This volume has been prepared under the auspices of the project entitled, ‘Competition Reforms in Key Markets for Enhancing Social & Economic Welfare in Developing Countries’ (CREW Project). This project was implemented by CUTS in four countries: Ghana, India, Philippines and Zambia, and across two common sectors: Staple Food and Bus Transport with the support from DFID (UK) and BMZ (Germany) facilitated by GIZ (Germany). The aim of the project was to highlight the relevance of competition reforms for social and economic welfare in developing countries, and motivate other countries, governments and development partners to accord greater attention to the subject of competition reforms. In view of this overall aim of the project, with inputs from the project advisers CUTS designed the final conference of the CREW project on a broader theme to talk about ‘Relevance of Competition & Regulatory Reforms in Pursuing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Developing Countries’. The theme was thought to be both contemporary and relevant in view of the adoption of the SDGs a couple of months before this final conference. In addition to the support it received from DFID (UK), BMZ (Germany) and GIZ (Germany), the conference also received support from the World Bank, G-77 Secretariat and the OECD. CUTS is grateful to all the above organisations for supporting the conference, and indeed also the production of this volume. We acknowledge the support from the members of the Project Advisory Committee of the CREW project, who contributed to make this conference a grand success. Special thanks to Clement Onyango and colleagues at CUTS Nairobi for their support and tireless efforts in the run-up and during the conference. We gratefully acknowledge the hard work and patience of all the paper authors for contributing extremely interesting individual chapters to this volume. We are also thankful to those friends of CUTS who reviewed the draft papers – Eleanor Fox, Tania Begazo/Martha Licetti (World Bank), Rafaelita Aldaba, R S Khemani, Frederic Jenny, Payal Malik, Allan Fels, David Ong’olo, Ashwini Swain, Peter Holmes and John Davies/Lynn Robertson (OECD). We are indebted to Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary General, UNCTAD for writing an encouraging Foreword – and we hope to continue to receive his and UNCTAD’s support. We greatly appreciate the diligence of Madhuri Vasnani and Garima Shrivastava for editing and Mukesh Tyagi for preparing the layout of this report. Special thanks are due to Ashutosh Soni for his excellent coordination of communication with authors and reviewers of papers of this volume. We acknowledge the efforts of all the members of the CREW team, especially Cornelius Dube, Shreya Kaushik and Neha Tomar. Last but not the least, this report would not have seen the light of the day without the skillful direction, and overall guidance of Pradeep S Mehta, Secretary General, CUTS. He took special interest in this volume and went through each and every paper carefully himself. Words alone cannot convey our sincere gratitude to each and every individual who have contributed in every small way towards bringing out this volume. But it is only words that this world thrives on. We express our sincere gratefulness to all such individuals, without whom the publication of this volume would not have been possible.

Business are designed to make profits. However, they cannot survive now with the standard methods of advertising and business operations. This is a brand new age where multimedia, internet social media and online connections are in and papers and TV advertisements are outside. There's a good demand and reply on corporate video creation clips which will showcase the businesses' service and product offerings.

The space within which the entrepreneurs exist is filled with risks, opportunities and other environmental resources. Scholars have argued that entrepreneurs are constantly discovering and identifying value potentials because significant values arise from the existence of positive externalities which can be captured and exploited. Positive externalities or opportunities can create substantial and desirable gains if they can be monetized, leveraged and exploited. These externalities refer to the natural environmental resources within the space where the entrepreneurs operate (Hoogendoorn et al., 2019). From the perspective of space, this paper will explore the emergence of opportunities or risks within the space through the theoretical lens of structuration and complex science and will specifically discuss the collision and the meeting of opportunities with the entrepreneurs at the nexus from the perspective of entrepreneurial energy excitation.
Entrepreneurship originates from a nexus of individuals and opportunities (Shane, 2003). The unique juncture in space or nexus in which the entrepreneurs and opportunities exist is central to the study of entrepreneurship because it is in this juncture or nexus that identification and evaluation of risks and opportunities take place. It is the subsequent human actions, driven by the level of entrepreneurial energy that will lead to the myriad of possible venture pathways. For risks, entrepreneurs perceive them and will subsequent work towards mitigation or avoidance through varied measures. The exploitation of opportunities is concerned with acquiring and employing resources in the space to gain certain advantages. Likewise, with risks, entrepreneurs perceive the risks and work towards the mitigation or avoidance of the perceived risk in the venture pathways.
In this paper, entrepreneurship is viewed through structuration and complexity science lens to present the entrepreneurial venture as the instantiated outcome of the entrepreneur–opportunity interaction through time and space (Sarason et al., 2006). Complexity science offers a theoretical lens for exploring the complex interdependencies of a complex, and adaptive pluralistic world with irreversibility and randomness being the rules- a dynamical systems in the natural and physical worlds. The key central concept of complexity is that interactivities between parts of open systems that creates unpredictable and seemingly random patterns. While the history of the open system is relevant in understanding its dynamics, the specific isolation of individual part of the system does not reveal the casual mechanisms in the system (Fuller & Moran, 2001).
The paper explores whether how entrepreneurial energy arise from the convergence/ collision of entrepreneurs with opportunities in a dynamical, unpredictable and random way in a nexus in space.

This report captures the main findings of an 18-month study on the growth of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Canada. The central question that this inquiry sought to answer was: what are the factors that drive SME growth? The study involved a large scale survey of SMEs and a set of in-depth interviews with the leaders of ‘High Impact SMEs’. High Impact SMEs are organizations that are achieving high growth (in revenue, profits and employment) and are disruptive, investing in a broader range of innovative activities, and being more diversified in the markets they serve. They exemplify organizations that many of us aspire to create. This report presents a new model – The Leaders Growth Mindset – to explain how leaders of High Impact SMEs operate. This model identifies a common set of practices leaders apply and that we can each develop in our everyday work.

The rediscovery of small businesses or enterprise in tackling economic downturn and unemployment is in itself a challenge that most governments around the world are battling with. This paper intends to develop a concept that introduces small business groups or clubs in secondary and tertiary institutions and should be closely supervised by the lecturers or teachers and mentored by renowned business gurus, voluntarily. This work would simply observe people, attitude, institutions and the know-how on creating wealth via entrepreneurship. In this respect, perhaps the informal/illiterate entrepreneur is creating wealth and leading the Nigerian business sector in a rediscovery of business as an enterprise, and also the rediscovery of business as a process limited only by the boundaries of our individual youth determination, intelligence, imaginative power, energy, and focused power. This paper would consolidate on existing knowledge and good practices in entrepreneurship education around three focus areas that covers the lifelong learning process of an individual: youth, higher education and social inclusion. It also outlines specific approaches that are needed for each one of these areas as well as opportunities, challenges, and practical recommendations. Keyword: Redefining entrepreneurship education, redirecting innovation, creative, skillful and youthful energy into new business ventures Entrepreneurship is an inner mindset of an individual to start a business venture or do business differently from the status quo. Entrepreneurship education seeks to provide students/individuals with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to encourage entrepreneurial success in a variety of settings. For the sake of this paper, entrepreneurship education would be restricted to a practical business group or club. The argument still lies on the great profitability of illiterate entrepreneurial against a literate youth unwilling to venture into any form of innovative products. Entrepreneurship and education are two such extraordinary opportunities that need to be leveraged and interconnected to develop the human capital that would be required to building the societies of the future. Entrepreneurship is the engine fuelling innovation, employment generation and economic growth. Only by creating an environment where entrepreneurship can prosper and where entrepreneurs can try new ideas and empower others that ensure that many of the world's issues will be addressed. As the definition is diverse, most of times they lead to the same opinion, as Kuratko and Hodgetts (2004) puts the opinion forward, Entrepreneurship is a dynamic process of vision, change, and creation. It requires an application of energy and passion towards the creation and implementation of new ideas and creative solutions. The essential ingredients include the willingness to take a calculated risk – in terms of time, equity, or career, the ability of formulating an effective venture team; the creative skill to marshal needed resource and fundamental skill of building solid business plan and finally, the vision to recognize opportunity where others see chaos, contradiction, and confusion. (Kuratko and Hodgetts, 2004).

The aim of this paper is to contribute to an understanding of the entrepreneurship process in Africa byevaluating the link between starting up unregistered and future
firm performance. The widespread assumption has been that firms starting up unregistered in the informal economy suffer from poor performance compared to those starting up registered and in the formal economy. To test this poorer performance thesis, World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) data is evaluated from across 41 African countries covering the period from 2006 to 2013. Controlling for a comprehensive set of other determinants of firm performance, the finding is that formal enterprises with five or more employees that started up unregistered have significantly higher annual sales, employment and productivity growth rates compared with those firms that registered their operations at startup. The paper concludes by discussing the theoretical and policy implications of this finding.

The entrepreneurship setting—an extreme organizational context—provides fertile ground for organizationally relevant theory testing and development. In this paper, we propose that randomized experiments in the context of entrepreneurship have considerable potential to advance theory in entrepreneurship, as well as other areas of organization science including organizational behavior and strategic management. We ground this proposition in a multipronged review of randomized experiments in entrepreneurship (REE). Based on this review of prior work and emerging trends, we provide illustrative examples of innovative theory-driven experiments and motivate future research to consider randomized experiments in the entrepreneurial context both for testing boundary conditions and enhancing organizational theorizing broadly.

The role of entrepreneurship in economic growth has received minimal attention in research compared to other factors mainly because of the challenges involved in measuring entrepreneurship to make it an appropriate variable. Despite the enhanced understanding of the multiple elements of economic growth, economics literature and models fall short of addressing the influence of entrepreneurs on economic growth. The amassing of factors such as knowledge, human, and physical capital do not comprehensively explain economic advancement. This report sought to assess the impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth in the UK by a building a regression model. It used the annual change in GDP per capita as a measure of economic development and the dependent variable of the model. The independent variables of the study were the unemployment rate, self-employment, and a number of start-ups. The analysis established that the rate of unemployment was the most significant variable of the research and it adversely affects the economic growth. The estimated model did not adequately impact the movement of the economy. Also, the self-employment coefficient was not significant for the study. Therefore, the study established that entrepreneurship does not significantly affect economic growth.

We start justifying our focus on innovative start-ups based on their decisive contribution to economic growth and job creation at the regional and country level. To support innovative start-ups, effective venture capital (VC) markets, as an alternative to conventional financing intermediaries, have shown to play an important role beyond its financing function. We review the successful experience of the VC market in the U.S. and the contrasting experiences of replications around the world. This essay also describes some empirical evidences of how effective commonly applied policy approaches have been in the development of active VC markets. Most of the studies about VC have focus on the key advising and consulting role of private VC firms. Therefore, we would like to elaborate the role of public VC and put emphasis on the complementary role of public VC companies. The difference of the objective between public and private VC will also be explored, hence “who-does-what” in supporting innovative entrepreneurship will be clear.

Entrepreneurship triggers the economic condition of a country. Entrepreneurship increases the standard of living and has provided opportunities to improve the standard of living. There are several studies on the relationship between the entrepreneurial characteristics and entrepreneurial intention of students. There are very few studies on the need and importance of entrepreneurial skills over the entrepreneurial intention of graduate students. This paper concentrates on the 537 graduate students of science, commerce, and arts. The reason for selecting these students is to understand the level of involvement in entrepreneurial activity and their preparedness to take up entrepreneurship as a career. Hypotheses were tested with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and chi-square tests. This study helps to understand the willingness of students towards entrepreneurship. This paper focuses on the entrepreneurial skills required to equip graduate students to choose entrepreneurship as a career. The role of institutions in increasing the interest of students towards entrepreneurship.

This paper focuses on the potential opportunities that disruptive innovation may bring to the healthcare sector of emerging and developing economies, and in particular to the one of the leading Sub-Saharan Africa’s country, Nigeria. The author examines the possibility of using advancements in the innovation of Technology 4.0 to bridge the gap in access to what could be defined as “good enough” healthcare services for poorer regions of the world while also aiming to potentially reduce healthcare costs and making the local healthcare systems more sustainable, productive, and accessible. Nigerian health industry is used as an exploratory case study to examine the feasibility of implementing Mobile Health and Telehealth Systems, and more in general, to assess the potential benefits of disruptive innovations in the healthcare industry for the lower income patients of emerging and developing economies. This analysis on disruptive innovation, industry competitiveness, and sustainability of the healthcare models is inspired by Michael Porter’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) strategic framework (Porter et al., 2011; 2018) and by Clayton Christensen’s Disruptive Innovation Theory (Christensen et al., 1997; 2000; 2004; 2006; 2013; 2015, 2017). This study also aims to provide a compelling argument supporting the thesis that disruptive innovations in the healthcare system can help grant access to critical basic healthcare services in poor regions of the world while also achieving multiple goals such as, sustainability, efficiency, shared-value creation, and corporate profitability for forward-looking firms with scalable and disruptive business models. Ultimately, the paper aims to contribute to the body of knowledge in the field of disruptive innovation, sustainability, and creating shared-value strategies, assessing the feasibility of solutions that may drive to improved competitiveness, social progress, social inclusion, and sustainability of the healthcare industry in one of the developing economies. The results of this study aim to prove that, in the coming years, disruptive innovations are likely to redefine the competitive environment of the healthcare industry and improve the healthcare conditions of the poorer, underserved, and underreached population of developing and emerging economies like Nigeria, thus increasing their life expectancy rates.

The poultry industry is an important food sector that has become increasingly sophisticated as the level of economic development has increased. The purpose of this study is to suggest ways to improve the efficiencies of the poultry value chain and to build sustainable competitive poultry industry. There is an absence of information on research conducted to characterize, understand and develop the emu production systems in Andhra Pradesh. This study investigates the resulting problem of improvement in emu farming needs to be tackled by a) increasing productivity of emu production and delivery system and b) increase farmer’s profits through better value addition. Value addition to food products assumed vital importance due to: 1. Diversity in socio-economic conditions, 2. Industrial growth, urbanization and 3. Globalization. It is not merely for higher monitory return but also with better taste and nutrition. Value is added by changing their form, colour and other such methods to increase the shelf life of perishables. Hence, the study found that there is a great scope to extend requisite technical know- how to agro based industries for the production of value added food products.

Technology startups are expected to be a major driving force of economic growth in Europe. The search for new high-growth startups has been particularly topical in Finland, the country that is known for its high-tech products – and the fall of Nokia’s mobile phone business. Although a record number of startups has been established in recent
years, the previously identified challenge is that only a small percentage of entrepreneurial businesses are responsible for the lion’s share of economic benefits typically associated with entrepreneurial activity. Hence, we need better understanding of what level of
growth technology entrepreneurs aim to create and why there may be differences in growth ambitions among them. In this study, we undertook interpretivist case study research in pursuit of rich, empirically grounded understanding of entrepreneurial growth
ambitions in the context of Finnish technology startups. We interviewed entrepreneurs at a Finnish startup event and supplemented this information with data available publicly on the Internet related to the growth ambitions of startups. Our study sought to increase
understanding of the different aspects of entrepreneurial growth ambitions, and to explore the relationship between context and growth. Based on the findings, we suggest that growth ambitions should be seen as a complex, socially constructed concept. The
growth ambitions of entrepreneurs in our study were influenced, at least in part, by their startups' institutional and market contexts, the scalability of their business models, their personal characteristics and experience, and their perceptions of the barriers and constraints
of the field. We conclude that startups have very different growth pathways: although the growth of one startup may depend on the talent of a few software developers, the growth of another startup may be based on its success in building international sales
networks. As a result, to get most out of the support provided for a startup ecosystem, support activities should be tailored to different types of high-growth startups.
