It is mostly agreed that Popper's criterion of falsifiability fails to provide a useful distinction between science and pseudo-science, because ad-hoc assumptions are always able to save any theory that conflicts with the empirical data (this is the Duhem-Quine problem), and a characterization of ad-hoc assumptions is lacking. Moreover, adding some testable predictions is not very difficult. It should be emphasized that the Duhem-Quine argument does not simply make the distinction approximate (if it were so, all our problems would be solved!), but it makes it totally useless. Indeed, no philosophical criterion of demarcation is presently able to rule out even some of the most blatant cases of pseudo-science, not even approximatively (in any well defined sense of approximation). This is in sharp contrast with our firm belief that some theories are clearly not scientific. Where does this belief come from? In this paper I argue that it is necessary and possible to recognize the notion of syntactic simplicity that is able to tell the difference between empirically equivalent scientific and non-scientific theories, with a precision that is adequate to many important practical purposes, and it fully agrees with the judgments generally held in the scientific community.

This thesis loactes a Christian rationale for human well-being in relation to the doctrine of the triune God. Specifically, this theological inquiry examines the triune God’s work in, and for, creation with a view to identifying the characteristics and dynamics of divine well-being through the intra-trinitarian movement of gift and receipt. This gifting and receiving within the Godhead is identified as ‘Divine self-enrichment’ — defined as God enriching God in the perfection and fullness of God. The mode through which Divine self-enrichment occurs is essentially kenotic. The thesis provides an extended inquiry into the theological logic of kenotic-enrichment, and its implications for human well-being. In particular, the thesis argues that the pattern of kenotic-enrichment is to be discerned in the dynamic economy of God in creation and human life. When humanity exhibits characteristics of kenotic-enrichment identified in the economic Trinity, there we see intimations of the work of God. In this sense, the archetype of divine enrichment is antecedently operative in the creation; where kenotic-enrichment conditions created well-being. The thesis, therefore, argues that a theology of triune self-enrichment provides an alternate, and complementary, theological paradigm for Christian rationale and praxis of international development and humanitarian aid.

I show that such companions in guilt arguments can work if, as we have good reason to believe, moral reasons and epistemic reasons are instances of fundamentally the same relation.

‘Tone of voice’ is a linguistic brand language that is used for branding. As increasing the number of customer choices, brands are required to appeal the brand values to their customers in terms of customer experience rather than the visual attractiveness. The tone of voice is a key to improve the customer experience. Information designers can simplify and manage the tone of voice in information design to help the communication between brands and the customers. This paper first describes what is the tone of voice and how it came out in the brand and branding history. Then how simplicity and complexity relevant to the tone of voice are presented from the both business and creative viewpoints. Finally, this paper suggests how information designers should use the tone of voice for improving the brand communication.

While history is rich with saints worthy of study and emulation, this paper will seek to examine the lives of the Desert Fathers of the fourth and fifth centuries of the Common Era. Similar to modern believers, these Jesus followers lived at a time when the prophetic edge of the church was dulled and Christianity was in favor in the halls of power. Seeking to follow Jesus with all their heart, soul, strength and mind (Lk. 10:27), the Desert Fathers gave up fleshly comforts (e.g. soft beds, nice clothes, conveniences, regular meals, etc.) and embraced a life of simplicity and self-sacrifice. Though their lifestyle may seem extreme, “rough-hewn words of life” pour forth from these ancient fathers to water the souls of the modern Christian who are facing an increasingly materialistic, sexual, hectic, and individualistic culture and church world.

Anglophone archaeology arose to explain what we now refer to as the emergence of complex society. This article reviews complexity theory from its nineteenth-century origins in Darwinian thought to contemporary studies of social evolution. Rather than making a case for the continued theorization of complexity, however, this review advances the proposition that a new inquiry into the historical development of social simplicity should be inaugurated, one in which simplicity is understood as a derived trait that has evolved in creative opposition to complexity. Examples of what such an inquiry might look like are drawn from recent research into the archaeology of indigenous North America.

The noun phrase "homeopathic medicines" ("homeopathic medicinal products") is clearly counter-logical. It is semantically antithetical in itself. It involves the equivocal counter-logic that confuses and mixes a compound entity-the medicinal product-and a simple entity-the homeopathic simplex-. Its core, medicines, means compound pharmaceutical forms that may contain a number of ingredients, including one, or more than one, active substance. It is totally alien to Homeopathy, which stands on the inherent simplicity in the Principle of similitude, and that in order to cure only applies a simplex-a single dynamized simple active principle-in each treatment phase of every individual case. This fallacious noun phrase is the counter-logical epicenter that instigates not only the long surreptitious confounding task that the homeopathic pharmaindustry carries out in the bosom of homeopathy, but also the current global enantiophatic offensive against "homeopathy supplanted by pseudohomeopathy", for the sake of the social annihilation of perfectly simple, pure Homeopathy. It is, in short, the cornerstone of the global strategy of the pervasive ideological forces of biomedical capitalism to maintain enantiopathy in power, and, under the pretext of the fight against pseudoscience and pseudotherapies, to cover up its pseudo-beneficence and pseudo-scientificity. The counter-logical denomination "homeopathic medicines" is the false premise that scientifically invalidates the content of the homonymous article of the current European Directive and Law of medicinal products for human use. Its legal reality is therefore a serious scientific fraud, and should be repealed.

Most of us want to live a simple life. Unfortunately, the world we are living in right now does not readily meet our need for simplicity for we are walking on a path where luxuries offer us the greatest things that life could offer. As we all know, the standards of living varies from time to time and fitting in society really depends on how we perceive the world we are venturing right now and what the world gives us. So, how should we really live our lives? Should we live it on how we want it to be? Or should we live it according to how the world wants it to be? Well, the answer is both. We take all the opportunities and things that the world is throwing at us then, we use those things according to our just. But remember, keep it simple and the life you want will follow.

Highlights • Every non-renewable natural resource has a beginning, middle, and end of production. • We are already, or near, the peak of fossil fuel production after which the supply is declining irreversibly. We cannot depend too much on oil any longer. • With the limited stocks of fossil energy and limited quota of CO2 emission, a global transition to a low-Carbon economy is a necessity, not an option. • Without an intervention, the rising global demand for fossil energy is not likely to be abated anytime soon. Developing countries need viable alternatives towards transitioning. • Resilience skills to face a heap of uncertainty about the future is of paramount importance. Thus, a need for paradigm shift, to change the way people view their lives. • With emerging evidences of a link between human exploitation of nature and pandemics, we must, therefore, be better prepared for outbreaks of new diseases in the future. This, and the challenges of dwindling resources, have brought about a need for resilience skills to face a heap of uncertainty about the future.

Pharmacotherapeutic inefficiency and uncertainty are intrinsic to the treatment of disease in so far as concurrent active principles are administered to individual persons. Although it meets accepted standards of care, it's absolutely contrary to the progress of medicine as science-using practice. Astonishingly, an apparently unimportant enacted noun phrase is the counterlogical epicentre of such an extremely serious scientific fraud affecting the standards of pharmacotherapeutics quite adversely. Though grammatically correct, the noun phrase in question is seriously flawed. Denying the inherent simplicity in the principle of similitude, the primary source of logic, science and therapeutics, such a deceitful noun phrase misdirects pharmacotherapeutics to systematic counterlogical unscientificity. It is the false epistemic premise that invalidates all the content of the corresponding article of the current Acts/Directives/Laws relating to medicinal products for human use in force in the Western countries. The scientific community ought to quit using such an inappropriate noun phrase, and its legal validity have to be repealed unconditionally.

The increasing issue of plastic waste is really (at least) two separate but related problems when plastic materials drop out of use or circulation. First, some plastic items have an entirely linear lifepath because of the way they are constructed, the materials they use or the purpose to which they are put. The best possible outcome for such plastics would be to sit in landfills for thousands of years, contributing to issues of landfill volume and long term maintenance. Second, some plastics items are more likely than others to be disposed of improperly after which they become visible litter in natural areas or invisible microplastic contamination in water, soil, food and even human bodies. Even when the plastic in these products is recyclable, the material is not captured effectively in waste collection systems and leads to an accidentally linear lifepath. Fortunately, both problems can be addressed by introducing more circularity into the design, use, recovery and processing of plastic. Plastic wastes can be made less linear if they are averted through the use of more circular materials, minimised by decreasing the amount of plastic used, delayed if reused rather than replaced after a single use. Even if minimised or delayed, plastics that cannot be averted could be recycled in various mechanical and chemical ways, which will be most effective if plastic is simplified as well as captured and processed in innovative ways. Finally, the energy embedded within plastic waste can be recovered if the wastes are burned for energy production or if plastic-consuming microbes are developed that can use plastic as an input to biological processes. None of these methods are applicable to all possible plastic waste situations nor are the methods completely free of problems of their own. This paper describes the factors contributing to both plastics problems and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each of the proposed methods to address those problems. Finally, the paper explores how multiple methods can be combined through innovations in multiple societal arenas to create a mixed solutions that turns the current 'linear plastic lifepath' into a future 'circular plastic lifecycle'.

Communication is fundamental human right. Sign language is the normal way of communication for deaf and dumb people among themselves and with normal people. Still there exists a large communication gap between normal people and disabled people since normal people often find it difficult to interpret the sign language. To minimize this gap we propose a new methodology which converts sign language to text. It mainly consists of the flex sensors to capture the hand gestures and the recognized character is to a smartphone. This way disabled people are able to communicate with the normal people and vice versa.

To create simple interior space within heritage building is a tricky challenge. Simple space does not mean scanty design, conversely, simple design in the heritage area consists profound meanings and reflects the original aesthetic value of that space. The design of shophouse as a formation is simple raw building, contained three to four main zones. While, the interior space of shophouse reflects the value of community and rich culture by using simplicity as a factor to present the complex feelings and meanings in one place. Georgetown is the capital city of Penang, Malaysia, which populated by a harmonized mixture of communities, this mix-culture affects the architecture and interior style of the city. As a result, eclectic architecture style created and become an icon of Georgetown. Therefore, it's listed as a World Heritage City in 2008 by UNESCO. The current research is to clarify the relationship between simplicity and aesthetic in the interior design of heritage buildings. Thus, the study is a qualitative mode, including structured interview, the responders were the users, owners and staff of coffee shops in heritage shophouse. As well as, observation, behavioural mapping is used to collect the data for the surfaces and users' reaction. Aesthetic value does not depend on the complex design, high quality material and form. Good places should be simply understood by the high familiarity value. Additionally, shaped great space should have harmonized value between users' needs and identity of that space.

A widespread assumption in experimental comparative (animal) cognition is that, barring compelling evidence to the contrary, the default hypothesis should postulate the simplest cognitive ontology (mechanism, process, or structure) consistent with the animal’s behavior. I call this assumption the principle of cognitive simplicity (PoCS). In this essay, I show that PoCS is pervasive but unjustified: a blanket preference for the simplest cognitive ontology is not justified by any of the available arguments. Moreover, without a clear sense of how cognitive ontologies are to be carved up at the joints—and which tools are appropriate for the job—PoCS rests on shaky conceptual ground.

The nexus of the moral luck debate is the control principle, which says that people are responsible only for things within their control. In this paper, I will first argue that the control principle should be restrained to blameworthiness, because responsibility is too wide a concept to square with control. Many deniers of moral luck appeal to the intuitiveness of the control principle. Defenders of moral luck do not share this intuition and demand a stronger defence of the control principle. I will establish a defence of the control principle based on the value of simplicity for selecting a theory of blameworthiness. A simpler theory of blameworthiness is more likely to be true, and not being falsely judged blameworthy is desirable. I will conclude that simplicity advices the acceptance of the control principle over other theories of blameworthiness that embrace factors beyond control.

In simplicity, as far as we know, there was nothing outstanding in the life of the Virgin except the things mentioned by the evangelists. Nazareth was a small village, and a carpenter named Joseph lived in a very humble house and supported his family by working hard. Mary was the wife of this carpenter. She did the same things as any other poor man’s wife. She was always busy with her monotonously repeatedly house chores day after day, year after year; the same thing that filled the lives of so many other women. The way: ‘Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God, passes unnoticed, as just one more among the women of her country is something worth learning from, a life lived with “simplicity.”

This paper uses a notion of generality common in econometrics to analyze the debate in population biology on the three-way tradeoff in model building between generality, realism and precision. Taking a cue from John Stuart Mill's views on economics, I hypothesize that the disagreement about the existence of tradeoffs in model building originates from a confusion between 'empirical generality' and 'theoretical generality'. I use these two notions to reconstruct the two different interpretations of the relation between generality and specificity found in the debate, only one of which implies a tradeoff. Existing accounts of tradeoffs in model building never use both notions of generality simultaneously. I provide the very first account which combines both notions. Surprisingly, this account turns out to be Levins' three-way tradeoff exactly. This is an exciting result because so far no scholar has succeeded in providing a rigorous account of Levins' three-way tradeoff. Moreover, current consensus is that there is no three-way tradeoff between generality, realism and precision.

The conventional therapeutic beneficence of clinical ethics is the transient palliative contraria contariis enantiopathy, which is accounted "background, necessary, principal treatment". The present biomedical therapeutic standards express in this particular way the primary epistemic vacuum that still exists in medical education, namely the didactic neglect of the inherent simplicity in the Principle of similitude, the primary source of art, science and medical therapeutics. Refounding medical ethics is therefore an epistemological duty and a moral imperative. Otherwise, the Codes of Medical Ethics will continue to perpetuate a therapeutic beneficient eticity that is unaware of the individuals' right to health-restoring healing efficiency. It would be contrary to progress in the art and science of healing each individual case of disease with certainty, in the most efficient, foreseeable and simple way.

Near-miss experiences are one of the main sources of intense emotions. Despite people's consistency when judging near-miss situations and when communicating about them, there is no integrated theoretical account of the phenomenon. In particular, individuals' reaction to near-miss situations is not correctly predicted by rationality-based or probability-based optimization. The present study suggests that emotional intensity in the case of near-miss is in part predicted by Simplicity Theory.

The article expands on several topics from ethnographic research on the baking of homemade cakes, conducted in the area of Dąbrowa Białostocka. It focuses on the specific category of the taste of a homemade cake, mine as opposed to purchased, as well as the separate category of simple. Although the homemade cakes my interviewees baked were usually comprised of mass-produced components, and often contained artificial dyes and chemical additives (in spite of their living in the country and having their own farms), in their opinion, they were homemade, and much healthier than those available in shops, which were accused of being products of chemistry. This shows how the “hominess” of a cake is constructed. Applying the category of “hominess” shows how women try to meet the expectations of their children by creating homemade versions of popular sweets. Cakes described as simple, like yeast cakes, poppy seed cakes, etc., are used pragmatically in relation to relatives and friends from the city who expect something “traditional” when they visit, maintaining the view that the village is supposed to maintain tradition and authenticity, as well as tastes and recipes.
