The linkages between the space-time variability of observed clouds, rainfall, large-circulation patterns and topography in northern India and the Himalayas were investigated using remote sensing data. The research purpose was to test the hypothesis that cloudiness patterns are dynamic tracers of rainstorms, and therefore their temporal and spatial evolution can be used as a proxy of the spatial and temporal organization of precipitation and precipitation processes in the Himalayan range during the monsoon. The results suggest that the space-time distribution of precipitation, the spatial variability of the diurnal cycle of convective activity, and the terrain (landform and altitudinal gradients) are intertwined at spatial scales ranging from the order of a few kms (1-5 km) up to the continental-scale. Furthermore, this relationship is equally strong in the time domain with respect to the onset and intra-seasonal variability of the monsoon. Infrared and microwave imagery of cloud fields were analyzed to characterize the spatial and temporal evolution of mesoscale convective weather systems and short-lived convection in Northern India, the Himalayan range, and in the Tibetan Plateau during three monsoon seasons (1999, 2000 and 2001). The life cycle of convective systems suggests landform and orographic controls consistent with a convergence zone constrained to the valley of the Ganges and the Himalayan range, bounded in the west by the Aravalli range and the Garhwal mountains and in the East by the Khasi Hills and the Bay of Bengal, which we call the Northern India Convergence Zone (NICZ). The NICZ exhibits strong nighttime activity along the south-facing slopes of the Himalayan range, which is characterized by the development of shortlived convection (1-3 h) aligned with protruding ridges between 1:00 and 3:00 AM. The intra-annual and inter-annual variability of convective activity in the NICZ were assessed with respect to large-scale synoptic conditions, monsoon activity in the Bay of Bengal, and the modulating role of orography. a b s t r a c t Available online xxxx Connectivity analysis of fMRI data requires correct specification of regions-of-interest (ROIs). Selection of ROIs based on outcomes of a GLM analysis may be hindered by conservativeness of the multiple comparison correction, while selection based on brain anatomy may be biased due to inconsistent structure-to-function mapping. To alleviate these problems we propose a method to define functional ROIs without the need for a stringent multiple comparison correction. We extend a flexible framework for fMRI analysis (Activated Region Fitting, ) to connectivity analysis of fMRI data. This method describes an entire fMRI data volume by regions of activation defined by a limited number of parameters. Therefore a less stringent multiple comparison procedure is required. The regions of activation from this analysis can be directly used to estimate functional connectivity. Simulations show that Activated Region Fitting can recover the connectivity of brain regions. An application to real data of a Go/No-Go experiment highlights the advantages of the method.

In order to investigate the potential role of vegetation changes in megafaunal extinctions during the later part of the last glacial stage and early Holocene (42e10 ka BP), the palaeovegetation of northern Eurasia and Alaska was simulated using the LPJ-GUESS dynamic vegetation model. Palaeoclimatic driving data were derived from simulations made for 22 time slices using the Hadley Centre Unified Model. Modelled annual net primary productivity (aNPP) of a series of plant functional types (PFTs) is mapped for selected time slices and summarised for major geographical regions for all time slices. Strong canonical correlations are demonstrated between model outputs and pollen data compiled for the same period and region. Simulated aNPP values, especially for tree PFTs and for a mesophilous herb PFT, provide evidence of the structure and productivity of last glacial vegetation. The mesophilous herb PFT aNPP is higher in many areas during the glacial than at present or during the early Holocene. Glacial stage vegetation, whilst open and largely treeless in much of Europe, thus had a higher capacity to support large vertebrate herbivore populations than did early Holocene vegetation. A marked and rapid decrease in aNPP of mesophilous herbs began shortly after the Last Glacial Maximum, especially in western Eurasia. This is likely implicated in extinction of several large herbivorous mammals during the latter part of the glacial stage and the transition to the Holocene.

This article draws upon a reader-response and canonical-hermeneutical perspective in order to analyze the manner in which 2 Sam 22 and Ps 18 are embedded in their respective literary contexts. Psalm 18’s superscription functions both to guide the interpretation of the following psalm as well as evoke its “Doppelgänger” in 2 Sam 22 (and “behind” it the Song of Moses in Deut 32,1-43). It not only contains a prayer articulated in a situation of distress, as a song of thanksgiving it also retrospectively witnesses to divine acts of salvation that have an abiding validity. This analysis demonstrates that the intertextual reading of biblical texts as a significant moment of the “canon” is not a secondary imposition upon these texts from the outside.

This study examined grade-and achievement-level differences in 4th-, 7th-, and lOth-grade students' control-related beliefs and relations between students' beliefs and their reading and writing achievement. MANOVA results indicated grade-and achievement-level differences in self-efficacy, causal attribution, and outcome expectancy beliefs but no interaction between grade and achievement level. Canonical correlations identified a single dimension linking students' beliefs to achievement in both reading and writing. Quadratic relations to achievement were found for outcome expectancy and intelligence attributions. As grade increased, beliefs for reading were more highly related to comprehension skill relative to component skills, whereas beliefs for writing were more highly related to component skills relative to communication skills. At all achievement levels, a similar pattern of beliefs was related to achievement.

Economists usually assume that the private ethical system of individuals is Utilitarian. However, one finds a much broader range of ethical positions in the environmental ethics literature. Moreover, environmental policy debates seem to elicit alternative ethical systems. It would therefore seem prudent to increase our understanding of the role played by alternative environmental ethical systems. In this study we follow some descriptive ethical studies in examining the empirical ethical positions of people based on a broad cross section of the American public. We review some taxonomic literature in environmental ethics and develop a conceptual model of the formation of environmental values. We then use canonical correlation to investigate the existence of environmental values and their relationship to childhood experience. We find four ethical systems linked to four different "types" of people. One of the ethical systems is decidedly spiritual and one seems rather ill-defined or indifferent towards nature. The other two systems show anthropocentric values, one more conservation minded, one more use minded.

We present a general method using kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis to learn a semantic representation to web images and their associated text. The semantic space provides a common representation and enables a comparison between the text and images. In the experiments we look at two approaches of retrieving images based only on their content from a text query. We compare the approaches against a standard cross-representation retrieval technique known as the Generalised Vector Space Model.

We examined the co-occurrence of and risk factors for adolescent boys' and girls' self-reported use of psychologically, physically, and sexually abusive behaviours in their dating relationships. The participants were 324 boys and 309 girls in grades 7, 9, or 11 who completed surveys at school. Descriptive analyses showed that 19% of boys and 26% of girls reported having used two or more forms of dating violence. One third of students in grade 7 had already used at least one form of aggressive behaviour in this context.

This report presents reliability, validity and sensitivity indices for the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale. Factor analysis of MI treatment sessions coded with the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) was used to derive 10 elements of MI practice, forming the MITI. Canonical correlation revealed that the MITI captured 59% of the variability in the MISC. Reliability estimates for the MITI were derived using three masked, independent coders. Intra-class coefficients ranged from .5 to .9 and were generally in the good to excellent range. Comparison of MITI scores before and after MI workshops indicate good sensitivity for detecting improvement in clinical practice as result of training. Implications for the use of this instrument in research and supervision are discussed. D

A longitudinal study of 52 married couples is reported. A principal components analysis was used to select nine Time 1 variables based on a couple s behavior during an oral history interview. These variables were able to significantly predict which couples would separate or divorce or remain intact upon 3-year follow-up. A discriminant function analysis showed that the oral history variables could predict divorce or marital stability with approximately 94% accuracy. The oral history variables also correlated in clear ways with Time I marital interaction in both problem solving and affect, the couple's physiological reactivity during marital interaction, as well as Time 1 and Time 2 marital satisfaction. Despite the correlation of oral history variables with Time 1 marital satisfaction, in a discriminant function analysis, Time 1 marital satisfaction variables alone resulted in a nonsignificant canonical correlation coefficient in the prediction of divorce.

The Multidimensional Scale of Independent Functioning (MSIF) is a new instrument for rating functional disability in psychiatric outpatients. The MSIF differs from other disability rating scales by providing discrete ratings of (1) role responsibility, (2) presence and level of support, and (3) performance quality. The MSIF, which consists of a semistructured interview and detailed rating anchors, was validated in 114 psychiatric outpatients. The instrument had good criterion, discriminative, interrater, and construct validity. Correlations between comparable ratings on the Social Adjustment Scale U (SAS II) ranged from 0.78 to 0.86. Nevertheless, redundancy analysis using canonical correlation demonstrated that, although the two instruments overlap, the MSIF contains information that is not contained in the SAS IL Furthermore, there was only modest shared variance with conceptually non-overlapping subscales in the SAS IL Interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients) ranged from 0.74 to 1.00 for global and subscale scores. MSIF subscales performed as expected with respect to external validators such as hours of employment, earned income, supported versus nonsupported employment and housing, and mainstream versus nonmainstream educational status. MSIF global ratings were modestly correlated with IQ and psychopathology ratings, consistent with reports in the literature. Construct validity, estimated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, was 0.72. The MSIF is a promising new instrument designed to circumvent several limitations with existing functional outcome instruments for longitudinal studies, intervention research, and services research.

Purpose -To examine the contentious relationship between brand image and brand personality in the context of tourism destinations. Design/methodology/approach -The paper reviews the literature on brand (destination) image, brand (destination) personality and identifies examples of definitional inconsistencies and instances where the terms brand image and brand personality are used interchangeably. Two studies were carried out to investigate the relationship between the two constructs. Data were analysed using canonical correlation. Findings -Results indicate that destination image and destination personality are related concepts. Canonical correlation analyses reveal that the emotional component of destination image captures the majority of variance on destination personality dimensions. Research limitations/implications -Academics must pay particular attention at distinguishing between brand image and brand personality, since, failure to do so, will hinder research progress and result in poor conceptual developments. Practical implications -Destination marketers can focus on the commonality between destination image and destination personality in order to communicate unique destination features and to influence tourist behavior. Originality/value -This paper fills a gap in the generic branding literature by adopting an empirical stance at delineating the relationship between brand image and brand personality in the context of tourism destinations.

A canonical critical approach to a canonical author was defined by Harold Bloom as a combination of two critical standpoints. One aspect concerns the critic’s ability to solve formal and phenomenological issues which arise in a work of art. The other one refers to the critic’s capacity of making value judgments on literary works on moral grounds. My preferred approach
in this presentation is of ‘the compare and contrast’ type, as critics from two different cultural paradigms (late Neoclassicism and early Romanticism) are weighed against each other. While
Johnson is concerned with the issue of the three unities and with the moral dimension of Shakespeare’s plays, Coleridge attempts a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s original intention and builds on the hypothesis that as concerns poetry pleasure precedes truth. The main aim of this article is bringing together two critics having different personalities, united by a common interest: taking Shakespeare away from accessibly appreciatively-naïve criticism and promoting a truly critical approach to the author. Their views are also canonical as they understood and incorporated two of Shakespeare’s registers that are the sage discourse and the passionate language of nature. Apart from this, the two critics managed, I think, successfully, to build the basis of a tradition in literary criticism. Since the conference’s theme is labeled Genres and Historicity: Text, Cotext, Context, I thought it would be interesting to refer to the above mentioned aspects which mainly focus on criticism as an emerging genre.

A new method of feature extraction, based on feature fusion, is proposed in this paper according to the idea of canonical correlation analysis (CCA). At first, the theory framework of CCA used in pattern recognition and its reasonable description are discussed. The process can be explained as follows: extract two groups of feature vectors with the same pattern; establish the correlation criterion function between the two groups of feature vectors; and extract their canonical correlation features to form effective discriminant vector for recognition. Then, the problem of canonical projection vectors is solved when two total scatter matrixes are singular, such that it fits for the case of high-dimensional space and small sample size, in this sense, the applicable range of CCA is extended. At last, the inherent essence of this method used in recognition is analyzed further in theory. Experimental results on Concordia University CENPARMI database of handwritten Arabic numerals and Yale face database show that recognition rate is far higher than that of the algorithm adopting single feature or the existing fusion algorithm.

Banks generally mobilize resources in the form of deposits and lend them as loans and advances. The resources mobilized by the banks are generally short-term in nature and the deployments of funds are medium and long-term, hence there is always a mismatch between the maturity and repayment of funds in banks. The mismatch risk the banks due to the incurrent risks involved in the business mechanisms and leads to liquidity crunch and loss of margins at times. There are many risks involving the banking business -such as credit risk, liquidity risk, interest rate risk, operational risk, exchange risk, and regulatory risk. However, the major risks faced by the banks are liquidity risk and interest rate risk. A systematic management of assets and liability of the banks help the banks to address these risks effectively and leads the banks towards a sustainable growth. For this purpose, the sample of three Old & New generation Private sector Banks was taken and the Canonical correlation technique has been applied to capture the predictor variables, liability and predictive variables assets in these banks. The finding of the paper reveals that except ICICI banks, all other banks are in safer zone and mostly the predictor variables are long-term and the predictive variables are also long-term, and short-term in nature.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to provide experimental evidence supporting the view that internal service quality has a direct effect on external service quality. Design/methodology/approach -The study focuses on the restaurant industry in Greece. Waiters are considered as internal customers and kitchen personnel as internal suppliers. Inferential analysis included factor analysis on individual waiter and customer data as well as canonical correlation analysis on a restaurant level. Findings -Factor analysis of external service quality revealed six factors including product, organizational image, safety and choice, empathy, reliability as well as responsiveness. Internal service quality factors, additional to those found in external service quality research, included professionalism and internet. Canonical correlation revealed that the internal service quality dimensions of safety, reliability and internet exert a direct positive influence on the external service quality dimensions of organizational image, empathy and responsiveness. Originality/value -The paper shows that service firms should focus on internal service quality in order to improve external service quality.

The present study is an effort to find out the response of the people of Darjeeling in the area of health insurance. As firstly, this study examines the respondents who are aware or not aware about health insurance as well as various sources of awareness; secondly, those who are aware have subscribed for it or not; thirdly, those who have not subscribed what are the reasons behind the same; and lastly are they willing to join and pay for it? If yes then what would be the possible amount? The study was conducted in some selected villages in Darjeeling district and 200 questionnaires were got filled from randomly selected general people. The results shown low level of awareness and willingness to join and pay for health insurance scheme.

A dynamical downscaling of the 6-hourly 1948-2006 NCEP/NCAR re-analyses for the subarctic region of the North Atlantic has been used to derive a climatology of polar lows by means of a tracking algorithm based on the simulated bandpass filtered MSLP-fields. This climatology is consistent with the limited observational evidence in terms of frequency and spatial distribution. The climatology exhibits strong year-to-year variability but weak decadal variability and a negligible trend. A Canonical Correlation Analysis describes the conditioning of the formation of polar lows by characteristic meridional seasonal mean flow regimes, which favor cold air outbreaks and upper air troughs.

This contribution considers in a canon-hermeneutical perspective the dual form of the royal Davidic song of thanksgiving in 2 Sam 22 / Ps 18. The focus is not considerations regarding its origin but rather an attempt to trace the trail of a reader who moves from 2 Sam to Ps 18 canon-theologically. As part of a lectio continua et (proto)canonica, the influence of 2 Sam 22 is acknowledged to be present already in the “foreground” of Ps 18 (= 2 Sam 22), namely in the range of Psalms 2-17, and its effect on the meaning of these psalms is considered. This hermeneutical horizon, which is based especially on the motif complex of seeking refuge in YHWH, is constructed in the transition from Ps 2 to 3 in the minds of those who have an intimate knowledge of Scripture and who meditate on and pray from the psalms. In the psalms following Ps 3, the echoes are indeed less strong, but since text signals resurface from time to time, 2 Sam 22 is kept alive as an interpretive horizon. In Psalm 17, just before the "drawing in" of the song of thanksgiving from 2 Sam 22 as Psalm 18, it is amplified again. The doubling of the earlier text in the form of Ps 18 portrays this royal Davidic song of thanksgiving as being exceptionally important. In the concluding part of the contribution, some implications of this significance are outlined for the interpretation of the Psalter.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of perceived motivational climate to cohesion and collective efficacy in elite female teams. A total of 124 basketball and handball athletes completed two season measures (T1, T2). Relationships were examined at an individual level both statically and across time. Canonical correlations revealed that a combination of high perceptions of an ego-involving but low perceptions of a task-involving climate were associated with low perceptions of task cohesion at Time 1. High perceptions of a task-involving but low perceptions of an ego-involving climate were associated with higher perceptions of task cohesion and collective efficacy at Time 2. Moreover, low perceptions of an ego-involving and moderately low perceptions of a task-involving climate were associated with high perceptions of social cohesion at Time 2. In a preliminary hermeneutic deliberation, the meaning of the Psalter as a book and the importance of perceiving the individual psalms in sequence (lectio continua) is established. The Davidic Psalter furthermore contains a reception vector “back” to the historical narratives in the books of Samuel. In addition to details provided in the psalm headings, the duplicated transmission of the royal Davidic song of thanksgiving, 2 Sam 22 // Ps 18, forms an integral part of this reception connection. In addition to studies that have investigated the textual “prelude” of Ps 18, this article addresses the “postlude” (Ps 19-150). For this purpose, recurrences of Gattung (royal psalms) and of concepts and motifs (refuge, rescue, theo¬phany, etc.) are worked out in view of Ps 18. These are found predominantly in the immediate context (Ps 19-21); in a number of (sapiential) psalms in the first Davidic Psalter; at the end of Books II and III (Ps 71-72; 89); and at the beginning and towards the end of Books IV-V (Ps 91; 94 and especially 144). In reading through the book, one finds a shift in emphasis towards demilitarization, theologizing and an increased stress on piety.

This study explored the extent to which alexithymia can be seen as a dissociative phenomenon, examining three facets of dissociation in relationship to the five dimensions of alexithymia. The dissociative facets were: pathological psychoform dissociation (amnesia and derealization/depersonalization), non-pathological psychoform dissociation (absorption) and somatoform dissociation. The alexithymia facets were: difficulties emotionalizing, fantasizing, identifying, verbalizing and analyzing emotions. Various self-report measures were used including the latest developed measure of alexithymia, the Bermond Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ). Canonical correlation results indicated that somatoform dissociation was the strongest predictor of alexithymia. For younger males, somatoform dissociation was directly related to all facets of alexithymia except for fantasizing. Males with somatoform dissociation, irrespective of age, appeared to have the highest difficulties emotionalizing and identifying emotions. Whilst somatoform and pathological psychoform dissociation were related to difficulties identifying emotions for younger females, no type of dissociation directly influenced the development of any alexithymia dimension for women.

Despite the growing interest in environmental management practices (EMPs), research to date has typically analyzed a limited range of these practices and used traditional data sources. In contrast, this paper uses an innovative data source to explore EMPs. We use a more comprehensive set of the practices than prior works in order to test relationships between EMPs and firm performance. The data used in this study comprised environmental and business performance data from 45 corporate reports. Content analysis is used to gather the data and canonical correlation is used for analysis in a two-step process in order to explore the relationships between EMPs and performance measures. Results support previously posited relationships based on traditional data and indicate that EMPs are associated with firm performance. #

It has been purported that univariate analyses may be too simplistic when studying correlates of religiosity and spirituality . Consequently, the current study evaluated the relationships between religiosity, spirituality, and personality at both the univariate and multivariate levels. Our results suggest strong relationships between these constructs at both levels. At the univariate level, all religiosity and spirituality variables, excluding the Extrinsic orientation, demonstrated significant associations with the Big Five. However, at the multivariate level, the Extrinsic orientation, in conjunction with the Quest orientation and the Intrinsic orientation, demonstrated a significant association with the Big Five. These findings support the supposition that religious and spiritual constructs ought to be examined at a multivariate level and further explicates the nature of religious and spiritual constructs by grounding them within a comprehensive taxonomy of personality.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between, multidimensional competitive trait anxiety (cognitive and somatic anxiety), trait cognitive threat appraisal, and coping styles. Five-hundred and fifty male and female athletes of several individual and team sports, between the ages of 15 and 35 (M ¼ 19.8 + 4.5), completed the translated and adapted versions of the Sport Anxiety Scale and of the Brief COPE, as well as the Cognitive Appraisal Scale in Sport Competition -Threat Perception. Pearson and Canonical correlations showed that higher levels of trait cognitive anxiety and threat appraisal were positively related to emotion-focused and avoidance coping and inversely related to problem-focused coping. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of individual differences in trait anxiety and threat appraisals, regarding athletes' coping styles.

A total of 2000 seeds were collected in Sudanian and Guinean climate zones of Africa and their length, width, thickness, weight and color were recorded. A hierarchical classification and canonical discriminant analysis were applied to the above traits of seeds from the different climatic zones. An analysis of variance with repeated measures was applied to seeds morphotypes identified by the hierarchical classification to test for the effect of these morphotypes on seed germination, seedling and plant growth. Hierarchical classification helped to identify four seed morphotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis performed on these morphotypes revealed highly significant differences. Morphotypes 1 and 3 comprised green seeds mainly from the Sudanian zone while morphotypes 2 and 4 gathered grey seeds mainly from Guinean zone. Morphotype 3 had the longest seeds while the shortest seeds were from morphotype 1. The heaviest seeds were found in morphotype 4 whereas the lightest ones were from morphotype 1. Seeds of morphotype 4 were the thickest and widest, while the slimmest and most narrow ones were grouped in morphotype 1. Morphotype 3, consisting of large green seeds mainly from Sudanian zone, was superior in terms of seedling and plant growth among all morphotypes and should be the best choice for planting purposes of the species.

The purpose of this research is to determine if there is any relationship between employee creativity and job-related motivators, using a case study of hotel employees in Hong Kong. From a sample of 983 employees, canonical correlation indicated there is a relationship between creativity and job-related motivators. Furthermore, the risk-taking dimension under creativity was found to be more correlated to the intrinsic job-related motivators. Intrinsic job-related motivators which include opportunity for advancement and development, loyalty to employees, appreciation and praise of work done, feelings of being involved, sympathetic help with personal problems and interesting work, are found to encourage the hotel employees' risk-taking behavior. A ''See-Saw'' model is presented to show the relationship between the two opposing sides: intrinsic motivators and extrinsic motivators versus creativity and risk-taking factors.

was administered as a measure of general intelligence. Impulsivity scores (Zi) of were used to analyze reflexivity-impulsivity and SATO. The results obtained indicate that (a) four performance groups can be identified: Fast-accurate, Slowinaccurate, Impulsive, and Reflexive. The first two groups solve the task as a function of a competence variable and the last two as a function of a personality variable; (b) performance differences should be attributed to SATO; (c) SATO differs depending on sex and intelligence level.

This study investigated the extent to which children's negative information processing biases are pervasive across the cognitive modalities of attention, judgment, and memory and, further, whether such biases are specifically associated with anxiety, depression, and/or aggression. 133 children between the ages of 8 and 14 years were assessed on an attention allocation task, a vignette interpretation measure, and a memory recall task. Children also completed anxiety and depression inventories, and were rated by teachers on a measure of aggression. Overall the results suggested a predominantly pervasive negative bias associated with childhood psychopathology, with some evidence of specificity. The canonical correlation analyses indicated that high levels of anxiety, depression, and aggression were associated with biases: attention to negative information, interpretation of ambiguous situations as negative, and preferential recall of negative words. Above this general bias, anxiety displayed a specific association with attention to negative information in the univariate analyses.
