This paper discusses the use of genre theory for analysing information content of structured documents and mixed media training material. We describe an analysis phase of an ongoing research aimed at information reuse from Operation and Maintenance (O&M) manuals in training, consisting of spoken, multimedia and textual content. The content of training was given the form of templates. We used them successfully for locating reusable information contents available from O&M manuals and other information sources. These templates can also serve as a basis for designing XML document type definitions (DTD’s) for training content, or as draft versions of XSLT templates for defining reuse transformations from source to target documentation. While defining and hardening genres of training, we collected metainformation and knowledge the trainers possessed. We then formalised this as another set of genres for training. Based on our findings we suggest that genre theory can be used as 1) a framew...

The Sphinx-4 speech recognition system is the latest addition to Carnegie Mellon University's repository of Sphinx speech recognition systems. It has been jointly designed by Carnegie Mellon University, Sun Microsystems Laboratories and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories. It is differently designed from the earlier Sphinx systems in terms of modularity, flexibility and algorithmic aspects. It uses newer search strategies, is universal in its acceptance of various kinds of grammars and language models, types of acoustic ...

The Arabidopsis Nucleolar Protein Database (http://bioinf.scri.sari.ac.uk/cgi-bin/atnopdb/home) provides information on 217 proteins identified in a proteomic analysis of nucleoli isolated from Arabidopsis cell culture. The database is organized on the basis of the Arabidopsis gene identifier number. The information provided includes protein description, protein class, whether or not the plant protein has a homologue in the most recent human nucleolar proteome and the results of reciprocal BLAST analysis of the human proteome. In addition, for one-third of the 217 Arabidopsis nucleolar proteins, localization images are available from analysis of full-length cDNA–green fluorescent protein (GFP) fusions and the strength of signal in different parts of the cell—nucleolus, nucleolus-associated structures, nucleoplasm, nuclear bodies and extra-nuclear—is provided. For each protein, the most likely human and yeast orthologues, where identifiable through BLASTX analysis, are given with links to relevant information sources.

The main objective of this paper is to examine the opportunities, difficulties andchallenges of an effective social protection for the elderly population. The articleemphasizes the public policies of income and long term care, as well as the family asthe main informal source of support to that population. It is assumed that the lack ofautonomy to deal with the activities of the daily life and the lackness of income arethe main determinants of the "dependence" of the aged ones. The information usedare obtained from some demographic census and the Brazilian National HouseholdSample Survey [Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicilios (PNAD)].One of the conclusions is that in the micro level, the degree of dependence ofthe aged individuals is, in large deal, determined for the provision of income from theState. This suggests that when it reduces or increases social security benefits, the Stateis not only affecting individuals, but a considerable proportion of family income.Thi...

Abstract: Higher Education is increasingly relying on e-learning as a means of providing students with teaching and learning resources. Almost inevitably, this means that students interact with these learning resources through the medium of the computer screen. Although there have been significant advances in the design and implementation of online resources, exactly how students interact with these resources is a relatively new field of research. In this feasibility study students were asked to interact with a virtual learning environment, i.e. Blackboard, as well as Internet based resources, i.e. Ingenta and Wikipedia. Specifically, the students were asked to find the answer to a question provided, e.g. “what is classical conditioning?”orto locate a body of research related to a given topic, e.g. “theories of forgetting”. As they searched for the information the eye movements of the students were recorded using a Tobii X50 eye tracking system. The data gathered was analyseddynamic...

In this paper, several experiments about video categorization using a supervised learning approach are presented. To this end, the VideoCLEF 2008 evaluation forum has been chosen as experimental framework. After an analysis of the VideoCLEF corpus, it was found that video transcriptions are not the best source of information in order to identify the thematic of video streams. Therefore, two

The laboratory toxicologist is frequently faced with the challenge of selecting appropriate vehicles or developing utilitarian formulations for use in in vivo nonclinical safety assessment studies. Although there are many vehicles available that may meet physical and chemical requirements for chemical or pharmaceutical formulation, there are wide differences in species and route of administration specific to tolerances to these vehicles. In current practice, these differences are largely approached on a basis of individual experience as there is only scattered literature on individual vehicles and no comprehensive treatment or information source. This approach leads to excessive animal use and unplanned delays in testing and development. To address this need, a consulting firm and three contract research organizations conducted a rigorous data mining operation of control (vehicle) data from studies dating from 1991 to present. The results identified 65 single component vehicles used...

Travel research consistently shows the importance of word-of-mouth (WOM) information sources in the travel decision-making process. Friends and relatives have been identified as organic image-formation agents, and it has been emphasized that this WOM information is one of the most relied-upon sources of information for destination selection. While there has been recognition of the importance of WOM information sources on consumer behaviour in tourism, little has been performed to understand more specifically how and what behaviour is influenced. This study examined the differing influences of friends and relatives vs. other travellers on the travel choices and behaviours of 412 visitors to the North Queensland Region in Australia. More specifically, the present study compared the following four groups of respondents: those who indicated that they obtained travel information from friends/relatives and other travellers (n = 70); those who obtained information from friends/relatives only (n = 121); those who obtained information from other travellers only (n = 105); and those who obtained information from neither (i.e. no WOM) (n = 116). The results indicated that there were significant differences across the four groups with respect to demographic characteristics, other information sources used, accommodation and transportation used, and travel activities in the destination. However, the groups did not differ in their image of the destination.

The goal of this communication is to classify and analyze the main sources that provide access to online newspapers and their contents. The basic criterion for determining the type of products has been the primary function they do for the user, which has led us to establish four main areas: access to newspapers, information search, information clipping and contents aggregation. From each of these classes, are described and analyzed various types: directories, historical press archives, newspaper press archives, press databases, press clipping, online clipping, manually aggregators, automated aggregators and social aggregators. It also shows some significant examples.

This chapter has two goals. The first goal is to compare Machine Learning (ML) and Knowledge Discovery in Data (KDD, also often called Data Mining, DM) insisting on how much they actually differ. In order to make my ideas somewhat easier to understand, and as an illustration, I will include a description of several research topics that I find relevant to KDD and to KDD only. The second goal is to show that the definition I give of KDD can be almost directly applied to text analysis, and that will lead us to a very restrictive definition of Knowledge Discovery in Texts (KDT). I will provide a compelling example of a real-life set of rules obtained by what I call KDT techniques.

Objectives To better understand the causes of racial disparities in health care, we reviewed and synthesized existing evidence related to disparities in the “equal access” Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. Methods We systematically reviewed and synthesized evidence from studies comparing health care utilization and quality by race within the VA. Results Racial disparities in the VA exist across a wide range of clinical areas and service types. Disparities appear most prevalent for medication adherence and surgery and other invasive procedures, processes that are likely to be affected by the quantity and quality of patient–provider communication, shared decision making, and patient participation. Studies indicate a variety of likely root causes of disparities including: racial differences in patients’ medical knowledge and information sources, trust and skepticism, levels of participation in health care interactions and decisions, and social support and resources; clinician judgment/bias; the racial/cultural milieu of health care settings; and differences in the quality of care at facilities attended by different racial groups. Conclusions Existing evidence from the VA indicates several promising targets for interventions to reduce racial disparities in the quality of health care.

Abstract. The high cost of data consolidation is the key market inhibitor to the adoption of traditional information integration and data warehousing solutions. In this paper, we outline a next-generation integrated database management system that takes traditional information integration, content management, and data warehouse techniques to the next level: the system will be able to integrate a very large number of information sources and automatically construct a global business view in terms of “Universal Business Objects”. We describe techniques for discovering, unifying, and aggregating data from a large number of disparate data sources. Enabling technologies for our solution are XML, web services, caching, messaging, and portals for real-time dashboarding and reporting. 1
