Context: User involvement is generally considered as good practice in software development, contributing to user satisfaction and project success. Regular and frequent user involvement (UI) is central to Agile software development but expectations of different stakeholders about user involvement are not always aligned. This misalignment could contribute to conflict and miscommunication among stakeholders that may result in ineffective user involvement. Objective: Our aim is to compare and contrast the expectations of two stakeholder groups (software development team, and software users) about user involvement in order to assess their alignment. Method: We have conducted an exploratory case study of expectations about user involvement in an Agile software development. Qualitative data was collected through interviews to design a novel method for the assessing the alignment of expectations about user involvement by applying Repertory Grids (RG). Results: By aggregating the results fro...

Background and Objectives: There is a lack of understanding of how older adults’ involvement and participation matters in actual design practice. This systematic literature review investigates existing empirical studies involving older users during the design of technologies and explores the nature and consequences of involving older people. Research Design and Methods: Our literature review is informed by the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. We examined the included studies by means of thematic content analysis to identify the nature of older users’ involvement and existing evidence on what consequences it has. Results: In total, 40 empirical studies published in the period 2014–2018 are included in the review. Most empirical studies involve older people from local networks, with underlying stereotypical images and at lower levels of participation. The results reveal three main consequences of involving older users: learning, adjusted design, and an increased sense of participat...

User involvement has been shown to be beneficial in the development of useful and usable systems. The trend
of software development becoming a product-oriented activity creates challenges to user involvement. Field
studies appear a promising approach, but the analysis of the gathered user needs has been shown to be
demanding. This study presents, on the basis of seven case studies, an early user-involvement process
showing how user needs can be analysed and how the input to product development can be identified. In
addition, the process is tested in two industrial cases with interviews and a questionnaire. The results show
that the process supports effective early user involvement; the resulted requirements were evaluated as being
more successful and their quality as better than average. However, the case studies show that user
involvement not only provides useful information about users’ needs but also increases the understanding of
users’ values.

The application of digital technologies, which is continually breaking into new spheres of use, presents a challenging development. Business environments are rapidly evolving; new markers, new market players, new types of products, new user groups. All these changes raise different issues from those previously confronted in the computer industry. As the "usability issue" is applied to many product areas beyond traditional HCI we were interested to find our how far state of practice companies are adapting the UCD principles commonly advocated. We were also interested to see how these principles were being applied in business areas nor usually associated with the computer industry.

This paper examines the potential integration of Living Labs concepts of open and user driven innovation with Future Internet experimentally driven research approaches, in order to accelerate the user-driven development of Future Internet enabled services towards Smart Cities. Two key issues are underlying this integration: strengthening user involvement in experimental Internet research, and providing access to common resources such as testbed facilities and living lab resources. To explore the opportunities for such integration, three case studies from current FP7-ICT projects are discussed: SmartSantander, TEFIS and ELLIOT. A framework is proposed facilitating the sharing of resources offered by existing Smart City platforms, testbeds and living labs facilities as a basis for partnership agreements implementing open innovation approaches for Smart Cities.

This paper elaborates a design science approach for management planning anchored to the concept of a management design theory. Unlike the notions of design theories arising from information systems, management design theories can appear as a system of technological rules, much as a system of hypotheses or propositions can embody scientific theories. The paper illus trates this form of management

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted a lot of interest over the last decade in wireless and mobile computing research community. Applications of WSNs are numerous and growing, which range from indoor deployment scenarios in the home and office to outdoor deployment in adversary’s territory in a tactical battleground. However, due to distributed nature and their deployment in remote areas, these networks are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their performance. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield. Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios. Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible in WSNs. Design and implementation of secure WSNs is, therefore, a particularly challenging task. This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion on the state of the art in security technologies for WSNs. It identifies various possible attacks at different layers of the communication protocol stack in a typical WSN and presents their possible countermeasures. A brief discussion on the future direction of research in WSN security is also included.

The paper discusses how families affected by Typhoon Haiyan have been involved in housing reconstruction in the Philippines and the potential for the use of medium-rise buildings. Case study methodology was conducted based on data collected three months after Typhoon Haiyan. Reconstruction projects show different degrees of users involvement such as “reparation of previous makeshift shelter,”“shelter as humanitarian assistance,”“expanding people’s opportunities to rebuild,”“users as unskilled labor,” and finally “enhancing users self-construction and self-management capabilities.”“Freedom to rebuild,” a capability approach framework to evaluate users involvement and resilience in postdisaster housing reconstruction, has been developed and applied to a project in Ormoc, Leyte.

The quality of the residential environments can be examined related with various characteristics of design and construction processes. When we look from the user's point of view, it is obvious that, various needs of large number of users have to be met as well as the needs of individual users which change in time. In such conditions, dwelling user tries to solve the emerging spatial problems by making some alterations and thus adapting the space to his/her changing needs. With regard to this issue, flexible design solutions can be an important potential for user involvement to interfere in the residential environment. This paper aims at to examine how much the user would like to change his/her living environment while introducing the term ''Flexible Housing''. In pursuit of this aim the general terms and Habraken's ''Open Building'' concept is being discussed and a research about flexible housing has been conducted. The methodology starts with the conceptual framework through the general terms related with flexible housing and ''Open Building'' concept. Then a questionnaire and an interview is being made with people about their own houses. This will point how much, when and why the users would like to take role in their own living environments. With reference to the answers of the questionnaire and the interview a conceptual framework will be constituted about the flexible living ideas which will widen the perspective about the future living environments. The findings about the relationship between the user and the residential environment will also be evaluated. Research concludes that living environments need to be controlled by the user and ''Flexible Housing'' offers a great deal of alternatives which makes the user involve in his/her own residential environment.

User involvement is a need-based motivational attitude toward information systems and their development. As such, it has important implications for the successful creation and deployment of information systems in organizations. This paper reports on the development and validation of an instrument to determine if the distinction between a user's involvement in the process of information system diffusion can be measured independently of that user's involvement with the information system innovation itself. Utilizing previously-validated instruments from consumer behavior research, these two object-based categories of user involvement were operationalized.A longitudinal field study was conducted of users in a large financial institution during the implementation phase, in particular the later activities of the adaptation stage, of the information system diffusion process. During adaptation, the information system product becomes available for use in the organization. Late adapt...

Security awareness is very essential in securing intellectual property, in particular internal corporate information assets and its “Knowledge”. The dynamic nature of security attacks and the need to comply with government policies in protecting organisation’s data has a major influence on seeing organisations focus on strengthening against threats from the human element. This is a difficult challenge. Organisations must have a degree of trust their employees. They must trust their employees to interact responsibly as end-users with their information systems. They must trust their employees who work as developers to work responsibly and be motivated to develop systems with the organisations protection in mind. However organisations cannot expect all its employees to be educated in security issues before joining the organisation and therefore must take some responsibility for educating both users and developers on security issues and ethics. Although many organisations do have securi...

Understanding user needs and involving users are key success factors for service development. However, it is unclear how to apply old wisdoms from traditional product development settings in a social media context. This article analyses user involvement practices in a longitudinal case study of the virtual world and social networking service called Habbo. The focus is on how particular social media aspects, such as persistent user-created content and developers’ easy access to online user action, shaped user involvement and how it evolved over time. In line with previous research, the findings indicate that user involvement becomes more formal as the user community grows and the service-market combination matures. In addition, user involvement regarding social media appears to be an issue of timing, trans-nationality, and governance. The results suggest that the usability practitioner’ s ‘toolbox’ needs tuning regarding social media.

Rethinking the current settings of governance is urged by today's economic and political crisis: the participative praxis is not just burdensome and costly, but seems to be based more on the citizenship of entitlement rather than contribution. This paper discusses a solution, co-production, mostly neglected in Italian policy studies, brought back and developed in the user involvement debate. Co-production is a process through which part of the inputs used to produce a good or a service, but also a policy, are not contributed by the supposed providers (i.e. public officials), but by the receivers (Ostrom 1996). Co-production can reinstate the productivity of participation issue, restore a factually bottom-up perspective and overcome two misleading contrapositions between governance and government, and between inclusive governance and NPM.
