What do huge flocks of sheep, hundreds of rabbits, business parks, metropolitan parks, leisure parks, high-tech parks have in common with airports? These are the most frequent visitors to airports recently constructed. These are the new ways of inhabiting an airport and connecting it to its context. The book presents the transformation of obsolete airfields as new productive landscapes. It explores the challenges for the conversion of abandoned, decommissioned and on-hold airports thought the exploration of their life cycles. By exploring the transitory condition, defined as “on-hold,” the book discovers strategies for the transformation of obsolete airfields.

Many scientists invented the evolution of living organisms long time ago. Different theories have been discussed. Some of them are good others not accurate. The study of evolution had led to the study of the life cycle of organisms and the survival strategies that organisms follow in the changing environments. It is crucial to study mitosis and cell division processes in the animals and draw a comparison between replication processes in different species. It shows that there are several differences and little similarities in those species. Another an important mechanism that is unique in animal species is the homeostatic mechanism. Another area of interest that we need to discuss is the architectural patterns of the levels of organization of animal. The importance of understanding these patterns in the sentience and survival of organisms. The modern theory of evolution has several implications in several areas. The critical evaluation of these implications can help to understand the impact of this theory on our life. Finally, phenotype and inheritance patterns are influenced by the environmental changes.

This paper presents a process of systematization and analysis of the reliability parameters of a proportional hydraulic platform that aims to study position control using hydraulic systems. Currently the positioning systems using hydraulic circuits include mechanical and electronic components and software. These automatic systems involve diverse and complex technologies, for which reason the reliability analysis is difficult. Moreover, the failure modes which can occur in each item can produce distinct effects, increasing the complexity of this analysis. The control of all parameters involved becomes very difficult for the design agents, with consequences for the other phases of the life cycle. In this regard a methodology to systemize the information necessary to obtain a product with reliability is proposed. In this process, hierarchic FTA and FMEA diagrams are used as tools for the systematization of the reliability parameters, and Petri Nets are is used to represent the states a...

The importance of claims and disputes in Portuguese public contracting is so large nowadays that most construction managers tend to consider a specific final stage of the project life cycle for dealing with them. The aim of this paper is to characterise claims in railway projects conducted in the last few years in Portugal. A survey was made to project promoters and data from a number of projects has been collected and classified according to usual claim causes as currently adopted in literature. The results of the survey show that project changes and delays contribute to roughly 99% of the claims surveyed.

In Life Cycle Engineering, it is vital that the engineering knowledge for the product is captured throughout its life cycle in a formal and structured manner. This will allow the information to be referred to in the future by engineers who did not work on the original design but are wanting to understand the reasons that certain design decisions were made. In the past, attempts were made to try to capture this knowledge by having the engineer record the knowledge manually during a design session. However, this is not only time-consuming but is also disruptive to the creative process. Therefore, the research presented in this paper is concerned with capturing design knowledge automatically using a traditional 2D design environment and also an immersive 3D design environment. The design knowledge is captured by continuously and non-intrusively logging the user during a design session and then storing this output in a structured eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format. Next, the XML da...

The concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) has come to be applied in healthcare over the last few years. The process management category in the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence model is designed to evaluate the quality of medical services. However, a systematic approach for implementation support is necessary to achieve excellence in the healthcare business process. The
