The research was carried out to examine the impact of health and safety policies on employees’ performance in the Ghana’s timber industry and a case study approach was adopted for the study. The main data collection instruments used were interviews and questionnaires as well as statistical tools such as Pearson correlation was adopted to assess the relationship between investment in health and safety and employees performance. The data collected with these instruments as well as the calculated r = 0.42 showed that health and safety measures put up by the company positively correlates with employees’ performance despite that the correlation is weak. There is also inverse relationship between reducing the number of accidents and injuries through health and safety promotions and employees performance. From the findings, it was concluded that organizations need to pay much attention to their health and safety measures since apart from the fact that in other jurisdictions it is backed by...

Students sit for most of the time on school furniture in the classroom. However, the design of school furniture in Nigeria using the anthropometric data of the users has yet to be given adequate attention. This study was carried out to obtain anthropometric data of students in higher institutions of learning in Nigeria for the design of ergonomics chairs and tables for use by students in those institutions. Seven hundred and twenty (720) students in three selected institutions participated in the study. Various body dimensions (sitting elbow height, shoulder height, knee height, popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length, stature and body weight) of the students were measured using standard anthropometer and 5th, 50th, and 95th percentiles of the data obtained were computed using a SPSS 16.0 statistical package. The existing furniture dimensions in the selected institutions were also measured. Based on the obtained anthropometric data, this paper proposes furniture design dimensions...

In maritime transportation traffic control is carried out by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS). VTS operators monitor traffic, provide information on request and coordinate movement of ships in emergency situations. Relevant for the performance of the VTS operator is the operator's mental representation of the traffic. Situation awareness (SA) is a useful concepts in describing this mental picture. The SA concept has been successfully introduced in maritime traffic control and several methods for assessing SA in the VTS context have been developed. This paper compares two methods for measuring VTS operator performance based on the SA concept: SATest, based on Endsley's SAGAT paradigm, and Performance Monitoring Instrument (PMI), a performance based assessment technique. Both methods have their strengths and weaknesses. Both can be used, depending on research question and confining conditions. The results of the comparison have implications for assessment of performance on traffi...

The qualimetry method will allow an objective assessment of the performance of metal-cutting machines and the production capacity of machinery, as well as an objective assessment of their use in multi-product manufacturing, applying the qualimetry approach and qualimetry indicators, which are based on the concept of qualification of metal removing during machine operations. The aim of the study is to develop methods for measuring the performance of metal-cutting machines and open the way to create a regulatory framework based on quantitative indicators of the equipment quality. Qualimetry measured volume of metal removing allows setting the maximum possible productivity (quali-power) of metal cutting machinery, based on a small number of basic quality indicators contained in the machinery data sheets. It is essential that the quali-power of the machinery is an objective indicator of its quality, independent of the specific conditions of its operation at any given time. Hence the pro...

Musculoskeletal disorders are often found in various types of work, including surgeons. Standing working position is immobile and rigid when performing surgical operations. The equipment used is less ergonomic which is the main parameter. The surgeon profession belongs to the category of the high-risk profession and has the potential to experience musculoskeletal disorders. Surgeons who suffer musculoskeletal disorders sense disease start from mild-to-severe due to the muscles receiving static loads frequently in the long-term. The emergence of musculoskeletal disorders can be caused by working environment conditions and standing position while working, causing injury to joints, vertebral discs, nerves, cartilage, tendons, and muscles. This paper describes in extensive the potential for reducing musculoskeletal problems with the use of a chairless chair for surgeons in carrying out operations. Musculoskeletal problems in surgery and the use of chairless chairs have been further expl...

According to traffic accident reports, many of the accidents that occur at intersections are caused by elderly drivers, and development of an assistant system that can prevent non-stopping accidents (i.e., accidents that occur by not stopping when required) is currently a pressing need. To develop an anti-stopping alert, it has been assumed that an alarm that informs the driver about the impending approach of an intersection is effective. However, a uniform alarm system cannot be expected to influence the individual differences among elderly drivers. Then, audio-visual assistance systems that consist of a nudge that informs drivers about the existence of an intersection and of an approach alarm that follows the nudge, as well as of a display and a warning with sound and voice, were designed based on the timing when braking occurs and on a given elderly driver's braking behavior when approaching an intersection. In this research, considering an elderly driver's cognition, jud...

Recurrent posterior instability of the shoulder can be difficult to diagnose and technically challenging to treat. Although not as common as anterior instability, recurrent posterior shoulder instability is prevalent among certain demographic and sporting groups, and may be overlooked if one is not aware of the typical examination and radiographic findings. The diagnosis itself can be difficult as patients typically present with vague or confusing symptoms, and treatment has evolved from open to arthroscopic surgical techniques. This article is intended to review the anatomy and biomechanics associated with posterior shoulder instability, to discuss the pathogenesis and presentation of posterior instability, and to describe the variety of treatment options and clinical results.

Objective: To explore cognitive strategies clinicians apply while performing a medication reconciliation task, handling incomplete and conflicting information. Background: Medication reconciliation is a method clinicians apply to find and resolve inconsistencies in patients’ medications and medical conditions lists. The cognitive strategies clinicians use during reconciliation are unclear. Controlled lab experiments can explore how clinicians make sense of uncertain, missing, or conflicting information and therefore support the development of a human performance model. We hypothesize that clinicians apply varied cognitive strategies to handle this task and that profession and experience affect these strategies. Method: 130 clinicians participated in a tablet-based experiment conducted in a large American teaching hospital. They were asked to simulate medication reconciliation using a card sorting task (CaST) to organize medication and medical condition lists of a specific clinical c...
