Yahveh (Yahweh, Yahvé, Yah y Yavé así como sus variantes Iehová, Jehowah o Jehová) es un nombre propio que utiliza el Antiguo Testamento en el idioma hebreo para llamar a Dios. La forma escrita de este nombre, el tetragrámaton יהוה, no aparece en ninguno de los manuscritos existentes del Nuevo Testamento, que fue escrito en griego. Los manuscritos del Nuevo Testamento, en sus citas a textos del Antiguo Testamento en donde se encuentra el tetragrámaton en la Biblia hebrea, presentan el título griego Κύριος ("Señor"), al igual que la gran mayoría de los manuscritos de la Septuaginta, la antigua traducción griega del Antiguo Testamento. De esta antigua traducción sobreviven cuatro manuscritos que contienen, en medio del texto griego, el tetragrámaton hebreo y uno que presenta la transliteración Ιαω del nombre יהוה. Es la opinión de muchos eruditos que la presencia del tetragrámaton en esos manuscritos se debe a una revisión hebraizante del texto original (que contenía o κύριος o Ιαω). Los manuscritos del Nuevo Testamento tampoco contienen ninguna transliteración del nombre יהוה, que se encuentra etimológicamente detrás de los nombres teofóricos Jesús, José, Mateo, Zacarías, como el nombre divino אל (El) está detrás de los nombres teofóricos Gabriel, Isabel, Miguel, Natanael. With regard to the original documents that were later included, with or without modification, in the New Testament, George Howard put forward in 1977 a hypothesis, not widely accepted, that their Greek-speaking authors may have used some form of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה) in their quotations from the Old Testament but that in all copies of their works this was soon replaced by the existing two names. Contrairement à la variété de noms absolus ou personnels de Dieu dans l'Ancien Testament, le Nouveau Testament n'en utilise que deux (Κύριος et Θεὀς), selon l'International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia. George Howard a avancé en 1977 une hypothèse, qui n'a pas été largement acceptée, selon laquelle les auteurs de langue grecque des documents contenus dans le Nouveau Testament auraient utilisé aussi une certaine forme du Tétragramme hébraïque (יהוה) dans leurs citations de l'Ancien Testament, mais ce nom aurait été rapidement remplacé dans toutes les copies de leurs œuvres, par les deux noms existants. La forme du Tétragramme aurait pu être יהוה (lettres hébraïques) ou 𐤉𐤅𐤄𐤅 (lettres paléo-hébraïques). Frank Shaw a proposé une autre hypothèse : les auteurs de ces documents auraient utilisé comme nom de Dieu dans leurs citations de l'Ancien Testament le nom Ιαω, qui aurait également disparu des manuscrits existants. On pourrait mentionner aussi le nom divin en forme abrégé présent en Apocalypse 19:1,3,4,6 dans l'expression "Alleluia", qui signifie "Louez Jah".
