Depression is a common disorder that impacts an individual's ability to perform life activities, including those required by the workplace. Academic performance can be viewed as a direct parallel to workforce performance, with students belonging to a unique set of individuals whose ability to perform can be measured on criteria applied by an observer and by self-report. While the prevalence of depression for this group is high and preparation for entry into the workplace is critical for these individuals, this relationship has not been adequately investigated. This study investigates the relationship between depression and its treatments and the academic performance of undergraduate students. Data regarding academics, health and productivity for students from Western Michigan University were obtained from the University's Registrar's Office, the campus Health Center and a survey delivered to the students. The primary outcomes of interest were the student's grade poin...

This paper proposes a nonparametric analysis of the performance of Moroccan commercial banks. The first part of this study focuses on the determination of technical efficiency scores using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). These scores are decomposed on « pure efficiency » and «technological progress » according to Malmquist index. For the studied period (1993-2006), we find a mitigate evolution

We examined relationships between depressive rumination, anger rumination, and features of borderline personality disorder in a sample of 93 students with a wide range of borderline symptoms. All completed self-report measures of borderline features; trait-level negative affect; depressive and anger rumination; and current symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Depressive and anger rumination were strongly associated with borderline features after controlling for comorbid symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Both types of rumination showed significant incremental validity over trait-level sadness, anger, and general negative affect in predicting borderline features. Relationships with borderline features were stronger for anger rumination than for depressive rumination. Relationships between trait-level negative affect and borderline features were substantially reduced when anger rumination was included in regression models, suggesting the need for longitudinal analyse...

The objective of this study was to select regression models to estimate volume, biomass and carbon stock for a cerrado sensu stricto site at Água Limpa Farm in Brasília, Federal District. A total of ten plots of 20x50 m was randomly selected in a 63.54 ha area. Diameter at 30 cm above ground level (Db) and total height of all

Consumer credit risk assessment involves the use of risk assessment tools to manage a borrower’s account from the time of pre-screening a potential application through to the management of the account during its life and possible write-off. The riskiness of lending to a credit applicant is usually estimated using a logistic regression model though researchers have considered many other types of classifier and whilst preliminary evidence suggest support vector machines seem to be the most accurate, data quality issues may prevent these laboratory based results from being achieved in practice. The training of a classifier on a sample of accepted applicants rather than on a sample representative of the applicant population seems not to result in bias though it does result in difficulties in setting the cut off. Profit scoring is a promising line of research and the Basel 2 accord has had profound implications for the way in which credit applicants are assessed and bank policies adopted.

Smallholder farmers in the Kat River Valley do not use output markets effectively due to a number of factors. The technical and institutional factors that demoralise them from marketing are identified in this paper. It is asserted that an explicit analysis in the relationship between technology, institutions and markets may be useful in developing livelihood improving programs. Therefore, by identifying

Data from 137 published trials involving 2,545 calvings were analyzed using random effects normal logistic regression models to identify risk factors for clinical hypocalcemia in dairy cows. The aim of the study was to examine which form, if any, of the dietary cation anion difference (DCAD) equation provided the best estimate of milk fever risk and to clarify roles of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus concentrations of prepartum diets in the pathogenesis of milk fever. Two statistically equivalent and biologically plausible models were developed that predict incidence of milk fever. These models were validated using data from 37 trials excluded from the original data used to generate the models; missing variables were replaced with mean values from the analyzed data. The preferred models differed slightly; Model 1 included prepartum DCAD, and Model 2 included prepartum dietary concentrations of potassium and sulfur alone, but not sodium and chloride. Other factors, included in bot...

Stepwise selection methods are widely applied to identify covariables for inclusion in regression models. One of the problems of stepwise selection is biased estimation of the regression coefficients. We illustrate this “selection bias” with logistic regression in the GUSTO-I trial (40,830 patients with an acute myocardial infarction). Random samples were drawn that included 3, 5, 10, 20, or 40 events per variable (EPV). Backward stepwise selection was applied in models containing 8 or 16 pre-specified predictors of 30-day mortality. We found a considerable overestimation of regression coefficients of selected covariables. The selection bias decreased with increasing EPV. For EPV 3, 10, or 40, the bias exceeded 25% for 7, 3, and 1 in the 8-predictor model respectively, when a conventional selection criterion was used (α = 0.05). For these EPV values, the bias was less than 20% for all covariables when no selection was applied. We conclude that stepwise selection may result in a subst...

In this paper, we assess and compare the performance of French tourism destinations, using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) two-stage procedure, where in the first stage the efficiency score are calculated, and then followed in the second stage by a bootstrapped truncated regression model. In the context of France such analysis takes an additional importance, especially as the country is
