Achieving progress in understanding the cause, nature, and treatment of autism requires an integration of concepts, approaches, and empirical findings from genetic, cognitive neuroscience, animal, and clinical studies. The need for such integration has been a fundamental tenet of the discipline of developmental psychopathology from its inception. It is likely that the discovery of autism susceptibility genes will depend on the development of dimensional measures of broader phenotype autism traits. It is argued that knowledge of the cognitive neuroscience of social and language behavior will provide a useful framework for defining such measures. In this article, the current state of knowledge of the cognitive neuroscience of social and language impairments in autism is reviewed. Following from this, six candidate broader phenotype autism traits are proposed: (a) face processing, including structural encoding of facial features and face movements, such as eye gaze; (b) social affiliat...

Introduction Mowat–Wilson syndrome is a congenital syndrome caused by a defect of the transcriptional repressor ZFHX1B (SIP1) gene on the chromosome 2q22–q23. The genotype–phenotype analysis confirmed that ZFHX1B deletions and mutations result in a recognizable facial dysmorphism with a multiple congenital anomaly and mental retardation. Case report This report is about one new patient from Croatia with the typical phenotype. Molecular genetic studies showed the novel mutation in ZFHX1B (exon 8: c.2372del C; p.T791fsX816). This mutation has not been reported before. The literature is reviewed. Conclusion Mowat–Wilson syndrome is a newly described congenital syndrome and should be considered in any individual with characteristic facial features and mental retardation in associations with congenital malformations.

The eyelid-eyebrow region is the center for facial expression. Youth and beauty are associated with smooth, wrinkle-free skin and proportional facial features. The position of the eyebrows conveys emotion, and consequently, even a minor change in brow position can alter the expression of an individual's face. Repositioning the eyebrows and reducing the prominence of the glabellar frown lines can change the expression from one of anger and hostility to one that is more pleasant and natural. Various methods have been used for rejuvenation of the upper face. The height or length of the forehead is a useful guide for choosing the appropriate technique. We performed the coronal browlift using the subgaleal dissection plane, with subperiosteal dissection of 2.5 cm of the periosteal band over the supraorbital rim. We believe that this technique provided us with the benefits of the two dissection planes, with a more permanent result.

It is generally agreed that faces are not recognized only by utilizing some holistic search among all learned faces, but also through a feature analysis that aimed to specify more important features of each specific face. This paper addresses a novel decision strategy that efficiently uses both holistic and facial component (eye, nose and mouth) feature analysis to recognize faces. The proposed algorithm first performs a holistic search using the whole image features and selects probable candidates for further processing. Then the facial features of these probable candidates are compared and classified with the stored patterns in the train set. Finally the classification results are fused with a weighted majority voting to form the final decision. Simulation studies justify the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to that of Eigenface method.

Recently, in addition to autonomous vehicle technology research and development, machine learning methods have been used to predict a driver's condition and emotions in order to provide information that will improve road safety. A driver's condition can be estimated not only by basic characteristics such as gender, age, and driving experience, but also by a driver's facial expressions, bio-signals, and driving behaviours. Recent developments in video processing using machine learning have enabled images obtained from cameras to be analysed with high accuracy. Therefore, based on the relationship between facial features and a driver's drowsy state, variables that reflect facial features have been established. In this paper, we proposed a method for extracting detailed features of the eyes, the mouth, and positions of the head using OpenCV and Dlib library in order to estimate a driver's level of drowsiness.

Facial expression recognition is to determine the emotional state of the face regardless of its identity. Most of the existing datasets for facial expressions are captured in a visible light spectrum. However, the visible light (VIS) can change with time and location, causing significant variations in appearance and texture. In this paper, we present a novel research on a dynamic

The human face communicates an impressive number of visual signals. Although adults' ratings of facial attractiveness are consistent across studies, even cross-culturally, there has been considerable controversy surrounding attempts to identify the facial features that cause faces to be judged attractive or unattractive. Studies of physical attractiveness have attempted to identify the features that contribute to attractiveness by studying the relationships between attractiveness and (a) symmetry,(b) averageness, and (c) ...

Local binary pattern (LBP) is a nonparametric descriptor, which efficiently summarizes the local structures of images. In recent years, it has aroused increasing interest in many areas of image processing and computer vision and has shown its effectiveness in a number of applications, in particular for facial image analysis, including tasks as diverse as face detection, face recognition, facial expression analysis, and demographic classification. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of LBP methodology, including several more recent variations. As a typical application of the LBP approach, LBP-based facial image analysis is extensively reviewed, while its successful extensions, which deal with various tasks of facial image analysis, are also highlighted.

The scene for this paper is set in the USA immediately post-9/11 when the meaning of nation shifted dramatically, in turn shaping Muslim American identity. I examine Muslim American undergraduate women's performance of immigrant, gendered, youthful, Muslim and American identities. The findings are framed within symbolic interactionist, Foucauldian and cultural production frameworks, and I use ethnographic vignettes gathered during research in Washington, DC from 2002 to 2003 to illustrate the discursive and performative construction of an imagined American community by Muslim Americans and majority Americans respectively. Muslim American youth both experience and conduct acts of ‘everyday nationalism’ and construct Muslim American citizenship, deploying and covering racial, cultural, religious and immigrant attributes contextually. Facets of identity such as birth, transnational ties, racial and facial features, cultural practices, types and degrees of religiosity, all come into play in a battle for survival that is at once personal, political, social and symbolic.

Visual scanpath recording was used to investigate the information processing strategies used by a prosopagnosic patient, SC, when viewing faces. Compared to controls, SC showed an aberrant pattern of scanning, directing attention away from the internal configuration of facial features (eyes, nose) towards peripheral regions (hair, forehead) of the face. The results suggest that SC’s face recognition deficit can be linked to an inability to assemble an accurate and unified face percept due to an abnormal allocation of attention away from the internal face region. Extraction of stimulus attributes necessary for face identity recognition is compromised by an aberrant face scanning pattern.

We report on a family with syndromic X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) caused by an Xp22.2-22.13 duplication. This family consists of a carrier mother and daughter and four affected sons, presenting with mental retardation, developmental delay, cardiovascular problems and mild dysmorphic facial features. Female carriers have normal intelligence and some common clinical features, as well as different clinical abnormalities. Cytogenetic analysis of the mother showed an Xp22.2 duplication which was passed to all her offspring. Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) using whole chromosome paint and Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) clones covering Xp22.12-Xp22.3 region, confirmed the X chromosome origin and the size of the duplication. Two different targeted microarray methodologies were used for breakpoint confirmation, resulting in the localization of the duplication to approximately 9.75-18.98 Mb. Detailed description of such rare duplications provides valuable data for the investigation of genetic disease etiology.
