The purpose of the current study is to evaluate the theses written in the field of social studies education in 2011-2014 in Turkey. Within the context of the current study, totally 307 master's theses written in 2011-2014 in relation to their topic, study group and method were examined. One of the qualitative data analysis techniques, descriptive analysis was employed in the study. While examining the theses, a file was opened for each thesis with a code such as T1, T2 etc, the topic, study group and method of each thesis were recorded in its file and then these data were transferred to NVivo 9.0 program. Then, as a result of the descriptive analysis conducted, the topics of the theses were coded in such a way as to collect them under themes. At the end of the coding process, models including the frequencies of the marking of each code were constructed. The results of the evaluation show that the main focus of the theses is the effect of teaching methods and techniques that can be used in social studies courses on the attitudes, behaviors and academic achievement of students. In addition to this, there are also many theses addressing the efficiency of the social studies course in imparting target skills, values and information to students. Moreover, there are some theses aiming to develop the current social studies program. While usually the students attending social studies classes constitute the study group of the theses, there are also some theses looking at the opinions of teachers and pre-service teachers. In general, descriptive survey and pretest-posttest experimental research design were used in the theses. In the analyses, quantitative data analysis techniques were employed.

Th is article’s main theme is an analysis of accessible published degree work and contributions in education journals with a focus on what is known as “experiential education”. We
start by introducing the concept of experiential education and trying to defi ne it. We then turn to the analysis of student degree work (masters, doctoral examination work and dissertations) and look specifi cally at the methodology and particular research tools used. Together with the qualifi cation work we analyse articles published in selected Czech educational journals – Pedagogika, e-Pedagogium, Pedagogická orientace, Gymnasion – likewise with a focus on experiential pedagogy. Our aim is to analyse the methodological techniques exploited in Czech experiential education as presented in the student degree work and in the articles. Overall we analysed 1,088 student works, 107 of which met the criteria that we had
chosen and related to the fi eld of experiential pedagogy. Of these 76 were empirical in research character. Because the overwhelming majority of these works used their own questionnaires or survey questions as research tools, and also interviews and observation, this methodology has only minimal potential for future studies in the fi eld of experiential education. 7 authors used standardized tools for their research. We list these in the text. We analysed a total of 336 articles from the selected educational journals, and of these
only 6 met our chosen criteria and related to “experiential education”. None of them contained empirical research, and so there was no methodology or research instrument. Unlike
in the case of the student qualifi cation works we registered no increased interest yet in the theme in the educational journals.

Using a corpus-based approach, this paper investigates the construction of stance in finite reporting clauses with that-clause complementation. The data are drawn from two corpora of theses in contrasting disciplines: a social science-politics-and a natural science-materials science. A network for the analysis of reporting clauses is presented which sets out the major alternatives available to academic writers and enables stance to be linked systematically to grammatical and semantic patterns of use. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data leads to the identification of an important, but somewhat under-researched, function of reporting clauses in academic writing: their use to report the writer's own work. Drawing on the notions of averral and attribution, the paper shows how writers can emphasize or hide their responsibility for their own propositions and thereby construct a stance which differs according to the epistemology and ideology of the discipline concerned. These reporting clauses play a key role in the construction of major claims, with greater writer visibility seen in politics than materials. However, despite the superficial objectivity and impersonality of writing in the natural sciences, it is argued that skilled exploitation of the interplay between averral and attribution allows writers to construct a stance that is both clear and pervasive.

The flavour or fragrance of Basmati rice is associated with the presence of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline. This work shows that a gene with homology to betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BAD) has significant polymorphisms in the coding region of fragrant genotypes relative to non fragrant genotypes. Accumulation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline in fragrant rice genotypes may be explained by the presence of mutations resulting in loss of function of the fgr gene product. The fgr gene corresponds to the gene encoding BAD2 in rice while BAD1 is encoded by a gene on chromosome 4. Development of an allele specific amplification (ASA) based around the deletion in the gene encoding BAD2 allows, perfect, simple and low cost discrimination between fragrant and non-fragrant rice varieties and identifies homozygous fragrant, homozygous non-fragrant and heterozygous non-fragrant individuals in a population segregating for fragrance. The cDNAs transcribed from rice chromosomes 4 and 8, each encoding an enzyme with homology to betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase were cloned and expressed in E. coli. The enzyme responsible for fragrance, encoded from chromosome 8, had optimum activity at pH 10, showed low affinity towards betaine aldehyde (bet-ald) with Km value of approximately 63μM but a higher affinity towards γ-aminobutyraldehyde (GABald) with a Km value of approximately 9μM. The enzyme encoded from chromosome 4 had optimum activity at pH 9.5 and showed generally lower affinity towards most substrates compared to the enzyme encoded from chromosome 8, substrate specificities suggest that the enzymes have higher specificity to aminoaldehydes and as such both should be

In recent years, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in many low-income countries have introduced credit programs targeted to the poor. Many of these programs specifically target the poor on the premise that they are more likely to be credit constrained and have restricted access to the wage labour market. Though participation is by choice, little is known about the role of credit on welfare. The purpose of this study was then to assess the role of credit service on welfare of the microfinance clients. It was also to enable the microfinance institutions assess if they are achieving the intended objectives of their program. The study area was Bomet District and the sample was drawn from Mulot and Silibwet “village banks”. A sample of 125 “village bank” members was selected, out of which 91 had used the credit service and the other 34 had not. Primary data on the selected respondents were collected using a structured interview schedule and secondary data were obtained from ...

The goal of the following project is to probe into the early knowledge of the syntactic and the pragmatic components of language at the syntax-pragmatics interface, as exemplified by discourse-related elements such as object clitics. Object clitics, in addition to allowing for cross-linguistic generalizations, provide an insight into the early clause structure and the mechanisms which constrain the syntax-pragmatics interface.

In this article, a new, idealizing-hermeneutic methodological approach to developing a theory of philosophical arguments is presented and carried out. The basis for this is a theory of ideal philosophical theory types developed from the analysis of historical examples. According to this theory, the following ideal types of theory exist in philosophy: 1. descriptive-nomological, 2. idealizing-hermeneutic, 3. technical-constructive, 4. ontic-practical. These types of theories are characterized in particular by what their basic types of theses are. The main task of this article is then to determine the types of arguments that are suitable for justifying these types of theses. Surprisingly, practical arguments play a key role here.

The objective of this study is to investigate the accuracy and computational efficiency of two commonly used formulations for performing the geometrically nonlinear thermal analysis of plane framed structures. The formulations considered are the followings: the Beam-Column formulation and the updated Lagrangian version of the finite element formulation that has been adopted in the commercially well-known software SAP2000. These two formulations are used to generate extensive numerical data for three plane frame configurations, which are then compared to evaluate the performance of the two formulations.

This study aims to determine the approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques used in quasi-experimental theses and/or dissertations related to teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The documents examined in this study were retrieved from the Council of Higher Education Thesis Centre database. The keywords "Turkish for foreigners" and "Turkish as a foreign language" were used in the database search. As a result of the database search, a total of 50 quasi-experimental theses or dissertations that included information about the approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques were accessed. The basic qualitative research design was employed in the study. The examined documents were limited to those conducted between 2008 and 2020. The document analysis method was used to collect data. Using descriptive analysis, the data were classified based on the subproblems. It was determined that there were differences in the distribution of approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques in theses and/or dissertations related to teaching Turkish as a foreign language and that most studies were carried out on teaching techniques. In addition, it was found that most of the applications in the theses and/or dissertations were for the independent user level and that the researchers mostly preferred the areas of writing skills and vocabulary in their applications. Another finding of this study is that attributing equal importance to four basic language skills, the number of experimental studies on teaching Turkish as a foreign language has been increasing.

Market liberalization, globalization, and changing consumer behaviour are causing transformation in Kenyan agro-food value chains. Production, marketing and consumption are moving towards high-valued products resulting to diversification in the agricultural food production portfolio. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of value addition on product price in reducing the declining per capita expenditure as well as reduced competitiveness of peanut and its products sold in the supermarkets of Nairobi. The objectives were, to characterize peanut value addition levels, establish whether the level of value addition affects prices, and determine if there are price differentials due to supermarket location, division as well as across the types of the supermarkets in addition to establishing factors that influence price differentials in Nairobi. The eight administrative divisions of Nairobi were stratified to give a sample of 100, who were randomly selected. Descriptive ...

For many years, coffee has been a major source of income to many Ugandans. Traditionally, Uganda coffee farmers have sold their coffee in unhulled form as dried cherries (Kiboko) through governmental parastatals. Structural changes in the agricultural sector arising from policy reforms that Uganda embraced since 1990 (notably liberalisation, privatisation and decentralization) removed the monopoly of governmental parastatals in agricultural marketing and pricing which was a disincentive to improvement of quality and quantity of output. Because of liberalisation, coffee quality and exports declined as the traders were more concerned about quantity rather than quality, which led to low prices and consequently low farm incomes. In response to this, value addition through hulling prior to marketing by farmers was suggested as one of the remedies. However, the rate of adoption of this strategy remains disappointingly low. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors underlying t...

Smallholder dairy sector in Western Kenya plays an important role in the livelihoods of many farm households by generating income and employment. Napier grass is the principal source of livestock feed in the region; as well as being an integral grass in the push-pull technology (PPT). Despite this fact, Napier stunt disease (NSD) has become a serious threat to the growth of Napier grass and consequently to the livestock industry. This thesis focused on farmers‟ perceptions on alternative fodder grasses to Napier grass and sought to provide a better understanding of the alternative grasses available for adoption due to the threat to fodder availability by NSD. The objective of this study was thus to determine the extent of Napier stunt disease infestation in small-scale dairy farming and to find out alternative fodder grasses small scale dairy farmers would prefer if Napier grass is affected by NSD. The study was conducted in Bungoma District (now county), Western province, Kenya. Pr...

This work is undertaken to give a lucid assessment of Nigeria's foreign policy and national interest with particular focus on the policy thrusts adopted by both the Yar'Adua and Jonathan's administration from 2007 to 2015. The work examines the trends in Nigeria's foreign policy since independence to 2015. Although, many scholarly works have been done on Nigeria's foreign policy trends since independence, but very little of specific attempts have been made to articulate the need for re-direction of Nigeria's foreign policy. The work is a deliberate effort aimed at directing intellectual attention to the reasons why Nigeria's foreign policy vis a vis her national interest should be re-directed from Africa-centered. In order to give credence to the research and obtain adequate and reliable information for the study, primary and secondary data were utilized. Interviews were conducted, structured questionnaires were administered. Some members of staff of the ...

Writing is one of the macro-skills that can be developed through practice and enough exposures of individuals to the field of their interests. This skill can also be identified in the so-called theses as outputs presented by the authors—either students or practitioners of any field. According to Bitchener [1], “Writing an empirically based thesis requires a clear understanding of what is expected or required for each part or section” (p.1). However, there are still some unpublished theses under criticism as manifested in the negative feedback or reactions of both general and specialized audience based on the quality in general, and on the clarity of thoughts in particular. In thesis, a good facility of the English language is indeed significant which makes the individual reader easily understand the flow of the ideas of any topic covered in the study. This paper aims to determine and analyze the linguistic features frequently used in theses of teacher education students at Batangas ...
