Essential physical and mental requirements have been recognized as necessary for excellence in sport. However, minimal research has examined the lives of high performance athletes as a whole and their perception of balance or imbalance in their life. The present study, therefore, set out to explore elite athletes' perceptions of balance in their lives. In-depth, semi-structured interviews and modified self-report diaries were conducted with 10 elite athletes (5 currently competing and 5 retired athletes). Inductive analysis of interview transcripts revealed that half of these athletes (2 current and 3 retired) defined balance primarily as having a vision or goal and striving towards it, while the other half (3 current and 2 retired) defined balance as respecting different parts of their lives. Balance in these athletes' lives was perceived to fluctuate in cycles in accordance with their needs and wants for particular times in their lives. Athletes identified six prerequisites for attaining balance: (1) make a conscious decision to have balance; (2) have strong self discipline; (3) enjoy what you are doing; (4) have a supportive network; (5) have leisure time; and (6) be in the moment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the mental skills used by professional ice hockey players and determine the extent to which Orlick's "Wheel of Excellence" (1992, 1996) could be applied to these athletes. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten National Hockey League players who had collectively played over 4,500 NHL games, and scored 1,025 goals. The results indicated that Orlick's "Wheel of Excellence" elements (commitment, belief, full focus, positive images, mental readiness, distraction control and constructive evaluation) were common to all elite athletes interviewed. The element of fun and enjoyment was also found to be significant for NHL players. The preservation of rich quotes offer valuable insights and strategies for excelling. A survey of the mental aspects of professional hockey was also completed by 27 NHLers to corroborate the relative importance of each of the mental skills identified in Orlick's model. Overall the results were consistent with other recent research into the mental aspects of high level performers.

Excellence gaps in education are defined as the differences in rates of advanced accomplishments between various groups, which violate notions of equity. For example, despite having equal talents, only four women have won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1.8% of 219 awarded). Other excellence gaps exist in many fields between social classes, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and many other groups. Indeed, excellence gaps in education are supposed to exist in all areas of learning and across all domains, age groups, and educational levels. They appear in a variety of forms, for example, as disparities in top performances, participation in advanced courses, enrollment in prestigious educational institutions, recommendations, scholarships, and awards.

The ancient Greeks, in all its glory of culture and knowledge, have one thing in mind when they live, work and play -that thing is known as areté. Areté in its basic sense means "excellence of any kind". The ancient Greeks applied the term to any thing: from the excellence of a chimney to the excellence of a bull being bred to the excellence of a man. The meaning of the word changes depending on the context of it being used since everything has its own peculiar excellence; the areté of a man is different from the areté of a horse. Plato provided the initial meaning of areté, where it can be seen in Allegory of the Cave 1 . Plato, in his definition of areté, presumed that the aristocratic class to be exemplary of it: "The root of the word is the same as aristos, the word which shows superlative ability and superiority, and "aristos" was constantly used in the plural to denote the nobility 2 ." As time progresses, the usage of areté had developed to include quieter virtues, such as dikaiosyne (justice) and sophrosyne (self-restraint). Plato attempted to produce a moral philosophy that incorporated this new usage (and in the process developed ideas that played a central role in Christian thoughts). It was Aristotle and his work that the doctrine of areté found its fullest fulfillment 3 .

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the communication process between coaches and athletes in their natural setting. Using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and journals, data were collected from six female members of a junior national ski team, aged 17 to 19 years old, and their two male coaches. The first interviews, conducted just before the beginning of the competitive season, established that both coaches and athletes believed in open, twoway communication. Subsequent observation during the competitive season revealed that despite this consensus the coaches and athletes had trouble at times interacting according to this philosophy. In an effort to deepen understanding concerning the communication process it was decided to analyze some of these communication problems, with the use of a model of communication proposed for coaching. The results indicate that many factors influence communication, some due to the context and others related to the individuals' past experiences. Specific issues regarding the effect of silence and the differences in communication between good times and bad times are discussed, as well as certain general themes such as the importance of a positive approach, enjoyment, and communication about psychological concerns. Practical suggestions for the education of coaches and implications for sport psychology consultants are presented.

Demands placed on enterprises in the area of improving their functioning are still higher and higher in the present time. If enterprises wish to succeed on markets with strong competitive pressure, they have to focus their attention towards the achievement of the status of so-called excellence. One of possible ways to achieve this status is also innovation. The aim of this article is to point out the role of innovations for assessing the excellence of business subjects. Primary and secondary research has shown that approaches to assessing the excellence of business subjects underwent and are undergoing constant changes, individual areas and criteria serving for the general assessment of excellence are being changed and amended. And innovations have been gradually included to larger or lesser extent to all mentioned approaches.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a magnetic statesman in Bangladesh. An entrepreneurial mindset in political leadership by Mujib helped facilitate and overcome trials, be conclusive, and receive accountability for consequences. The study aimed towards a search of his perseverance. Research question of this study is how the father of the nation became magnetic and excellent statesman in Bangladesh. The study observed that he was a great statesman during his tenure and he proved his worthiness. But conspirators were harmful and dangerous and had him slain with his family members and relatives who is a great friend and well-wishers of Bangles' on 15th August, 1975. Mujib was a man of accomplishment; without his strong determination to bring about pulsating change, it is unlikely that Bangladesh would have attained independence. A great leader Mujib, put all of his political wisdom and patriotism for nurturing the welfare of the country fellow men till his last breath but on no occasion, he surrendered before sinful forces. Mujib is one of the political philosophers whose ideology is still valid for human progress and capacity building for organizations.

John Rawls’s strict theory of perfectionism would have more appeal if it were reconstructed by balancing it with moderate cultural perfectionism. In his work, A Theory of Justice, John Rawls framed the modern idea of legal perfectionism. In his thought experiment, Rawls gave different players various theories of justice that contrast with his “original position,” in which principles of justice are decided from behind a veil of ignorance. The first of the theories, strict perfectionism, argued society should be structured in a way that produces the utmost levels of excellence in someone, but not everyone. The second theory, moderate perfectionism, asserted that society should be arranged to achieve excellence, but not at the expense of meeting society’s basic needs. Rawls created these theories solely to be rejected, rejecting them primarily because of the controversies inherent in defining excellence. Rawls endorses political liberalism, which pursues the good through an overlapping consensus while avoiding the trappings of the controversy he sees in perfectionism. However, there is no reason Rawls’s preferred method of pursuing the good be applied to a reconstructed theory of perfectionism. Rather than relying on a comprehensive definition of “the good,” excellence can be defined by an overlapping consensus promoting both social and personal maximization, allowing “the good” to be encompassed by a set of pursuits toward excellence.

Look around at some established colleges in this country and what they state as their mottos, you will discover a common core: truth (Harvard University, Yale University, University of Wisconsin-Madison), freedom (Stanford University), democracy (University of Texas-Austin, Ohio State University), and moral (University of Pennsylvania). Higher education institutions today are committed to teaching students to how to think critically and rhetorically; teaching them how to write and calculate; and teaching them the skills in their respective disciplines. Just as important as these goals are, the fundamental goal of developing intellectual virtues is being neglected. It doesn't take long before one realizes that not many universities around are as aspired to pay much attention to transforming students to be good citizens as the big names mentioned above are.

Over the past 50 years, the role of pharmacists has evolved along with the health care needs of our population. In addition to dispensing medications and ensuring patient safety, today’s pharmacists are taking a larger role as medical counselors, educators and advocates. They are integral part of the health care team, and are among the most trusted and accessible health care professionals. This accessibility allows them to perform more patient care activities, including counseling, medication management, and preventive care screenings. Beyond the care provided to individual patients, pharmacists have expanded their reach to influence the public health of communities. A pharmacist is uniquely positioned to provide disease state management through appropriate medication therapy management that has been demonstrated to improve patient outcomes and decrease overall health care costs. This role is more important than ever as the environment is demanding new practice and payment models th...

This chapter presents an account of an angrily virtuous, or patient, person informed by research on emotion in empirical and philosophical psychology. It is argued that virtue for anger is determined by excellence and deficiency with respect to all three of anger’s psychological functions: appraisal, motivation, and communication. Many competing accounts of virtue for anger assess it by attention to just one function; it is argued that singular evaluations of a person’s anger will ignore important dimensions of anger that bear on virtue and vice. Thus, possessing excellence with respect to only one function of anger is insufficient for virtue. The account is also extended to the characteristic vices of anger: wrath and meekness.

This article is concerned with the macro-cultural ideal or institutional myth of excellence as defined and used in the evaluation of academic staff as part of an institutional logic. Such logics ‘prescribe what constitutes legitimate behaviour and provide taken-for-granted conceptions of what goals are appropriate and what means are legitimate to achieve these goals’ as stated by Pache and Santos Insead. In the case study university, this logic is reflected in the identification of ostensibly objective, gender-neutral key performance indicators of excellence. Lamont suggests that evaluation is necessarily subjective. Drawing on 23 qualitative interviews with those involved in such evaluation, this article looks at variation in the definition of excellence and in the evaluative practices in decision-making fora. It raises questions about the implications of this for gender inequality and for the myth of excellence and ultimately for the legitimacy of the organisation.

RADAR is an excellence self-assessment tool which is commonly used to assess results and approaches in excellence models. It could also be used successfully in assessing the strategy formulation process in Dubai's government. The Thesis is a qualitative research that deploys a case study approach to understand the role of RADAR techniques and practices, and how these can be used in assessing the Dubai Governement 's strategy formulation process, focusing on the justice and security sectors in general and the Dubai Police Force in particular. The researcher always attempts to answer particular questions about why and how RADAR informs and helps in assessing and controlling the strategy formulation process. The study obtained valid information from semi-structured interviews with 17 senior and middle government, security and Police staff members working in the Dubai Police Force, Civil Defense and Immigration Departments. Generally, the findings indicated that: Firstly, RADAR can be used successfully in these researched organisations and can be seen to be important in security assessment function when taking into consideration the cultural aspects of Dubai which are based on Arab and Islamic cultural values. Secondly, the strategy formulation process in Dubai Governement is affected widely by Islamic and Arab culture. Thirdly, the definition of 'citizen' is very complex as Dubai is a cosmopolitan city. This makes it difficult to cater to the stakeholders' needs in the strategy formulation process due to the diversity of the cultures of the different nationalities. Fourthly, the bureaucratic nature of managers in the public sector makes it difficult to deploy the excellence selfassessment tools as they tend to believe that assessment is merely criticism rather than that it supports continuous improvement. Finally, the leadership of Dubai Governement plays a crucial role in leading the strategic thinking and quality drive in both public and private sectors. The leadership vision is to cater to the cultural needs of the different nationalities living in Dubai and translate them into sound strategies. XI Dedication This study is dedicated to my family: father, mother, and children (Rashid, Mariam and Hamad). God bless them. They have wished me all success, and given me encouragement, prayers, and support .. Exceptional dedication for my Angel model (my wife Um Rashid) who provided me with full support, motivation and gave her continuous prayer until my research was completed.

We often understand institutions as some kind of durable structure that transcends human lives and their intentions. The walls of the institution protect its inhabitants from the dangers of the outside world, but at the price of immobility of body and mind. Institutionalization is not merely a wall that separates the inside from the outside; it also guides the way we think and act. The university is perhaps the modern institution par excellence, and its walls are crumbling fast. ‘Excellence’, the main qualifier of academic activity today, has little to do with old academic ideals of reason or Bildung. It is a self-referential system that has posited its own success as its primary goal. The protecting walls surrounding universities are now seen as barriers to developing forms of useful expertise that fit the demands of the knowledge economy. This open issue continues ephemera's engagement with the crucial theme of the changining nature of the university. It specificially explores new forms of academic institutionalization as well as attempts to escape from them.

Adult performance of high ability individuals has seldom been researched. Current results suggest that adult excellence occurs at lower rates than high ability individuals identified in their infancy or youth, with few cases of high intellectual abilities among adults that yield excellence products. This paper focuses on the analysis of the relative frequency of biographical traits that are associated with high ability as well as to the opportunities that allow building particular knowledge structures that are non-conventional and support innovation in people who excelled. A retrospective biographical analysis was performed on a sample of 120 individuals that generated renowned excellence products, in different fields, in the XXth century. Variables associated to high abilities were: precocity; learning problems; social problems in school; and academic excellence. And the variables associated with the generation of knowledge structures that support innovation were: academic-professi...

The paper develops a new model of the essential factors required to be a top business school in the world for the benefit of schools recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan. Globally, top business schools are those that excel in research, attract strong faculty, and successfully foster student development. The present research considers these factors in relation to HEC recognition; HECs stringent criteria are disliked by many educational entrepreneurs, for whom the profit motive can sometimes trump the delivery of high-quality programs, resulting in the awarding of spurious degrees.HECs criteria are intended to prevent situations like this, which became increasingly common in Pakistan and reduced educational quality. Under HEC recognition, top business schools and programs can once again be recognized. However, many business schools in Pakistan still have unqualified faculty, poor student development, and little or no research output. The present study shows ...

The participants were two groups of students from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures: a study-abroad group in Costa Rica and a Spanish class on the U.S. campus. The main objective of the project was to give the U.S. campus students the opportunity to participate in the foreign culture through their peers’ experiences and thereby to raise their desire to participate in a study-abroad experience themselves and to continue studying Spanish. Participants engaged in daily e-mail communication in Spanish and a weekly photograph exchange. As was envisioned, the TC resulted in a positive outcome. Evaluations, journals, and portfolios showed that the “appetite” for studyabroad programs was enha...
