Approaches to the Analysis of Production Activity at Archaeological Sites presents the proceedings of an international and interdisciplinary workshop held in Berlin in 2018, which brought together scholars whose work focusses on manufacturing activities identified at archaeological sites. The various approaches presented here include new excavation techniques, ethnographic research, archaeometric approaches, GIS and experimental archaeology as well as theoretical issues associated with how researchers understand production in the past. These approaches are applied to research questions related to various technological and socio-economic aspects of production, including the organisation and setting of manufacturing activities, the access to and use of raw materials, firing structures and other production-related installations. The chapters discuss production activities in various domestic and institutional contexts throughout the ancient world, together with the production and use of tools and other items made of stone, bone, ceramics, glass and faience. Since manufacturing activities are encountered at archaeological sites on a regular basis, the wide range of materials and approaches presented in this volume provides a useful reference for scholars and students studying technologies and production activities in the past.

The archeological data of the first rescue excavation took place in 1993 allowed us to ascertain the habitation began at an early phase of the Iron Age and stopped around the mid-4th century BC or a little later.
The earliest strata produced handmade and wheel made pottery with Geometric decoration of the 8th century BC. Very interesting though, were the samples of the so-called "silverish" pottery, a ceramic group with Geometric decoration and exceptionally large storage vessel shapes, such as the pithos, the lekane and the hydria (figs.1-2).

Despite more than a century of excavation, little is known about certain aspects of daily life in ancient Israel and late antiquity, particularly with regard to domestic structures and the functioning of households. At a number of Roman and Byzantine period sites, archaeologists have excavated parts of the domestic quarters, but final publications of these excavations, where they exist, have focused primarily on monumental public structures, in particular synagogues and churches. In the 1980s, however, archaeologists opened up approximately 1500 square meters of domestic space at the Jewish village site of Qasrin in the Golan Heights, with the goal of investigating daily life in Byzantine Palestine. At this site, they reconstructed a single household unit located to the east of the synagogue, which they designated as House B, with a view to providing an academic and popular interpretation of a Byzantine house for presentation to the public.

A Late Romano-Egyptian House in the Dakhla Oasis: Amheida House B2 presents a material ethnography of the individuals who once lived in a late third to early fourth century house (B2) at Amheida (Roman Trimithis) in Egypt. In order to achieve a holistic understanding of daily life, the volume analyzes and synthesizes the architecture, artifacts, and ecofacts recovered from the excavations of Amheida House B2 (2005-2007). This type of analysis has never before been attempted in a full report on the excavation of a single Romano-Egyptian house. In so doing, this book develops a methodology and presents a case study of how the rich material remains of Romano-Egyptian houses may be used to investigate the relationship between domestic remains and social identity. The book is available in hardback, Kindle, and open-access online editions. The open-acces edition can be found here: http://dlib.nyu.edu/awdl/isaw/amheida-ii-house-b2/.

During the 2016 field season of the Petra North Ridge Project, excavators unexpectedly uncovered the remains of a small bath complex just beyond the city walls in an area that was thought to be dominated by non-elite settlement. The remains of the bath complex consist of rectangular room heated by a hypocaust and an adjacent circular room with a small drain in the centre of its floor. The architectural arrangement and construction of this bath as well as the phasing of its associated ceramics suggest that this complex dates to the first century A.D., making this bath a welcome addition to a small but growing corpus of Nabataean baths in and around Petra. The preservation of various elements of the bath, including its hypocaust, a recessed stone tub, and what seems to be an oculus of a domed ceiling, provide valuable clues that allow for a reconstruction of the structure and better understanding of these early Nabataean baths. This bath complex was part of a larger structure, possibly a residence, in which excavators also found evidence of wall paintings and a deposit of elite goods, including two marble sculptures. The presence of this elite complex in a location formerly interpreted as a habitation site of the nonelite necessitates a re-evaluation of the occupation of the Petra North Ridge.
