This paper describes how the CAGIS environment can be used to manage work-processes, cooperative processes, and how to share and control information in a distributed, heterogeneous environment. We have used a conference organising process as a scenario and applied our CAGIS environment on this process. The CAGIS environment consists of three main parts: a document management system, a process management system, and a transaction management system. Keywords: Web-based software engineering, Internet computing: JAVA, XML, Intelligent agent software, Database systems, Document modelling, Process modelling, Transaction modelling. 1 Introduction After the introduction of the Internet, more and more projects are taking place in heterogeneous environments where both people, information and working processes are distributed. Work is often dynamic and cooperative and involves multiple actors with different kinds of needs. In these settings there is a need to help people coordinate their ...

This paper will discuss the future use of the dwelling as a place for cooperative work. It is our opinion that the development of the communication technologies and the architectural design has to be treated in parallel when we discuss new forms of living and work habits. Our analysis is built on a theoretical framework that is reflected through earlier experiences in IT technology in domestic environments as well as field studies of computer-mediated communication. By taking into consideration both architectural and communication technology issues we have developed a framework of how these two areas could fruitfully meet in new design concepts. Some of these concepts are now being used in on-going projects where new forms of communication in domestic environments are studied.

This study is part of an ongoing comparative study of various types of open software communities including both free and open source software projects. This study examines how the organizational cultural beliefs and values of a free software virtual organization influence software development processes. It provides examples that illustrate the importance of personal motivation and a sense of working as a team in the perpetuation of a virtual work community. It presents the world of the GNUenterprise.org project as a virtual organizational culture that embodies the beliefs of free software and freedom of choice, and the values of community building and cooperative work. A close study of this project shows how these beliefs and values are manifested in software development methods, artifacts, and tool choice, as well as how dispersed developers cooperate and resolve conflict in a virtual community. Data collection includes the content analysis of Internet Relay Chat archives; kernel c...

Object Lens allows unsophisticated computer users to create their own cooperative work applications using a set of simple, but powerful, building blocks. By defining and modifying templates for various semistructured objects, users can represent information about people, tasks, products, messages, and many other kinds of information in a form that can be processed intelligently by both people and their computers. By collecting these objects in customizable folders, users can create their own displays which summarize selected information from the objects in table or tree formats. Finally, by creating semiautonomous agents, users can specify rules for automatically processing this information in different ways at different times. The combination of these primitives provides a single consistent interface that integrates facilities for object-oriented databases, hypertext, electronic messaging, and rule-based intelligent agents. To illustrate the power of this combined approach, we desc...

Knowledge is a critical resource but we still do not have many new ideas on how to manage it. Most (online) knowledge is currently kept in conventional documents that are hard to structure, classify, browse, search, and even find. Organizations struggle with masses of such documents in hundreds of formats. Classical AI has largely ignored this real and serious problem, and while information retrieval research has tackled some of the problems, it is totally at odds with how AI tries to deal with knowledge problems. Cooperative work systems such as the Web and Lotus Notes are beginning to tackle that aspect. Database systems can contribute much of the required functionality. Hence we seek to integrate functionality and ideas from these sources. This paper describes an attack on the knowledge management problem by introducing a new hybrid notion of document cum knowledge base. We also discuss IKARUS, our experimental testbed.

Technologies modify the way to face the challenges of learning by widening our biological capacities. This use of technologies as mindtools, cognitive reinforcers, activators of psychological functions, can determine the turning point to consider its unavoidable incorporation into interdisciplinary working processes, problem resolutions and shared building of knowledge. Training of experts to face real cases compels to reach competences such as learning to learn; learning environments must not only make transformative learning processes easier, but also facilitate learning in cooperation and cognitive flexibility to analyze the cases from different points of view. The use of information and communication technologies and specifically mind tools such as concept maps and database, can help to the achievement of expert learning. The investigation made with a sample of 63 students and speech therapists, psychology and pedagogy professionals is presented. They have to solve 11 real cases...

Decision Support Systems (DSSs), computer-based systems intended to assist managers in preparing and analyzing decisions, have been single-user systems for most of the past decade. Only recently has DSS research begun to study the implications of the fact that most complex managerial decisions involve multiple decision makers and analysts. A number of tools for facilitating group decisions have been proposed under the label Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs). One of the most important functions of a GDSS is to provide problem-oriented services for communication among decision makers. On the basis of an analysis of the communication requirements in various group decision settings, this paper presents an architecture for defining and enforcing dynamic application-level protocols that organize decision group interaction. The architecture has been implemented on a network of personal computers in Co-oP, a GDSS for cooperative group decision making based on interactive, multiple-crit...

Clinical Pathways (CPs) are artifacts that clinicians are increasingly introducing in their practices in order to deal with health problems in the most effective, efficient and agreed way. As a result of an observational study at a Neonatology Intensive Care Unit, we found that most CPs are still paper-based. Although perceived useful even on paper, the physicians advocated a system integrating CPs with the clinical record. Based on their requirements, we present a proposal on how to conceive a computational system that can ...

The extension of CSCW research towards new domains, such as the home, has brought up many ideas to support ageing in place. However, the social wellbeing as a pivotal pillar of healthiness besides physical and psychical health has not gained much attention yet. With a workshop at the European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work in 2009, we opened a forum for research in the area of social wellbeing of the elderly by means of focusing on social media. By bringing together CSCW and social media researchers we wish to open up discussions on the development of new interaction and coordination spaces for wellbeing and social support which enhance the spaces of physical home environments.
