It can be argued that the successful management of change is crucial to any organisation in order to survive and succeed in the present highly competitive and continuously evolving business environment. However, theories and approaches to change management currently available to academics and practitioners are often contradictory, mostly lacking empirical evidence and supported by unchallenged hypotheses concerning the nature of contemporary organisational change management. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to provide a critical review of some of the main theories and approaches to organisational change management as an important first step towards constructing a new framework for managing change. The article concludes with recommendations for further research.

Many methods have been developed for organisational change, depending most often on a one-time grand event to bring change. While these events take and produce initial energy, employee engagement oftentimes is not sustained. Earth's nature provides key examples of interrelated stable systems, such as the water cycle and independent ecosystems, which should be harnessed for use for organisational development. No current organisational model or system adequately demonstrates the same power that bonds between atoms in a molecule do. Following the examples in the natural world, connections between people in an organisation can be augmented and strengthened, leading to more adaptable organisations. This conceptual sustainable method herein described involves an intentional matrix of pairing employees in an organisation to create or strengthen the connections and communication between them. The key design elements are offered along with a model of how facilitation would be implemented. Based on principles from the natural world, this organisational chemistry method allows companies to develop stronger employee bonds and sustain long-term growth, change, and adaptability.

The digitalisation of the economy has increased tax administrations' traditional tax risks and introduced new tax non-compliance risks, such as the use of income suppression software and tax fraud associated with the use of alternative payment methods, such as cryptocurrencies. This study focuses on the global reform that took place among tax authorities from a tax risk management and assurance perspective. The study was executed in two phases, including a cross-national literature review to synthesise international reform regarding tax risk management and assurance in response to the digitalisation of the economy. This process was followed by interviews with risk, technology and data experts of 30 global tax authorities in order to evaluate the level of implementation of the global reform measures identified in the first research phase. The research results suggest an imbalance in reform among participants from developed and developing economies. An inability to optimise tax ri...

The aim of this paper is to explore the role of design in supporting user-centred development of services and transformation of service organisations. Especially the focus is on bottom-up and top-down service development approaches in the context of service ensembles provided by multiple, interlinked public, private and third sector organisations. The paper presents findings from two separate design case studies. The first study focuses on the organisational perspective in the context of services for elderly, and the second on the customers' perspective in the context of services for immigrants. The findings highlight how the designerly ways of gathering, visualizing, analysing and sharing information may enhance service development.

Leadership and Management are the key factors for excellent services in any institution or organisation. Although the two are similar in some aspects, they seem to be different in their skills, outlook and behaviour. A good leader will always have a clear vision and mission for his achievement by motivating people and supporting them to achieve their goals (Thomas, 2017). Leader always use his skill in working with the people and influencing them in achieving the goals. Whereas a manager uses his skills to make a plan for building organisational systems and accomplishing goals rather than focusing empowerment of their employees (Mullins and Christy, 2011). The previous literatures of (Dunwell, Pitfield and Savill, 1971; Algahtani, 2015) claims that Even though the terms leader and manager are widely used in the academic community and among business organisations. The differences in are roles of a leader are not clearly expressed. Thus, the present study tries to focus on the differences between leaders and managers in business organisations. Also tries to explain how leadership quality can lead institutions much better than any managerial capacities.

In this special issue of the European Journal of Higher Education, a number of experienced scholars provide a broad picture of the most recent round of mergers involving higher education institutions in Europe and beyond. In doing so, they address issues pertaining to the different phases described above and from various theoretical perspectives and in the light of particular historical trajectories and institutional conditions. The primary aim is to provide both an empirical account of recent developments as well as an initial foundation for more sophisticated and robust conceptual models used to illuminate on the complex phenomenon surrounding mergers in higher education, and, in turn, critically assess the implications when it comes to change patterns and future directions at the national and supranational (Europe) levels

Back cover text: Real Social Science presents a new, hands-on approach to social inquiry. The theoretical and methodological ideas behind the book, inspired by Aristotelian phronesis, represent an original perspective within the social sciences, and this volume gives readers for the first time a set of studies exemplifying what applied phronesis looks like in practice. The reflexive analysis of values and power gives new meaning to the impact of research on policy and practice. Real Social Science is a major step forward in a novel and thriving field of research. This book will benefit scholars, researchers, and students who want to make a difference in practice, not just in the academy. Its message will make it essential reading for students and academics across the social sciences.

This essay will delve into the finer aspects of the Third Generation Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) transformation and suggest how the SAF, as an institution, can "change the culture, thinking and behaviour of our people about how they should work together." Only then will SAF soldiers be empowered to be the owners and transformers (agents of change) of the Third Generation SAF.

This paper describes a quest towards relational artistry in the development of a systemic training programme in social care. As part of tiered delivery addressing staff at different levels in the workforce a systemic group supervision process was introduced, adapted from Proctor’s (1997) ‘Bells that Ring’ model. The paper describes the adaptation and delivery of the model through live supervision of senior practitioners by Systemic Mentors working in situ alongside the supervision groups. The project expanded in response to feedback leading to further initiatives to embed systemic ideas. These included a ‘systemic rucksack’ containing sets of cards to guide thesupervision process. ‘Systemic champions’ went on to co-produce and deliver workshops on key concepts for the whole workforce and to engage
frontline workers and families in creating the next steps in the project.

This study examined the effect of visual merchandizing on consumer buying behavior among retail stores in Makurdi metropolis. The specific objectives of the study were; to examine the effect of window displays, lighting and illumination and signage on consumer buying behavior among retail stores in Makurdi metropolis. The study adopted the survey method. The population of the study was 152 (which comprised of 32 employees of the six prominent superstores in Mkaurdi plus 120 customers). Census sampling was adopted and all the 152 served as the sample size. A structured-self-administered questionnaire was adopted as the major instrument for collecting primary data. Regression analysis was used as a technique of data analysis. Study findings revealed that window displays, lighting and illumination and signage all have significant effect on consumer buying behavior among retail stores in Makurdi metropolis. The study concludes that consumer buying behavior is significantly influenced by window displays, lighting and illumination and signage. The study also concludes that lighting and illumination is the strongest determinant of consumer buying behavior among retail stores in Makurdi metropolis. The study therefore recommends among others that retailers should understand shopper's expectations and create the right display of their expectations in order to lure customers in to their stores.

This article examines five common misunderstandings about case-study research: (a) theoretical knowledge is more valuable than practical knowledge; (b) one cannot generalize from a single case, therefore, the single-case study cannot contribute to scientific development; (c) the case study is most useful for generating hypotheses, whereas other methods are more suitable for hypotheses testing and theory building; (d) the case study contains a bias toward verification; and (e) it is often difficult to summarize specific case studies. This article explains and corrects these misunderstandings one by one and concludes with the Kuhnian insight that a scientific discipline without a large number of thoroughly executed case studies is a discipline without systematic production of exemplars, and a discipline without exemplars is an ineffective one. Social science may be strengthened by the execution of a greater number of good case studies.

This article examines the organizational context of social workers in Philippine municipal governments. Recognizing the influence of the organizational context on social work practice, the article analyzes the distribution of power in Philippine municipal bureaucracies and the extent of influence municipal mayors have over the administration of local social welfare programs and services and the social workers who manage them. The analysis explores how workers manage to thrive in the face of the highly unequal relationship they have with their superiors and considers the implications for social work practice.

Corporations dominate our societies. They employ us, sell to us, and influence how we think and who we vote for, while their economic interests dictate local, national, and global agendas. Written in clear and accessible terms, this much-needed textbook provides critical perspectives on all aspects of the relationship between business and society: from an historical analysis of the spread of capitalism as the foundation of the 'corporate' revolution in the late nineteenth-century to the regulation, ethics, and exclusionary implications of business in contemporary society. Furthermore, it examines how corporate power and capitalism might be resisted, outlining a range of alternatives, from the social economy through to new forms of open access or commons ownership.

This book addresses the critical knowledge gaps of mergers involving higher education institutions. It is based on a comparative research project (spring 2013-spring 2015) investigating the phenomena of mergers involving higher education institutions across the Nordic countries – Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The study involved close to 30 scholars from the region, and aimed at shedding critical light on, and providing novel contributions around, the following key aspects:
 Conceptual and theoretical approaches – strengths and limitations - towards the study of the phenomena of mergers in higher education;
 Historical developments, leading to significant structural changes in the domestic higher education landscape, and, in turn, how mergers have been used as a policy/institutional mechanism to foster adaptation to a new external environment at the local, national, regional and international levels;
 The complex dynamics inherent to merger processes by undertaking an in-depth investigation of a series of selected case studies, with a particular focus on the “black-box” associated with the implementation process;
 The implications of the findings as regards future policy and strategic endeavours, theory development and future research agenda.

Phronetic organizational research is an approach to the study of management and organizations focusing on ethics and power. It is based on a contemporary interpretation of the Aristotelian concept phronesis, usually as ‘prudence’. Phronesis is the ability to think and act in relation to values, to deliberate about ‘things that are good or bad for humans’ in the words of Aristotle (1976:1140a24–b12). Phronetic organizational research effectively provides answers to the following four value-rational questions, for specific problematics in management and organization studies: 1. Where are we going with this specific management problematic? 2. Who gains and who loses, and by which mechanisms of power? 3. Is this development desirable? 4. What, if anything, should we do about it?

The Aalborg Project may be interpreted as a metaphor of modern politics, modern administration and planning, and of modernity itself. The basic idea of the project was comprehensive, coherent, and innovative, and it was based on rational and democratic argument. During implementation, however, when idea met reality, the play of Machiavellian princes, Nietzschean will to power, and Foucauldian rationality-as-rationalization resulted in the fragmentation of the project.

In an industry that is high on human touch, the quality of the customer service is of paramount importance. Employees have frequent interaction with the customers/guests and their performance drives the true competitive value of any hotel. Each hotel thus has to have sufficient number of staff that is trained and motivated to continue providing quality service. This paper will investigate how the top hotels in India are not only addressing the issue of current manpower shortage and training but also how they are preparing for the future when the market, the customer profile and the employee expectations are going to undergo a major change, when the brand loyalty could be minimal and the competition high. It will review the practices that the hotels currently use to understand the employee focus in organizations and their contribution to sustainable effectiveness as well as the challenges they face in the coming years and how they are preparing for the same in terms of talent attraction and retention.

At the same time that case studies are widely used and have produced canonical texts, it may be observed that the case study as a methodology is generally held in low regard, or is simply ignored, within the academy. For example, only 2 of the 30 top-ranked U.S. graduate programs in political science require a dedicated graduate course in case study or qualitative methods, and a full third of these programs do not even offer such a course. In contrast, all of the top 30 programs offer courses in quantitative methods and almost all of them require training in such methods, often several courses. In identifying this paradox of the case study’s wide use and low regard, Gerring rightly remarks that the case study survives in a “curious methodological limbo,” and that the reason is that the method is poorly understood. In what follows, we will try to resolve Gerring’s paradox and help case study research gain wider use and acceptance.

The aim of the study was based on, Factors and Solutions to Agricultural Project Sustainability in Zambia. The study was premised on three specific objectives namely: Challenges affecting project sustainability, establishing strategies contributing to overall project performance and to examine the role of strategic management in employee retention in view of Projects lack of capacity for sustainability beyond funding. However, this article is premised on one objective entitled challenges affecting project sustainability. The study was mixed research methodology and used survey design by way of collecting, analysing, and integrating data. Structured questionnaires with 20 questions were administered to respondents and a semi structured schedule was administered to participants in the Focus Group Discussion (FGDs). The analysis of the research findings showed that skill, qualification, and experience of managers are essential in project sustainability. Qualified managers should lead projects to inspire confidence and effectiveness of projects. Project sustainable goals must be established and communicated effectively to all employees to be part and parcel of the success. The findings established that sole dependence on project cooperating partners funding has long term challenges. Therefore, this study concluded that having multiple sources of funding to support various programs was pertinent to the security and organizational sustainability. This study recommended that Agricultural projects should collaborate with Profit Organizations such as the seed, fertilizer, and chemical and equipment companies to seek support financially or materially and ride on these NGOs to market themselves. Based on these results the researcher formulated a specialized Agricultural Project Income Generation and Diversification model that could help the sustainability of Agricultural funded projects. Besides, the Researcher recommended a replication of this study in other settings to give a wider perspective of the findings.

This article is a presentation of research findings on the manifested strengths and weaknesses in organisational culture within the selected municipalities in the Eastern Cape. Diagnostic reports on local government such as the Auditor-General's reports and the Local Government Turnaround Strategy, have focused on broad assessments of financial management, leadership and governance. However, there is limited focus on institutional level mechanisms, in particular, examining embedded cultures unique in individual municipalities with their implications on performance. Literature shows that although organisational culture tends to be a taken-for-granted, a tactical way of thinking or acting, it is one of the most powerful and stable forces in organisations. The research used a tested model in organisational culture adapted to the South African municipal government context for measurement. The reliability co-efficient was at least 0.7 and considered to be reflective of adequate reliability. This article presents results from a survey sample of 767 employees from the five municipalities in the OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The survey tested four culture traits (mission, adaptability, consistency and involvement) and found areas of strengths, such as in the customer/client focus and strategic intent,that the municipalities can continue to build on. It, however, found areas of weakness to include lack of operational dynamics needed to drive strategic intent and the motivation for organisational learning and change. The article also presents possible management levers to drive change and performance based on the findings.
