Most organizations require the verification of personal information before providing services, and the privacy of such information is of growing concern. The authors show how federated identity management systems can better protect users' information when integrated with trust negotiation. In today's increasingly competitive business environment, more and more leading organizations are building Web-based infrastructures to gain the strategic advantages of collaborative networking. However, to facilitate collaboration and fully exploit such infrastructures, organizations must identify each user in the collaborative network as well as the resources each user is authorized to access. User identification and access control must be carried out so as to maximize user convenience and privacy without increasing organizations1 operational costs. A federation can serve as the basic context for determining suitable solutions to this issue. A federation is a set of organizations that establish trust relationships with respect to the identity information-the federated identity information-that is considered valid. A federated identity management system (idM) provides a group of organizations that collaborate with mechanisms for managing and gaining access to user identity information and other resources across organizational boundaries

Los hablantes de una misma lengua, dependiendo de su familiaridad
con otras variantes dialectales de su misma lengua, perciben
intuitivamente similitudes y diferencias a nivel fónico, léxico y

The paper provides an overview of the digital tools developed as part of the Ebla Digital Archives Project, which aims to offer a digital edition of roughly 3,000 cuneiform tablets from ancient Ebla (modern Tell Mardikh, in western Syria), dated to the middle of the third millennium BCE. The Ebla archive is the oldest one in the history of mankind, for which extensive information concerning the primary setting of the documents is available. The archaicity of the writing system, combined with the inherent difficulties in reconstructing languages from the remote past (Sumerian, Akkadian, Eblaite), pushes us to rethink the strategies to properly digitally capture the complexity of these sources, of invaluable historical significance: administrative documents, literary texts, vocabularies, letters, etc. We tackled the problem through the development of a PostgreSQL database, which is populated by ad hoc Python scripts that parse input transliteration files, which in turn are encoded using a shallow mark-up language. The individual steps in such workflow are discussed, as well as the benefits in terms of advanced queries for information retrieval that such approach offers.

In cultural heritage, the documentation of artefacts can be both iconographic and textual, i.e. both pictures and drawings on the one hand, and text and words on the other are used for documentation purposes. This research project aims to produce a methodology to transform automatically verbal descriptions of material objects, with a focus on bookbinding structures, into standardized and scholarly-sound visual representations. In the last few decades, the recording and management of documentation data about material objects, including bookbindings, has switched from paper-based archives to databases, but sketches and diagrams are a form of documentation still carried out mostly by hand. Diagrams hold some unique information, but often, also redundant information already secured through verbal means within the databases. This project proposes a methodology to harness verbal information stored within a database and automatically generate visual representations. A number of projects wi...

Sophisticated writing systems, such as Cuneiform and Linear B, pose tremendous challenges for the development of digital corpora of annotated textual documents. The fact that both of them do not clearly represent the spoken form of the underlying languages, as well as the multi-level character of their logo-syllabic writing systems, has required the setting up of an ad hoc solution for complex data handling, aimed at capturing all of their features. While the usual approach of adapting a
mark-up language would have been possible at least in principle, Sinleqiunnini relies on a different formal model, having been conceived from its beginning as a database driven framework. Such a solution was demonstrated to be more efficient than mark-up languages in representing parallel, overlapping hierarchies, while it also simplified prototyping of a set of complex queries to exploit the different information levels of these texts. Finally, it provided a more functional instrument to perform multi-user/multi-level annotation.

The reasons of this success are many and diverse. An important one, however, consists in the influence that technological innovations have had on the accepted methodological principles of humanities computing. As John Unsworth has shown, we have been witnessing different phases of prevailing concerns in humanities computing projects and research: the chief orientation of interests has shifted from ‘tools,’ in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, to ‘sources,’ in the ’80s and ’90s, and now seems to be turning back from sources to tools (Unsworth 2004). From a computational point of view, what this change in orientation entailed was a shift of the attention focus from processing to representation, from developing algorithms applicable to information contents, to producing digital surrogates to replicate and visualise primary surce materials. The introduction of graphic interfaces, the development of WYSIWYG word processing systems on PCs, and the astounding explosion of the World Wide Web have u...

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a platform-independent method of identifying a document's structure and references. The Web is a distributed hypertext multimedia information service that has brought millions of non-academic and academic users to the Internet. In constrast to traditional GIS, multimedia Web GIS is not only able to collect, analyze and store data in traditional formats i.e. text, images and graphs but also audio, animations and video, using all the techniques, advantages and multimedia facilities of the Web. This paper explains multimedia data and the advantages of multimedia GIS (MMGIS) over traditional GIS. HTML plays a robust role in the development of the multimedia Web GIS. Through HTML our multimedia Web GIS can be viewed in three different categories. These are Static Web GIS, Dynamic Web GIS, and Active Web GIS. These three broad categories are also discussed

: Semantic interoperability among command and control information systems is critical to information sharing and proper automated processing. To improve multinational combined and joint mission capabilities, the Multilateral Interoperability Programme (MIP) has defined the Joint Command, Control, and Consultation Information Exchange Data Model (JC3IEDM), which is gaining wide acceptance beyond the MIP community. In this paper, we present a reference XML schema definition (XSD) that has become an integral part of the JC3IEDM 3.0 specification. It provides an object oriented view on the data model and aims at simplifying and accelerating the adoption of the MIP data model in service-oriented architectures and web application development. We provide the use cases and design principles that have lead to this XSD. Moreover, we show how this type of XML schema can be obtained in an automated way from any relational schema in third normal form by applying only structural and syntactic tra...

Individuals are interested in the semantic and not necessarily in the presentation of services. The service interaction has to support the quality of the human senses, and since quality of senses is individual, services have to adapt their presentation to each individual automatically. The concept of Generic User Interaction follows this demand by improving the user interaction by means of intelligent adaptation capabilities. The user shall interact with the objects in the individual communication space in a comfortable and easy-to-use manner, independent of location, time, and the available terminal devices. This paper introduces the basic approach of Generic User Interaction, which specifies a markup language to describe user interaction in a generic way. By using this language, the user interface can be adapted to the respective capabilities of the used terminal and according to the current context as well as according to the individual's preferences.

Application of system theory in biology has led to development of computer languages for mathematical modeling which are in open source and apply common standards for model trans-platform exchangeability and integration with extensive model banks, databases, numerical and statistical methods and graphical tools. Standardization has led to systems biology Markup language (SBML) based on XML format, while open source policy enables integration of computer resources and provides synergistic integration of scientific results and methodologies from various scientific fields. Different software projects have been initiated resulting in software such as: SB Toolbox, J Designer, SB Workbench (SBW), and Cell Designer. The main use of the systems biology software is to investigate biochemical networks, gene regulatory networks, signal transduction, cell communication, dynamical complex behavior, and most importantly to lead to understanding of life regulation. In this work is presented use of systems biology markup language and modeling tools applied for analysis of signal transduction in T-cell as apart of a human immune system.

The initial X3D Earth Technical Requirement Workshop called together leading experts to determine a broad set of technical requirements that will be necessary to construct an X3D Earth. This workshop was held 14-15 November 2006 at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, USA. The main goal in the creation of an Extensible 3D (X3D) Earth will be achieved by Web3D Consortium members who are preparing to build a standards-based suite of software tools usable by governments, industry, scientists, academia and the general public. X3D mappings of world terrain, cartography and imagery will be made available for use in any scene, making it easy to geospatially reference and share X3D models. Open standards, the Web architecture, utilization of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and open protocols will be leveraged throughout. Both commercial and open-source software codebases will be able to utilize these best practices and contribute to these shared assets. The goal...
