This research works towards the integration of cultural factors in global information systems like the Web or digital libraries to enhance global access to information and services. In this context, we study cultural differences in categorization and classification by means of card sorting experiments in combination with observations and interviews. An initial analysis of data collected in Pakistan and UK reveals a number of differences between Pakistani and British participants as to how they classify every-day objects. The differences found suggest a number of design solutions for cultural inclusion.

Abstract: The lack of comprehensive sighting data sets precludes the application of standard habitat suitability modeling approaches to predict distributions of the majority of marine mammal species on very large scales. As an alternative, we developed an ecological niche model to map global distributions of 115 cetacean and pinniped species living in the marine environment using more readily available expert knowledge about habitat usage. We started by assigning each species to broad-scale niche categories with respect to depth, sea- ...

The banking sector provides an interesting focus for the problems of information provision to support decision making as it is undergoing a period of rapid intensification of competition and fundamental change where new products and services are both agents and consequences of change. This paper will introduce the banking sector in order to provide a background for the paper and

Fish production can be limited by biological and physical factors that occur. In the past, fish production models have considered the modeled system to be homogenous and do not incorporate the spatial environment. However, abiotic factors such as food supply and water quality may differ spatially. Growth rate potential integrates a physiological-based model (bioenergetics) of fish growth with the physical environment. The research integrated the growth rate potential model, with GIS, to spatially map the growth rate potential of juvenile striped bass Morone saxatilis in Albemarle Sound, North Carolina to identify essential fish habitat (EFH), for the species, during the summer and early-fall months. GIS allows for the presentation and analysis of distributional patterns and spatial modeling with a spatially explicit data base. In our approach, GIS provided the necessary platform for mapping spatial data and for conducting spatially explicit modeling. Water quality data (temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity) were obtained from North Carolina Department of Marine Fisheries (NCDMF) juvenile seine survey from 2002-2004. Geostatistical methods were used to extend the spatially explicit bioenergetics model into a dynamic environment. Ordinary kriging was used to interpolate the data into two- dimensional transects. ArcView 3.2 was utilized to run the juvenile striped bass model and the "Wisconsin" bioenergetics model. This paper documents and discusses the usefulness of integrating two technologies to predict fish production.

Digital libraries will replicate many of the features of traditional libraries, but they may also draw on techniques developed by video rental companies and bookstores in making information both readily accessible and attractively presented. A generalized schema for global information systems of this type is essential; it must address issues of data structure and system interoperability so that information of all types can be freely exchanged across whatever platforms may develop in the future. The ability to search, identify, and retrieve not only text but recorded sound and complex images depends on a systematic approach to handles and metadata. The mode of access to data will be partly determined by economic and social forces and could require additional tagging. The global digital library may well be an inevitable next stage in the evolution of information sharing, but its implementation requires a plan that addresses the complexities of these issues on a broadly conceived and c...

This paper tells the story of the definitionand implementation of a corporate informationinfrastructure standard within Norsk Hydro.Standards are widely considered as the mostbasic features of information infrastructures –public as well as corporate. This view isexpressed by a high level IT manager in Hydro:``The infrastructure shall be 100% standardized.'' Such standards are considered universalin the sense that there is just one standardfor each area or function, and that separatestandards should fit together – no redundancyand no inconsistency. Each standard is sharedby every actor within its use domain, and it isequal to everybody. Our story illustrates thatreality is different. The idea of the universalstandard is an illusion just like the treasureat the end of the rainbow. Each time one hasdefined a standard which is believed to becomplete and coherent, during implementationone discovers that there are elements lackingor incompletely specified while others have tobe ch...

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) seroprevalence in Kenya is unknown because of the lack of a practical and accurate diagnostic test or surveillance system. A novel serological assay was used to estimate the seroprevalence of Leishmania-specific antibodies, and Global Information System and spatial clustering techniques were applied to study the presence of spatial clusters in Parkarin and Loboi villages in Baringo District

Abstract. The ability to deal with a huge number of independent and heterogeneous repositories is the most critical problem in Global Information Systems. One approach to enable e cient query processing is by utilizing semantic descriptions (organized as ontologies) of such repositories whenever available.
