During Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, we saw HCA Healthcare colleagues embody the true spirit of dedication and resilience. Today, we’re honored to shine a light on Victoria Drury, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in HCA Healthcare’s Memorial Satilla Health emergency department. Never once calling in during her nine years at the Waycross, Georgia hospital, Victoria maintains a perfect attendance record that is both inspiring and a testament to her character. Despite the severe storm damage in her community following Hurricane Helene, Victoria was determined to make it to Memorial Satilla Health to care for patients and support her team. Unfortunately, both exits from her neighborhood were blocked by debris, so Victoria called the hospital and was told Emergency Department Director Ashton Poole would come pick her up at first light if she could make it out to the main road. For Victoria, dependability is more than a personal value – it’s a legacy she aims to impart to others. “I always try to teach my children to be somebody to rely on,” Victoria shared. “Your character is your word, and I try to be that example.” When Victoria arrived at the hospital, she diligently worked alongside her fellow ER colleagues to ensure anyone who needed care could receive it. “What stood out was all the admin and staff just coming together to work,” Victoria said. This week, we are honored to uplift the inspiring stories of HCA Healthcare’s veteran colleagues and the positive impact they’re making in the communities we serve. Meet Dr. Carl Devemark, trauma surgeon and emergency general surgeon at HCA Healthcare affiliate Del Sol Medical Center. Before saving lives in the El Paso, Texas hospital operating room, Dr. Devemark served as a F-16 fighter pilot. Graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1999 with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Dr. Devemark initially became a fighter pilot. He served in the United States Air Force for 11 years, completing 150 combat hours and retiring with invaluable experiences that would later shape his journey into healthcare. When it came time to transition out of the military, Dr. Devemark sought a career where he could continue making a difference. For a surgeon, the transition from fighter jets to the operating room came naturally. “Trauma surgery is a lot like flying a fighter jet,” Dr. Devemark shared. “You have to be calm, collected and cool under pressure and be able to think about the overall picture of being a fighter pilot or saving a patient’s life.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the thousands of veterans, active-duty personnel and military spouses a part of the HCA Healthcare family. Delivering more than 212,000 babies annually, HCA Healthcare is uniquely positioned to give moms and babies a healthier tomorrow. We use data from our hospital births to look for insights to improve prenatal, natal and postnatal care. One in 10 babies is born premature in the U.S. During Prematurity Awareness Month, we are raising awareness about preterm births by honoring the experiences of HCA Healthcare’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) families and the dedicated NICU professionals who care for them. When Mikayla Martinez was 23 weeks pregnant, she experienced migraines, vomiting and difficulty eating. Doctors at her local emergency department shared that she likely developed severe preeclampsia, a life-threatening condition that put both her and her unborn baby at risk. Mikayla required a higher level of care and she was transferred to HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare. The Austin, Texas hospital has an antepartum and high-risk pregnancy unit for women whose pregnancies require specialized care as well as a Level IV NICU. Mikayla’s son Noah was born prematurely at St. David’s Medical Center at 23 weeks, weighing 13 ounces. Thanks to the expert skill and endless compassion of our NICU colleagues, today Noah is four years old and thriving. “I am reminded every day that he is a miracle,” Mikayla shared. “I don’t know how [the care teams] do it but thank you. It’s like they are angels because they were able to help me every step of the way in keeping me calm and saving me and Noah’s life. Annually, Medical-Surgical Nurses Week is celebrated from November 1-7. Every day, we recognize medical-surgical (med-surg) nurses across HCA Healthcare who work relentlessly to provide our patients with quality care and compassion. Med-surg nursing is one of the most diverse and dynamic specialties, providing exposure to a wide-range of patient populations and medical conditions. For two years, Jennifer Reyes has been a nurse on the med-surg unit at HCA Healthcare’s Medical City Healthcare in Texas. The acute care hospital offers a Level II Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center and an accredited Chest Pain Center. As a medical-surgical nurse, Jennifer collaborates with providers and care team members to provide outstanding patient experiences and positive clinical outcomes. “As a fourth-generation nurse, nursing is part of my family,” Jennifer shared. “I want to make someone’s day a little brighter and improve the patients’ care. In the aftermath of recent storms we’re continuously inspired by stories of HCA Healthcare colleagues, like Tami Acquino, clinical nurse coordinator at HCA Healthcare’s Mission Health, who went above and beyond for to care for our patients and her community during Hurricane #Helene. Before the rain began, Tami arrived at the Asheville, North Carolina hospital with a packed bag — planning to work through the weather and spend the night — and was deeply moved by the events that unfolded. "We all just put our game faces on," Tami said. "Everybody was holding each other, embracing each other as they were finding out families were okay, as they were finding out if their properties were okay or not okay. I think that we did a really great job on our unit — being able to keep our patients calm, being able to support our families coming in to see their loved ones and to provide the best care we could." As Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, Dr. Sammie Mosier leads HCA Healthcare’s nursing agenda to advance the practice of nursing among our 99,000 dedicated nurses, focusing on nurse advocacy, clinical excellence and professional development at every level. The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) recently recognized Sammie as Nurse Leader to Watch in the October issue of Nurse Leader magazine, highlighting her leadership journey and the impact she is making across our 188 hospitals. Sammie began her nursing career as a medical-surgical nurse at HCA Healthcare’s Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Kentucky and served in progressive leadership roles over the years before assuming the role of chief nurse executive for HCA Healthcare. In her role, Sammie prioritizes amplifying the voice of our nurses. “As a nurse leader, my most important role is to advocate for nursing in our hospital system,” Sammie shared in the article. “I walk the floor and hear stories from nurses as often as possible.
