At the heart of James B. Torrance’s theological project was a concern to demonstrate the importance of an evangelical account of repentance, over against a legal account. This was a concern that he inherited from John Calvin, who stood as the greatest theological influence on Torrance. Out of his respect for Calvin, Torrance did not seek to commandeer Calvin’s work on this topic for his own project. Rather, he sought to communicate Calvin’s own vision of evangelical repentance to a new generation. Accordingly, this essay will primarily devote itself to exploring Calvin’s position. Before so doing, however, I shall provide a brief analysis of the distinction between the “covenant God” and “contract God,” which underlays Torrance’s emphasis on Calvin’s distinction between legal and evangelical repentance. Also, following our exploration of Calvin, I shall look briefly at Torrance’s own account of evangelical repentance, as it followed Calvin’s trajectory.

Ignatius of Loyola's convalescence is well-known as providing the occasion of his spiritual conversion. Inspired by two great religious texts, he decided to embark upon a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The interpretation of his decision to travel to the Holy Land, almost exclusively based on the Autobiography, tends to focus on his spiritual movements and his appropriation of the religious and spiritual content of what he was reading. Such an interpretation, though not mistaken, leaves out important considerations from his context. This article seeks to recover aspects of that context. The broad historical horizon of his conversion shows Jerusalem as occupying a considerable place in the Spanish religious imagination. Specifically, this study will consider the messianic aspirations attached to King Ferdinand as well as the conquest of Oran spearheaded by Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros. The literature surrounding both suggests the deep imbrication between Spanish religious thought and the Holy Land. In short, a historical critical analysis of sermons, songs, poetry and chronicles connected to these two significant historical figures points to the great currency of the desire for Jerusalem in early sixteenth century Spanish society. That desire, unquestionably nuanced and diverse, appears as a sign of the times, and as such, it forms the background of Ignatius of Loyola's convalescence and conversion. This broad social and religious desire, though it does not explain Ignatius's choice to make a pilgrimage, makes his election to travel to the Holy Land to follow Christ eminently plausible. For as spiritual and affectively motivated as he was to follow Christ, Ignatius was not at the margin of his history. Nor can Ignatian historiography and spirituality remain at the margin of important historical considerations to understand that the soldier who became a pilgrim was realizing a recognizable Spanish desire: he was journeying to the Holy Land for Christ.

Lease-purchase of real estate is a new model of accommodation which is increasingly applied by housing companies in Sweden. The model is based on that the tenant gets the opportunity to either continue to rent or purchase his residence, within a fixed time period for a set option price (Sorling, 2009). This master thesis is a case study about an eventual introduction of lease- purchase which entails conversion from rental apartments to tenant-owned housing for a rental property in Gnesta, which is owned by the public housing company Gnestahem. The background of the case study is that Gnesta municipality wants to investigate the opportunities for future home ownership for households within the municipality with less economic means. Previous studies indicate that conversion of properties can increase social capital between the tenants in a housing area (Klingborg & Werner, 2011). The case study is based on a property valuation of the rental property after an intended pipe renovation with the completion set to year 2021. Three different scenarios with different inflation, yield and discount rates have been measured by using the discounted cash flow method. The options for purchasing the apartments has been compared with the tenants’ opportunities to save money for using as payment in cash for either 15 % or 25 % of the option value. The subscribed future mortgage is measured in relation to age and disposable income for the household. The shareholdership method has also been analysed as an alternative to lease-purchase and conversion.
The conclusion of the results is that an option-time of ten years is preferred since it can be applied upon introducing lease-purchase to give all tenants’ best opportunities to save money, as shown in the appendix 17-19. It is uncertain what amount the total housing costs will be after conversion of the property, since these are based on the economic situation of each household and the current conditions on the real estate market. The tenants can obtain profits in case their apartments are sold, since the tenant bought it at the rental value, not the actual market value.
The most crucial recommendation for future studies are implementation of an analysis about the demand for the tenants in the property regarding conversion. If lease-purchase should be introduced for the property, it is important that Gnestahem has knowledge of which households that can afford and have interest in purchasing their apartments. The information is crucial since it is required that at least 2/3 of the tenants’ desires to make such property conversion.

This collection of studies by social anthropologists describes the complex and often controversial processes of religious change occurring in the postsocialist world. By critically examining the influx of missionaries, the adoption of ‘new’ faiths, and the reactions to these unanticipated shifts in religious landscape, the authors offer valuable insight into the fate of state supported secularism as well as providing fresh critiques of anthropological studies of conversion.

Firstly, the Roman Catholic «prehistory» of contact between the Panoan groups of Bolivian Amazonia and Jesuit, Franciscan and lay clergy missionaries is described. The paper then analyses the continuity of the evangelization process by diverse evangelical denominations, describing three missionary experiences with the Chacobo since 1955 to the present day. Finally, general insights are proposed relating the anthropological problem of religious conversion.

Introduction to Messianic Judaism provides a description of what the Messianic Jewish community looks like today at its center and on its margins. The first section of the book traces the ecclesial contours of the community, providing a socio-historical and theological snapshot of the community's origins, where it is presently and where it is heading. Alongside these chapters, the book also includes a number of essays on biblical and theological issues central to the identity of Messianic Judaism. The twelve contributors to the first part of the book are recognized leaders in the Messianic Jewish community. They work with various organizations, including the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations, the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America, the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues, the Messianic Jewish Rabbinical Council, Tikkun International, Chosen People Ministries, Messianic Jewish Theological Institute, Israel College of the Bible and the New School for Jewish Studies. Fourteen scholars from a wide spectrum of Christian backgrounds have written essays for the second part of the book. Their participation signals a growing academic and ecclesial interest in Messianic Judaism. Since the 1970s, a sea change has taken place in New Testament studies that has far-reaching implications for how the church evaluates Messianic Judaism. A broad reassessment of the New Testament writers’ view of Judaism has occurred since the publication of E. P. Sanders’s seminal work Paul and Palestinian Judaism (1977), and this reevaluation continues unabated. The contributors to the second part of Introduction to Messianic Judaism draw from this recent scholarship and demonstrate how post-supersessionist interpretation of the New Testament results in readings of the biblical text that are consistent with Messianic Judaism. The final section of the book is written by Joel Willitts who provides a summary and synthesis of the essays, explaining how they shed light on the ecclesial context and biblical foundations of Messianic Judaism.

Building cultural centers in line with egalitarian ideals may have been part of the Turkish modernization project. However, their (re)construction has continued increasingly in the last 20 years. This chapter examines the role of such centers and the meanings attributed to them under the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government. In doing so it discusses the uses of culture under this government and makes an assessment of cultural policy during 15 years of AKP rule. Examples are chosen specifically from the converted cultural centers in Istanbul in order to show that rebuilding cultural centers is a political act. Each of these cases helps to identify the different aims (neoliberal pragmatism, centralization of state powers, and conservative Islam as an ideology) behind the AKP’s cultural policy-making.

This dissertation clarifies the anthropological concept of religion by crafting the most useful scientific definition. The first chapter illustrates the confusion surrounding this term, and argues that the comparative method of anthropology requires that this imprecision be removed. Reviewing the four types of definitions of religion extant in the literature -Content, Behavioral/Performative, Mental, and Functional -Chapter 1 concludes that the best definition will be a generative functional definition. The second chapter supports this conclusion by finding that an independent discipline, American constitutional law, has arrived at the same understanding. Chapter 3 details the nature of definitions and the method of their proper construction, and uses these insights to define of religion based upon its function to alleviate death anxiety. Chapter 4 examines whether an inverse relationship between religiousness and death anxiety actually pertains, while Chapter 5 argues that the disc...
