Museums that do not have a conservator on staff can still achieve a high standard of conservation care. Basic steps to achieve this goal include: consulting with conservators, conducting assessments, prioritizing tasks, writing a plan, finding funding, and conducting improvements in phases. A brief overview of roles, responsibilities, and qualifications aids in understanding when it is advantageous to engage conservation services. Examples of common pitfalls, such as forgoing conservation consultations or mismatching experience and tasks, serve to guide the reader toward sound standards of conservation management. Common conservation myths are addressed in three case studies to elucidate common challenges and how they may be addressed. The basic model presented should serve well to improve conservation management, conservation project design, and improve a museum's success in attracting external funding for conservation related projects.

The mammals of Paraguay are still poorly known. We report a new genus for the country, Abrawayaomys, a spiny cricetid rodent endemic for the Interior Atlantic Forest. This record extends the distribution of the genus approximately 100 km, and west of the Paraná River. This addition increases the number of mammals in Paraguay to 184 and verifies that rodents are the most diverse group of mammals in the country. We outline identifying morphological characters of Abrawayaomys and elaborate on the significance of this finding for conservation and biogeography in the region.

In 1990, the United States passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), requiring the repatriation of ancestral remains, funerary, and sacred objects from museums to source communities. Since then, hundreds of thousands of repatriations have occurred, allowing for respectful treatment of ancestors and reconnections to spiritual, communal practice, and ceremony. In Canada, repatriation has been recommended by the Assembly of First Nations, the Canadian Museum Association, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, but there is no federal law. Does Canada have a functioning alternative? This examination provides a comparison of how repatriation differs in the two countries, demonstrating that case-by-case negotiations in Canada currently allow for more flexibility and customization to the needs of different Indigenous communities but that the transparency, coordination, and funding associated with NAGPRA would be a significan...

The main object of this work was to describe the different methods for collecting insects, conventional as well as bio-diversity prospection. Among the first group, the methods are grouped-in samplings in the soil and in plants, which could be on the foliage, bark of trees, grains, fruits and the use of traps. In the second group, it describes the light trap, butterfly breeders and the method for bees and lonely wasps.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Estación Experimental Agrícola Fab...

Photographic resources are well known within museum contexts. However, these images are rarely considered in terms of how they enhance the historical value of museum objects, construct aesthetic and ethnographic meanings, and interpret museum collection practices. This paper examines the multi-media collections of Eliot Elisofon, an internationally known photographer and filmmaker who traveled in Africa from 1943-1972. The Elisofon collection at the National Museum of African Art contains both photographic materials and three-dimensional objects created and collected in the course of Elisofon's professional career. I explore the ways in which Elisofon's images have been used to illustrate objects in situ, represent cultural contexts of use and meaning, and create multiple layers of authentication for the objects (i.e., artistic, documentary, ethnographic). Attention is also given to the importance of photography as a collection practice in and of itself.

As a result of the colonial entanglements of many natural history collections,
much of the world’s biodiversity heritage is housed in Europe. Increasingly, natural
history institutions have started to address this history. However, computational
methods for analysing large collections often consist in static visualisations of
collection provenance. We argue that interactive visualisations allow users to
understand collections better: their content gaps as well as interesting patterns and
trends. Using a dataset containing metadata of five million entries from the botanical
collection of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, we created an interactive visualisation with
Microsoft PowerBI. The visualisation depicts colonial origins and the botany
collection’s movement to the Netherlands over time on an interactive map and timeline.
This project thus addresses a gap in historical research on the colonial legacy of Dutch
botanical collections, and also a gap in computer science research regarding
computational techniques for distant reading of natural heritage data. Our interactive
visualisation increases the accessibility of the available scientific data. It also
contributes to understanding the cultural history of natural history collections and
ultimately, highlights the importance of accurate and accessible visual representations
of biodiversity collection histories. This project suggests a way forward for natural
history museums grappling with their colonial past.

The avian osteological collection of the Institut Mediterrani d’Estudis Avançats (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB, Esporles, Mallorca) In this article we present the osteological collection of extant birds curated at the Institut Mediterrani d’Estudis Avançats (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB). This collection is part of the general vertebrate collection of the IMEDEA. It includes 2,330 specimens available via GBIF and Taxo&Map. The collection consists of complete, near complete, and partially disarticulated skeletons, all preserved dry. The specimens are from various sources: collections, donations and exchanges. Most specimens were prepared at IMEDEA. All the records we present here have been reviewed and georeferenced for publication. The collection includes 411 species from 83 families, most of them from the Western Palearctic. Data published through GBIF: https://doi.org/10.15470/ab0faa Key words: Birds, Baleares, Vertebrates, Skeletons, Collections

Garbage Collection (GC) is a process of automatic memory reclamation from the objects that are no longer required by the mutator. The execution time of the application and memory reclaimed by garbage collector are important factors that influence the selection of a specific garbage collector while selecting a specific one. The current research paper selects a suitable garbage collector on the basis of the above mentioned two factors. In this paper the execution time of SPECjvm2008 benchmarks and memory reclaimed by a garbage collector while executing these application is determined in real JVM. We further propose the optimal values of the above two issues that can be compromised, if the an application is to be executed with the garbage collector.

Through the documentary revision of different texts, in an interview made to its director and the use of the methodological tool known as non-participating observation. The collections and information services offered by International Board on Books for Young People Mexico are described and analyzed. Considering the guidelines and components recommended by different studies and international institutions to the development of librarian child and juvenile services, as well as the main guidelines to conform collections in these places. We conclude that BS-IBBY Library (International Board on Books for Young People) Mexico/A leer, completely fulfills those guidelines and, furthermore, it permanently generates further information services.

Exposure to an atmosphere rich in volatile pollutants can endanger collections in museums, galleries, libraries or archives. Monitoring volatile pollutants in museum microclimates remains an unusual practice in most institutions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be released by many sources, including the artefacts’ materials themselves. The presence of pollutants in an enclosed space with poor ventilation, adding to high temperature and relative humidity levels or significant fluctuations, may increase the risk of damage for the more susceptible materials. The tendency observed in museums to enclose artefacts in vitrines or boxes may contribute to the formation of microclimates with high VOCs concentration. Based on the studies developed in the last decades, this work intends to draw attention to the risks associated with gaseous pollutants in museum environment and outline some recommendations that encourage cultural heritage institutions to implement a pollutant monitoring pl...

Having to constantly shift materials to make space while maintaining call number order can be challenging and time consuming, particularly when needing to move materials quickly. Most of the library literature around alternative shelving systems is focused on user experience and resource discoverability. A shelf address system makes it easier for library professionals to quickly organize and locate items, making it an ideal choice for a staff only area. Using a shelf based address system allows quick insertion of materials into any available shelf space without worrying about call number order, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, some of which can have unfortunate results. In this session we’ll weigh the pros/cons of a shelf based address system, explain our positive and negative experiences using this system at our library, and help you learn from our mistakes so that you can succeed if implementing this type of shelving system. The benefits far outweigh the pitfalls,...

The present article aims to contribute with studies of collectionism and collectors, enphazising speacially the relations with books. The study is the result of two interviews, which were specially designed to better understand the particularities of the book collectors and their relationship with time and space. The results can support the idea that the relation with books, as collectable objects, are different from any other object.

A coleta e a organização das in...
