Giving to computers the ability to talk and understand a natural language conversation is a major field of research. We have developed the HALPIN (Hyperdialogue avec un Agent en Langage Proche de l’Interaction Naturelle) system to implement our multimodal conversational model for information retrieval. This dialogue-oriented interface allows the access to the INRIA's database (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique, 83297 documents available), on the internet, in a natural language (NL) way, and gives its oral responses via usual browsers. The results of the first experiments show that the Halpin system provides some interesting dialogues (in particular with the beginners), according to the user’s goals and skills, that leads to information retrieval success, while searches with the original user interface (traditional web form) failed.

Because of the growing amount of information on the internet and people’s increasing dependence on information, internet skills should be considered as a vital resource in contemporary society. This article focuses on the differential possession of internet skills among the Dutch population. In two studies, an in-depth range of internet skills are measured by charging subjects assignments to be accomplished on the internet. Subjects were recruited by applying a random stratified sampling method over gender, age, and education. While the level of operational and formal internet skills appeared quite high, the level of information and strategic internet skills is questionable. Whereas education appeared an important contributor to all skill levels, age only appeared a significant contributor to operational and formal skills. The results strengthen the findings that the original digital divide of physical internet access has evolved into a divide that includes differences in skills to ...

This research aimed to explore the actual situation of information accessibility for university students with visual impairment at higher academic institutions of Lahore, Pakistan. This research adopted a qualitative research design using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to investigate the proposed phenomenon. The participants were recruited with purposive sampling from higher academic institutions for data collection. Face to face interview of 15 visually impaired students was conducted using an interview guide. The participants were debriefed for data authentication and verification at the end. Each interview was transcribed and analyzed carefully using IPA. The results indicated that these students utilized interpersonal relationships as the primary source of their academic information. The other available facilities for information access included the internet, disability resources center (if available at the institution), and the university library. The major barr...

Constructing a sexual identity is one of the major developmental tasks of adolescence. Applying the Media Practice Model, this study retrospectively examines how self-identifying lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals used media during the commencement of the coming-out process and the effects of media use during this pivotal time of development. Results indicate that the Internet plays a critical role

This paper considers the change in information seeking behaviour of tourists as a result of the increased use of the World Wide Web as an information resource in the context of information services provided by visitor information centres (VICs). The theoretical approach adopts the model of expectation-disconfirmation effects on web customer satisfaction. The paper proposes that visitor information centres are

Sense-making in the information-seeking process is one of the major information-seeking models. Questions have been raised about information seekers’ ambiguous needs and focus-shifting tendency relative to sense-making. This paper reports initial findings from a study investigating how experienced information processors (participants) interact with and make sense of web-based information sources whilst undertaking a topic comprehension task. Participants were provided with some resources and then their sensemaking strategies were assessed. In this study, audio/video data has been collected. All participants individually completed a topic comprehension task. Their behaviours were coded in terms of an empirically based framework of search, evaluation, and sensemaking actions. This paper highlights how planning and use of external representations are reflected in participants’ interactions with resources. These and other results are discussed concerning sensemaking. This paper is targeted at people who are interested in information-seeking models specifically in sensemaking.

Trust is viewed as a crucial factor in social commerce due to the prominent role and significant amount of peer-generated contents. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between trust in social commerce and customers' purchase intentions by providing a mechanism to describe this relationship. Thus, a proposed model is developed based on three concepts: social presence, social commerce information seeking and familiarity with the platform. The model explains the mechanisms through which social commerce information seeking, familiarity, social presence and trust influence customers' intentions to purchase from social commerce platforms. For the purpose of this study, a survey is designed and distributed to Facebook users. The findings demonstrate that trust in a social networking site has positive influence on purchase intentions. Moreover, trust encourages information seeking, which in turn improves purchase intentions. Furthermore, both social presence and familiarity are found to enhance trust and purchase intentions. According to the findings, several managerial and theoretical implications are highlighted. Particularly, as the first study to investigate the adoption of social commerce among Jordanian customers, this study offers valuable insights and implications for Jordanian firms’ managers and marketers who are targeting direct sales on social networking platforms.

Measurement of workload is a critical element of any research involving operator tasking in complex systems. One common method of measuring workload is through secondary tasking, which requires a subject to use spare mental capacity to attend to secondary tasking. Traditional secondary tasking testing can be intrusive and introduce an unrealistic artifact. However, embedded secondary tasks do not fundamentally change the task or task performance. This paper will discuss the use of a chat interface, resembling that of popular instant messaging programs, as an embedded secondary tasking measurement tool in the testing of supervisory control performance for monitoring and control of Tactical Tomahawk missiles. The use of the embedded chat tool to induce information-seeking secondary tasks yielded critical results needed for determination of operator workload. However one drawback discovered is that some subjects treated incoming instant messages as the primary task instead of the secon...

Aims: To explore the information needs and information seeking behaviour of family doctors, identifying any differences in attitudes and behaviours deriving from membership of a training practice and investigating the impact of a practice librarian. Methods: A case study of general practitioners (GPs) in Aylesbury Vale incorporated a quantitative study of use of the medical library, and two qualitative techniques, in-depth interviews and group discussions. Results: A total of 58 GPs, almost three quarters of those in the Vale, participated; 19 via individual interviews and a further 39 via two group discussions. Family doctors are prompted to seek information by needs arising from a combination of professional responsibilities and personal characteristics. A need for problem-orientated information, related to the care of individual patients, was the predominant factor that prompted these GPs to seek information. Personal collections remain the preferred information resource; electronic sources rank second. The study demonstrated low use of the medical library. However, both vocational training and the employment of a practice librarian impacted on library use. Conclusions: The study illuminates the information needs and preferences of GPs and illustrates the contribution that librarians may make at practice level, indicating the importance of outreach work.

With the fast development and increasing use of the World Wide Web as both an information seeking and an electronic commerce tool, Web usability studies are growing in importance. While Web designers have largely focused on the functional aspects of Web sites, there has been little systematic attention to (1) the motivational issues of Web user interface design or (2) a theoretically-driven approach to Web user satisfaction studies. The objective of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework and foundation for ...
