Measurements of acoustic input impedance of wind instruments using two different approaches are presented. In the first approach, c ommonly referred to as the two-microphone transfer function method, a tube is connected to the instrument and excited with broad-band noise. Signals recorded at microphone pairs placed along the tube are then analyzed to estimate the instrument input impedance. A calibration step is described, wherein the position of each microphone pair is determined from the measurement of a rigid termination. The second technique, a novel variant of pulse reflectometry, ma kes use of a long tube with a single microphone located at its midpoint. Using a long-duration broad-band stimulus, the impulse response is measured for the tube, first with a rigid termination, and then with the system to be characterized attached. The system reflectance, and therefore its impedance, is found by comparing the first reflection from the tube end for both measurements. The d esign of...

This paper presents ArchiTRIO (Architectural TRIO), a new temporal logic language which combines a subset of the UML notation with a precise formal semantics inspired from the authors’ experiences. ArchiTRIO allows developers to use standard UML 2.0 notation to describe non-critical aspects of systems, but it also offers a complementary formal notation, fully integrated with the UML one, to represent those system aspects that require precise modeling.

Embedded systems are typically implemented as a set of communicating components some of which are implemented in hardware and some of which are implemented in software. Usually many software components share a processor. A real-time operating system (RTOS) is used to enable sharing and provide a communication mechanism between components. Commercial RTOSs are available for many popular micro-controllers. Using them provides significant reduction in design time and often leads to better structured and more maintainable systems. However, since they have to be quite general, they are not efficient enough for many applications, either in memory usage or in run times. Thus, it is often the case that RTOSs are hand coded by an expert for a particular application. This approach is obviously slow, expensive and error-prone.In this paper we propose an alternative where a RTOS is automatically generated based on a high-level description of the system. RTOSs created in our approach offer an ea...

This paper presents an extension to the technology acceptance model (TAM) and empirically examines it in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation environment. The study evaluated the impact of one belief construct (shared beliefs in the benefits of a technology) and two widely recognized technology implementation success factors (training and communication) on the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use during technology implementation. Shared beliefs refer to the beliefs that organizational participants share with their peers and superiors on the benefits of the ERP system. Using data gathered from the implementation of an ERP system, we showed that both training and project communication influence the shared beliefs that users form about the benefits of the technology and that the shared beliefs influence the perceived usefulness and ease of use of the technology. Thus, we provided empirical and theoretical support for the use of managerial interventions, such a...

The prototype decision support system (PDSS) described within this paper represents one of the first of its kind in the urban forest/civil engineering research arena. The primary objective of this research was to develop a user-friendly, intuitive PDSS that provides users with tools for improved micro-management of the urban forest canopy. The secondary objective was to generate further discussion with

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in combination with gas chromatogra- phy/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) analysis offers a simple and sensitive option for analyzing objects that have been contaminated with volatile and semi-volatile organic pesticides. In this project, items from the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) were placed in plastic bags and allowed to sit overnight. A SPME fiber was then inserted into the bag, exposed for approximately one hour, and analyzed by GC/MS. Naphthalene and para-di- chlorobenzene were found on several objects. It may also be possible to detect other semi- volatile pesticides. A privately owned piece of reproduction trade cloth was studied more extensively to evaluate equilibrium times and reproducibility. Raising the humidity within the bag substantially increased the release of pesticides from the cloth. This preliminary project demonstrated that this simple setup is practical. Its ease of use and minimal effect on the object make it attr...

This research investigates the applicability of Davis' technology acceptance model to user acceptance of a knowledge management information system. It addresses two important questions: "Does the technology acceptance model explain user acceptance and usage of an information system implemented to support knowledge management objectives?" ''Can previous technology acceptance model user acceptance research serve as a basis for investigation of user acceptance of knowledge management information technology systems?" This study provides preliminary evidence that previous information technology acceptance research based on the technology acceptance model, may serve as a foundation for research of knowledge management system user acceptance. Relationships among primary TAM constructs are in substantive agreement with those characteristic of previous TAM research. Significant positive relationships between perceived usefulness, ease of use, and system usage were consistent with previous TAM research. The observed mediating role of perceived usefulness in the relationship between ease of use and usage was also in consonance with earlier findings. The findings are significant because they suggest that the considerable body of previous TAM related information technology research may be usefully applied to the knowledge management domain, and promote further investigation of factors affecting the user acceptance and usage of knowledge management information systems.

The credibility of web sites is becoming an increasingly important area to understand. To expand knowledge in this domain, we conducted an online study that investigated how different elements of Web sites affect people's perception of credibility. Over 1400 people participated in this study, both from the U.S. and Europe, evaluating 51 different Web site elements. The data showed which

E-commerce marketing channel is a media that fully mediated by information technology, depriving the intrinsic attributes of services, and creating information asymmetry. Information asymmetry can reduce consumer ability to evaluate services effectively, hence posing a challenge to service providers. Signaling theory provides a framework for understanding how extrinsic attributes (signals) can be used by service providers to communicate the information quality of services to consumers. This paper proposes a model to investigate how the quality of a university official website acts as a signal of quality of university education as commercial service. This research divides university website quality into several dimensions: reliability, responsiveness, functionality, ease of use, information quality, and visual appeal. Questionnaires are distributed to third year students of senior high schools around Jakarta to observe the quality of university website based on those dimensions. Based on the analysis of the 117 questionnaires, the conclusion is that the quality of a university website influences the perception of the quality of university education, which eventually affects the intentions of prospective students to enroll to the university.

US Environmental Protection Agency Method 300.0 specifies the use of an IonPac AS4A anion-exchange column with a carbonate–hydrogencarbonate eluent and suppressed conductivity detection for the determination of inorganic anions in environmental waters by ion chromatography. Hydroxide eluents have not typically been used for the routine analysis of common inorganic anions due to the lack of an appropriate hydroxide selective column

As more and more businesses move online, research into the determinants and measurement of online service quality has become a research imperative (Zeithaml et al., 2000; Bitner, Parasuraman et al., 2005). Notwithstanding, research in this area is still in its infancy and much of the existing research is largely anecdotal, centering on consumer perceptions and ignoring the business customer perspective.

The natural interaction aspects of the user interface are more significant in the devices of impaired users than the devices of healthy users. This work investigates three controls as the wheelchair controllers according to the design and physicality principles; conventional joystick, isometric joystick, and quad-directional button. Our aim is to provide further ease of use to the impaired whilst strengthening link between embedded software engineering and human-computer interaction. We conclude that an improved multi-function interface design by using Nintendo‘s Wiimote quad-directional button is more intuitive, flexible and natural to use.
