Have you ever noticed that when the economy shows strong growth in wages in manufacturing sectors, the stock value in those sectors often drops, but when jobs are slashed by as many as thousands or that when a company invests in new labour replacing technology in its production, the stock value of the companies involved rises (Chasan, 2006; Isidore, 2005)? Despite all the efforts to produce skilled people in traditional fields, the tide of sustainable employment in those areas, appears to be structurally prohibitive raising basic questions of whether traditional perceptions of Technology in school curriculum remains viable and whether a rethink of why Technology ought be taught is now due for a new discourse. In our complex new world, the one right here and now and unfolding outside the school gate, we ought cast forward and rethink the new opportunities before us with Technology studies as a subject in waiting. This paper explores the proposition that, in the context of understandi...

As technology evolves and becomes more complex over time, so must the training for those involved in
creating it. This article reviews the various programs that were developed throughout America’s history
to prepare individuals for designing and working with the technology that inevitably made it a great nation.
The necessities that warranted each program are discussed as well as the reasons for each of their demise.
This article also addresses the factors facing technology-based education and the importance of its future.

In this paper, we present an exploratory protocol study on the use of different communication channels during design sketching. We focus on how individual designers share their mental models with other designers in a group, and analyze their use of graphical, textual, and verbal communications during concept generation. Our findings suggest that verbal communication plays a role in the sharing of individual mental models during sketching, and complements graphical and textual communication channels. However, design teams can still function without verbal communication in that respect, and address design problems. They seem to compensate for the absence of the verbal communication channel by using the graphical and textual channels more, and by relying on a somewhat different communication structure. A natural and arguably more desirable interaction utilizes all three channels in conjunction. Our findings also suggest that, when working in groups, designers develop and share individu...

This research focused on the masters degree programme in industrial design (ID), which is research and practice oriented in the light of current themes and design principles. It argued that a masters degree in industrial design would help graduates specialise in the related field and improve their skills. Therefore, institutional and academic structures of the seven programmes offering masters degrees’ in ID in Turkey were analysed in this study. In addition to this, two survey studies were carried out among the teaching staff in order to find out the current status of the programmes in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. As a result of the field study, problems concerning the academic staff of masters programmes came into prominence as the most important weaknesses despite positive progress witnessed in the increasing number of programmes. In addition, the required improvements of Higher Education Council criteria for the discipline were also found to be a critical situation f...

This paper presents two studies in which an empirical approach was taken to understand and explain form generation and decisions taken in the design process. In particular, the activities addressing aesthetic aspects when exteriorising form ideas in the design process have been the focus of the present study. Diary methods were the starting point of this research for investigating the form generation process through collecting self-reflective comments from the participants. The main focus of this paper is to address potentials and limitations of the three variants of diary method used for data collection, namely, unstructured diaries, structured diaries and visual diaries. A set of method evaluation criteria was developed to compare the structure of the diary variants. By qualitative analysis of the results and comparison of the diary variants, strengths and weaknesses of each variant were identified. One of the prominent factors in the diary variants was pegged to be due to the log...

In the relatively new discipline of design education we have the opportunity to frame the way that design education is formulated. The relative lack of theorists in the field of design education studies leaves unquestioned the relevance of conventional practices of design education that are premised on only tangentially relevant Art, Science and Information Technology models. There is a gap in design education development regarding how to mediate ecological concerns with techno-scientific imperatives. Environmental education researchers can influence this new field by challenging existing approaches to design education with particular attention to the ways design either contributes to or hinders the development of a sustainable society. In order to enter this discussion with environmental education researchers we identify three ecological issues faced by designers and design educators, here we pay particular attention to Industrial Design. The question for this paper is, can environ...
