Fast, realistic physically based deformable models are required for real time Virtual Reality applications such as surgical simulators. The main focus of this paper is to introduce a new deformable model called NDM that is fast enough to allow interactive frame rates and plausible deformation. The NDM is integrated in an interactive Cataract Eye Surgery Simulator (CESS), which is used to model the deformation of eye tissues when it is manipulated with surgical instrument. The deformation is modelled as the transmission of the force from the manipulated vertex to its adjacent neighbors and from those neighbors to their neighbors and so on, also the deformation can be simulated locally or globally. The NDM is tested on virtual objects those modeled as a surface mesh. The model is implemented in C programming language and uses GLUT and GLUI for the graphical user interface, OpenGL for visualization, and runs on a single personal computer. The simulation results obtained from the proposed NDM shows that the later outperform the traditional mass spring model in term of computational time. Keywords—Deformation, Soft tissue modelling, surgery simulation.

Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is a new method for rapid prototyping, a technique that produces models of objects from computer files. The most commonly used rapid prototyping technique for medical applications is stereolithography, but FDM has several potential advantages. This paper is concerned with the accuracy of an FDM model of a sheep lumbar vertebra using data from a CT scan. The model and the original vertebra were compared by making measurements with vernier callipers and by laser scanning. Visually, the model reproduced the features of the original object; this conclusion was supported by a comparison of the laser scans. Discrepancies in measurements were comparable with those of models produced using other rapid prototyping techniques, demonstrating that FDM is a viable method for making models for clinical use.

This paper describes a methodology to integrate design and manufacturing using feature recognition technique for achieving some concurrent engineering goals. the input of the feature recognition is the boundary representation (B-Rep) of solid models. The features considered in this work are protrusion and depression type of prismatic components. the feature's faces are planar, cylindrical and hybrid. The recognized features are to be used for downstream manufacturing application

Digital cameras are convenient image acquisition devices: they are fast, versatile, mobile, do not touch the object, and are relatively cheap. In OCR applications, however, digital cameras suffer from a number of limitations, like geometrical distortions. In this paper, we deal with the preprocessing step before text recognition, specifically with images from a digital camera. Experiments, performed with the FineReader 7.0 software as the back-end recognition tool, confirm importance of image preprocessing in OCR applications.
