busy91 Charlie Wilson's War (2007) - True story but not really worth my time. Congressman conspires with CIA agent to help Afghan rebels, defet the Red Army. **The Golden Compass (**2007) - Yawn! I mean after Harry Potter and Narnia, this just pales. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) - French biopic about Elle magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby and his life after a stroke leavees him paralyzed. You see most of the film through his eyes. Moving film. Iron Man (2008) - OK, well we all know my love for Robert Downey Jr., but aside from that, this movie was really good. I like the way they mixed in current events to make it more watchable. (2 comments | comment on this) |

7:42 pm - movies 45 - 63 |
changeskat 045: The Golden Compass [Chris Weitz 2007]i'm afraid i've never read these books yet, but just from watching the movie, i realized that they were trying to cram too much into a couple of hours from a far more elaborate story. it was too confusing and strange for someone who had never read the books. before one point was made, they moved on to the next one. maybe i'll like it more when i've finally read the books?046: The Devil Wears Prada [David Frankel 2006]super cheesy, classic comedy. i thought it was full of eyecandy in terms of fashion (not so much good looks, except for wonderful meryl streep). but it was just so very unoriginal that i can't make myself say that i liked it anymore than i liked 27 dresses or knocked up. 047: Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark [Steven Spielberg 1981]Love it. Always have, always will.048: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom [Steven Spielberg 1984]Great childhood memories.049: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade [Steven Spielberg 1989]Definitely my favourite Indy movie. It has River Phoenix, Sean Connery, John Rhys-Davies, what more can you ask for? 050: Jurassic Park [Steven Spielberg 1993]I true love this one. It's so innovative and exciting. A definite favourite.051: The Lost World: Jurassic Park [Steven Spielberg 1997]Still fairly entertaining, but far more useless than its predecessor. I mean, the first movie was truly aweinspiring, but this one just went too far as the dinosaurs went into town.052: Jurassic Park [Joe Jonston 2001]Completely useless, constantly plays on its former jokes - the only strength found in this movie. BLAH.053: This is Spinal Tap [Rob Reiner 1984]Completely awesome - so funny and true to every single rockumentary every to come out on this planet =D Can't believe I haven't seen it before.054: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [David Yates 2007]Meh. Love the book, the movie doesn't come up to par. 055: Jaws [Steven Spielberg 1975]AWESOME, except only one thing - are all 1970s movies that loud? haha it seemed like everyone was shouting over each other constantly. i had the same experience with The Goonies, which i loved to death when i was a child, but when i saw it again in adult life, i experienced it to be so loud and noisy, i almost couldn't handle it! how strange indeed.056: Armageddon [Michael Bay 1998]Insanely unrealistic, but thoroughly entertaining.057: Terminator [James Cameron 1984]One of my favourite action flicks of all time. <3 058: Liar Liar [Tom Shadyac 1997]Typical Jim Carrey flick (love the 90s). At times incredibly funny, mostly very cheesy. Favourite bit definitely the blooper reel.059: Spaceballs [Mel Brooks 1987]Love everything that has to do with Star Wars parody. Some genious scenes that I can never forget.060: The Rock [Michael Bay 1996]So dramatic! Music very cool. Nic Cage not so. Sean Connery makes up for absolutely everything.061: Clerks [Kevin Smith 1994]The king of all dialogue based movies. So simple and genious.062: Mallrats [Kevin Smith 1995]Hilarious! I honestly love anything Kevin Smith comes up with. It used to be a breath of fresh air and it still serves as such.063: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back [Kevin Smith 2001]Completely over the top, but extremely funny. You just can't take it very seriously. Love it. (comment on this) |

changeskat 021: Biohazard / Resident Evil [Paul W.S. Anderson 2002]I had watched Resident Evil a long time ago and forgotten about it. Then, the other day, the boyfriend and I decided to watch something called Biohazard and I thought - "hey, Milla Jovovich is hot, sci-fi can be hot, why not? besides, resident evil wasn't half bad." We start to watch it, and it keeps reminding me of something. I can't put my finger on it (and why would milla jovovich star in 2 zombie trilogies??), and not until we get to Biohazard 2 do I realize it is the very same movie. Doh! Biohazard is actually the original name of the Resident Evil games, and as we are in Japan, obviosly they use the original title.Anyways, it's not half bad, this one. As far as zombie movies get, it's quite entertaining.022: Biohazard 2 / Resident Evil: Apocalypse [Alexander Witt 2004]I wish I could say the same about this one. It's so messy, and strays away from itself a lot. Still, not quite as bad as...023: Biohazard 3 / Resident Evil: Extinction [Russell Mulcahy 2007]Man, this was a waste of time. It got completely out of hand. The bad guy made no sense what so ever.024: Office Space [Mike Judge 1999]I really enjoyed this one. I always love a movie where someone breaks out of the norm entirely without fear. (see: Fight Club)025: Live Free or Die Hard [Len Wiseman 2007]Die Hard: In the Now. They were really trying, eh. Computer hax, technological crime. Even Kevin Smith starred in it as a notorious hacker! that was quite a surprise. It was entertaining for an action movie, but it didn't really cut it.026: I Am Legend [Francis Lawrence 2007]I have always hated Will Smith very deeply. My gut wrenched every time he screamed in Fresh Prince and I could never even remotely find him funny or credible. This time, however, I was undeniably surprised. He managed this role very, very well. I'm not sure about the movie as a whole, but Will Smith definitely carried it through skillfully.027: Equilibrium [Kurt Wimmer 2002]I liked the idea of the movie, at the same time as I couldn't quite see past the copying of the infamous 1984 scenario. However, I always loved to see any movie with a 1984 story and I did enjoy this one as well. It's a bit flat overall, but has an interesting message.028: Die Hard [John McTiernan 1988]Love. It. To. Bits. Late 80s-early 90s action movies never fail. Love them all.029: Die Hard 2 [Renny Harlin 1990]This was actually the very first time I saw this one - somehow, I managed to escape it all these years. I loved it, ofcourse. PS: a very young Robert Patrick! haha030: Die Hard: With a Vengeance [John McTiernan 1995]First of all, I can't believe it's 1995, I seriously can't. I still feel it's fresh and new. ACK! I'm getting old!! But I love this one too. It's everything a proper action movie should be. 031: Spider-Man [Sam Raimi 2002]I moderately liked it. It drove me neither here nor there. It's a bit exciting to see Peter Parker transform, but it's a bit annoying to see his emo teenager side, although I understand that it's the essense of Spider-Man in a way. He's still human, he's still a teenager, he'll still make bad, selfish choises. But it's annoying.032: Spider-Man 2 [Sam Raimi 2004]From here on out, it stopped making sense.033: Spider-Man 3 [Sam Raimi 2007]And I'm thinking, "Thank god I was cleaning the house while watching it, so I didn't waste time."034: V for Vendetta [James McTeigue 2005]2005 already? Oh time, where have thou flown?!! Didn't it come out yesterday? Blast!! Anyway, a masterpiece of a rare caliber nowadays. Love so many things about it - the 1984-scenario, the anti-hero that is a master of his work, the wonderful Natalie Portman. And the wordplays. Mm. I don't like comics, but perhaps I will read this one someday.035: Babel [Alejandro González Iñárritu 2006]After watching it, I was left a little confused - what is this all really about? Without a doubt, if you divide the movie into smaller parts, I loved every single one. I loved the acting, the interaction between people, the intervowen stories, the ability to portray reality exactly as it is, although a couple of points may have been exaggerated a little bit, i'm sure the tourists wouldn't act like complete assholes in real life. Japan's setting was more or less exactly like it is, which was impressive because usually, there's always something wrong and something off. This time, there wasn't. But what is this movie about on whole? I can't figure it out yet.036: Zodiac [David Fincher 2007]Snore. I must have missed the class where they informed us of what this movie is supposed to mean. Evidently, according to "everyone", it's a very good movie, different from anything David Fincher usually does (very true), not too this, not too that, bla bla. And I didn't get it, I just didn't. Maybe I should watch it again.037: The Boondock Saints [Troy Duffy 1999]Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. 038: The Quick and the Dead [Sam Raimi 1995]I always loved this movie. I saw it for the first time when I was a young teenybopper and loved Russell Crowe to bits. For that reason, I have a different kind of relationship to the whole movie. But I think it's quite a good movie on a whole. A bit simple and easy, but I can completely live with that.039: 27 Dresses [Anne Fletcher 2008]BLARG.040: Troy [Wolfgang Petersen 2004]Oh my goodness why does Hollywood have to do this? One good movie in a specific new genre comes out, and out they spew tons of ridiculous and heartless flicks one after another in hopes of gathering more cash. Brr.041: The Count of Monte Cristo [Kevin Reynolds 2002]Nothing is powerful like a good vengeance story. And it warmed my heart to see Richard Harris alive and well, even if for only a little bit. I really disliked James Caviezel who played Monte Cristo, but Guy Pierce was really great.042: Night at the Museum [Shawn Levy 2006]Sooo bad. Trying hard to be Jumanji and failing. But it's always fun to see that gang of actors having fun together. After all, they do have some pearls in their resumés.043: 300 [Zack Snyder 2006]A million times too pompous, huge and epic than I ever liked. I understand that is exactly the point, but for my liking, it was way over the top.044: Simpsons: The Movie [David Silverman 2007]Very funny. True to itself. Sarcastic. Loved it. What an awful ending. The Black Velvet Gown (1993) Music of the Heart (1999) Greed (1924) - Silent film. One of the best ever made. Film about greed and what it does to relationships.Ryan's Daughter (1970) Love Letters (1945) The Mayor of Casterbridge (2003) Goodnight Mr. Tom (1999) Babel (2006) - I liked this, interesting to see how the lives of people you don't know can affect you.Dragonwyck (1946) Atonement (2007) - I really liked this. This is my 2nd time seeing it. I didn't see the whole thing the first time.Night Nurse (1931) Thou Shalt Not: Sex, Sin and Censorship in Pre-Code Hollywood (2007) August Rush (2007) - This was OK, not as good as I would have hoped. Young boy searches for his birth parents.Dead Ringer (1964) Angels & Insects (1995) Goya's Ghosts (2007) - Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman star. Slow movie, but it had its moments. The Kite Runner (2007) - I was excited about this movie, but I enjoyed the book much more. I felt this movie dragged. The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) Caged (1950) - A young widow is sent to prision for accomplace to robbery. busy91 I'm No Angel (1933) - Mae West and Cary Grant film. Mae West is very annoying, she is so annoying, I couldn't enjoy Archibald!! The Forsyte Woman (1949) - An adaptation of the book "The Man of Property" by John Galsworthy. Starring Greer Garson and Errol Flynn. I was surprised I liked this as I don't like old hollywood period pieces, usually. But I liked this and it was in technicolor too. Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) - Harry Belefonte stars as a con who plans a job with 2 other cons (one who is a bigot). Not as good as some Potier stuff, pretty tame in comparison. The Graduate (1967) - This was funny, I never knew. I love Hoffman. Wives & Daughters (Volumes 1&2) (1999) - BBC period piece (which I love). Adapted from the book by Elizabeth Gaskell. The Kingdom (2007) - Urgh! Enough Iraq war movies already. Ladies in Lavender (2004) - I watched this because Joshua Bell played the score. It was a pretty decent little British drama. Luther (2003) - About Martin Luther and the rise of the Lutheran religion. Very interesting period piece. The Well (1951) - This is the shinning star movie of my week. The acting was pretty bad but the story was top notch. A young black girl vanishes and a white man is accused of her disapperance. The town goes into 'race riot' mode. We get to see human nature at its worst and then in the same breath, we get to see it at its finest. Excellent film, that you don't hear much about. Very relevant, even 50 years later. Awake (2007) - OK so Jessica Alba was very good in this, but the story. Cheesy, Corny, Dumb. Latter Days (2003) - A Mormon missonary discovers he is gay, falls in love and is ex-communicated. This is a true love story that will tug at your hearts. Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939) - The remake of the Sweedish version Intermezzo (1938) also starring Ingrid Bergman. This was her American debut. She wore absolutley no makeup in this film, not that you can tell because she is stunning. Leslie Howard co-stars in this love story about sacrifice. (comment on this) |

changeskat 013: American Gangster [Ridley Scott 2007]not really my cup of tea, this historical gangster drama, but it was good. 014: Jumper [Doug Liman 2008]worst. movie. ever. don't see it. oof. i've never seen worse acting and plot development in my life.015: The Mummy [Stephen Sommers 1999]trying hard to be indiana jones, cannot pull it off. but entertaining at times.016: Slither [James Gunn 2006]when i saw it, i thought absolutely nothing of it. just another lame horror movie, i thought. but as it turns out, after reading up on it, it is actually supposed to be a humoristic take on the famous horror movie clichés, which turned around my original impression. i'd actually see it again, just to change my perspective.017: Poseidon [Wolfgang Petersen 2006]concidering that i saw it on a bus between Chiang Mai and Chiang Khong in Thailand, all dubbed in Thai, i can't say that i can fairly judge this movie. however, even without english, it seemed like a half-hearted B-movie. 018: Hostage [Florent Emilio Siri 2005]a surprisingly catchy thriller, which i at first suspected to be some kind of Die Hard (as we walked in a little late). it turned out to be quite intense.019: Apocalypto [Mel Gibson 2006]when the movie started, i had seriously absolutely no idea what it was, who directed it, if it was old or new, if it was famous or a b-movie, i knew nothing. and i was very pleasantly surprised. or, i guess "pleasant" isn't exactly the right word to use here. it was extremely gory, as realistic as it gets. it was very hard and evil at times, and also very sad. ofcourse, it was also pompous and epic, just like mel gibson likes it. somehow, i really liked it (although it could be that i take an immediate liking to any movie that uses original language as opposed to heavily accented english).020: Knocked Up [Judd Apatow 2007]i think that hollywood movie history is slowly deteriorating and decomposing into very smelly crap in the last decade, because as far as i can see, this is as good as it gets (let me also point to Jumper, which i still cannot believe EVER made it out of someone's brain and onto a movie screen). however, if one just accepts that you're not gonna get more than this, it can be fairly entertaining. some good jokes, some interesting character developments. overall, i wouldn't pay to see it. but it's alright. busy91 Portrait of Jennie (1948) Another Thin Man (1939) Manhattan Melodrama (1934) There Will Be Blood (2007) - I HATED this movie. It was long and annyoing. The best part was when Paul Dano was on screen. I'm glad this didn't win best picture. Carlito's Way (1993) Miss Austen Regrets (2007) - A Masterpiece Theater TV Movie about Jane's Life. Pretty interesting, though I'm not sure how accurate. Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) - I liked "Elizabeth" better. This movie was about her relationship with Sir Walter Reiligh and the War with Spain.Restoration (1995) - I loved this. I love Robert Downey Jr., and this film is a British period piece as well. You put 2 of my favorite things together, how can I not like it?Only Angels Have Wings (1939) A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) - I did not like this. Downey Jr. was in this along with Rosario Dawson and Shia LeBouf, but even they couldn't save this film.Oceans Thirteen (2007) The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio (2005) Camille (1936) Children of the Damned (1963) - This is the sequel to "Village of the Dammed" (1960) which I thought was 10x better.Topper Takes a Trip (1938) My Favorite Wife (1940) Deliver Us From Evil (2006) - Didn't like this documentary about a Catholic priest who is/was a pedophile. No Man of Her Own (1932) Eastern Promises (2007) She Done Him Wrong (1933) - Early Cary Grant movie. He wasn't much in it, and the ending was corney, but it was a fun and short watch.Good Luck Chuck (2007) Bright Eyes (1934) Tootsie (1982) Becoming Jane (2007) - A Biopic about Jane Asten's life. The main points were there as was in "Miss Austen Regrets", but different liberities were taken with her love life in this version.Wives and Daughters (Volume 1) (1999) The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2006) Walk, Don't Run (1966) - Cary Gran't's last film. We finally get to hear his British accent, although by this time, it was very well mixed with his American one.The Spiral Staircase (1946) Love Affair (1939) In Old Chicago (1937) Across the Universe (2007) - I think every Beatles fan should see this movie. Even if you just like the Beatles music, you will like this. It is well done, well acted and not too much annoying musical type stuff going on. And if you like Bono, you must check out his American accent. (comment on this) |

12:53 pm - Finishing off January #28 - #38 |
busy91 #28 - #38 Of Human Bondage (1934) - Bette Davis classic. Bad footage, but great film. Also stars Leslie Howard. Chain Reaction (1996) - Keanu & Morgan Freeman star. Keanu is framed for a murder he didn't commit, and he has to simultaniously stop the bad guys from blowing up the city. No, Keanu can't act in this one either. I Love You Again (1940) - Powell & Loy comedy. Powell had amnesia for 9 years and turned into a bore. His wife wants to divorce him. That is until she realizes that the man she spent the last 9 years with is a totally different person. David and Lisa (1962) - David and Lisa are 2 disturbed people who live in a 'home' and eventually they learn to trust each other. Less Than Zero (1987)- REWATCH. Downey Jr., and Andrew McCarthy classic 80s film about 3 friends and the party scene. Mrs. Miniver (1942) - Greer Garson, Teresa Wright. A middle class family has to deal with the air raids and bombings of WWII. Saw IV (2007) - Pretty good 4th part. Nothing really new until the end. Rebecca (1940) - Olivier and Fontaine star. A woman marries a man she just met and goes to live in his mansion. She feels she has to compete with the ghost of his ex-wife, Rebecca. 1969 (1988) - Kiefer Sutherland, Winona Ryder and Downey Jr. 2 friends attempt to stay out of the military by enrolling in college, but when one of them is kicked out, they go to lengths to avoid the draft board. Mansfield Park - Masterpiece Theater (2007) - Did not like this one as much as the 1999 version, but it was not bad. Soylent Green (1973) - New York City in 2022 is scary. Glad it is not going to happen. The only food to eat is this soy/lentil concoction. This sci-fi film stars Charlton Heston. (3 comments | comment on this) |

busy91 16. Penny Serenade (1941) - Early Cary Grant film with Irene Dunne. A woman loses her unborn child in an earthquake and the couple adopts and difficulties ensue. 17. The Gods Must Be Crazy I (1980) - Funny as hell. Very unique for its day. 18. The Gods Must Be Crazy II (1989) - Funny, not as funny as the original but still entertaining.19. Blue Harvest: Family Guy (2007) - If you are a Family Guy fan, you've got to watch this. Same exact cartoon as the "Robot Chicken" Star Wars, but with the Family Guy cast. 20. Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) - Cagney film about 2 friends who as teens were on the wrong side of the track. They run from the law, one gets caught, the other one escapes. The one that was caught goes to reform school and becomes a gangster, the one who got away becomes a priest. 21. Father Goose (1964) - Later Cary film. During WWII a washed up loner is asked to monitor Japanese aircrafts from a deserted island. There he finds a teacher and several girls from a school. Typical funny Cary Grant fair. 22. Flushed Away (2006) - The animated British tale of rats who live in the sewer. 23. Smokin' Aces (2007) - Bounty hunters are after Aces. Pretty violent. 24. Game 6 (2005) - Michael Keaton is a playwrite who worries about how the hottest play reviewer is going to review his play. Pretty boring film with no resolution. Robert Downey Jr. is the play reviewer and of course he is brill. 25. The Painted Veil (1934) - Greta Garbo is a woman who is in a loveless marriage and has an affair. Her husband finds out and takes her to China during the Cholera epidemic. 26. Zodiac (2007) - About the Zodiac Killer. 27. Northanger Abbey - Masterpiece Theater (2007) - Jane Austen film. Pretty awesome. (comment on this) |

changeskat 007: Garden State [Zach Braff 2004]Many people have said so many good things about this movie and in some ways, I could see the point. I wasn't very moved by it, however. It was good, but I didn't connect to it. Maybe it requires a certain state of mind. Anyhow, it was very pleasant to see Zach Braff being serious (although a few smart comments did make their way), and Natalie Portman is always a pleasure. Also, I got a strange liking to Michael Weston. All in all a very individual, interesting and calm movie. 008: Star Wars Episode II [George Lucas 2002]Pretty famous, no need for explanation ;)009: Clone Wars (TV) [Genndy Tartakovsky 2003]For fans, a pretty necessary tool to understand the full story of the three first episodes. For other people, not so much. XD010: Star Wars Episode III [George Lucas 2005]Same as Ep. II, except for one thing- last time I saw it, was in the movies in 2005. When I saw it now, I was sincerely surprised at the amazing quality of the CGI. True, most objective people say that CGI is the only strength of the movies, but I strongly disagree. 011: Memoirs of a Geisha [Rob Marshall 2005]Now, I haven't read the book. But I have studied Japanese history, religion, literature and language, read countless books- both literature and academical material, my boyfriend is Japanese and I live in Japan. So, like most doctors feel about doctor's shows or movies, I just wasn't convinced at all. First of all, I have a problem with all movies, ALL movies that are set in country X, spoken in English/said country's heavy accent. now why on EARTH would these people speak English? let alone speak with a heavy accent? I cannot for the life of me understand how that would make any sense, ever. Do Americans really have that huge of a problem with subtitles? Second of all, for some reason I just feel very strange about Korean and Chinese actors playing Japanese, which makes a big difference to me.But ofcourse, it was a very moving story, and quite true historically. So basically, I should probably read it, since I have problems with the production rather than content. 012: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events [Brad Silberling 2004]I have never read Lemony Snicket's books either, but I feel I probably should read them after seing this- it was very cute, very imaginative, although I have no basis for comparison. I would say that the children's acting was very so-so, but the adults were amazing pretty much all of the time. It was a little pointless, but very cute and pretty. =P (comment on this) |

10:13 am - Movies #9 - 15 |
busy91 Cruising (1980) - This is an old Al Pacino movie. He is an undercover cop trying to track down a murderer of gay men. Nice twist and the end. 3:10 to Yuma (2007) - I saw the original last year. This one was much better. Better acting, more action. The Heartbreak Kid - Ben Stiller funny from last year. Charade - Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn star in this Mod 1963 Comedy Suspense Movie. Both actors were stellar. Highly recommend this movie. Halloween (2007) - I don't know, a lot of people don't like Rob Zombie movies, but I think they are pretty good. Sunshine - A recent sci-fi thriller starring Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh (who both don their American Accents). Scientest are trying to save the sun. It was decent. Persuasion - Masterpiece Theater (2007) - PBS is having the complete Jane Austin on Masterpiece Theater. I caught this version of the book, very much like the one from 1995 (from Masterpiece Theater). It is beyond me why they made another version ?? The 1995 one was just great. Next week is Northanger Abbey for those who enjoy Austin Movies. (comment on this) |

busy91 Movies #1-8 1. The Bicycle Thief - 1949 Italian Classic. A man loses his bicycle and has to trek all over Italy to find it, it really isn't as boring as it sounds. 3/5 stars. 2. I Am Legend - Will Smith stars. It was OK, too much hype. 3/5 stars. 3. The Gingerbread Man - Yes I watched it for Downey Jr. I think it was from a Grisham book, it was OK. 3/5 stars. 4. The Devil's Rejects - Rob Zombie Directed. Sequal to House of 10,000 Corpses or some other crap like that. However, I thought this was pretty good. Nice cinematography, and loved the soundtrack. 4/5 stars. 5. One Hour Photo - This could have been better. Robin Williams is a lonely man who fantasizes about having a family. He goes to great lengths to make this happen. 3/5 stars. 6. Fantastic Voyage - 1966 Sci Fi diddy. Scientest shrink down and travel through a human body in order to perform a life saving operation. 3/5 stars 7. Amazing Grace - Film about the end to the British Slave trade. If you like British history and period pieces, you are going to love this one. Also very educational. 4/5 stars. 8. War - Jet Li stars. If Jet had kicked more butt, I would have enjoyed it more. 3.5/5 (comment on this) |

changeskat 004: Majo no takkyûbin [Hayao Miyazaki 1989] English title: Kiki's Delivery Service. A very, very cute movie that I'm very sure every Japanese girl my age simply loves and adores. Ofcourse, not limited to girls, boys too love this movie (I was promptly pushed to watch it by my own boyfriend, for instance). It is very straightforward, easy-going feel-good movie with no particular political messages or hardships. I loved it. My children shall grow up with this stuff, no doubt about it.005: Kaze no tani no Naushika [Hayao Miyazaki 1984] English title: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds. Fabulous movie, with a far stronger political message than the latter. Once more, a very strong female character that one cannot help but admire fully (I was told, by the way, that the fact that Miyazaki's female heroes are not sexy in any way, are the sole reason why these movies are concidered to be art and why people watching them are not otaku - nerds. See f.ex. "Ghost in the Shell" for opposite reference). I strongly recommend this movie. As a bonus, there is an awesome 80's style soundtrack.006: Ratatoille [Brad Bird 2007]Just as expected: very funny, very fast and full of reality holes- and who cares, it's great entertainment! I don't particularly feel like criticizing the parts I wasn't so pleased with, since it was actually a movie that sometimes made me laugh out loud and that truly hasn't happened lately. Totally recommended for downloading or renting once. (comment on this) |

7:57 pm - I Didn't Make It... |
awwunicorns My final films for this year:72. Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - I really like how Tim Burton films movies. He's got a great style. Otherwise, this film was only o.k. Loved Depp & Bonham-Carter, but would have loved them more had this not been a musical. I get that this is supposed to be a musical & singing about eating people is pretty cool (?), but I'd love to see this outside of the musical realm. 73. Juno - Click the link for my long-ish post, but shortly, I loved this film. It was smart & witty, fun & funny, sad & (life-)scary. The acting was great. I hope the screenwriter, Diablo Cody, gets an Oscar nom. She deserves it.74. Elf - My annual holiday viewing. I love this film. It's my favorite "Christmas" movie. 75. Pictures of Hollis Woods - Hallmark Hall of Fame film. It's been a while since I read the book, so I don't remember it well enough to compare, but the film was good. It was a tear-jearker.76. Adventures in Babysitting - "Don't F*CK with the Babysitter!" Love that line. Great film. Very non-realistic, but fun nonetheless. I've seen this movie too many times to count. I finally asked for it on DVD & got it for Christmas....I started anew again today. We'll see where the 2008 list takes me. (2 comments | comment on this) |
3:38 pm - 212 to 224 |
silent_orchid My last post of movies from 2007. I made it to 224! I'm not sure yet if I'll be listing my 2008 movies. If anyone is interested, I plan on writing a short zine about my year of movies, with lists, longer reviews, and a few little essays/articles about films.212. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (MST3K) - One of the strangest Christmas movies I've seen, but not THE strangest...that would be...213. Santa Clause (MST3K) - A Mexican kids movie from 1959 where Santa must save some kids (and their souls!) from a devil named Pitch (yes, Santa and Satan are enemies...) Santa doesn't have elves, just a bunch of "It's a Small World" kids. And his reindeer are giant wind up toys! Oh, and Santa is friends with Merlin...214. The Painted Hills (MST3K) - Lassie! Snausages?!?215. A Muppet Family Christmas - Made for TV in 1987. My sister and I watch this every Christmas (we have our old tape with all of the cute 80s commercials!) I love it!216. The Violent Years (MST3K) - Written (but not directed by) Ed Wood. 217. Code Name: Diamond Head (MST3K) - Pilot movie for a failed tv series (A Quinn Martin production) about spies in Hawaii. Silly 70s fun!218. The Nightmare Before Christmas - Another Christmas classic!219. Sweeney Todd - Wow! I love it! Bloody good fun ;)220. A Christmas Story - One of my favorite Christmas movies221. Terror from the Year 5000 (MST3K) - Odd scifi about a time machine sort of thing, and a girl from the year 5000 where everything is radioactive and there are lots of mutants! Really weird...222. Transformers Animated Special - Feature length preview of the new Transformers cartoon. Pretty cool!223. Robot Monster (MST3K) - Goofy scifi, with the dumbest monster costume ever! A gorilla suit with a space helmet!224. Gamera VS Zigra (MST3K) - Gamera movies are always fun (how can a giant nuclear flying turtle not be?!) (comment on this) |
