This study integrates social capital theory and network analysis to explore the relationship between interorganizational networks and organizational action. It analyzes the collaborative partnerships that religious congregations form to provide social services, and it examines how these ties are associated with the number and types of programs they offer. Using cross-sectional and panel data from a national study of congregations, the analysis finds significant relationships between congregations' interorganizational ties and their social service provision patterns. Congregations that collaborate with other organizations offer more programs, and the effect is even greater for congregations with a diverse portfolio of collaborators. Furthermore, a network analysis indicates that congregations with a similar portfolio of collaborators offer a similar menu of services. This study demonstrates that an organization's collaborative ties, above and beyond its internal characteristics, are significantly associated with both the volume and scope of its activity.

Compares conceptualizations of homelessness as a temporary state through which people pass or a permanent trait that emanates from individual characteristics. Evidence from a longitudinal study of 564 homeless families in New York City and additional secondary sources supports the view that for families, homelessness is a temporary state that is resolved by the provision of subsidized housing. Even for single individuals with severe mental disturbances, housing is a key factor in ending homelessness, although here there is more evidence that social services also contribute. Policy implications are that governments should take a more active role in reducing homelessness by providing access to subsidized housing.

Over the past years, local government in Finland has undergone unprecedented changes. The number of municipalities has decreased by 25%, and the service structure has become increasingly regional. One factor underlying this trend is the restructuring of local government services, known as the PARAS project, but municipal finances, legislative amendments and changes in service demands also play a part. The purpose of the ParasSos monitoring and evaluation study is to explore the transition in social services with special reference to the perspective of the clients using the services and the employees providing them. This will enable conclusions to be drawn about how the PARAS project has affected services at the grass-root level, specifically with regard to their availability and quality. The evaluation focused on a number of municipalities in central Finland, involving both employee interviews and a survey among local residents. The employee and user perspectives highlight the conse...

Risk and protective factors of psychosocial development in children in different residential care settings need to be further studied internationally, in order to develop working methods for social and health care services. Standardized methods of the CBCL, TRF, and CGAS, were used to evaluate psychosocial functioning of children in children's homes in Finland. Further, data on sociodemographic situations and traumatic events in their lives were assembled. The percentage of behavioural and emotional problems within clinical or borderline range in the different ratings was 55–80%. Combined traumatization, sexual abuse, school difficulties, male sex, older age (>11 years) and older age at first and on-going placement (>7 years), as well as difficulties in relationships with parents are likely to be associated with more severe behaviour problems and lower general functioning. The results of this study show that children and adolescents in social service residential settings are a highly vulnerable group and that these children have extensive mental health needs.

This paper examines the major features of the Ghanaian social security system. It discusses the Ghanaian scheme by examining the extent of coverage, criteria for eligibility, and the method of administration and financing. The paper undertakes an assessment of the existing security scheme and highlights its major limitations and weaknesses. It proposes measures for reforming the security system by suggesting an extension in coverage, adjusting the benefit formula, increasing expenditure on social services for the elderly, adjusting benefits to reflect the cost of living index, creating employer-based private pension schemes, and exploring alternative ways of investing social security accumulated funds.

Features of online social information services show promises for overcoming obstacles in current knowledge management practices. This paper first discussed the potential efficacy and emerging practices of such technologies in the domain of knowledge management. Then a quality model of online social information systems was derived from prior literature on online information service quality and analyses of characteristics of emerging technologies.

Increasing numbers of lesbian and bisexual women are choosing to have children. This qualitative study investigated the degree to which a sample of Canadian lesbian and bisexual women were satisfied with the health and social services that they received during the process of trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and during the early postpartum weeks and months. Three focus groups were conducted: (1) women who were themselves, or whose partners were, in the process of trying to conceive (n = 6); (2) biological parents of young children (n = 7); and (3) women who were non-biological parents of young children or whose partners were currently pregnant (n = 10). Participants were asked to discuss their positive and negative experiences with health and social services during their efforts to conceive and through the perinatal period. Participants were very satisfied with the care they received from midwives, doulas, and public health nurses. Services directed specifically to lesbian, gay, and bisexual parents were also perceived to be important sources of information and support. Many participants perceived fertility services to be unsupportive or unable to address their different health care needs. Participants expressed satisfaction with pregnancy-related services provided by non-physicians and dissatisfaction with services provided by physicians and fertility clinics. There is a strong desire for fertility services specific to lesbian and bisexual women, but even minor changes to existing services could improve the satisfaction of lesbian and bisexual patients.

Since the 1990s, change management has received considerable attention as the new paradigm for the management of organisational transformations as well as behavioural and motivational changes within both for-profit and non-profit organisations. As a result, change management has been included in most bachelor's and master's degree programmes in social work and ped-agogics in Germany, either as additional courses or as an area of specialisa-tion. However, its interdisciplinary and intersectional nature has, so far, not been thoroughly considered in the development of managerial and social competences. In particular, the relationship between management science and professional practice was not given much attention, even though the development of change strategies in Human Service Organisations (HSO) must be based on research findings from both social sciences and management studies. In addition, management research and education need to draw conclusions from experiences gained in professional practice (e.g. Raelin, 1997). Research on the theory of transfer in the field of change management has not kept pace with the practice of leading change. So far, existing research has failed to develop a satisfactory concept of theory-practice transfer and ignored the relationship of the justification and development of change strategies as part of the management of social organisations. A number of important questions for researchers, educators, practitioners, consultants, etc. are

This article examines the survival strategies undertaken by homeless people. The findings of an ethnographic research, both in Italy and in Colombia, highlight the main activities which are performed by the homeless for their daily survival. We can call those activities 'shadow works'. They refer to the informal and hidden economy linked to exchanges carried out directly on the street and allow the procurement of essential goods for the mental and physical health of the people who live their marginality on the street. These works are "shadow" in the sense that, in addition to belonging to the informal sphere of the underground economy, they often reproduce work activities of the "normal" society in a form adapted to street life. Challenging many misconceptions, this article suggests that "street society" is complex, organized , clearly separated from mainstream society, and providing a cultural framework that guides homeless people's survival strategies.
