In these buildings, in addition to municipal administration and the Jail, judicial hearings were held during the Empire. This topic was pioneeringly and exemplary addressed by architect Paulo Tedim Barreto (1906-1973) in a thesis published in 1947. Over time, other studies on the subject followed, but none were specifically dedicated to the successive Casas da Câmara e Cadeia built in the town, later city, of São Paulo. Barreto himself did not even include in his work an image of the last Casa da Câmara of São Paulo, an image now well known through a watercolor by Miguelzinho Dutra and a photograph by Militão Augusto de Azevedo. Based on a detailed reading of the minutes of the São Paulo Chamber, the present text, presented here in two parts, seeks in some way to contribute to the deepening of this fascinating subject.

These texts were part of the work entitled Arquivo Histórico de São Paulo, História Pública da Cidade, edited by the São Paulo Culture Department in 2011, during the administration of mayor Gilberto Kassab (1960- ).
The material selected, now revisited, covers the period from the 16th to the 20th century, and the choice was made not for the aesthetic value of the documents, but basically for their potential to evoke “seminal aspects of the historical trajectory of São Paulo”, according to words of the eminent professor Ulpiano Bezerra de Meneses (1936- ), author of the generous preface that opened the aforementioned publication.

Now, we return to this family, due to a controversy that arose in the steering committee of the Brotherhood of the Holy House of Mercy of São Paulo brought to the fore in the press in 1888. The facts that occurred in the year of the abolition of slavery reveal not only aspects of the personality of those involved, but also confirm the elitist social practices adopted by a rural oligarchy that was becoming an emerging bourgeoisie and the urban strategies developed by its most daring members in order to obtain more properties, power, wealth and prestige for them and their family group.

The works dedicated to the subject are old and outdated, because - what is today primordial -, did not have the possibility to enjoy the vastness of knowledge made available to the current researchers thanks to the web. The research we are offering is a result of information technology and the dedication of thousands of professionals who, within cultural institutions around the world, strive to share universal knowledge.

Marcel Proust (1871-1922), a great French writer, stands out in the world literature, among other... more Marcel Proust (1871-1922), a great French writer, stands out in the world literature, among other peculiarities, for having used the arts - painting and music, mainly - as a stylistic resource used to better elucidate aspects of his work In search for lost time (c.1909-1922).
Nourishing a deep love for painting and music, the author had as one of his favorite methods to evoke the real through the dissection of works of art. "He was not himself a painter or a musician, but painting and music gave him great pleasure." This love is evident not only in the fictional construction of notable figures such as the painter Elstir and the composer Vinteuil, but also by the elaboration of vigorous metaphors, sometimes filled with visual images or full of sound sensations, which permeate the work, in which the novelist uses both modes of art as means of expression in the quest to achieve "the essence of things, feelings and characters."
Literary criticism has already made pouring rivers of ink into this fundamental aspect of the Recherche. For example, the book called Paintings in Proust: the visual companion to In Search of Lost Time (2008), by Eric Karpeles, in which the American painter dedicated himself to gather the images of hundreds of paintings mentioned by Proust throughout his vast novel.
Concerning the relevance of the music in the aforementioned masterpiece, this subject has also been approached recurrently in a number of studies.
Other artistic manifestations mentioned in the masterpiece of Proust also became object of investigation by the critic, among them, the architecture.
The decorative arts were likewise often cited in different parts of the Recherche: stained glass, tapestries, pottery by Emile Gallé (1846-1904), porcelain from Saxe, cachepots, Chinese porcelain plates and platters, Japanese cloisonnés, bonsai, luxury items from Maison Cartier, etc. Even beautiful dresses and dressing gowns executed by Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) served for the French novelist, who was ecstatic to the beauty wherever it manifested, to establish a relationship between each of these sophisticated objects and certain characters, among them the Narrator himself.
Proust was sensitive to all manifestations of art. In addition to literature, painting and music, the decorative arts also attracted him enormously, especially since, in his time, innovative currents of decoration began to emerge and compete with each other. By influencing each other, these currents would overcome the vulgar culture of pictorial academics and historicist eclecticism which hitherto prevailed in painting, architecture, and applied arts on both sides of the English Channel, both in Victorian England and in the later important continental countries of the time, France, Germany and Austria.
Proust sought to keep up with the artistic vanguards of his time, as was the case with the music of Wagner, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky. He was seduced by the flashy sounds, choreographies, and décors of the Russian ballets, but, on the other hand, he never understood the aesthetic proposal of Cubism, as he certainly would not sympathize with German Expressionism, had he known it.
After all, there were insurmountable aesthetic limits for a man like him, born in the second half of the nineteenth century, atheist (or at least agnostic), but fundamentally inclined to worship the Beautiful as a true religion. He identified himself with the refined and elegant aesthetics of the early moments of Modernism, but he would surely never adhere to the primitive deformations that came to prevail in the first artistic currents of the twentieth century (Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism).
As far as interior decoration is concerned, he understood very well the need for the renewal of the decorative languages that had hitherto been in force, tied to historicism and collectivism, although it seems never to have been in favor of a particular tendency, in terms of architecture or decoration. More than once he wrote that he was not interested in furniture and ornamental objects, whether to decorate the environment in which he lived or to form collections.
He always lived in his parents' house, arranged according to the conventional taste of the social class to which they belonged, the French high middle class, and after their death he kept most of his paternal belongings. But when he was forced to move to smaller apartments, he kept his mind practical enough to dispose of many of them. Living for the last few years in reclusion, because of the writing of his endless work, he no longer received at home nor gave importance to anything that concerned domestic concerns.
He always faced with great empathy the beautiful worksthose of fine appearance, conceived by great masters, ancient or contemporary: renowned paintings, visited in museums or traveling to the distant places where they were exposed; iridescent, fragile and exotic glasses of Gallé, which he bought to offer them as gifts; luxurious and exquisite costumes created by Fortuny, who wore the most beautiful and elegant ladies of Parisian society at the time; Japanese cloisonnnés, probably presented by a friend who worked in a house importing art objects from the Far East. But his aesthetic appreciation was always disinterested, nothing appealed to him. Works of art, objects of adornment, such as his favorite flowers, whose direct contact he avoided for health reasons -white or pink aubines, apple blossoms, chrysanthemums, orchids, and irises- all is in the Recherche. The styles of decoration and the objects that composed them appear in the novel, for the most part, or to aid in the reconstruction of the time of the different episodes narrated, or in the psychological composition of certain characters.
In the orbit of the private life of the writer, furniture and objects mattered only to him insofar as they constituted repositories of his deepest sentimental memories. Only what he allowed to be clothed with "the intimate and splendid images" retained in the depths of his soul, an immaterial coating which he called patina, could give Proust the emotional security that was so necessary to him. These were the pieces of furniture and the objects of adornment that had meant to him. Beautiful or ugly, valuable or insignificant, these things deserved to be kept close to you. This is precisely the case, for example, of the "horrible" bronze sculpture acquired by his parents, which he insisted throughout his life on preserving.
These are, basically, the issues that we will address in this study on Marcel Proust and interior decoration.

Built in the mid-seventeenth century, the third Jesuit church in São Paulo was ruined in March 1896, due to the heavy rains of late summer. It had been closed for a few years, and given the disinterest of the government of the state of São Paulo, at the time administrator of the seventeenth century church, it fell down for simple lack of maintenance.
Although venerable, the building was considered very rude in appearance and therefore impossible to continue existing among the modern eclectic buildings recently built in the vicinity. Its ruins were destroyed without remorse and in the place the government had erected official constructions in extension to the palace of the government, contiguous building that from 1881 took the place of the Jesuit convent.
Inside the ruined church, there was an altarpiece at the back of the high altar and in each of the six side chapels. Carving works then considered of little artistic value. By way of remembrance or testimony, parts of the main altarpiece, which was intact, and some carved woods fragments from other semi-destroyed altarpieces were collected. The rest was simply discarded, or, as they have said, distributed among characters of high economic and social standing.
Unconnected, the pieces of collected wood were installed in an "artistic" arrangement in the church of the Sacred Heart of Maria (1897-1899). They returned only to the Pátio do Colégio in the late 1970s, when the replica of the ancient temple was concluded (1970-1979), re-established as a way of honoring the Fourth Centennial (1954) of the city of São Paulo. Exposed in the main chapel, with the reform of this chapel, occurred in 2009, the fragments were removed from the interior of the temple.
Our objective in this work is to identify each of the altarpieces on the eve of the disaster of 1896, correlating them with the lateral chapels of the old church, with the successive invocations they had, according to the sacred images they harbored, and to draw stylistic considerations to respect for these ancient and relevant examples of religious art in São Paulo, now disappeared, from photographs taken immediately after the disaster.
In addition, we discussed the supposed influence of Hispanic-American religious art in the creation of the famous 18th century litlle monkeys wood carving panel.

Belmonte (Benedito Carneiro Bastos Barreto, 1895-1947), historian, draftsman, researcher of the material history of the bandeirista era, came across one of these unfamiliar words - tamboladeira - and in the middle of the last century tried to unveil the meaning. The result of the research was only included in his book In the time of the bandeirantes (1939) after it had been revised and enlarged (c.1948), because at the time of the launch of the work the author had not yet solved the question. He was quite proud of his study, for he had finally recovered the memory of an object that seemed hopelessly lost. Unfortunately, he was mistaken. After all, what are tamboladeiras?

Designed by an Italian engineer named Tomás (Tommaso) Bezzi (1844-1915)- a professional chosen for his talent, but also for being part of the intimate circle of Emperor D. Pedro II (1825-1891) -, the palace was designed according to the Neo- Renaissance style, in vogue in Turin , Italy, hometown of the engineer and where he studied civil engineering.
The formal repertoire employed in the construction was therefore Italianate. Both the author and the contractor, and probably the majority of the workers, were of Italian origin, the latter being the only ones then technically capable of carrying out the task in the manner required by the designer. Much of the construction material was imported, since Brazil at that time produced little that could be used in a luxury construction.
Although the building was built inside the newly introduced Italian culture in the city of São Paulo, the final result, which surprised everyone, was accepted as a true national artistic creation. The Paulistas - like the other Brazilians - were enthusiastic and proud because they had a monumental construction in their country that was so highly admired. For what reasons was the building so pleasing? This is what we will try to answer.
Soon, the building will undergo extensive intervention. One of the most significant internal spaces, the entrance hall, is with its spatial integrality threatened by the approved project.

For a long time this interest grew and prospered, fueled mainly by bandeirismo, a historical theme surrounded by a strong ideological load that for decades supported the conception that Paulistas of the 20th century had the right, and the moral duty, to exert political hegemony over the rest of the country.
For social and political reasons, the theme of bandeirismo lost ground in the second half of the last century and the interest in history in the Vila de São Paulo only raised the curiosity of some researchers on the eve of the 450th anniversary of the city (2004).
For our part, we have developed for several years an independent inquiry that enabled us to reach a synthetic interpretive point of view, from the updated bibliographical review and the detailed reading of the first volumes of the city documents related to the Vila de São Paulo. And our agreement or not with the conclusions reached by certain experts at that time led us to write an article published two years later in the Revista do Arquivo Municipal - Municipal Archive Magazine - n. 204 (CAMPOS, 2006, p.10-34).
Now we return to this important subject, important at least to Brazilians who are interested in their past. We have done a review and a great amplification in the previously published text and we introduce in it other aspects very relevant to the knowledge of the material life of the old São Paulo.

It was under the Monarchy that the process of modernization of Brazilian society began. From a pre-capitalist society based on monoculture agriculture and slavery, it ended at the end of a few decades, to the condition of a society with certain bourgeois characteristics, based on agrarian capitalism, of a dependent nature.
From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, the idea of modernization came to be strongly defended in the city of São Paulo by elements of society influenced by international bourgeois culture. Elements that, supported by engineers from outside, from the Court and from abroad, and from immigrant labor (Portuguese, German and later Italian), promoted a true revolution in the architecture produced in the city.
The introduction of new materials and constructive techniques, the propagation of new architectural styles, the assimilation of new ways of living and new habits of hygiene and comfort, the formulation of new building standards, as well as the flourishing of the intense process of cultural mutation that subjected the society of São Paulo, especially from the final phase of the Brazilian Empire (1822-1889).
Investigating the different aspects of the process described above is, therefore, the fundamental objective of this doctoral thesis.

Thus, the first phase corresponds to a particular language adapted to rammed earth, in a first moment still established in aesthetic experiences of Portuguese and Brazilian tradition in the previous century, and in a second moment, from 1830 or 40 more or less, converted into a type of architecture, in which a few neoclassical elements are absorbed by constructions that still look conservative. In the second phase, which started in the 1850s, the brick technique and courtly Neoclassicism were introduced and disseminated, brought here thanks to the work of technicians and artisans recently arrived from Rio de Janeiro. Professionals welcomed with great willingness by the representatives of the provincial government and the local elite, anxious, for the sake of status, to be able to share the culture produced in the political and administrative headquarters of the Empire, even if that culture was simplified and arrived within a few decades delay. In the third and final phase, with the enrichment of the Province and its capital, and with the more intense diffusion of international bourgeois culture, there is an intense search for updating both in the technical-constructive aspect of buildings, as well as in its hygienic, programmatic and aesthetic aspect. The events then happened quickly, making the neoclassical style coexist in the city, still diluting between the middle layers of the São Paulo society, with occurrences of stylistic transition and with forms already frankly historicist or eclectic, based on models coming directly from abroad. Among the latter forms there will be considerable variation in relation to the cultural influences suffered and the plastic and expressive results obtained.
