Simple, robust, and low-cost nitrate- and ammonium-selective electrodes were made using substrate prepared from household materials. We explored phosphonium-based ILs and poly (methyl methacrylate)/poly(decyl methacrylate)(MMA-DMA) copolymer as matrix materials alternative to classical PVC-based membranes. IL-based membranes showed suitability only for nitrate-selective electrode exhibiting linear concentration range between 5.0 × 10 and 2.5 × 10 M with a detection limit of 5.5 × 10 M. On the other hand, MMA-DMA-based membranes showed suitability for both ammonium- and nitrate-selective electrodes, and were successfully applied to detect NO₃ and NH₄⁺ in water and soil samples. The proposed ISEs exhibited near-Nernstian potentiometric responses to NO₃ and NH₄⁺ with the linear range concentration between 5.0 × 10 and 5.0 × 10 M (LOD = 11.3 µM) and 5.0 × 10 and 1.0 × 10 M (LOD = 1.2 µM), respectively. The power of ISEs to detect NO₃ and NH₄⁺ in water and soils was tested by comparison ...

Abstract: We survey agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithms and discuss efficient implementations that are available in R and other software environments. We look at hierarchical self-organizing maps, and mixture models. We review grid-based clustering, focusing on hierarchical density-based approaches. Finally we describe a recently developed very efficient (linear time) hierarchical clustering algorithm, which can also be viewed as a hierarchical grid-based algorithm.

In this study, a framework using Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) for prediction of reliability of Dynamic Positioning (DP) sub-systems for computation of Dynamic Positioning Reliability Index (DP-RI) has been proposed. The DP System is complex with significant levels of integration between many sub-systems such as the Reference System, DP Control System, Thruster / Propulsion System, Power System, Electrical System and the Environment System to perform diverse control functions. The proposed framework includes a mathematical computation approach to compute reliability of DP sub-systems and a data driven approach to predict the reliability at a sub-system level for evaluation of model performance and accuracy. The framework results demonstrate excellent performance under a wide range of data availability and guaranteed lower computational burden for real-time non-linear optimization. There are three main components of the proposed architecture for the mathematical formulation of the DP...

Wheat is one of the world’s most favoured food sources, reaching millions of people on a daily basis. However, its production has climatic consequences. Fuel, inorganic fertilizers and pesticides used in wheat production emit greenhouse gases that can contribute negatively to climate change. It is unknown whether adopting alternative farming practices will increase crop yield while reducing carbon emissions. Here we quantify the carbon footprint of alternative wheat production systems suited to semiarid environments. We find that integrating improved farming practices (that is, fertilizing crops based on soil tests, reducing summerfallow frequencies and rotating cereals with grain legumes) lowers wheat carbon footprint effectively, averaging −256 kg CO2 eq ha−1 per year. For each kg of wheat grain produced, a net 0.027–0.377 kg CO2 eq is sequestered into the soil. With the suite of improved farming practices, wheat takes up more CO2 from the atmosphere than is actually emitted durin...

Binary expression systems like the LexA-LexAop system provide a powerful experimental tool kit to study gene and tissue function in developmental biology, neurobiology and physiology. However, the number of well-defined LexA enhancer trap insertions remains limited. In this study, we present the molecular characterization and initial tissue expression analysis of nearly 100 novel StanEx LexA enhancer traps, derived from theStonEx1index line. This includes 76 insertions into novel, distinct gene loci not previously associated with enhancer traps or targeted LexA constructs. Additionally, our studies revealed evidence for selective transposase-dependent replacement of a previously-undetectedKPelement on chromosome III within the StanEx1genetic background during hybrid dysgenesis, suggesting a molecular basis for the over-representation of LexA insertions at theNK7.1locus in our screen. Production and characterization of novel fly lines were performed by students and teachers in experi...

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the recent performance of the Spanish commercial real estate market. In particular, the crisis has led to a sharp decrease in nonresidential investment and has triggered a correction in sale prices, transaction numbers and new financing operations. It has also affected Spanish real estate investment trusts specialising in this market, both in terms of the number of vehicles created and of their stock prices and the value of their real estate assets. By contrast, to date there has been no significant deterioration in credit quality linked to the commercial real estate market.

Modifications of Amazonian forests by pre‐Columbian peoples are thought to have left ecological legacies that have persisted to the modern day. Most Amazonian palaeoecological records do not, however, provide the required temporal resolution to document the nuanced changes of pre‐Columbian disturbance or post‐disturbance succession and recovery, making it difficult to detect any direct, or indirect, ecological legacies on tree species. Here, we investigate the fossil pollen, phytolith and charcoal history of Lake Kumpaka, Ecuador, during the last 2,415 years in c. 3–50 year time intervals to assess ecological legacies resulting from pre‐Columbian forest modification, disturbance, cultivation and fire usage. Two cycles of pre‐Columbian cultivation (one including slash‐and‐burn cultivation, the other including slash‐and‐mulch cultivation) were documented in the record around 2150–1430 cal. year BP and 1250–680 cal. year BP, with following post‐disturbance succession dynamics. Modern d...
