This study explored the possible effects of watching Korean TV drama on the patriotism of students. The rise of Hallyu 1.0 or Korean TV drama to popularity in the mid-1990s became possible through the help of media. Three theories were utilized to explain the successful proliferation of K-drama in Asian countries: Cultural Proximity Theory, Media Dependency Theory, and Uses and Gratifications Theory. However, despite the success of Hallyu, anti-Hallyu movements have been formed across Asia, eliciting different explanations from experts, one of which is linked to the concept of patriotism. In order to validate the relationship, the researchers conducted an in-depth interview with five K-drama fans and five non-fans, and compared and contrasted the patriotism of the members of each group in relation to K-drama consumption. In this study, patriotism is defined as the pride one feels for his country. The results showed that participants are both proud of being a Filipino and of the Philippines regardless of K-drama consumption. However, this pride tends to be less manifested in the actions of K-drama fans as opposed to non-fans, because said fans prefer Korean TV drama to Filipino TV drama. K-drama fans patronize K-drama merchandise over Filipino drama merchandise, and finds patronizing the latter embarrassing. Furthermore, K-drama fans compared the Filipino culture to South Korean culture wherein they perceive the latter as superior over the former. Hence, the researchers concluded that watching K-dramas negatively affects the patriotism of students. However, the relationship is deemed to be substantially weak due to: (a) conflicting data, and (b) arbitrary nature of patriotism, since the subjective nature of ―pride‖ warrants its absence of manifestation without constituting to unpatriotic values. Nevertheless, this study is still significant since it will alert concerned authorities on the negative effects of K-dramas on patriotism and will urge them to respond accordingly.

This study examines the associations, and possible causal relationship, between mothers' authoritarian attitudes to discipline and child behaviour using cross-sectional and prospective data from a large population sample surveyed in the 1970 British Cohort Study. Results show a clear linear relationship between the degree of maternal approval of authoritarian child-rearing attitudes and the rates of conduct problems at age 5 and age 10. This association is independent of the confounding effects of socio-economic status and maternal psychological distress. Maternal authoritarian attitudes independently predicted the development of conduct problems 5 years later at age 10. The results of this longitudinal study suggest that authoritarian parenting attitudes expressed by mothers may be of significance in the development of conduct problems.

Limited data are available on the prevalence and patterns of body weight discrimination from representative samples. This study examined experiences of weight/height discrimination in a nationally representative sample of US adults and compared their prevalence and patterns with discrimination experiences based on race and gender. Data were from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, a 1995-1996 community-based survey of English-speaking adults aged 25-74 (N=2290). Reported experiences of weight/height discrimination included a variety of institutional settings and interpersonal relationships. Multivariate regression analyses were used to predict weight/height discrimination controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and body weight status. The prevalence of weight/height discrimination ranged from 5% among men to 10% among women, but these average percentages obscure the much higher risk of weight discrimination among heavier individuals (40% for adu...

Despite the wide applaud about social media’s capacity to allow public participation in content creation and circulation, they do not automatically ensure open and transparent communication because of institutional and cultural constraints. Our study of the use of social media during the H1N1 flu epidemic in the U.S. and China demonstrates that governmental apparatuses may use social media tools for one-way dissemination of risk decisions and policies or limited two-way risk communication. In contrast, the general public may circumvent the institutional control of risk information through extra-institutional participatory risk communication to find out truths about the emerging risks

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies play a very significant role in making metallic/nonmetallic prototypes or products in layered fashion. The main goal of these technologies is to produce fully dense and net shaped metal/non-metal parts in single step. Some additive manufacturing technologies such as Selective Laser Sintering and Laser Engineered Net Shaping are dominating processes while Laminated Object Manufacturing has also been used. This paper tries to present a comparative picture of the different additive manufacturing technologies.

In this introduction to the Focus Section “Learning as a Geographical Process,” I provide a context for the four articles that follow, by means of (1) making explicit the threefold rationale for this initiative; (2) relating this initiative with previous geographical scholarship on the problematic of learning; (3) highlighting the significance of the self-referential character of our work; (4) providing a brief outline of the articles that follow; and (5) pointing out the important fact that both “learning” and “geographical process” constitute semantically rich categories and that relating the two involves a many-to-many type of logical mapping.

This paper analyzes changes in regional electoral behavior and attitudes towards separatism and foreign policy orientation in Ukraine after the “Orange Revolution” and the “Euromaidan,” which turned into a violent internal conflict and one of the biggest international conflicts involving Western countries and Russia. The research question is whether the regional divisions concerning domestic politics, separatism and foreign orientation have changed significantly in Ukraine since the “Orange Revolution” in 2004 and the “Euromaidan” in 2014. This paper employs comparative and statistical analyses of voting results of the 2012, 2007, 2006, and 2002 parliamentary elections, and the 2014, 2010, and 2004 presidential elections, to examine effects of historical legacies, ethnicity, language, age, and economic factors on regional support for pro-nationalist/pro-Western and pro-Russian/pro-communist political parties and presidential candidates. The study also analyses support for separatism in Crimea and Donbas after the “Orange Revolution” and the “Euromaidan.” It uses a brief survey, conducted for this study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) in April and May 2014, to examine determinants of pro-separatist attitudes. The paper also employs Razumkov Center and KIIS surveys to analyze changes in 2002-2014 in regional preferences for joining the European Union (EU), NATO, and a union with Russia. The analysis shows that Ukraine after the “Orange Revolution” remained divided along regional lines in terms of support for political parties and presidential candidates and attitudes towards joining the EU, NATO, and a Russia-led union. After the “Euromaidan,” such divisions in foreign policy orientation and, to a lesser extent, support for presidential candidates and political parties remained. A significant rise in separatist sentiments helped to fuel separatist takeovers of power in Crimea and Donbas and Russian military intervention in these regions.

This paper argues that, in order to take place, space and scale more seriously in the study of our discipline, we have to complement the pervasive understanding of geography as a tradition of thought or an extended conversation with an understanding of our discipline as a tradition of practice, in which the main focus is on the becoming of geographers. It is argued that the theme of 'what it takes to be a good geographer' is a fertile way to study this process of becoming. The four main advantages of this approach are illustrated empirically in the body of the argument by the author's reflections on his socializing within two very different geographical traditions.

Credit card fraud is a serious and growing problem. While predictive models for credit card fraud detection are in active use in practice, reported studies on the use of data mining approaches for credit card fraud detection are relatively few, possibly due to the lack of available data for research. This paper evaluates two advanced data mining approaches, support vector machines and random forests, together with the well-known logistic regression, as part of an attempt to better detect (and thus control and prosecute) credit card fraud. The study is based on real-life data of transactions from an international credit card operation.
