There are few data on the practice of evidence based medicine in the developing world, nor on the actual sources of evidence that clinicians use in practice. To test the hypothesis that there was variation between and within developing countries in the proposed management of a patient with hospital acquired pneumonia, and that part of the variation can be explained by the sources of evidence used. Questionnaire responses to hypothetical case history. Investigators from 6 centres within the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) in China, Thailand, India, Egypt, and Kenya. Doctors chosen to represent primary and secondary hospital practice in the regions of the study centres. Investigations and initial treatments which would be ordered for a hypothetical 60-year-old woman who develops pneumonia 5 days after hospital admission, whether local data on antibiotic sensitivities are available and where information would be obtained to guide management. Chest x-ray and sputum gram stain/culture were consistently the most commonly ordered investigations, there being much greater variation in the initial treatment choices with either penicillin, a third-generation cephalosporin or aminoglycoside being the most popular choice. Textbooks were the commonest form of information source, and access to a library, textbooks and journals were statistically significantly associated with appropriate choice of investigations, but not treatment. Access to local antibiotic sensitivities was associated with appropriate initial treatment choice. Improving access to information in the literature and to local data may increase the practice of evidence-based medicine in the developing world.

Universities and colleges have started focusing on how to encourage their faculty member to write and publish research papers in all different sectors. This study highlights the challenges that faculty members face and which hinder them from conducting scientific research papers at one promising educational college in the region, Bahrain Teachers College, University of Bahrain. The data collected using a questionnaire that was sent to all faculty members across different academic divisions. The sample consisted of 28 faculty members of different academic ranks. The results showed that faculty members have the competence to do and publish research. However, they indicated that they need more time which, they believe, can be gained through reducing the teaching load.

In July 1994, Sprint shut down their Hispanic marketing division in San Francisco, La Conexion Familiar, just one week before workers there were scheduled to vote in an NLRB election for representation by CWA. While the case slowly made its way through the NLRB process, the Mexican Telephone Workers Union, on behalf of CWA, filed a complaint under the NAFTA labor side agreement, charging that Sprint's actions violated the rights of their employees to organize under U.S. labor law.

Objective To explore bibliometric markers in a worldwide sample of emergency physician investigators to define global, continental and individual patterns over time. Methods We evaluated the number of papers published, citations received, cumulative impact factor and h-index of editorial board members of six international emergency medicine journals. We calculated the individual values for every year of each author's career to evaluate their dynamic evolution. We analysed the results by researcher world area and growth rate. Results We included 107 researchers (76 American, 21 European and 10 Australasian; 46 slow-rate-group C-, 43 medium-rate-group Band 18 fast-rate growth-group A-). The median experience was 18 (IQR: 12) years, without subgroups differences. Dynamic analysis over time showed good fit with quadratic function in all individual researchers and for all bibliometric markers (R 2 : 0.505-0.997), with the h-index achieving the best R 2. The combined analysis of the h-index of the 107 investigators also fit the quadratic model (R 2 =0.49). Analysis by predefined continental and growth-rate subgroups allowed defining specific patterns (R 2 between 0.46-0.54 and 0.80-0.86, respectively): by continents, American researchers' h-index increased 0.632 points per year, European 0.417 and Australasian 0.341; by growth rate, researchers from group A, B and C increased 1.239, 0.683 and 0.320, respectively. Conclusions Dynamic analysis of every individual author indicator over time has a very good fit with a quadratic model, with the h-index achieving the best R 2. It is also possible to construct models based on continent and rate of growth that could help to predict future expected outcomes of researchers in a particular subgroup and to classify new emerging researchers by growth rate.

The book describes the events in the 100 years after the fall of the meteorite near the Avče village in the Soča Valley.
The expert monograph on the first Slovene meteorite acquaints us with meteorites in general and specifically with the fall of the iron-nickel meteorite near the Avče village in the Soča Valley (western Slovenia) on March 31st 1908, and its subsequent history until 2008.
The Avče meteorite was almost completely forgotten in Slovenia until 2007. The authors nevertheless succeeded in gathering in a relatively short time a surprisingly rich collection of texts and illustrations.
This meteorite was mentioned in only three Slovene publications in the 100 years since its fall in 1908: in a textbook by Leopold Poljanec a professor in Maribor (Mineralogy and Geology, Celovec 1909), in an article by Rajko Pavlovec On the meteorites in our country (Življenje in tehnika 12, 1962, p. 392) and in an article by Milan Ilić entitled Thousand pieces fallen from the space (Delo 43, 2001, no. 134, p. 12).
Especially valuable are the numerous newspaper notices from April 1908, completely unknown until now, and the testimonies of the locals.
Thanks to the testimony of the grandson of the owner of the land parcel where the meteorite fell, the exact place of its fall is known, which is only a half hour walk from the village.
The wrong coordinates still appear in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, which mark a site near the Neblo village in Goriška Brda on the right bank of the Soča river as the place of the fall (http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php).
Both articles on the Avče meteorite, written in German by Friedrich Martin Berwerth, the director of the Mineralogical-Petrographic Department of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, and published in 1908 (Über den Niederfall eines Eisenmeteoriten bei Avče im Isonzotale) and in 1909 (Ein österreichisches Meteoreisen), are reproduced and translated into Slovene, as is the chapter in V. F. Buchwald's Handbook of iron meteorites (1975: Avče, Slovenia, Yugoslavia).
The bibliography shows that in the long period from 1908 to 2007, the Avče meteorite was mentioned or presented in 28 bibliographic units, published almost entirely outside Slovenia, and in the years 2007 and 2008 it was mentioned in 24 bibliographic units, published almost entirely in Slovenia.

The objectives of this study were to describe the global profile of biomedical research productivity and to examine any improvement seen in it in the developing world during the period 1990-2000. Biomedical research articles published during 1990-2000 were accessed through the Medline database. The number of (journal) articles originating from each of the countries of the world, normalized to number of publications per million population (PPMP) per year, was elicited. In addition, the time trends of the number of publications in terms of each of the countries, continents, and economic groups were investigated. In terms of continents, North America had the highest number of biomedical PPMP per year (341.33); this was followed by Australia and Oceania (288.35), Europe (136.88), Asia (12.81), South America and Caribbean region (10.80), and Africa (3.50). In total, 52.7% of the countries showed a positive trend over time: 23.3% in South America, 28.9% in Africa, 40.0% in Australia and Oceania, 61.0% in Asia, 84.6% in Europe, and 100% in North America. All the continents except Africa showed a significantly positive trend. The share of the total number of publications went down for Africa (from 1.2 to 0.8%) and up slightly for Asia (from 14.3 to 15.6%) and South America (from 1.3 to 1.8%) during 2000 compared with 1990. The better the economic ranking of a country, the higher the number of biomedical PPMP. The total share of publications coming from low-income countries also fell, from 2% in 1990 to 1.7% in 2000. The imbalance between developed and developing countries in terms of biomedical research is significant. Pragmatic policies should be adopted by the World Bank, World Health Organization, other United Nations bodies, and respective governments to encourage biomedical research in the less-developed parts of the world.

Publications about monuments to fighters and victims of the Second World War in Yugoslavia began to appear in the late 1950s. They were dedicated to one or more monuments or memorial complexes. Over time, in tourist guides, among other sites, monuments and memorials began to be presented as a significant place worth a visit. During the second half of the 1970s, printing of special tourist guides dedicated only to monuments and memorial complexes started. Because of the popularity of monuments, a sticker album was also printed. The intention behind printing such publications was to inform citizens about monuments, but there was also an ideological side to it. Through books about monuments, the state and the Communist party wanted to emphasize again Yugoslav war efforts and the sacrifice that was made during the war. They used it as a propaganda tool in youth education, foreign diplomacy and overall state propaganda about the role of Yugoslav partisans, under the leadership of the Communist party, in the victory against fascism.

Systematic reviews are generally regarded by professionals in the field of evidence-based medicine as the highest level of medical evidence, and they are already standard practice for clinical studies. However, they are not yet widely used nor undertaken in the field of animal experimentation, even though there is a lot to be gained from the process. Therefore, a gold standard publication checklist (GSPC) for animal studies is presented in this paper. The items on the checklist have been selected on the basis of a literature analysis and the resulting scientific evidence that these factors are decisive in determining the outcome of animal studies. In order to make future systematic reviews and meta-analyses of animal studies possible, to allow others to replicate and build on work previously published, diminish the number of animals needed in animal experimentation (reduction), improve animal welfare (refinement) and, above all, improve the quality of scientific papers on animal exp...

Counterfeit banknote is an imitation currency produced without the legal sanction of the state or government. This paper is focusing on how to classify the detection technique of counterfeit banknotes. The approach that will be implemented to solve this problem is by using the method of Artificial Neutral Network. In this research, the author prefers to use back-propagation training in Artificial Neural network. The instrumentation used, is the MATLAB's GUI application that will be designed and developed to examine and identify the authentication of banknotes. The sample data was provided by the Center of Machine Learning and Intelligent System database. In the process to get the result, the author decides to classify this sample of banknotes data into training, testing and validation.

Social networks are particularly significant in marketing and advertising because they provide platforms that offer interactive network channels to develop consumer brands. Among the most useful platforms of this type for capturing leads for businesses of the business to customer are Facebook®. In this sense, this research aims to analyze the degree of influence and relationship between Branded Content and the social media consumer interactions of the luxury fashion firm Manolo Blahnik in the mentioned network. This analysis allows us to see what type of content is more effective in social networks. To do this, an exploratory study was implemented with a review of the literature, followed by a correlation study, with hypothesis set to be contrasted through ANOVA analysis with SPSS software. The conclusion is that social networks facilitate interaction between brands and their followers, allowing the content and messages disseminated to achieve greater impact and commitment to the pu...

Although English is the dominant language of scholarly publication, many multilingual scholars continue to publish in other languages while they also publish in English. A large body of research documents how these multilingual scholars negotiate writing in English for publication. We know less, however, about the implications of such negotiations for other languages that scholars work in. We wanted to investigate trends in writing conventions in language other than English during a period when multilingual publication patterns have been common. Specifically, we examined changes in rhetorical patterns in the introduction sections of the 1994 and the 2014 volumes of three Norwegian-language journals in three different disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Our findings show that while certain features of our material might be interpreted as the result of a non-English discourse community adopting dominant Anglo-American models, the overall picture is more complex. Our stu...

The popular media's influence on social norms with respect to people's appearance is likely to have played a part in the recent growth of cosmetic dentistry. This study was designed to investigate the manner in which the popular media have affected the perception and delivery of aesthetic dentistry in New Zealand. A nationwide survey was posted to a random sample of 600 general dental practitioners (GDPs) requesting sociodemographic details and information on the types of aesthetic dental procedures provided and the demand for those. Information was also sought on GDPs' awareness of television programmes and reality "makeover" television shows (such as "Extreme Makeover") covering issues related to aesthetic dentistry, together with the impact of such programmes (and that of different print media) on their patients' perceptions of, and demand for, aesthetic dentistry. The response rate was 81.2 percent. A majority of participants perceived an incr...

The accident at the Chernobyl NPP in 1986 was the most severe in the history of the nuclear industry, causing a huge release of radionuclides over large areas of Europe. The recently completed Chernobyl Forum concluded that after a number of years, along with reduction of radiation levels and accumulation of humanitarian consequences, severe social and economic depression of the affected regions and associated psychological problems of the general public and the workers had become the most significant problem to be addressed by the authorities. The majority of the affected land is now safe for life and economic activities. However, in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and in some limited areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine some restrictions on land-use should be retained for decades to come. Most of the 600,000 emergency and recovery operation workers and five million residents of the contaminated areas in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine received relatively minor radiation doses which are comparable with the natural background levels. Apart from the dramatic increase in thyroid cancer incidence among those exposed at a young age and some increase of leukaemia and solid cancer in most exposed workers, there is no clearly demonstrated increase in the somatic diseases due to radiation.

Several lines of evidence indicate that the hydrotherapy could rehabilitate the disc herniation. Relatively limited number of studies describe the effects of hydrotherapy exercises on rehabilitate the lumbar disc herniation in females. The purpose of these studies was to determine the interrelation between the hydrotherapy exercise programs and rehabilitate the mild-moderate lumbar disc herniation on female patients. We examined the hydrotherapy exercise program and crawl style swimming training on some study variables of the volunteers, they were divided equally into two groups: experimental group (n= 7 females; aged 54.857 ± 3.848) control group (n= 7 females; aged 54.143 ± 3.848). To evaluate the effect of both programs on our subjects we measured each of Abdominal Fat by fat caliper, Forward Range of Motion and Backward Range of Motion by the protractor, the Back Muscles Strength by the Dynamometer, Pain Intensity with visual analogue scale (VAS) and Daily Activity by SF-12. The results were by comparing the pre and posttests of each group, and comparing differences between the posttests for the control and experimental groups. Participants of this study were a mild-moderate lumbar disc herniation female patients. The results of the Crawl Style Swimming Training was there is a statistically significant differences at the level of (p< 0.05) between the pre and posttests of the control group in favor of posttests. And results the Hydrotherapy Exercise Program was there is a statistically significant differences at the level of (p< 0.05) between the pre and posttests of the experimental group in favor of posttests. And there is a differences between the posttests averages for the control and experimental groups in favor of the experimental group. We demonstrated that the hydrotherapy exercise program rehabilitate the mild-moderate lumbar disc herniation in female patients.

Salami publication or segmented publication is a distinct form of redundant publication which is usually characterized by similarity of hypothesis, methodology or results but not text similarity. These aspects of publications are not objectively detected by software applications and therefore present a serious threat to publication ethics. This article presents a practical approach for dealing with manuscripts suspected of salami publication during the submission process and after article publication in Biochemia Medica.

Intellectual property rights are the exclusive rights granted to individuals over the creations of their minds by the country to use his or her creations for a limited period of time. The types of intellectual property rights are Patents, Copyright, Trademark, Industrial designs and Geographical indications. A patent is a grant of right by the government for an invention to the inventor in exchange of full disclosure of the invention. A patent is a legal right that allows applicants and assignees to use and exploit their inventions for a period of 20 years from the date of filing of application. For the duration of the set period, the patent holder has the legal right to prevent others from commercially exploiting/using his/her invention and if anybody found doing so he can take legal actions against that person/company/organization. Patent provides many benefits to the inventor/researcher but why Indian researchers prefer publications instead of patenting their work. In this review article we were tried to find out the reasons behind it. Lot of reasons came to front after the study like totally online procedure of application, long waiting time, application and other fee, answering within time frame, command in English language, drafting expertise etc. And on the other hand publications need less labor, expense and time. Although many problems are there in patenting but if the work is authentic, genuine and novel, the inventor should go for patenting, so that he/she can use it commercially. Commercial use will not only benefit the researcher but it increases the Gross domestic production of the country. It is also duty of the every researcher to help in country's development.

Qualitative meta-synthesis: a question of dialoguing with texts Aims. This paper discusses whether useful synthesis of research reports across different qualitative methodologies is possible, and whether qualitative meta-synthesis violates the tenets of the interpretive paradigm. Background. Qualitative meta-synthesis is a recent development in qualitative inquiry that offers a means of enhancing the contribution of qualitative findings to the development of more formalized knowledge. However, there are a number of unanswered questions and areas that require debate. Discussion. A brief overview of qualitative meta-synthesis as a method of inquiry is presented. The assumptions of phenomenology, ethnography and grounded theory are explored for their amenability to meta-synthesis and the possibility of coherent synthesis of findings across these methodologies. In addition, a summary of major philosophical commitments common to the interpretive paradigm is presented. Qualitative meta-synthesis as a methodology is then explored for its fit within this paradigm. An argument is made, with some caveats, for synthesis across qualitative methodologies. Gadamer's concepts of the hermeneutic circle, the fusion of horizons, and dialogue with the text are explored for the insight they provide into the place of qualitative meta-synthesis in inquiry. Conclusion. It is important for researchers to bring hermeneutic skill to the process of meta-synthesis in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the various philosophical assumptions in which qualitative approaches are based. The particular challenge of combining analysis and interpretation from studies with markedly different approaches and intentions may prompt synthesists to create new and innovative approaches to the presentation of meta-synthesis.

This article summarizes the major categories of ethical violations encountered during submission, review, and publication of scientific articles. We discuss data fabrication and falsification, plagiarism, redundant and duplicate publication, conflict of interest, authorship, animal and human welfare, and reviewer responsibility. In each section, pertinent historical background and citation of relevant regulations and statutes are provided. Furthermore, a specific case(s) derived from actual situations is(are) presented. These cases were chosen to highlight the complexities that investigators and journals must face when dealing with ethical issues. A series of discussion questions follow each case. It is our hope that by increasing education and awareness of ethical matters relevant to scientific investigation and publication, deviations from appropriate conduct will be reduced.

Students are forced to adapt to the new learning modes, modular and online classes, of the new normal due to the Pandemic. It is evident that everyone has different motivational levels and capabilities that affect their academic performance and it also depends on the type of learning mode they are dealing with. The results of this study helped determine and understand the motivational levels of senior high students in the new normal. With the use of an online survey questionnaire prepared by the researchers, the students who were chosen to be research respondents were asked to answer carefully and honestly according to their respective experiences with their learning modes. The researchers assessed the experiences of students in both learning modes and how they cope up with the situation by investigating which factors affected their motivation and its causes, and how the low/high motivation levels affect the student's academic performance. Results yield that students who are in modular classes tend to lose motivation easily compared to online classes as it is difficult because they don’t meet with teachers to help and guide them in answering the modules, instead they learn on their own. It’s not only classes that affect the students but also other factors such as the internet speed and resources that they need to have so that they can listen efficiently in class. Research is important for tourism development in many countries. In Qatar, some tourism research has been published in scholarly journals. However, no studies have identified or examined the thematic, methodological, and authorship trends of Qatar tourism research. This study bridges this knowledge gap by reviewing tourism research on Qatar published in journals. Seven databases such as ScienceDirect, Hospitality and Tourism Complete, Emerald Insights, Scopus, ProQuest, Taylor & Francis Online, and Sage Journals Online were used to search and identify articles on Qatar tourism. Twenty-eight articles were identified for content analysis. The main results show that the dominant research themes/foci are sports tourism (35.7%), tourism planning and development (17.9%), and heritage (10.7%). From the methodological perspective, 68% of the data type was secondary. Furthermore, data analysis techniques, validity, trustworthiness, and research limitations were neglected by most authors. This paper also states the implications of these findings.

Research in social sciences is meant to change or improve human life. Indeed, due to the complexity of life today, research is one of the best tools for change, innovation, development, and progress. The Commission on Higher Education has recently been quite aggressive in promoting research production and dissemination in all Philippine tertiary institutions. In turn, educational leaders have put pressure on educators. While conducting research has significantly increased in speed in the past few years, the number is still highly limited for those whose research outputs make it into publication. Many researchers may have the passion for publishing but do not know exactly how to go about it. Some who have managed to complete their manuscripts have had them rejected by the editorial board. Everyone is trying to get hold of the secrets of the editors. This paper presents the synthesis of a study from systematic content analysis of academic journals from 10 leading research-based educational institutions and organizations. The goal of the study was mainly to investigate how these journals’ publications are aligned with the Millenium Developmental Goals. Findings reveal that there is a consistent trend in the areas where most publications abound, while other areas are left out. Additionally, practical steps to take in writing academic papers for publication are proposed for the purposes of meeting the real needs of people through research.

Graphic design faces the contradictions of commercial intent and social relevance. This study explores the contribution of criticism, in two independent, seminal graphic design magazines, towards shifting the dominant preferences of graphic design from a purely commercial pursuit to a human-centred practice. Emigre magazine (c.1984 - 2005) and Dot Dot Dot magazine (c.2000 - 2010) are recognised for their critical intent and within them are emerging critical issues that suggest a potential niche for graphic design beyond consumerism and commerce. In the discipline of graphic design, designers define what it is to be human (and thus equally the realities of dehumanisation) in very particular ways (Rose, 2001:135; Freire, 1993:43). Graphic design has a history of commercial practice. This commercial history continues to define its identity and reinforce a particular body of knowledge. Graphic design criticism, however, is an inventive voice that has the potential to contribute to change. Both Emigre and Dot Dot Dot were representative of a “constructive marginality” (Bennett, 1993:64), drawing from their own set of references and awareness of graphic design’s potential to inform their identities, instead of looking to established definitions of practice to do so. This analysis explores how they anticipated a modern conception of graphic design that has become part of a recently adopted (2015) and more widely embedded discourse. This discourse involves critical design that interrogates social and political agency, multiculturalism, interdisciplinarity, environmental sustainability and speculative futures. Graphic design engages social institutions and practices that denote social constructions of difference and inequality, and is never neutral. Any work, any representation of ideology, is at once individual and discursive at the level of social, cultural and political formations. The critical issues evident in Emigre and Dot Dot Dot, with the exception of an absence of speculative futures, anticipate a more humanising perspective in graphic design. They invite critique and the potential for change that is relevant to the surrounding world, as a counter to commercial self-interest.

If you glance at magazine stalls in north India today, about a dozen women's journals with titles like Sarita and Grha §obhj beckon to you with the pretty smiling faces of properly attired girls, 'carefully made up but unprovocative, a woman's view of a woman'. Inside are articles about marriage and family, beauty, health, fashion and films, and simple, fable-like stories in which goodness always winsin V. S. Naipaul's words: 'Instruction, instruction of the simplest sort'. 2 Looking at these journals today it is difficult to imagine that they were ever different. But they were: Hindi women's journals in the first half of this century were quite a different thing. They were at the forefront of debates and initiatives seeking to emancipate women from negative images and discriminatory practices, and radically to change women's lives. They, in turn, had grown out of the first nineteenth-century crop of journals aimed at 'reforming' women and the household. We can in fact distinguish three phases of women's journals: (a) a reformist phase in the nineteenth century, exemplified by Stri-bodh (1857) in Gujarati, by Bämäbodhini, Bamgamahila and Bharati in Bengali, by Bharatendu Harishcandra's Bä1äbodhini ( 1874) in Hindi, by Satihitabodhini (1883) and Telugu Zenänä (1893) in Telugu, etc. ; 3 ( b) a radicalcritical phase in the first half of the twentieth century, during which most journals became platforms for a wide-ranging and hard-hitting questioning of Indian society, of gender roles and spheres of activity, and also became vehicles of politicisation; (c) a third phase after Independence, when women's journals returned to domestic concerns. Some, largely localised, feminist magazines have appeared in the last few decades, but their circulation and their outlook are quite separate from the women's s journals one finds on newspaper stalls.
