alterations. Diadromous fishes may be especially vulnerable to these changes, but there is currently very little information available regarding their distribution and abundance in Central American river systems. We sampled small streams at 20 sites in the Sixaola River basin in southeastern Costa Rica to examine altitudinal variation in the diversity and species composition of stream fish assemblages, with a particular focus on diadromous species. A set of environmental variables was also measured in the study sites to evaluate how changes in fish assemblage structure were related to gradients in stream habitat. Overall, fish diversity and abundance declined steeply with increasing elevation, with very limited species turnover. The contribution of diadromous fishes to local species richness and abundance increased significantly with elevation, and diadromous species dominated assemblages at the highest elevation sites. Ordination of the sampling sites based on fish species composition generally arranged sites by elevation, but also showed some clustering based on geographic proximity. The dominant gradient in fish community structure was strongly correlated with an altitudinal habitat gradient identified through ordination of the environmental variables. The variation we observed in stream fish assemblages over relatively small spatial scales has significant conservation implications and highlights the ecological importance of longitudinal connectivity in Central American river systems.

The fishing community of Bering Island, located in the Russian Commander Islands off the Kamchatka Peninsula, was originally founded by a small number of Russian soldiers and merchants, along with Aleuts forcibly relocated from the western region of the Aleutian archipelago. The purpose of this study is to characterize the genetic variation of Bering Island inhabitants for autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y-chromosome DNA and classic genetic markers and to investigate the genetic impact of the 19th-century founding and subsequent demographic events on this heterogeneous community. Our results show a loss of diversity among maternal lineages in the Bering Aleut population, with fixation of mtDNA haplogroup D, as revealed by median-joining network analysis and mismatch differences. Conversely, paternal haplotypes exhibit an increase in diversity and the presence of a substantial number of non-Native lineages.
