Owing to its contribution of largest portion of landfill wastes and consumption of about half of mineral resources excavated from nature, construction industry has been pressed to improve its sustainability. Despite an adoption of several waste management strategies, and introduction of various legislative measures, reducing waste generated by the industry remains challenging. In order to understand cultural factors contributing to waste intensiveness of the industry, as well as those preventing effectiveness of existing waste management strategies, this study examines cultural profile of construction industry. Drawing on four focus group discussions with industry experts, the study employs phenomenological approach to explore waste inducing cultural factors. Combining findings from phenomenological research with extant literatures, the study suggests that in order to reduce waste intensiveness of the construction industry, five waste inducing cultural factors need to be changed. These include (i) " make-do " understanding that usually result in " make-do waste " (ii) non-collaborative culture, which results in reworks and other forms of wasteful activities (iii) blame culture, which encourages shifting of waste preventive responsibilities between designers and contractors , (iv) culture of waste behaviour, which encourages belief in waste inevitability, and (v) conservatism, which hinders diffusion of innovation across the industry. Changing these sets of cultural and behavioural activities is not only important for engendering waste management practices; they are requisite for effectiveness of existing strategies. Improvement in the identified areas is also required for overall improvement and general resource efficiency of the construction industry. Thus, this paper advocates cultural shift as a means of reducing waste landfilled by the construction industry, thereby enhancing sustainability and profitability of the industry.

Abstract: The rapid growth of e-commerce is imposing profound impacts on modern society. On the supply side, the emergence of e-commerce is greatly changing the operation behavior of some retailers and is increasing product internationalization due to its geographically unlimited nature. On the demand side, the pervasiveness of e-commerce affects how, where, and when consumers shop, and indirectly influences the way in which we live our lives. However, the development of ecommerce is still in an early stage, and ...

Social networks have been found to play an increasing role in human behaviour and even the attainment of individuals. We present the results of two projects applying SNA to language phenomena. One involves exploring the social propagation of neologisms in a social software (microblogging service), the other investigating the impact of social network structure and peer interaction dynamics on second-language learning outcomes in the setting of naturally occurring face-to-face interaction. From local, low-level interactions between agents verbally communicating with one another we aim to describe the processes underlying the emergence of more global systemic order and dynamics, using the latest methods of complexity science. In the former study, we demonstrate 1) the emergence of a linguistic norm, 2) that the general lexical innovativeness of Internet users scales not like a power law, but a unimodal, 3) that the exposure thresholds necessary for a user to adopt new lexemes from his/...

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have attracted wide popularity as they promise multidimensional benefits and competitive leadership. However complexity and failures of their successful adoption and implementation have stolen the limelight, resulting in considerable literature on understanding the critical success factors (CSFs) or conditions in which the ERP systems could be successfully adopted and implemented. Grounded in innovation diffusion &

In this paper we report evidence on the relationship between trade openness, technology adoption and relative demand for skilled labour in the Turkish manufacturing sector, using firm-level data over the period 1980-2001. In a dynamic panel data setting using a unique database of 17,462 firms, we estimate an augmented cost share equation whereby the wage bill share of skilled workers

Purpose – The present paper seeks to establish, through literature reports, if TQM is still a management theory in vogue or now a management fad. To achieve this, the innovative change process of TQM is examined, along the dimension of creativity, invention, innovation, diffusion and adoption. Design/methodology/approach – The approach for data collection is basically secondary sources. The literature is extensively reviewed to arrive at the position presented in the paper. Findings – From the reviews made it is argued that, although TQM looks faddish in graphical presentation of articles on TQM, it cannot be concluded that it is now a management fad. Though reports on TQM seem to diminish among popular press but academic scholars are still very much engrossed with empirical studies on TQM. This is based on the fact that many organizations still adopt and implement TQM and its diffusion is on the increase globally. Research limitations/implications – The main source of literature fo...

Adoption of IT innovations is attracting increasing attention. Researchers are particularly interested in factors that affect the adoption of IS and IT innovations. Innovation diffusion theory is used frequently to evaluate the effect of perceived innovation attributes and the adoption of innovations. Nevertheless, explanatory power of perceived innovation attributes varies across different innovations. Given the importance of online e-payment to the further development of e-commerce and its importance as a payment innovation, this research examines the adoption of online e-payment by business enterprises using Rogers’ relational model of perceived innovation attributes and rate of adoption. The findings indicate that only perceived compatibility has significant influence on online e-payment adoption of Chinese companies. It is hoped that this research can help other researchers with related statistical procedures and analytical steps in their study of IS/IT adoption using innovation diffusion theory.

Diffusion of innovations plays an important role for incremental change leading to sustained development in all societies. The diffusion of an innovation is in fact determined by a stream of improvements in the performance characteristics of that innovation, its progressive modification and adaptation. The local technological capability and indigenous knowledge can contribute significantly to the process of adaptive improvements. This paper hinges briefly upon the interface between innovation and diffusion and the role of adaptive improvements to this effect in the context of promoting technologies in rural micro-industries. Observations made in the paper are based on a sample survey comprising of three phases undertaken recently on a number of small and medium industries (SMIs) covering various districts of Bangladesh. It is found that accumulated indigenous knowledge embodied in local farmers and artisans play a crucial role in innovation–diffusion interaction.

Huge benefits and usefulness that offered by e-government and increasing number of Internet users Indonesia has raised government of the Republic of Indonesia to issue several policies on e-government development. The government has obligation to deliver better and faster public service through e-government. Since 2003 some e-government policies has been issued by the government but in facts year by year, the global rank of e-government readiness as well as regional rank of Indonesia still in low rank. Some previous studies found that success of e-government implementation is dependent not only government support, but also on citizen’s willingness to accept and adopt e-government services. The research is to find out how the acceptance of Indonesian Internet users to e-government services, in terms of relative advantage, image, compatibility, and ease to use variables. Online survey has been published and collected 751 respondents. There are more than 93 percent of the respondents w...

The wireless cell phone market has experienced phenomenal growth over the last decade. This paper studies the factors that five companies considered important in deciding to deploy wireless cell phone devices, the extent of current use of wireless cell phones, the extent of existing utilization and/or planning for web-enabled cell phone use, the constraining factors in their deployment decisions, how such decisions are made, and how regulation of the wireless industry has affected their decision-making process. The conceptual model combines the TAM and innovation diffusion models, adding the factors of security/privacy and web connectivity. Case study methodology is utilized for five manufacturing and technology firms. A key finding is that the most important decision factors are security/privacy, provision of quality service to customers, web connectivity, and, for one firm, productivity. Many other findings are presented, and the conceptual model is supported by the findings. The ...

This theoretical paper considers the dissemination of CSR practices within organizational fields. It develops propositions linking different prevailing drivers for adoption of a CSR practice with states in its diffusion within the field. Existing explanations from fields such as institutional theory and innovation diffusion suggest that in most cases, a practice is initiated for instrumental and technical reasons, imitated as its benefits become known and institutionalized through mimetic and coercive pressures. We suggest the adoption of CSR practices, however, may follow a different pattern. They are often initiated for idealistic, ethical, or religious reasons, which are endogenous to the adopter, and the economic benefits may be unclear or even believed to be absent. Later adopters are driven by different factors from earlier ones, as the perceptions change regarding the economic benefits, and as the visibility of the practice to outside stakeholders and society at large becomes...

This paper discusses a new service aimed at bridging the digital divide in Brazil through the use of the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) as a means of achieving those localities still not serviced by other broadband technologies. The BLNet service is meant to be particularly suited to contexts where the low income rates hamper the diffusion of other broadband platforms, such as ADSL, cable and satellite, and also MMDS. In order to evaluate the economic viability of the BLNet service, a system dynamics modeling has been implemented. The simulation results suggest that under certain circumstances the BLNet service may be a feasible solution to spread the access to the Internet in regions and localities not yet covered by other technologies.
