Name:

Named by K.A. Rodgers, J.E. Chisholm, R.J. Davis, and C.S. Nelson in 1977 for the Maori name of the type locality, Motukorea, meaning 'island of cormorants'.

Partial dehydration readily occurs.

As part of the recent re-evaluation of the nomenclature of the hydrotalcite supergroup (Mills et al., 2012), motukoreaite was identified as a questionable species which needs further investigation. The range of composition currently ascribed to motukoreaite may represent more than one species.
