This conversation takes place in Warsaw. Carolyn Ellis has come to Poland to accompany Jerry Rawicki, a Warsaw Ghetto survivor, on his first trip back to Poland since the Holocaust. There she arranged to meet Marcin Kafar, a scholar in Poland who has spent time with her at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. During this visit, Marcin assists Carolyn with video recording Jerry’s experiences as they visit Holocaust sites, and Jerry remembers and reflects on his experience. Afterwards, Marcin converses with Carolyn about autoethnography, storytelling, and the importance of life in the context of searching for ethos by academics.

Writing scientific biographies evokes the problem of representativeness or of integrating the single case into more general questions of scholarly interest. The establishment of a link between micro and macrolevels inspired the present paper, which attempts to conceptualize the link between the individual biographical case and more general questions via the concept of microhistory. Microhistory does not present an easy solution to this problem, but it can generate sensitivity for the epistemological problems and narrative pitfalls of the biographical genre
After presenting a brief overview of the methodological foundations of microhistory, I evaluate publications on German sweets manufacturer Gebrüder Stollwerck AG as examples of microhistories of globalization and of kinship in entrepreneurial families. In a third step, I examine the specifics of entrepreneur biographies, paying particular attention to their narrative structure, as they tend to explain developments from within the black box of the entrepreneur or his family. There exists a broad spectrum of research questions that may go way beyond the chronological sequence of a biographical subject’s life course.
I suggest avoiding the pitfalls of the biographical method by linking the life of the subject to a reference value, to a research question that, in the best case, provides an experimental cardinal point outside of the object of study. In this sense, biographies — as well as case studies on companies — can be understood as microhistories of X.

Teoretyczną podstawę tekstu stanowią badania biograficzne, studia nad stylem życia i etosem.
This article aims at sketching a collective portrait of a particular group of new countryside inhabitants: these are people who, after 1989, bought a mansion or a palace once belonging to the landed gentry with an intention to live there. The article’s theoretical
approach owes to biographical research as well as to the studies of lifestyles and group ethos. On the basis of the material from 17 interviews with 19 research participants, the author sets out to establish these persons’ shared traits and analyzes their biographical
experience and daily routines of being owners of the heritage sites. The analysis centers on their motivations, lifestyle, attitudes towards the gentry heritage and membership in the wider circles that relates to the ethos of the group.

I Am Man is a collection of philosophical reflections and poems on gender difference. It combines biographical experiences, philosophy, feminist thought, literature and art to reveal the interlinkages of language, body and being. The book explores the theoretical position of gender skepticism; specifically, the beliefs that gender does not exist and that gender is invisible (“I do not see gender”). Composed as a space with forty-six imaginations, I Am Man addresses the historical and cultural dominance of the idea of Man as the universal, as the invisible default-rule. The reflections, poems and exhibits represent the creative act of imagining the being and doing of man when one has biographically always identified as woman. Inspired by art and literary works and by the philosophical polemics about gender of Jacques Lacan, Joan Copjec, Audre Lorde and Judith Butler among others, the book represents an expressive and creative approach to investigating how gender manifests in the world. I Am Man invites us to playfully and critically question gender identity and the power of words.

Event history calendar (EHC) methods have received increasing attention from the life-course surveys that have been used in recent years. According to the literature, the EHC provides high-quality data in retrospective surveys because it replicates the autobiographical memory retrieval processes. EHC interviewing is processed through the visual display of individual life events, phases and transitions on a chronological calendar grid, which allows respondents to effectively link events as well as to identify and correct possible dating errors. Moreover, interactive interviewing facilitates the retrieval mechanism. In this study, we test whether the absence of an interviewer and/or interactive interviewing are associated with a reduction in data quality. This aspect is particularly relevant for surveys, as the absence of the interviewer would allow the implementation of EHC methods in self-administered questionnaires. In Study 1, an experimental design compared the results of self-administered paper-and-pencil EHCs in the presence and absence of an interviewer. In Study 2, a quasi-experimental approach compared the results of an interactive EHC interview with those of a self-administered paper-and-pencil EHC. Neither of these studies showed systematic differences between self-administered and interviewer-administered EHCs. The self-administered mode performs better when the instructions and layout design of the questionnaire are clear and detailed. Our findings suggest that the visual properties of the EHC could be a sufficient condition for collecting good retrospective data in the self-administered mode once the initial burden of the task is overcome.

This paper analyzes a corpus of life stories from the students of the Master's Degree in Teacher Training in Secondary Education and Professional Training taught in Ecuador in the 2014-2015 the academic year. Beyond their status as students of the Master's Degree, the core of their narratives is their teaching at present as well as their own past as learners at different educational levels. The paper also reflects on the context for the production of these life stories, and the methodological possibilities of the biographical approach in the anthropology of education.

This article examines how women present a moral self in relation to public norms that constitute`good' motherhood.Thefocus of this article is on two types of written life story: first, those written by mothers who express a past or current wish to divorce and, second, those written by lone mothers. The life stories offer insights into how individuals account for their actions in situations where they face the moral dilemma of clashing ethical norms — care for self and care for children — and how individuals with a `spoiled identity' manage a moral presentation of self. The article concludes by critically examining the consequences of using written life stories rather than face-to-face interviews as data in a study of the moral tales that individuals tell.

The author deals with the methodology of biographical genre what is an absolutely ignored theme in Slovakia. He tries to answer the question in what way is the performance of an individual socially conditioned. His article is based on an analysis of the book of Lucien Febvre Le problème de l´incroyance au 16e siècle, La religion de Rabelais; the Pierre Bourdieu's article L´illusion Biographique; the book Saint Louis by Jacques le Goff; as well as methodology of approach of Jean Lacouture's. Then author analyses a specific case – how the home environment influenced development of political views of M. R. Štefánik which can be considered rather conservative. Štefánik's attitude to democracy was to a big extent determined by his home environment what means that it did not depend on his autonomous decision only. In the end of his article, the author points out to the ambiguous attitude of Štefánik's collaborators from the Czecho–Slovak resistance as for his cult. On the one hand they strongly supported it but on the other they conducted a whispering campaign against him and as a matter of fact, in favour of themselves.

Kniha zve čtenáře do intimního světa rodinné paměti, dokumentovaného rozhovory s příslušníky tří generací vybraných rodin. Velkou pozornost věnovali účasti jednotlivých generací na rodinném vyprávění, shodám a změnám v mezigeneračním předávání vzpomínek a způsobu přijetí významných historických událostí souvisejících s poválečnou migrací. Kniha přináší cenné poznatky o strategiích přenosu vzpomínek v rodinném prostředí, o vzpomínkové kultuře a migraci jako důležitém historickém procesu 20. století.

Rather than preserving original objects, the conservation of contemporary art should be thought of as managing change. This raises the question of how to theoretically capture the variability of the work without losing the sense of its artistic identity. The researchers participating in the interdisciplinary project New strategies in the conservation of contemporary art propose to use a biographical approach to investigate and compare the histories of artworks, both before and after they enter museum collections. In this paper the authors claim that not only do decisive turning points in an artwork’s life occur at other moments than those conventionally recognised, but moreover, that they are made up of various and diverging timelines, to be mapped as a river’s trajectory.

Human interest stories or case studies aim to highlight a specific development issue from one person’s (or group of people’s) perspective. They are useful as qualitative background to monitoring and evaluation, for organisational learning and programme learning, for campaigns and media communications, and for funding and marketing departments looking for story leads. Their power lies in their ability to bring issues to life, showing the link between ‘macro’ policy questions and the ‘micro’ impacts these have on people’s lives.Their personal quality helps the reader or viewer to connect with, and de-mystify complicated issues, such as global trade or HIV/AIDS. They create a bond of empathy and understanding based on a shared humanity. As a result, they have the potential to reveal a complex picture of a certain socio-economic or political reality by depicting one experience of it.

There are several ways in which to recognise an auto-representational drive in the oeuvre of French artist Yves Klein. The possibility of an autobiographical reading of Klein’s oeuvre is therefore without dispute, especially in the cases of his paintings and theoretic writing. Here I argue that the IKB series (usually known as “the blue monochromes”) is a series of auto-portraits. Indeed, I suggest that this interpretation is more coherent with Klein’s motivations and richer in consequences for a theory of auto-fiction.

Abstract: This text presents the phenomenon of transfiguration that has been revealed during the development of a biographical-narrative research with Colombian and Spanish teachers. It has been observed that this change occurs in the person when he narrates his experiences, shaping the memory and altering a lived reality. This alteration in the perception of the memories can profoundly transform the person and give the possibility to rewrite the life history. The purpose of the research is the deep knowledge of significant experiences of a group of participants through autobiography and biography. Autobiographical development process and simultaneously exposed the underlying phenomenon of transformation that occurs when narrates the life and remembers the experiences that have been significant throughout its existence. The research uses a qualitative methodology through written autobiographies, interviews and biographical conversations.
