This bilingual book (English/Polish) is a kind of a monograph of the National Theatre in Warsaw that has existed since 1765. Its principal scope is to show something that could be described as the phenomenon of this first public theatre in Poland, the history of its buildings and particualarly the last one designed by Antonio Corazzi in 1820s. This huge building, which stands in the heart of the city, only by miracle preserved its beautiful facade during the word war II. The book discusses numerous performances, visits of great opera singers -- among them Caruso - and actors and actresses, such as Helelena Modjeska and Sarah Bernahardt.The author tries to describe not only the beauty of the building and its external and inner decoration but also Corazzi's classical inspirations. Last but not least the book approaches the artistic significance and meaning of the decoration of the tympanum and the bronze quadriga.

The article critically reviews the musicological discussion, arisen since the
mid-1990s, on the relationship between Italian opera, Verdi and the Risorgimento,
in order to highlight the main ideological assumptions of the different
positions. A new reading is proposed, starting not from the ‘external’
historical data but from the dramatic-musical language of the operas;
this is understood as a semiotic system that is a vehicle of historical meaning.
The analysis focuses on five topics recurring in the Verdian oeuvre,
and, to a lesser extent, in other authors: 1) the oath; 2) the old warrior; 3) the
role of women; 4) the intra-family and inter-generational relationships;
5) the potential conflicts between social classes. Finally, it is suggested that
these topics, understandable to anyone living in the social and cultural
context of nineteenth-century Italy, could be interpreted as an invitation to
political action by the narrow elites engaged in the Risorgimento movement.

The Master’s thesis titled “Beginnings of Musical Performing Arts in Turkey-
Before and After Dikran Çuhacıyan,” focuses on western performing arts in the Ottoman Empire during the westernization movement in the Tanzimat (reformation) and early Republic period. Operas and operettas of the most prominent composer of the period, Dikran Çuhacıyan, are analyzed. The thesis shows that musical performing arts became one of the pillars of the cultural policies of the republican period and was one of the major cornerstones of musical revolution.

The philojudaic current in 19th-century Italian thought, with its sympathetic view towards the granting of civil and political rights to Jewish citizens on the Italian peninsula, found expression in Italian opera, but with many of the same limitations evident in supposedly philojudaic writers such as Massimo d'Azeglio and Vincenzo Gioberti. This essay considers several noteworthy examples of the phenomenon, drawn from operas by Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Achille Peri, Giovanni Pacini, Francesco Schira, and Venetian composer Samuele Levi.
