Power system components are susceptible to failures which causes undesirable interruptions to consumer's power supply thus affecting the overall power system availability. Reliability evaluation is therefore important in power system studies to ensure continuity of power supply in line with the country's increasing population and the need to foster industrialization. This study is centered on reliability assessment of Mofor Injection Substation. This assessment evaluates the performance of the Mofor Injection substation considering various system parameters which contribute to the seamless operation of the station. Historical data obtained from the power substations from January, 2017 to December, 2017 were used to analyze the Injection Substation power reliability. The results obtained revealed a power availability index (ASAI) of 0.7683796 and 0.768968 for Ekete and Orhuwhorun substations respectively. Also, other reliability indices evaluated were SAIDI, CAIDI and SAIFI. The aforementioned reliability results reveals that power distribution at Mofor injection substation can be said to be unreliable, inefficient, undesirable and unstable.

Nigeria is suffering from the worst energy crisis in its history, resulting in its rural communities being subjected to massive power outages, daily. Energy promotes economic well-being and makes social life worthwhile such that youths are less disposed to violent crimes. This study investigated the consequences of power outages on the social-economic life of rural households in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Primary data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire circulated among unemployed youth, students, housewives, businessmen and professionals in the area. The study focused on the relationship between power outage and its impact on the everyday life of the people. This study adopted a descriptive research design using 1000 randomly selected members of 44 rural households in the areas mostly affected by incessant power outages. It was found that stunted economic growth, reduced leisure time as well as heightened criminality and insecurity are some of the major r...

This paper aimed to model lightning strike events and evaluate its correlation with power outages in a Nigerian power distribution system. A specified coastal distribution network of southwest Nigeria was selected as a case study. Zone-specific records of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes for 84 months were obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet); records of power outage frequencies and durations for 36 months were obtained at the substations of the selected distribution network. Using numerical statistical analysis techniques, lightning activity in the system area were characterized in relative frequency terms, and correlation statistics were evaluated and analyzed for power outages and lightning events on the 11kV, 33kV, and 132kV voltage levels. An analysis of the results shows that the modelled lightning strike events patterns are closely related but the expected frequencies vary from one zone to another; and there is correlation between lightning strike and power outages in the distribution networks, which is strong and positive at the 33 kV and 132 kV circuits. In essence, the results provided salient information, useful for power systems lightning protection review, management and planning in the area. — The country of Iraq has been struggling for the past couple of decades with electricity problems like inability to supply the demand which leads to continuous power outages. This problem could be dangerous on many levels and especially in critical applications where uninterruptable power supply is necessary like hospitals and military bases. The only solution presented is the use of electrical generators. Even though electrical generators are a reliable sources of energy, they seem to have many disadvantages like their reliability on fossil fuel (diesel in particular) and the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions which causes many health issues especially in populated areas where there are to designated areas to place these electrical generators. This health and safety hazard that costs a lot of money and gives little amount of electricity is not a cost-effective solution on the long term; where more maintenance and replacement is required. This paper presents a cost-effective solution by using a hybrid photovoltaic-diesel generator system, which can be used by the civilians and the government to lower the electricity demand and reduce GHG emissions. A hybrid system is proposed for Al-Sadder city to meet the electrical demands with initial costs, net present costs and energy costs are 39 M$, 1.11 M$ and 0.526 $/kWh, respectively. These costs show great promise in this research area and perhaps more developed microsystems in the future could be the real solution to Iraq's electricity problems.

In developing countries, electricity distribution to final consumers stands chances of failure due to epileptic power supply. Most times, failure can come from the electric power provider or problems with poor electrification of a building. Failure is detrimental to ICT Network Operation Centers as they require a 24/7 supply of electricity to effectively carry out their operations and provide the required network service to their clients. In times of power failure or restoration, it is necessary for ICT personnel to be notified of such a failure or restoration as a smart response to either bring a quick power restoration to the unit with the use of an alternative power source or in order to put off the alternate power source. For the effective operation of a Network Operation Center (NOC) in times of power outages or restorations, a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) based Short Message Service (SMS) notification system (ezzzyNotifier) which incorporates a shift timetable arrangement was developed. The system was tested and was found to work satisfactorily with an average user satisfaction of 87%. This paper, therefore, presents the design and implementation of a GSM-based SMS notification system for ICT Network Operation Centers.

Weather-related impacts are at the top of all outage causes. Yet, traditional outage management (OM) approaches do not integrate all available and relevant weather-associated data automatically. This paper presents a predictive method that correlates different weather-associated data layers to provide predictive OM process implemented using the geographic information systems (GIS) framework. Examples for both transmission and distribution OM are demonstrated using vegetation, wind, and power system data in ArcGIS.

The Persistent power outage in the country due to faults has become alarming to the government and the body responsible for electricity generation in the country. It also creates a major problem for electricity consumers in Nigeria, there must be an improvement in the reliability of the transmission system in Nigeria. This research work is predominantly concerned with the analysis of outages on 330kV and 132kV transmission system, and system disturbances on generation and transmission system for five (5) years. The result shows that the forced outages are the most occurred outages on the 330 kV line, while on 132 kV line, emergency outages have the highest number of outages in 2014 but decreases rapidly over the years, similarly, twenty-seven (27) major system disturbances occurred in 2016 with 31% against ten (10) with 11% disturbances in 2015, while 2014 and 2018 with the same number of system disturbances of thirteen (13) with 15%, it is apparent that more disturbances occur on the transmission system, and there should be a proper protection scheme to maintain stable grid network. Consequently, Mini-grid and off-grid solutions will prominently address the issue of power supply shortage and instability in Nigeria.

An important feature of the new Smart Grid is self-healing capability against major power outages, transient instability, and power quality disturbance events. Of those probably the most damage done is by a power outage caused by a natural disaster. Just recently hurricanes like Dorian, Elsa, Ida, etc. caused large-scale blackouts. This is not to mention the most frequent bad weather, unexpected tornados, and hurricanes categorized under the rank of two. In those cases, the smart Grid should have a prediction and estimation capability for rapid maintenances. Most works in this area concentrate on learning a machine from historical logs, learning environmental measured data from satellites, or surprisingly enough but sometimes analyzing measured electromagnetic signals that are above the normal background activity of the earth. In the frequent case of power quality disturbance and transient instability, many works in the literature enable self-healing capability. But devices need to be software-defined equipped with cognitive capability that can be remotely reconfigured.
