Policy makers and other stakeholders concerned with regional rural development increasingly face the need for instruments that can improve transparency in the policy debate and that enhance understanding of opportunities for and limitations to development. To this end, a methodology called SOLUS (Sustainable Options for Land Use) was developed by an interdisciplinary team of scientists over a 10-year period in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica. The main tools of SOLUS include a linear programming (LP) model, two expert systems that define technical coefficients for a large number of production activities, and a geographic information system (GIS). A five-step procedure was developed for GIS to spatially reference biophysical and economic parameters, to create input for the expert systems and the LP model, to store and spatially reference model output data, and to create maps of both model input and output data. SOLUS can be used to evaluate the potential effects of alternative policies and incentive structures on the performance of the agricultural sector. A number of practical applications demonstrate SOLUS's capability to quantify trade-offs between economic objectives (income, employment) and environmental sustainability (soil nutrient balances, pesticide use, greenhouse gas emissions). GIS-created maps visualize the spatial aspects of such trade-offs and indicate hotspots where local goals may conflict with regional goals.

The Dirichlet family owes its privileged status within simplex distributions to easyness of interpretation and good mathematical properties. In particular, we recall fundamental properties for the analysis of compositional data such as closure under amalgamation and subcomposition. From a probabilistic point of view, it is characterised (uniquely) by a variety of independence relationships which makes it indisputably the reference model for expressing the non trivial idea of substantial independence for compositions. Indeed, its well known inadequacy as a general model for compositional data stems from such an independence structure together with the poorness of its parametrisation. The current challenges in manufacturing engineering are the integration of the product/process/factory worlds (data and tools) and the synchronization of their lifecycles. Major ICT players already offer all-comprehensive Product Lifecycle Management suites supporting most of the processes. However, they do not offer all the required functionalities and they lack of interoperability. An answer will be given by the development of a Virtual Factory Framework (VFF): an integrated virtual environment that supports factory processes along all the phases of its lifecycle. This paper will focus on the Virtual Factory Manager (VFM) that acts as a server supporting the I/O communications within the framework for the software tools needing to access its data repository. The VFM will ensure data consistency and avoid data loss or corruption while different modules access/modify partial areas of the data repository at different times. Finally, an industrial case study will show the potentiality of the VFM.

The CMMI-ACQ and the ISO/IEC 12207:2008 are process reference models that address issues related to the best practices for software product acquisition. With the aim of offering information on how the practices described in these two models are related, and considering that the mapping is one specific strategy for the harmonization of models, we have carried out a mapping of these two reference models for acquisition. We have taken into account the latest versions of the models. Furthermore, to carry out this mapping in a systematic way, we defined a process for this purpose. We consider that the mapping presented in this paper supports the understanding and leveraging of the properties of these reference models, which is the first step towards harmonization of improvement technologies. Furthermore, since a great number of organizations are currently acquiring products and services from suppliers and developing fewer and fewer of these products in-house, this work intends to support organizations which are interested in introducing or improving their practices for acquisition of products and services using these models.

A preliminary description of this model was originally published in 2004. In this paper, we present the reference model in detail, improving the description and discussing the factors that enable multinationals corporations to operate successfully across geographic and cultural boundaries. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) provide aid in clinical decision making and therefore need to take into consideration human, data interactions, and cognitive functions of clinical decision makers. The objective of this paper is to introduce a high level reference model that is intended to be used as a foundation to design successful and contextually relevant CDSS systems. The paper begins by introducing the information flow, use, and sharing characteristics in a hospital setting, and then it outlines the referential context for the model, which are clinical decisions in a hospital setting. Important characteristics of the Clinical decision making process include: (i) Temporally ordered steps, each leading to new data, which in turn becomes useful for a new decision, (ii) Feedback loops where acquisition of new data improves certainty and generates new questions to examine, (iii) Combining different kinds of clinical data for decision making, (iv) Reusing the same data in two or more different decisions, and (v) Clinical decisions requiring human cognitive skills and knowledge, to process the available information. These characteristics form the foundation to delineate important considerations of Clinical Decision Support Systems design. The model includes six interacting and interconnected elements, which formulate the high-level reference model (CDSS-RM). These elements are introduced in the form of questions, as considerations, and are examined with the use of illustrated scenario-based and data-driven examples. The six elements /considerations of the reference model are: (i) Do CDSS mimic the cognitive process of clinical decision makers? (ii) Do CDSS provide recommendations with longitudinal insight? (iii) Is the model performance contextually realistic? (iv) Is the 'Historical Decision' bias taken into consideration in CDSS design? (v) Do CDSS integrate established clinical standards and protocols? (vi) Do CDSS utilize unstructured data? The CDSS-RM reference model can contribute to optimized design of modeling methodologies, in order to improve response of health systems to clinical decision-making challenges.

In this paper, an optimal PID-FLC (Proportional Integral Derivative Fuzzy Logic Controller) is proposed. The design of this system aims to control blood glucose elevation in type 1 diabetic patients. An automated system integrated with a miniaturized insulin infusion pump and a continuous biosensor that measures the glucose level has been developed recently to replace beta cells in the pancreas. The main contribution of the paper is that it introduces an automated insulin delivery system based on a parallel PID-FLC structure tuned with genetic algorithms. This control system was compared to an optimal PIFLC and PD-FLC as well as a reference model. The results revealed that the controllers could maintain the glucose level within a normal range. In addition, the performance of the PIFLC and the PID-FLC was very close to that of beta cells in normal individuals. So, they can be exploited prosperously as control systems to manage blood glucose concentrations in Type 1 diabetic patients. In addition, the PID-FLC saved the amount of the daily delivered insulin, while, its performance was approximately the same as that of the PI-FLC.

However, they are not yet widely used nor undertaken in the field of animal experimentation, even though there is a lot to be gained from the process. Therefore, a gold standard publication checklist (GSPC) for animal studies is presented in this paper. The items on the checklist have been selected on the basis of a literature analysis and the resulting scientific evidence that these factors are decisive in determining the outcome of animal studies. The magnetoencephalograms (MEGs) are mainly due to the source currents. However, there is a significant contribution to MEGs from the volume currents. The structure of the anatomical surfaces, e.g., gray and white matter, could severely influence the flow of volume currents in a head model. This, in turn, will also influence the MEGs and the inverse source localizations. This was examined in detail with three different human head models. Three finite element head models constructed from segmented MR images of an adult male subject were used for this study. Cloud Computing is a paradigm shift that involves dynamic provisioning of shared computing resources on demand. It is a pay-as-you-go model that offers computing resources as a service in an attempt to reduce IT capital and operating expenditures. The problem is that current software architectures lack elements such as those related to address elasticity, virtualization and billing. These elements are needed in the design of cloud applications. Moreover, there is no generic cloud software architecture for designing and building cloud applications. To further complicate the problem, each platform provider has different standards that influence
the way applications are written. This ties cloud users to a particular provider. This paper will focus on defining a reference model for cloud computing; more particularly, it presents a meta-model that shows the main cloud vocabulary and design elements, the set of configuration rules, and the semantic interpretation. It is always important to understand the abstract architecture of a system, and then tackle platform-specific issues. This separation of concerns allows for better maintainability, and facilitate applications portability.

This paper details the use of the IT Infrastructure Library Framework (ITIL) for optimising process workflows in the IT Service Centre of Harz University in Wernigerode, Germany, exemplified by the Release Management Process. It is described, how, during the course of a special ITIL project, the As-Is-Status of the various original processes was documented as part of the process life cycle and then transformed in the To-Be-Status, according to the ITIL Best Practice Framework. It is also shown, how the ITIL framework fits into the four-layered-process model, that could be derived from interviews with the universities IT support staff, and how the various modified processes interconnect with each other to form a value chain. The paper highlights the final results of the project and gives an outlook on the future use of ITIL as a business modelling tool in the IT Service Centre of Harz University.
