Data compression is one of the enabling technologies for the application of communication technology with ever growing Internet, explosive development of mobile communication and the ever-increasing impact of video communication to store the data in a compact way for minimum cost of storage and transmission. There are various compression techniques available which are capable of application specific large compression ratios.

Powerful computers and affordable digital media appliances result in a rapid growth of possibilities in the field of multimedia applications. There has been a significant increase in creation and use of multimedia content. Nowadays everybody can be treated as a potential creator and user of multimedia content. In order to deliver multimedia services to end-users, many parties are integrated and a series of Web services is accessed. A Web service in the composition can become unreachable by a number of circumstances, which requires run-time actions to replace it by another compatible Web service. A Web service can also perform less well than guaranteed, which also requires action in order to fulfill QoS requirements. To answer these requirements, we designed a broker middleware offering dynamic selection and composition of Multimedia Content Delivery services and automatic load balancing of these services over the available application servers. Since users want fast and reliable conn...

The increasing development of advanced multimedia applications requires new technologies for organizing and retrieving by content databases of still digital images or digital video sequences. To this aim image and image sequence contents must be described and adequately coded. In this paper we describe a system allowing content-based annotation and querying in video databases. No user action is required during the database population step. The system automatically splits a video into a sequence of shots, extracts a few representative frames (said r-frames) from each shot and computes r-frame descriptors based on color, texture and motion. Queries based on one or more features are possible. Very interesting results obtained during the severe tests the system was subjected to are reported and discussed.

Provision of seamless service to multimedia applications in cellular wireless networks largely depends on the way calls are handled during handoff. Hence, sufficient resources must be provided for handoff (HO) connections when a mobile station (MS) moves from one cell to another. Effective allocation of resources can be achieved when the exact future trajectory of MSs is known in advance.

Automatic discrimination of speech and music is an important tool in many multimedia applications. The paper presents a robust and effective approach for speech/music discrimination, which relies on a set of features derived from fundamental frequency (F0) estimation. Comparison between the proposed set of features and some commonly used timbral features is performed, aiming to assess the good discriminatory power of the proposed F0-based feature set. The classification scheme is composed of a classical Statistical Pattern Recognition classifier followed by a Fuzzy Rules Based System. Comparison with other well-proven classification schemes is also performed. Experimental results reveal that our speech/music discriminator is robust enough, making it suitable for a wide variety of multimedia applications.

This paper considers the implementation of cyclic codes encoder and decoder for multimedia content in the form of sound data using National Instruments LabView software. Cyclic codes can be defined by two parameters, which are code size n and information bit size k. LabView is an easy to use, multipurpose software which has many features for designing and prototyping. This research is a preliminary research on channel coding implementation on LabView. In this research, cyclic codes are used to implement the design. 16-bit sound data are used as test subjects for cyclic code encoding, decoding, and error correction. The result shows that the design works well. The design can correct short two-bit error in last n-k position of the codeword. Authors’ next project is to implement more advanced code for error correcting implementation in LabView.

In recent years, Internet has known an unprecedented growth, which, in turn, has lead to an increased demand for real-time and multimedia applications that have high Quality-of-Service (QoS) demands. This evolution lead to difficult challenges for the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide good QoS for their clients as well as for the ability to provide differentiated service subscriptions for those clients who are willing to pay more for value added services. Furthermore, a tremendous development of several types of overlay ...

Workloads drive architecture design and will change in the next two decades. For high-performance, general-purpose processors, there is a consensus that multimedia will continue to grow in importance. The authors predict these processors will incorporate more media processing capabilities, eventually bringing about the demise of specialized media processors, except perhaps, in embedded applications. These enhanced general-purpose processor capabilities will arise from multimedia applications that require real-time response, continuous-media data types and significant fine-grained data parallelism

This paper elaborates a study conducted to propose a folktale conceptual model based on folktale classification systems of type, motif, and function. Globally, three distinguish folktale classification systems exist and have been used for many years nonetheless not actually converge and achieve agreement on classification issues. The study aims to develop a conceptual model that visually depicts the combination and connection of the three folktale classification systems. The method opted for the conceptual model development is pictorial representation. It is hoped that the conceptual model developed would be an early platform to subsequently catalyze more robust and cohesive folktale classification system.

This work presents an analysis based on a triple play transmission generated on two combined access technologies, PLC (Power Line Communications) and ADSL2+ (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), called of pDSL. New services are based on multimedia applications, as voice over internet protocol (VoIP), video on demand (VoD), and internet protocol television (IPTV). Such services use digital broadband networks such as
