European voters can be classified into different groups according to the Political Group of the European Parliament the MEP they have voted for is attached to. In the first part of the paper we build clusters of EU countries according to the distribution of the country MEPs to the Political Groups. We find two large clusters of memberstates. One of the two large clusters includes countries from the central and northern Europe and the other cluster includes countries from southern Europe. In the second part of the paper we study the social characteristics of the voters in each political group. Using a series of socio-structural variables, (i.e. subjective social class, education level, standard of living, and religiosity), from the PIREDEU voter survey data, we try to describe the social profile of the voters in each group. Then we study the social profiles of the voters in each group in these two large clusters of EU countries. There are political groups that display strong associat...

From time to time, economies undergo far-reaching structural changes. In this paper we investigate the consequences of structural breaks in the factor loadings for the specification and estimation of factor models based on principal components and suggest test procedures for structural breaks. It is shown that structural breaks severely inflate the number of factors identified by the usual information criteria. Based on the strict factor model the hypothesis of a structural break is tested by using Likelihood-Ratio, Lagrange-Multiplier and Wald statistics. The LM test which is shown to perform best in our Monte Carlo simulations, is generalized to factor models where the common factors and idiosyncratic components are serially correlated. We also apply the suggested test procedure to a US dataset used in Stock and Watson (2005) and a euro-area dataset described in Altissimo et al. (2007). We find evidence that the beginning of the so-called Great Moderation in the US as well as the Maastricht treaty and the handover of monetary policy from the European national central banks to the ECB coincide with structural breaks in the factor loadings. Ignoring these breaks may yield misleading results if the empirical analysis focuses on the interpretation of common factors or on the transmission of common shocks to the variables of interest.

This study is an anatomical study designed to benefit surgeons working in the region of the maxillary sinus. This paper investigates ethnic and gender variations in the shape of the maxillary sinus in dried crania from the Raymond Dart collection of human skeletons. The paper claims that an estimate of the area of the medial antral wall of the maxillary sinus is one of the best ethnic/gender group predictors. Helical, multislice computed tomography was performed using 1mm coronal slices length, depth, width and volume measurements for each sinus were taken. Classification by shape and estimated area of medial wall was attempted. Shape classification was found to be unsuccessful whilst medial wall classification into ethnic/gender groupings gave encouraging results. The area of the medial wall is related to ethnic/gender groups.

Multi-proxy approach was used to reconstruct the environmental conditions of remote lakes in the High Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) over the past few centuries (approximately 500-1000 years). Short sediment cores (*30 cm) taken from three morphologically similar glacial lakes distributed along altitudinal gradient (subalpine to alpine conditions) were analysed for organic matter content (LOI), diatoms and chironomids. Both descriptive and correlative approaches were used for analysing stratigraphical data. Predictive canonical correspondence analysis and co-correspondence analysis were applied to directly relate physical and biological proxies to each other. The relationship between LOI and biotic proxies was inconsistent across groups and lakes. Concordant patterns in diatom and chironomid composition were found in two non-acidified lakes. Common trends in those assemblages indicated major past environmental events such as the Little Ice Age, air pollution and lake acidification. In contrast, no relationship between the composition of diatom and chironomid assemblages was found in the formerly acidified lake, suggesting different responses of assemblages to acidification. While chironomids showed shifts that are attributable to recovery, diatoms assemblage remained relatively stable throughout the uppermost layers of the sediment record. On the other hand, climatic-driven changes in assemblages detected in the deeper layers were more pronounced in diatoms than in chironomids.

For poets Elizabeth Bishop and Gabriela Mistral, the potential of Portuguese saudade was an answer to the crises of alienation and identity they faced as exiles. Drawing upon their poetry, correspondence, and translations of Lusophone literature, this paper examines how, by engaging with this foreign concept, both queer women poets living outside of their respective homelands engaged with their own senses of isolation and unhomeliness. Describing the potential of saudade in an endnote to the section titled "Saudade" in Tala, her third volume of poetry first published in 1938, Mistral states "I firmly believe, with Stefan George, in a future of borrowing language to language in Latin America. At least, in the case of certain words, clear achievements of the genius of each language, unshakable expressions within their range of 'true' words" (2003 p. 244). Both poets turned to this word as they were reconciling the heteronormative forces displacing them within their homelands. Ultimately, Bishop and Mistral mobilize the notion to address the traumas of displacement, loss, and sexual difference as they explore the 'truth' and nuance of the word through their writings.

The present study illustrates the use of computer-aided text analysis to evaluate the content of open-ended survey responses. During an in-hall test, different varieties of mayonnaise were evaluated by 165 respondents on a 10-point liking scale, with the option to freely comment on these assessments. An expert panel assessed the main sensory characteristics of the mayonnaises. Usually, preference mapping is applied to find out which sensory attributes drive consumer preferences for products. As an alternative, we will use the consumer statements to investigate this relationship. By counting words and looking at word combinations, we will use correspondence analysis to construct a visualization that is comparable to a preference map. Results from the analyses of the verbal responses are compared with the results from preference mapping. The agreement between the correspondence map and the preference map is striking, with the additional advantage being that the correspondence map is stated in terms of consumer language. The textual map is also in line with consumer understanding about creaminess. It appears that respondents find it easier to comment on their dislikes than on their likes. Some advantages and disadvantages of analyzing open-ended survey responses are also addressed. #

The purpose of this study was to examine purchase motives of pleasure travel components of low and high complexity in a Web environment. Motives to buy travel components of a typical pleasure vacation were differentiated using the economics of search framework and mapped using correspondence analysis. Findings showed a uni-dimensional solution that was named informational/transactional. While purchase of activities, accommodation, events and attractions demanded more informational contexts behind purchase; purchase of car rentals and airline tickets were driven by transactional contexts. Theoretical and marketing implications are discussed. r

This contribution deals with Alecsander Sokolovski's short letter to a Romanian acquaintance, describing his two different experiences as a traveller, while looking for accommodation in 19 th century Moldavia. Despite what he was expecting for, Alecsander Sokolovski was not well received by one of the great boyars of the time, Iordache Latescu-Boldur. Starting from this incident, he questioned the good education and the renowned hospitality of the Romanian elite.

The use of Orbital Correspondence Analysis in Maximum Symmetry (OCAMS) for determining the allowed course of a reaction is described in terms of the familiar "A, S" notation. Several well known thermal and photochemical reactions are used as examples : Polyene cyclization; the fragmentation and dimerization of cyclobutadiene; [.4 + A2] cycloaddition; the isomerization of Dewar-benzene. The relation of OCAMS to the classical correlation procedures of Woodward and Hoffmann and of Longuet-Higgins and Abrahamson is brought out, as are the sources of the occasionally contradictory predictions of OCAMS and of the classical procedures.

Correspondence Analysis (CA) is a statistical method aiming at the graphical representation of the contingencies between the rows and the columns of a categorical data set. A critical step of the CA algorithm is the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) analysis of a coded matrix. The size of this matrix affects drastically the analysis computational cost. As the size of the matrix increases, the method becomes computationally expensive or even impossible. In this paper we propose an alternative scheme that overpasses this limitation, without affecting the results accuracy. A set of Monte Carlo simulations and real data applications showed the efficiency of the proposed approach over the standard one, especially in the case of "tall" data sets.

Surveys were conducted in the Philippines from 1995 to 1997 to examine relationships between production environment variables (agroecosystem, synchrony of planting, and varieties planted) and the occurrence of rice tungro disease epidemics using correspondence analyses. The sites covered were Isabela, Nueva Ecija, North Cotabato, and Bohol provinces as well as Bicol region. Tungro disease incidence in farmers' "elds was assessed visually based on typical symptoms. In addition, leaf samples were collected from each "eld and indexed serologically by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the presence of Rice tungro bacilliform (RTBV) and Rice tungro spherical (RTSV) viruses. Thus, relationships between the production environment variables and four disease variables * visual incidence and double RTBV and RTSV, single RTSV, and single RTBV infections * were examined. A higher association was observed between site and varieties planted as well as site and synchrony of planting than between site and agroecosystem or site and disease variables (visual incidence, double RTBV and RTSV and single RTSV infections). Disease variables depended on both varieties planted and synchrony of planting and correspondence analysis revealed that the low disease incidence in Nueva Ecija was associated with synchronous planting while the high disease incidence in Isabela was associated with the planting of susceptible varieties and asynchronous planting. Such "ndings suggest that the relationship between the last two factors at a given site is critical to predicting tungro occurrence. Moreover, correspondence analysis of the relationship among disease variables revealed that tungro incidence is associated with not only double RTBV and RTSV infections but also single RTSV infections. Implications of these results on tungro epidemiology and management are discussed.

Following the question posed by Maria Hermínia Laurel in her excellent article entitled « Lectures d'écrivains : 'vision du monde' et référents littéraires dans la correspondance d'Alice Rivaz » (2010), we propose to question the auctorial constructions that conceal Alice Rivaz's correspondence. Swiss author of the French language, she multiplies the constructions of a self-author not only in her literary work, which she will sign with a pen name, but also in her prolific correspondence with three contemporary Swiss authors, which we propose to study here.

The biogeography of Antarctic demosponges has been studied by dividing Antarctic and circumantarctic areas into geographic entities, and then assigning to these entities all recorded species according to literature reports. Correspondence analysis ordination based on the presence or absence of species shows the existence of a distinct Antarctic Faunistic Complex (AFC), including continental Antarctica, most of the Antarctic and circumantarctic islands and the Magellan area. Such a result has enabled us to drawup a checklist of 352 Antarctic demosponge species. Investigation of within-AFC patterns indicates that the continent is a highly homogeneous area, establishing closer relationships with the Scotia Arc and to a lesser extent with the Magellan region. The AFC has low specific affinities with the other circumantarctic regions (South Africa, temperate Australia and New Zealand), whereas at the generic level relationships appear more pronounced. This biogeographic pattern may lead us to suppose a common Gondwanian origin for Antarctic and circumantarctic sponge faunas, followed by differentiation due to Gondwana fragmentation. Antarctica moved towards polar latitudes and became progressively isolated, only maintaining active interchanges with South America. Climatic changes possibly induced intense processes of speciation in the Antarctic demosponge fauna, thus contributing to its differentiation.

This work deals with the use of multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and a weighted Euclidean distance (the tolerance distance) as an exploratory tool in developing predictive logistic models. The method was applied to a living-donor kidney transplant data set with 109 cases and 13 predictors. This approach, followed by backward and forward selection procedures, yielded two models, one with four and another with two predictors. These models were compared to two other models, ordinarily built by backward and forward stepwise selection, which yielded, respectively, five and two predictors. After internal validation, the models performance statistics showed similar results. Likelihood ratio tests suggested that backward approach achieved a better fit than the forward modelling in both methods and the Vuong's non-nested test between backward-built models suggested that these were undistinguishable. We conclude that the tolerance distance, in combination with MCA, could be a feasible method for variable selection in logistic modelling, when there are several categorical predictors. c o m p u t e r m e t h o d s a n d p r o g r a m s i n b i o m e d i c i n e 9 5 ( 2 0 0 9 ) 116-128 117 1.

When comparing to the bussines letters of another significant woman author of the time, Jelena J.Dimitrijević, Janković's bussines letters have the same direct and straightforward rhetoric. She percieved herself as a competent mediator bewteen her literary works and a market. She proposed all of her deals as objective evaluations. Unlike some of her private letters addressed to her friend, she wrote to Isidor Đurđević in a kind and cordial way however keeping the professional distance. Thus her written communication offers a wide range of information helping the reconstruction of her gender identity.

Blockchain technologies are predicted to substantially transform the tourism industry. At present, cryptocurrencies are the most advanced application of public blockchains that promise benefits such as a universal means of payment and minimal fees through the removal of intermediaries. In the tourism industry, though many tourism vendors have been accepting cryptocurrencies and the potential of using cryptocurrencies in travel-related consumption has been intensively documented, existing knowledge about travelers’ intention to use cryptocurrencies for payment purposes is limited. Traditional models do not account for the idiosyncrasies of cryptocurrencies and are therefore less appropriate to foster the understanding of travelers’ adoption of travel-related payments. To fill this knowledge gap, an exploratory study was conducted with 161 travelers from the Asia-Pacific region who have previously consumed travel-related services with cryptocurrencies. Their previous usage experiences are analyzed and reported. Through harnessing the correspondence analysis, several technological contingency factors were identified, as well as positive and negative perceptual antecedents. Additionally, their levels of satisfaction and intention to re-use the technology in future trips were investigated. Based on these findings, several propositions are suggested for guiding future research on travelers’ cryptocurrency adoption in the travel and tourism contexts.

There are many personal pronouns in Japanese, and we use them in our daily lives depending on our position and relationship with others. How characters in games use personal pronouns is also determined by the various attributes that each character possesses. This study examines the correlation between the two in otome games released between 2017 and 2021. The study used correspondence analysis to examine the attributes of the main male characters and the patterns of personal pronouns they used, based on a crosstabulation table created from data for approximately 500 characters. Comparing the results with those for characters in women's novels published during the same period, we found that there were significantly more personal pronouns used in otome games than in novels, and that personal pronouns with the same sound but different kanji and kana spellings were independently influenced by character attributes.

Mixture designs and corresponding analysis techniques are of considerable importance in food science and industry. Mixture data are generally challenging to model, since the mixture restrictions leads to both exact and near collinearity. Scheffé found an excellent way to eliminate the exact collinearity, by using a certain reparameterization of the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model. Near collinearities can be eliminated by, for instance, variable selection. Partial least squares (PLS) regression does not assume linearly independent variables and handles both exact and near collinearity by projecting onto a lower dimensional subspace. Lately also variable selection has been combined with PLS regression in order to get more parsimonious models. In the present study, models found by OLS and PLS regression, both combined with variable selection, are compared with regard to interpretation, response optimisation and prediction, for regular mixtures, mixture -process and crossed mixture data. Examples from sausages and hearth bread production are considered. D
