ABSTRACT The automotive domain is currently moving towards automated driver assistance applications, like automatic evasive maneuvers to avoid accidents, and even beyond assistance towards automated driving. However, in the near future these systems will only be active under certain conditions, thus still requiring manual control in other conditions. This means that there will be ‘transitions of control’: from the driver to the automated system and vice versa. Then research questions like ‘how should the system take over’, ‘how can the driver take back control’, and ‘can the driver be regarded as a backup if the system fails’, etc. arise. This paper addresses the effects of various parameters in handing back the control to the driver. This is done for TNO’s virtual tow bar system, which is an automated driving system that controls both the longitudinal and lateral vehicle motion at very close following for economic driving. This paper presents results of a driving simulator experiment executed with the aim to evaluate different parameters settings in switching the tow bar system on and off. Due to the short following distances and safety implications of this, there is be a procedure for hooking on / off of the tow bar system. Special attention is paid to driver behavior just after getting back control following a period of automated driving.

Self-control is a central human capacity associated with a wide range of personal and societal advantages. In view of its benefits, increasing self-control among children and adults has been advocated as a remedy to many of society’s illnesses. This approach is evident in the popular media, as well as in educating and governing agencies, and has subsequently taken root in the general public. The present article advocates a broader approach by noting some of the downsides of the pursuit of high self-control. It does so by highlighting often-ignored issues relating to (a) uncertainties about the nature of self-control, (b) nuances concerning the benefits of high self-control, and (c) undesirable implications of wanting more self-control. The conclusion is that research on self-control should deal not only with the benefits of self-control but also with the costs associated with advocating, wanting, and even having high self-control. This approach would provide society with informed knowledge about potential side effects of one of the most powerful psychological solutions to its ailments.

Abstract : The initial objective of this research program was to investigate new ways of interactive communication between the human and the computer. In highly specialized and demanding environments such as computer aided design, computer aided manufacturing, information processing or battle management, an integrated workstation using other than the conventional keyboard, mouse or touch displays may be necessary. Specifically we propose to investigate the use of brain waves (electroencephalogram- EEG) to control cursor movements, such that a desired command could be selected from a given menu. We call this interface, the 'EEG mouse'. The computer user brain waves will have to be transmitted (we propose through radio telemetry) and processed by the workstation. However, the user will control the computer function by selecting functions from a menu by pure thought. No other computer input would have to be activated. With the advances in digital signal processing of the brain waves in real-time would be easily implemented in an I/O subsystem built around one of DSP chips. Our conclusion is that the neural network shows potential to discriminate between YES and NO answers using signal evoked responses. Further tuning of the signal processing is required to increase the reliability of the technique. (kt)

Regardless the Smart City (SC) broad scope, which ranges from a service-oriented ecosystem with the use of almost all the emerging technologies to a resilient urban environment, practice shows that the SC is mostly capitalized for utility upgrades, urban renovation, and real-time city monitoring. Moreover, recent city implementations register attempts to utilize technology for controlling the entire city flows. The aim of this communication paper is to discuss the SC hubness and more specifically the fact that the SC can become a “hub” that collects, processes, and transmits data; brings together people to co-design and evolve; and controls service, material and people flows in all city types. As a result, this paper defines the role, the uses and the architecture of this “SC-as-a-Hub” operation labeled “SCHub”, which can standardize and control all the city flows.

Research shows that parental mediation is essential for the introduction of minors into the digital environment and their development therein as well as to reduce their exposure to online risks. The present study examines parental strategies depending on whether minors are (dis)connected to the Internet and whether they differ according to their age. The motivations for minors to connect are also examined in relation to the frequency to which they connect to the Internet (activities related to school or learning, interacting with friends, and being entertained). The sample consists of 776 Spanish families with minors aged 5–17. Results show that parental mediation depends on the age of the minor, parental mediation strategies are more restrictive when minors are younger, and as their age increases strategies become more dialogue and collaboration oriented. In adolescence, parents mainly control internet purchases, yet they become more flexible with minors’ presence on social network...

Desire is part of human nature, and being vulnerable to desire is part of what differentiates humans from machines. However, individuals with high self-control—who demonstrate impressive resistance to their desires—may appear to lack such human vulnerability. We propose that people perceived as high in self-control tend to be dehumanized as more robotic, relating to potentially negative social consequences. Across 6 studies (N = 2,007), people perceived those higher in self-control as more robotic. Additionally, we found some evidence that this robotic-dehumanization was related to less interest in spending time with the high self-control person. This outcome was reliably linked to lower warmth perceptions which correlated with greater robotic-dehumanization. Together, our results offer new insights into the social dynamics of exhibiting high self-control.

Electrohydraulic flow control valve is an essential element of an automated process industry where fluid control is applicable. The use of conventional controllers overan IP-communication network for controlling electrohydraulic flow control positioner to regulate mainline pressure and flow rate in pipeline transportation of petroleum products between two stations where downstream pressure of the pumping station fluctuates significantlyposes a problem of instability on the flowrate and the mainline pressure of the pipeline. Additionally, the effect of network induced, time-varying delay between the controller and the electrohydraulic flow control valves induces a problem of poor quality of control and inefficient system performance of the control loop. In this paper, we presented an application of neural network in processflow control using an electrohydraulic valve positionerand proposed a concept of collaborative network for networked control systems over IP-based networks.

One important instrument to be used in the control system design is strategic behaviors that can lead to the expected organization performance. Referring to the extended definition of strategic behavior using stakeholder-based strategic behavior, corporate social performance is kind of strategic behavior to be influenced by using control system. This paper discusses how control system, using Simons‟ levers of control can play important role in increasing the corporate social performance. The interaction between control system, including belief system, boundary system, diagnostic control system, and interactive control system, as well as the corporate financial performance (CFP) can affect the corporate social performance (CSP) due to fact that increase in CFP resulting from the appropriate use of control system components enables the company has more chance to do the CSP. The levers of control are deemed to form an integral part of employee socialization and support the development...

In-flight failure scenarios often involve flight control law switching that can potentially result in adverse aircraft-pilot-coupling or unwanted airframe loads. The experimental setup and results from an investigation focusing on the effects of control law switching on pilot manual control dynamics using desktop based pilot-in-the-loop simulation are presented in this paper. Pilots were presented with tasks requiring them to compensate for disturbances in aircraft longitudinal dynamics due to medium and severe turbulence. Off-line parameter identification was then used to derive pilot model parameters from simulation data and thus, infer changes in manual control characteristics due to switching between three control laws. This resulted in piecewise linear pilot models and quantified the inter-subject differences suitable for inclusion in the future design of robust flight control systems. Increased turbulence intensity was found to reduce inter-subject differences both in terms of pilot model parameters and the open-loop pilot-vehicle system crossover frequency.
