Movement and, more particularly, kinesthesia as a modality and as a metaphor has become of interest at the intersection of phenomenology and cognitive science. In this paper I wish to combine three historically related strands, aisthêsis, kinesthesis and aesthetics, to advance an argument concerning the aesthetic value of certain somatic sensations. Firstly, by capitalizing on a recent regard for somatic or inner bodily senses, including kinesthesia, proprioception and the vestibular system by drawing lines of historical continuity from earlier philosophical investigations on bodily background experience, initially from aisthêsis, Aristotle’s concept of the sensory faculty. Secondly, concepts of the sensate body are advanced through discoveries in the nervous system and related discussions of the ‘inner’ senses such as Charles Bell’s ‘muscle sense’ (1826), and what Charles Sherrington later termed ‘proprio-ception’ (1906). irdly, we consider the possibility of aesthetic status for those inner senses, where recently aesthetic arguments by Montero (2006) and Cole and Montero (2007) seek to determine aesthetic criteria for proprioception, and similarly in dance theory the aesthetic status of kinesthesia has been questioned (e.g. Foster 2011). Finally we consider whether previous exposure to a ‘grammar’ of movement is a factor in determining the relative aesthetic value.

Rabbi Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira (1889-1943), Rebbe of the Polish Hasidic group of Piaseczna, was one of the outstanding Jewish mystics of the Twentieth Century. In an undated entry in his personal spiritual diary Tsav ve-ziruz, R. Shapira describes an occasion upon which he somersaulted at a Torah Scroll dedication ceremony. This remarkable passage, which has gone largely unnoticed in Piaseczner research, offers a unique insight into R. Shapira's mystical practices and aspirations. In this paper we will briefly survey the literature on Hasidic somersaults, and attempt to unpack the meanings of R. Shapira's description of his own experience. Lastly we will attempt to understand the nature of this mystical technique in the context of other Jewish mystical practices and, based upon the theory of syncope, offer a comparative explanation as to how a somersault can serve as a mystical technique.

Disability Beyond Fabrication. Representation, Embodiment, and the Strategies of "Staring Back" The article analyzes the ways of producing cultural representations of disability in theatre, film, literature and society. It draws attention to their dialectical structure, which problematizes-as in the case of the figure of the disabled avenger from Malina Prześluga's drama "Debil"-a positive going beyond the oppositions of good and evil, agency and passivity. The author emphasizes the need to perceive not only metaphorical but also materialistic dimensions of disability in order to deconstruct and dislocate (and not only duplicate) ableist clichés. The key role in this process is played by the categories of embodiment and lived experience, as well as the strategies of "staring back" (R. Garland-Thomson) used by contemporary Polish artists with disabilities.

Gotipua dance in Odisha - a substitute for Devdasi/Mahari dance after the latter was banned, gotipua dance emerged where young boys dressed like a female dance in the temple during festive season. The talk dealt with the subjective experiences of these dancers as to what happens to them when they have to leave this form of dance after they arrive at a certain age. How is their dancing as a female perceived in the society? What happens to their post-dance lives? What kind of negotiations and transitions they undergo in their lives?

In two experiments, we used an automatic car simulator to examine the steering control, speed regulation and response to hazards of young adults with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and limited driving experience. In Experiment 1 participants either used the accelerator pedal to regulate their speed, or used the brake pedal when they needed to slow down from a pre-set speed. In Experiment 2, we introduced an auditory distraction condition that shared similarities with maintaining a conversation. Overall, the DCD group produced a larger variance in heading and needed more steering adjustments on straight roads, compared to age-matched controls. When turning bends, the DCD group showed greater difficulty in controlling steering while regulating their speed with the accelerator pedal but this was less problematic when using the brake. The DCD group also responded slower than the control group to pedestrians who walked towards their path. The auditory distraction in Experiment 2 had no visible effects on steering control but increased the reaction times to pedestrians in both groups. We discuss the results in terms of the visuomotor control in steering and the learning of optimal mappings between optic flow and vehicle control.

The Coronavirus pandemic has once again placed the body at the center of political and social debate. However, questions about its status were already relevant before the virus and remain key issues in many conflicts that continue to have a decisive influence on the world. However, what does it mean for an individual body, for the body of a collective, to be safe or unharmed? How is the idea of the integrity of a body linked to how we imagine, experience, represent or define a body? To what extent is it also a matter of aesthetics, of performance? And, what is our responsibility when it comes to create visibility and agency for bodies that are under physical or symbolic attack? Here the question also arises of which bodies we deem worthy of ethical recognition and legal protection.
The online-series Unversehrtheit: Conversations on the Integrities of the Body, initiated by curator and scholar Sandra Noeth brings together international artists and researchers across different disciplines and fields of practice to take a close look at the body and its possible integrities. Discussion-based encounters between experts (In Conversation #1-#7) are combined with dramaturgical sessions (Dramaturgical Perspectives #1-#4) focusing on strategies and practices that artists develop in response to their specific experiences.

In the last century the progress of technology applied to biology, robotics, neuroscience have flowed into the algorithmic landscape "freeing" spaces of hybridization and contamination. Multimedia arts and new artistic practices have called into question some historical axioms, such as the concept of authorship and uniqueness of the work. An "earlier future" of communication and connection is opening up, increasingly extended and ready to give us a collective imagination capable of interpreting epochal changes. Techno- logical art and its experiments have "activated" in the kaleidoscopic gaze of art a performative connective action where art, life and politics are integrated in a "battle" between democratization processes of the network and information and mediated by "liberated" bodies. This is a story of many possible stories, where care fulfills its function in the connection between media and experience amplified by the artistic practice of a New Living for an ecosystemic culture. The body-device with all its possibilities is disseminat- ed in the network, reinventing the real and the disease and creating "augmented" spaces for criticism, for expression, for action and for a "ubiquitous salvation". The great opportunity of existence is to express oneself "po(i)etically" through data to generate an existential debate in culture.

In this paper I will discuss some concerns that the creative team of Umbilical , a collaborative multimedia arts project of which I am conceptual director, faced regarding the portrayal of female sexual identity through the embodied and representational media of dance and digital image. Representing the erotic raises creative challenges for any artist. Representing the female erotic raises particular conceptual and aesthetic challenges, provoking concerns regarding the ubiquitous, yet often apocryphal and arbitrary, nature of cultural and social signifiers inscribed upon female sexual identity. Visual and embodied media which are marked by such cultural signifiers inscribed upon female sexual identity often belie or fail to do justice to the immanent and intimate nature of individual female sexual and erotic experience. As representational, embodied and performative media, dance and digital image risk an over exposition of the intimacy of sexual experience: the intrinsic is made extrinsic. In this paper I will address some of the most challenging conceptual and aesthetic concerns that the creative team have attempted to address in Umbilical such as how to negotiate with such manufactured signifiers for the sexual/sexualised, erotic/eroticised female viewed body.

The relations between body, space, and time are of interest for many architects and
theorists. Body and space, considered separately, form discrete wholes. However,
bringing the two together reveals their interdependence. This research emerges
from that perspective: that body and space must be considered in relationship.
They are also affiliated with time through performance: specifically for this paper,
art and architecture. Body disturbs the order of the space, and space violates and
ruins the body.1 Both are apt to violate and ruin the expected behaviour of the other
one. This relation is termed ‘manipulation tension’ in this research. Space tends to
manipulate the body using its spatial compulsivity and intangible aura. Body also
has the same tendency on space and positions itself using methods such as
movement, perception, sensation, and events. Body and space come into balance
using their own manipulation methods. This balance is not a mutual reversion to
the neutral state. It is an equilibrium based on stress, which comes from their
natural tendencies. The purposes of this research are to study the aforementioned
subjects (body and space), reveal their methods (perception, sensation, movement,
kinesis, events, and spatial configuration), and highlight the ‘performance
moments’ that can be correlated with time. In this research, space is considered as
a structure in relation with body. It is built through experience and performatives.
Body is acknowledged as a concept - from a perspective of physical and
intellectual integrity - which sustains its contextual relation to the space it exists.
This research explicates an analogy of artistic and architectural examples, which
approach ‘performance’ using body (contemporary art) and space (architecture).

The PhD dissertation Cyberpunk and New Media Art: Digital Art and Performance aims to examine the literary and visual legacy of the Cyberpunk movement and to explore its ideas, concepts and methodologies in the context of New Media artistic practices. The goal of this work is to comment on a multidisciplinary level on the influence of Cyberpunk theory and aesthetics. Furthermore, it seeks to identify its practice in the construction of the creative mechanisms of contemporary digital art and media performance.
The Cyberpunk phenomenon is approached through the definition of its socio- historical, philosophical and aesthetic context as a science fiction genre. Likewise, New Media Art is defined through the characteristics of its language, its precursors, its pioneers and the state of the digital art currents. By focusing on the terminology and the creative expression of Cyberpunk and Media Art, this thesis sets off to examine the artistic results that emerge from their union. Special emphasis is given to the fields of virtual technologies, technology and mythology and the body as a technologically enhanced interface.

"In this study we examined the timing of optical information pick-up in basketball jump shooting using an intermittent viewing technique. We expected shooters to prefer to look at the basket as late as possible under the shooting style used. Seven experts with a high shooting style and five experts with a low shooting style took 50 jump shots while wearing liquid crystal glasses that opened and closed at pre-set intervals. In principle, under this constraint, the participants could control
when they saw the basket by actively modulating the timing of their movements. Analyses of the phasing of the movements relative to the events defined on the glasses revealed that low-style shooters preferred to see the basket just before the ball passed their line of sight, whereas high-style shooters tended to view the basket from underneath the ball after it passed their line of sight. Thus, most shooters preferred to pick up optical information as late as possible given the adopted shooting style. We conclude that, in dynamic far aiming tasks such as basketball jump shooting, late pick-up of optical information is critical for the successful guidance of movements."

This paper examines various depictions of the female body on-screen in Haseena Atom Bomb (dir. Saeed Khan, 1990), by a close reading of the picturization of the three main female characters: Haseena, Shabana and Reshma (with an emphasis upon Haseena). The paper explores the physicality of these characters, the various factors that accompany or aid the depiction of their bodies on screen (including the roles of camera, editing, and mise-en-scène), and the broader narrative themes intertwined with the depiction of the female body in a rape-revenge film. It also investigates the female body's various transitions from being recipient of violence to a perpetrator of violence and vice versa, discussing the implications of these various representations alongside each other-and whether they allow for us to observe changing representations of the female body on-screen in Pakistani cinema.

The Kyoto School philosophers, Nishida Kitaro, Tanabe Hajime, etc., produced theoretical discourses of the body in 1930's, which foreran Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of the body. This paper reveals the process of their discussion and examines how those metaphysical debates on the body that appeared in modern Japan(日本的「身体論」) fell into cultural essentialism(「日本的身体」論).

Most contemporary scholarly work on posthumanism and transhumanism rests on the idea that both perspectives are part of an ontological continuum. This article, however, acknowledges and explores the differences between them. In order to prove that evident theoretical –and, therefore, practical– differences exist between both positions, a genealogy of their development from the 1980s is proposed. The definition of the two different ontologies associated to each of the discussed positions is followed by an analysis of the consequences that this theoretical separation would have for research. This paper also lays out a revision of their epistemologies and their ethical and practical implications. To conclude, we offer a contextualized justification of why the two discussed positions are actually antithetic, and how considering them as such would be useful for future research in the field.

Performanso meno laukas, kartu su vizualiųjų menų lauku, Lietuvoje patiria itin didelę atskirtį, nes yra
subordinuotas tiek meno, tiek kitų laukų atţvilgiu. Neretai performanso menas, apskritai, nėra laikomas meninio
diskurso dalimi.
