This thesis tries to elucidate and exemplify possible intersections between experimental rock of the late 60s and early 70s and the field of electroacoustic music, focusing mostly on production/compositional techniques and aesthetic approaches. A historical overview of the context which experimental rock emerged from is attempted, exploring why and how certain production techniques were used at that period in rock music and investigating into whether the aesthetic outcome of these techniques relates to experiments in the field of electroacoustic music. Musical examples from the field of classical, jazz and rock styles (including artists like Glenn Gould, Lennie Tristano, Miles Davis, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Fred Frith (Henry Cow) and Frank Zappa) are addressed for the sake of exploring different experimental studio practices. Moreover, a part of this research deals with the creative exploration of the production techniques discussed in order to develop my personal compositional work and eventually to create a framework where a discussion about composing electroacoustic music from the perspective of rock production (and vice-versa!) could emerge.

Pussy Riot’s surprise punk prayer at the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ Our Savior instigated significant controversy in Russia and resulted in the conviction of three Pussy Riot members on the charge of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” While the Russian Orthodox Church swiftly condemned the performance as blasphemous, Pussy Riot has contended that its punk prayer is consistent with the message of the Gospels. This study investigates the punk prayer controversy in relation to the figure of the holy fool, a radical behavioral model canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and secularized in Russia’s literary and artistic traditions.

Küreselleşme bütün ülkeleri etkisi altına alan, çok boyutlu yapısı nedeniyle varlığı kolaylıkla gözlemlenebilen bir olgudur. Küreselleşmenin kültürel boyutu ise küreselleşmenin, toplumlar üzerindeki belirgin etkilerini ortaya çıkaran tarafıdır. Geçmişten beri ülkeleri ve toplumları birbirlerine yaklaştıran kültür akışları küreselleşme ile birlikte hızlanmış, yoğunlaşmıştır. Bu akışlar ile birlikte ülkelere birçok yabancı kültür unsuru giriş yapmış ve toplum yaşamına sirayet etmiştir. Rock müzik ve onun oluşturduğu rock kültürü de bunlardan biridir.
Rock müzik gibi, Batılı ülkelerin ihracı olan unsurlar dışa daha kapalı olan çevre ülkelerde yayılmaya başladıklarında toplum ile aralarında doku uyuşmazlıkları başta olmak üzere birtakım sorunlar meydana gelebilmektedir. Rock’ın Türkiye’deki yaşamı da bu eksende gelişmiştir. Rock müzik ülkemizde birçok formda icra edilmiş, kültürel homojenleşme ve küyerelleşme bağlamında okunabilecek, rock müziğin esas ögeleri ile yerel motiflerin birleştirilmesi suretiyle oluşturulmuş başarılı müzikal üretimlerin yapılmasını sağlamıştır. Bunun yanı sıra rock kültürü de durmaksızın ilerleyen küreselleşmenin etkisiyle dönüşümler geçirmiştir. Bu bağlamda rock’ın bir kültür endüstrisi hâline geldiği, altkültür ve karşı kültür kimliklerinde bozulmalar görüldüğü, protest tavrında yozlaşmalar görüldüğü gibi konular tartışılagelmiştir.
Bütün bu gelişmelere mekân ölçeğinde ışık tutan ve bu dönüşümleri kendisi de yaşayan Kemancı Rock Bar, kıraathaneden rock bara evrilen yapısı ile küreselleşmenin yarattığı dönüşüm sürecini özetleyebilecek verimli bir örnek olarak görülmüştür. Bu sebeple Kemancı, rock kültürünün küreselleşme ile ilişkisinin analiz edilebilmesi açısından uygun bir saha işlevi görmüştür.
Küresel şehirlerin, küreselleşmenin kültürel boyutunun net biçimde gözlemlendiği alanlar olmasından hareketle İstanbul ve Kemancı tezin odak noktası olarak belirlenmiş, rock kültürünün küreselleşme ile bağlantısının bu pencereden bakılarak incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Tezin özgün bir yapı arz etmesi gerektiği düşünüldüğünden bir saha araştırması kurgulanmış, rock kültürüne hâkim ve Kemancı’nın iki dönemine de tanıklık etmiş kişilerle yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat tekniğine dayalı derinlemesine bireysel niteliksel görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular vasıtası ile tezin sorduğu sorular cevaplanmış ve açtığı tartışma başlıklarının altı doldurulmuş, devamında rock kültürünün küreselleşme ve şehirle olan ilişkilerinin nasıl ele alınması gerektiğine dair tartışmacı bir bakış açısıyla yorumlar yapılmış, öneriler getirilmiştir.

In this paper I attempt to contribute to the studies around the aesthetic of the grotesque on rock'n'roll as a form of poetic stylization and, in particular, the imaginary representation of the US band Queens of the Stone Age. The impressions of this aesthetic style seem to represent effectively the anxieties and contradictions of a full sensory stimuli and constant daily shocks that the citizens are exposed nowadays. Through art, the band seeks to raise issues relating to representations about the life of the authors and, later in his reception, associated with the reality of the viewing public by means of subjective imagination of every individual to get in touch with the work of the band.

Los artículos que se recogen en Con la música a otra parte… Entre la política y la sociedad no tienen demasiados elementos en común, aunque sí algunos bien relevantes que justifican la publicación de obra en su conjunto, y su título. Es obvio que todos tratan de música, como no podía ser de otra forma, si bien la que se analiza en cada caso es muy heterogénea, desde el pop y el rock’n’roll al blues, pasando por himnos revolucionarios y por obras de compositores clásicos -como W. A. Mozart, entre otros-, considerando también marchas populares, militares y guerreras, o singularmente festivas, junto a melodías de la privacidad, e interpretaciones – ¿holísticas?- que rememoran otras canónicas o no…; en tiempos y lugares también diversos, y con sistemáticas de aproximación asimismo dispares. Sin embargo, y a la vez, se advierten denominadores comunes: se trata de tratamientos contemporáneos, al margen que versen sobre temas históricos, son cuestiones del vívido presente las que se plantean, con enfoques desprovistos -como corresponde- de prejuicios. Al tiempo, en cada uno de los artículos reunidos, hay una contenida exaltación de la música propuesta, una discreta invitación para escuchar con atención lo que se comenta. Pero en el título ya no cabía esa susurrada propuesta; que implícita también puede estar.

This 1996 book chapter analyses the values that permeated the discourses derived from rock and soul, arguably the two key popular music genres of the 1960s and 1970s, and how popular music studies writers distanced themselves from those discourses, with ambivalent results. It calls for a rather different approach, based on a greater attention to questions of production and aesthetics (both neglected at the time).

For instructors of rock music classes, primary source materials are a valuable pedagogical asset that can bring the history and context of the music to life in vivid fashion. This article examines both the strategies and potential pitfalls of integrating source materials into the syllabus and classroom. Primary documents can help students see history as a multi-vocal process, and can enliven discussions about controversial topics. But the source materials that we choose are also laden with ideologies and values, and using them to construct a narrative of rock history can serve to reinforce the music’s many entrenched myths. I examine the use of primary sources within a historiographical context, showing how they support the stories that we tell about rock music. I conclude by considering some alternative approaches that circumvent rock’s grand master narratives, and suggest some of the different stories that one might tell about rock.

After discussing key concepts such as authenticity, space, time and place, and documentation, the author gives a preliminary definition of live albums, combining available descriptions and comparing them with different typologies and functions of these recordings. The article aims to give a new definition of the concept of live albums, gathering their primary elements: “A live album is an officially released extended recording of popular music representing one or more actually occurred public performances”.

O escapismo é uma condição presente na vida do ser humano, das muitas formas de fugir e transcender, a arte é uma delas e este sentimento foi materializado na obra da banda de rock progressivo Terreno Baldio; especificamente em seu primeiro álbum. Para assimilar como se manifestou tal afeto, a pesquisa é dividida em três partes: Primeiro é apresentada a banda Terreno Baldio, há uma breve biografia com depoimentos dos integrantes remanescentes. Neste primeiro capítulo, dois subcapítulos são dedicados aos álbuns da banda, onde há comentários sobre seus conceitos e canções. Na segunda parte do trabalho, é feita uma revisão sobre os conceitos de contracultura e spleen. A fim de contextualizar o período histórico que o Terreno Baldio estava inserido, é abordada a história do rock progressivo na Europa e no Brasil. Na terceira e última parte da dissertação é analisado o primeiro álbum do Terreno Baldio de 1976. Apoiados nos conceitos apresentados anteriormente, os recursos analíticos elencados para esse processo foram a analise musical e a análise do discurso de linha francesa. Ao analisar as canções do primeiro álbum de forma idiossincrática, vemos uma banda que seguiu os passos das bandas progressivas europeias. Virtuosismo instrumental e lirismo textual em um álbum conceitual, que carregam ineditismo e originalidade ao ambientalizar os conceitos apresentados a realidade brasileira da década de 1970.

I am introducing in this paper the concept of primitive avantgarde
to characterize the experimental musical practice of the late sixties of the Chilean fusion rock band Los Jaivas (1970), a band well known in Chile in the early seventies and of some impact in Argentina and France after its self-exile in 1974. The band was influenced by the Californian hippy culture and a kind of
New Indigenism. They found in Native American people a kind of essential hippy culture, from which they approached two kind of vanguards: free improvisation and large forms of progressive rock. In the next pages I show how I search for the mode of representation of the Amerindian and the construction of a
primitive avant-garde in the improvisation sessions by Los Jaivas and in its associated discourses.

Kültür, tanımlanması oldukça zor bir kavramdır. Yalnızca kavramın tanımlanması üzerine yapılmış çalışmalar, son derece geniş bir literatüre sahiptir. Kültürün, ne olduğunu tanımlamaktan öte, onun, insanların toplumsal ilişkiler çerçevesinde etkileşimi ile ortaya çıktığını söylemek bu bağlamda haddini aşan bir ifade olmayacaktır. Kültürün önemli bileşenlerinden biri, müziktir. Toplumsal ilişkilerin belirlediği çerçevede, kültürün değişim ve dönüşüme uğradığı ölçüde müzik, bu değişim ve dönüşümden doğrudan etkilenmektedir. Bir bölgedeki değişimi izlemek için müziğin geçirdiği evreleri izlemek bize tamamıyla açıklayacak olmasa da, sürece yönelik önemli ipuçları verecektir. Hopa, Türkiye'nin Karadeniz sahil şeridinin son noktasında, uç yerleşim olmanın ötesinde bir öneme sahiptir. Farklı etnik gruplara ev sahipliği yapar. Doğu Karadeniz'e yayılmış kadim halklarından Lazlar, Hemşinliler, Gürcüler, Poşalar, Lomlar gibi otokton halklar, bölgenin en önemli merkezlerinden biri olan Hopa'da uzun yıllardır bir arada yaşamaktadır. Bu bir arada yaşama deneyimi, yer yer gerilimlerle beslenmiş olsa da, kültürel alanda önemli bir zenginliğe kapı aralamaktadır. Çalışma özelinde, Kazım Koyuncu'dan hareketle Laz kültürüne yoğunluk verilmiştir. Lakin bölgede ari bir kültürden söz edilemeyeceğini belirtmekte fayda var. Birbirinden farklı kültürel ögelere sahip olan bölge halklarının, ilçe merkezinde bir araya geldiklerinde dışarıdan bir gözün bu farkı görmesi oldukça zor olacaktır. Hopa'da müzik, tüm Doğu Karadeniz'de olduğu gibi, küçükten büyüğe herkesin bir şekilde temas ettiği özel bir etkinliktir. Farklı etnik kimliklerin, kendilerini ifade etmekte kullandıklarını gördüğümüz müziğin, geleneksel biçiminden müstakil bir başlık olarak bahsedeceğiz. Ancak popüler müzik alanında da Doğu Karadeniz başlıca bir çalışma konusu olacak kadar zengin bir alandır. Bir mücadele alanı olarak popüler müziğin, hegemonyanın her aşamasında Doğu Karadeniz'den bir karşılık verdiğini söylemek elzemdir.

Utilizing the early career of Bruce Springsteen during the 1970s as an example, this article begins to theorize and historicize the relationship between hype as a communicative process and the field of rock criticism. I argue that hype should be understood in three distinct ways: as a result of material changes in the music industry of the period, as a multifaceted discursive process that involved the creation, circulation, and debate of journalistic writing; and as a rhetorical strategy employed by music critics to distance themselves from the aforementioned processes. In working toward a theory of hype, I suggest how it is a critical factor in coming to terms with how rock criticism became an element of promotional culture.

The Arts are under-researched yet overanalyzed. Artists and arts advocates espouse the benefits of arts education and artistic programming, yet there are no clearly identified industry standards or approaches to evaluate such programs. Without an industry-shared evaluative framework, it is difficult to systematically demonstrate the need for financial support of artistic endeavors in an overcrowded arts field. This study takes a small step toward understanding Arts possible effects using evidence-based methods not typically applied to arts fields. One arts organization, Rain City Rock Camp for Girls (RCRC), invited the researcher to examine the efficacy of their educational programming and whether larger societal goals could be accomplished through arts education. Under this premise, the researcher embarked on an 11-month evaluation study of RCRC that states the use of “music education as a tool to foster self-esteem, create community, and encourage social change."" For a greater focus, the researcher concentrated study on South Sound Rocks! (SSR!), RCRC’s newest and smallest rock camp, catered to Youth Campers ages 8-17. Instruments from other fields were used to evaluate effects of a rock music camp including: The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Assessment (1965), The Gap Analysis Framework (Clark & Estes, 2008), Leadership Principles (Ospina & Foldy, 2010), creativity (Guilford, 1950; Torrance, 1974), and others. Findings revealed plausible positive correlations between Rock Camp and increased self-esteem, activated leadership skills, and instigated socially conscious praxis. The researcher proposes interventions for organizational improvement, methods for evaluating efficacy, and concepts for ongoing research. Ultimately the researcher proposes an Arts Efficacy Evaluation Model.

The paper is part of the ‘Back Home’ research project carried out by a group of PhD students from the Polytechnic University of Milan within the framework of the Paquebot Laboratory. The goal of the present research is to reveal historical premises and sociocultural circumstances that provided the basis necessary for the development of the British post-war housing.
As one of the major sociocultural and architectural phenomena in the modern history of Great Britain, the new residential development has been taking shape under the impact of new realities of the post-war life. A descriptive research method has been applied in order to determine the most significant among these realities, such as the exigency of rebuilding and reforming the country immediately after the World War II, economic upheaval of the next two decades, introduction of new governmental policies, multiple cultural tendencies – form the Swinging Sixties to the Electric Eighties – and an intense critical debate of the period.
The study aims to answer the following research questions: what are the preconditions of the British post-war housing phenomenon, and what has determined the emergence of a new generation of architects ready to exploit new approaches to modernism and avant-garde in Great Britain in the 1950s-1980s. Special attention is paid to revealing innovative tendencies of art, fashion, music and cinema, which have transformed the country into the world’s cultural trendsetter for several decades and become a cardinal requirement for the residential development in post-war Great Britain.

The UK’s live music venues play host to significant cultural and heritage value. In recent years the number of active live music venues has dramatically declined. This is largely attributed to a growing number of residential developments. Although there have been recent developments in the National Planning Policy Framework to mitigate the conflict between residential properties and live music venues, this study aims to question whether these changes known as “Agent of Change” go far enough to protect live music venues. It will also present a case for using heritage principles to encourage the preservation of live music venues.

Concerns have been raised that prolonged exposure to heavy metal music with aggressive themes can increase the risk of aggression, anger, antisocial behaviour, substance use, suicidal ideation, anxiety and depression in community and psychiatric populations. Although research often relies on correlational evidence for which causal inferences are not possible, it is often claimed that music with aggressive themes can cause psychological and behavioural problems. This narrative review of theory and evidence suggests the issues are more complicated, and that fans typically derive a range of emotional and social benefits from listening to heavy metal music, including improved mood, identity formation, and peer affiliation. In contrast, non-fans of heavy metal music-who are often used as participants in experimental research on this topic-invariably report negative psychological experiences. Our review considers a comprehensive set of empirical findings that inform clinical strategies designed to identify fans for whom heavy metal music may confer psychological and behavioural risks, and those for whom this music may confer psychosocial benefits.

In this position paper the author presents a perspective on rock drumming and music education. The author is a drummer and university professor who combines an autoethnographic account with consideration of theoretical frameworks including authenticity, flow and the autotelic personality. Through illustrative vignettes of rock drumming and music teaching, the author appeals to the essentially somatic experience of rock drumming. He argues that educators and educational institutions need to allow for rock's inherent, authentic loudness or else risk misrepresenting the music and treating drummers unjustly. This means that the physical movements and resulting high volumes germane to much rock drumming in performance must be accommodated in rehearsals and practice. This article does not seek to privilege rock drumming over other forms, but argues that to include rock drumming authentically in education contexts means to acknowledge and celebrate its essence.

Contar historias escondidas en el mundo de la música popular ayuda a recuperar parte de la memoria colectiva. Esto es lo que han permitido algunas publicaciones dedicadas al rock chileno que incluyen los años 60s, pues le han dado un espacio a bandas como Los Jockers, Los Vidrios Quebrados, Los Beat 4 y Los Mac’s, para volver a contar sus historias y encontrar por primera vez, crítica rock y analizar los aspectos de autenticidad que los caracterizan. Ellos permanecían eclipsados por el fenómeno pop de la Nueva Ola, la irrupción de la Nueva Canción Chilena y más tarde el éxito de Los Jaivas, y por eso tuvieron menos presencia en la prensa de la época.

La revista Cuadernos de ETNOmusicología continúa creciendo, asentándose en el panorama académico y dando cabida tanto a la investigación en música popular desde diferentes perspectivas como a la actualidad de este campo de estudio en el ámbito nacional. En este número las temáticas de los artículos y de los eventos que se recogen son especialmente diversos, lo que demuestra la vitalidad de los estudios sobre música popular como la capacidad de renovación y desarrollo de la etnomusicología como disciplina.
