This book chapter addresses the decision-making processes that international hotel corporations engage in during their expansion procedures, and focusses on the entry and presence of these corporations in Bulgaria. Our findings show that country- and firm-specific factors play little role in the presence of these organisations in the country. On the contrary, it appears that potential tokenism exists in the selection of Bulgaria as a host destination, with major hotel corporations each being represented by only one or two affiliated properties in the country. This raises the question as to whether these corporations enter Bulgaria in search of expansion opportunities and to offer a greater choice of destinations for their customers, or because they are pursuing their own globalization agenda for achieving wide geographic presence regardless of the destinations entered. This chapter also shows that the chains and their partners have a strong preference for non-equity entry modes (fra...

The issue of Bulgarians and the Bulgarian States has an important place in terms of General Turkish History. Because these ancient people lived religion and politics intertwined. On the one hand, while accepting Islam in the official sense, while experiencing the distinction of being the first Turkish State on the other, they were able to adopt Christianity and become slavicized.
In this respect, if we want to understand the peoples of today's Balkan region correctly, we should start by knowing the Bulgarians. Because the Bulgarians have become our western side in terms of both present and past Turkish history. In our study, we will try to understand how close the Bulgarians are to us and why they are so far away.

During the last few years in Bulgaria, as well as in other parts of the world, we are witnessing a proliferation of social movements. As far as the current global crisis is defined as predominantly economic and financial crisis, it puts to question neoliberalism as the doctrine with a minimalist vision of the state intervention and deregulation of public goods. What can be seen in social movements around the world, as well as in Bulgaria, are the demands for stronger state with citizen participation and restricted influence of privileged (financial) lobbies on political decisionmaking. The article presents data collected through indepth interviews and anthropological observation of protest mobilizations in Bulgaria, analysed with the methodology of grounded theory, to form three core categories: representative democracy and political parties, participation, deliberation. The data show a strong preference for forms of citizen control and a return to established forms of representative democracy in a fraction of the protesters by the end of the studied period.

One of the most evident consequences of eutrophication of waters is the progressive spreading of persistent cyanobacterial blooms. They are often accompanied by the production of cyanotoxins in concentrations, which are hazardous for human health. In this research, we analysed phytoplankton communities in four lowland water bodies, for the presence of cyanobacterial blooms and toxin production. The cyanobacterial biovolumes we found, determine three of the lowland water bodies: Onogur Reservoir (OR), Asparuhov Val Reservoir (AVR), and Srebarna Lake (SL) as "Alert Level 1" of potentially hazardous levels of cyanotoxins. Cyanobacterial biovolume exceeds the threshold value of 8 mm 3 L-1 (recreational waters) in AVR and SL at the end of the summer period. In OR, we registered sustainable bloom of Microcystis spp. during the whole summer season, and extremely high average seasonal value of the total biovolume (146.5 mm 3 L-1). Microcystins were reported in all four analysed water bodies, with the highest concentration in OR (6 µg L-1). Cylindrospermopsin was detected in AVR and OR, while saxitoxins were in AVR and SL. The concentrations of cyanotoxins do not exceed the guideline values in recreational waters. However, the increased biovolumes of cyanobacteria are a signal that in three of the analysed water bodies, monitoring is recommended at the levels of cyanotoxins during the summer period.

Method: A group of psychiatrists from the region evaluated the status of psychiatry at the end of 2004 based on data from their countries and information available on WHO homepages. Results: There is a shift from traditional in-patient facilities towards outpatient and community services as evidenced by a decreasing number of hospital beds. Economic pressures affect the financing of psychiatric services, and reimbursement for novel psychotropics. Political changes were followed by updated legislation. Psychiatric training, pre-, postgraduate and continuous medical education, are gradually being transformed. Scientific output as measured by publications in peer-reviewed journals has been significantly lower than in the West. Conclusion: The major changes in the period of transition documented in the review pose new challenges for psychiatry.

Two types of soils (Eutric Fluvisol and Chromic Luvisol) and two crops (wheat and cabbage) were investigated for determination of the transfer of 137 Cs from soil to plant. Measurements were performed using gamma-spectrometry. Results for the soil characteristics, transfer factors of the radionuclides (TF), and conversion factors (CF) (cabbage/wheat) were obtained. The transfer of 137 Cs was higher for Chromic Luvisol for both the plants. Statistically significant dependence of TF of 137 Cs on its concentration in soil was established for cabbage. Dependence between K content in the soil and the transfer factor of 137 Cs was not found due to the high concentrations of available K. Use of bioconcentration factor (BCF) (ratio between the activity concentration of a radionuclide in a reference plant to its concentration in another plant) is demonstrated and proposed for risk assessment studies.

Malassezia furfur was the first species described within the cosmopolitan yeast genus Malassezia, which now comprises 13 species. Reported isolation rates of these species from healthy and diseased human skin show geographic variations. PCR-fingerprinting with the wild-type phage M13 primer (5 0 -GAGGGTGGCGGTTCT-3 0 ) was applied to investigate phylogeographic associations of M. furfur strains isolated from Scandinavians residing permanently in Greece, in comparison to clinical isolates from Greek, Bulgarian and Chinese native residents. Seven M. furfur strains from Scandinavians were compared with the Neotype strain (CBS1878), CBS global collection strains (n ¼ 10) and clinical isolates from Greece (n ¼ 4), Bulgaria (n ¼ 15) and China (n ¼ 6). Scandinavian, Greek and Bulgarian M. furfur strains mostly formed distinct group clusters, providing initial evidence for an association with the host's geographical origin and with the underlying skin condition. These initial data address the hypothesis that M. furfur could be a eukaryotic candidate eligible for phylogeographic studies.

This article analyzes the speeches prepared by John Paul II for the annual visits of Bulgarian delegations on the occasion of celebrations of the Saints Cyril and Methodius (around May 24 th). The fourteen texts prepared for these visits together with his speeches during the Pope's Apostolic Journey to Bulgaria in 2002 and during the presentations of letters of credence for Bulgarian Ambassadors to the Holy See present a very interesting and understudied material for a better analysis of the Pope's Slavic, ecumenical and European ideas. The Pope sees this tradition as a continuation of politics of John XXIII and Paul VI.

! Balkans as being an ever --changing part of the world in both poli7cal and social means, witnessed many dras7c changes during the 20 th century whose effects are s7ll evident and causing widespread changes again in both social and economical structure of the region. Balkans witnessed rise and fall of the empires, great catastrophes, dilemmas, hatred and noble acts throughout history, but 20 th century earned its importance among the other moments in history.

Dilian Georgiev found topotypes of Viviparus sphaeridius Bourguignat, 1880, which has not been mentioned in the West European literature since its original description, except one citation by Westerlund . The rediscovery of this species is provided. As a result, V. sphaeridius is considered to represent a species in its own rights well distinguishable from the other European species in the genus Viviparus. Additionally, a key to the Viviparus species from Europe is given to facilitate future identification and prevent further misidentifications.

Geronticus balcanicus was known only by the type material (carpometacarpus sin. prox.). New, unknown up to now skeletal element, a fragment of carpometacarpus dex., representing a complete os metacarpalis majus was found in 1994. It comes from the type locality and adds more data both on the morphological and the osteometrical characterization of this fossil species. The dating of the site is determined more precisely as MNQ zone 18a according to the associated mammalian fauna.

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a frequent event in different types of cancer. In several studies MSI was shown to have both clinical and prognostic value. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of MSI in Bulgarian patients with endometrial cancer (EC) and the possible relation of this phenomenon to their clinicopathological characteristics. A total of 33 histologically confirmed EC patients were analyzed for tumor MSI using a panel of 6 microsatellite markers. We identified MSI in 30% of endometrial cancer cases. Six of them had high degree of MSI (MSI-H), and 4 displayed low degree of MSI (MSI-L). The frequency of MSI in Bulgarian EC patients does not differ significantly from that reported in other European studies.

Collective traumas are distressing or disturbing
experiences that affect large numbers of people. Such
traumas can be difficult to heal because they tear
at the social fabric, disorienting individuals, and
spawning personality traits that make it difficult for
individuals to connect. Yet, in a small village in the
hills of Bulgaria, participants in a festival called
Goat Milk wove their traumatic memories together into
a nest designed to regrow social tissues.

The pressures that started with the name changes of Turkish villages in the 1930s began to rise even further with the “one nation” decision of the communist regime in 1956. By the year 1984, the Turks whose names were changed perforce due to the assimilation policy in Bulgaria and whose languages were banned started a resistance campaign, which was widely supported by the Turks in the resistance zone.

The transplantation program in Bulgaria started in 1968 with renal transplantations to a child and adult woman. In 1986 the first heart transplantation was performed. To date a total of 10 heart transplants have been performed, including one combined heart/lung. A liver transplantation program was launched in 2005 with a total number of 16 transplantations-7 from living donors and 9 from deceased donors. The highest transplantation activity is registered in the field of renal transplantation. During the period 1980-2006, 462 Bulgarian recipients of kidney were transplanted in Bulgaria. The ratio between transplantations from deceased and living related donors is approximately 1:0.9. Annual transplantation activity varies among the years from 1 to 12 renal transplantations p.m.p./per year. The 1-(80.7% vs. 63.1%), 5-(57.86% vs. 39.0%) and 10-year (42.65% vs. 23.62%) graft survival rates are higher for recipients of living donor kidneys compared to those of deceased donor. In 1983 a

The chances for fiscal and monetary influence on the business cycle of Bulgaria under a currency board arrangement have been analyzed. The determinants of Bulgaria’s business cycle phase and output gap from the first quarter of 2000 till the second quarter of 2017 have been identified. The effects of minimum reserve requirements, fiscal balance, government revenue, government expenditure and government debt on the business cycle phase and the output gap have been studied. Two research methods have been employed – logistic regression and ordinary least squares regression of times series data. The study results imply that all mentioned variables except for government debt have a statistically significant impact on the output gap. The business cycle phase is significantly affected by all mentioned variables with the exception of government expenditure.
