There is a conspicuous lack of research on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices undertaken in the United Arab Emirates, more so in the banking sector. This paper attempts to fill the gap by examining the government policies drawn up to support enterprises in their CSR efforts. The paper aims to examine the nature and practices of CSR undertaken by the banking sectors in the UAE. UAE's desire to go beyond being a tourist destination to an international business hub and financial market has resulted in their desire to set up CSR activities. In the UAE the banking sectors are the first to have adopted social responsibility and worked to advance it. Banks like Mashreq, ADCB, and Emirates NBD have actively involved themselves in CSR projects. For this study, ten UAE banks (Islamic and Non-Islamic banks) have been chosen based on purposive sampling to ensure the selected banks are currently or in the recent past involved themselves in CSR projects.

This project focuses on the luxury goods market of United Arab Emirates and its growth factors. A growing economy, high consumption rates, a large, urban population, reduced financial risk, excellent infrastructure, and emerging stylish youth market is driving the luxury goods sector in the region. The Arab Spring has forced many tourists to change their travel plans and the UAE’s political stability coupled with its highly developed retail and hospitality sectors have made it a very attractive destination.
One of the prime factors for the UAE’s emergence as a retail hub is its ‘open for business’ culture, which encourages businesses to set up shop and reap the rewards of a growing economy, High consumption rates, a large, urban population, and reduced political and financial risk are the economical factors that have contributed towards the growth of the luxury goods market of united Arab emirates.
The U.A.E has a strong Tourism industry and excellent infrastructure which has served has strong factors for the growth of the luxury goods market of United Arab Emirates.
There is a huge growth potential for luxury goods in the Middle Eastern region. The most dynamic segments are hard luxury items like real jewellery, watches, handbags and sunglasses.
In the UAE both Men and Women are indulging in luxury purchases. According to Euromonitor Research, The total UAE luxury market was expected to grow more than nine per cent year-on-year in 2012 to total Dhs7.1 billion. Consumers across the globe are increasingly eager to spend money on high quality things which last longer, while UAE residents continue to indulge in luxury gadgets, spirits and jewellery items. Because of high rents in the high-end malls in UAE, retailers are looking forward to set up future ventures in second- and third-tier malls.

This paper outlines the development of family medicine in seven Middle Eastern countries. Some of the first family medicine activity occurred in Turkey in 1961, in Bahrain in 1978, in Lebanon in 1979, in Jordan in 1981, and in Kuwait in 1983. Family medicine programs have also been established in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, and Iraq. In most programs, family medicine training occurs largely in hospitals, even though few Middle Eastern family physicians practice in hospitals after completion of residency training. Thus, there is a need for better outpatient training, but resistance from those responsible for traditional medical education makes it difficult to change the current model of family medicine education. There is also need for better opportunities for professional development after graduation and for establishing research activity in family medicine.

Abstract: Cyberspace has become the new frontier for countries to demonstrate power. Nations that have developed defense tools or those that can successfully launch attacks against adversaries will become the next global superpowers [1], [2]. While cyber threats and attacks by government agencies are well documented, most widespread attacks are done by individuals or hacking groups for personal gains [3], [4]. The UAE has become a major target for cyber conflicts due to increased economic activity, tourism, technology and rise of the oil and gas industry. Furthermore, the wide spread of internet in the region to the tune of 88 % has exposed it to attackers [3]. Recent attacks against Saudi Arabia’s ARAMCO and Qatar RasGas and the Stuxnet attack on the Iranian nuclear plants are often cited as examples [3], [5]. Previous reports show that the UAE Government is set to double expenditure on homeland security [6]. Therefore, we need to assess whether available cyber-security defenses ar...

Pardis Mahdavi’s Crossing the Gulf is based on ethnographic fieldwork in the Arabian Gulf that investigated immobilities and mobilities as well as familial love in the lives of migrant workers. Although her data concentrate mainly on Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), her arguments are relevant to other countries in the area with a signifi- cant presence of domestic workers. The book offers a deeply original reading of migration and intimacy.

The concern about the corporate social responsibility activities which the organizations provide to their society and stakeholders increased as one reason for living in the era of globalization (Chapple & Moon, 2005). The study attempts to provide empirical evidence on the influence of the 2008 financial crisis on the disclosure about CSR among local banks in the United Arab Emirates. It also attempts to investigate the extent of CSR disclosure on these banks. For that reason, the study examined the annual reports of the local banks which work in the UAE in three different years. These years are 2007, 2009 and 2011. Additionally, this paper investigated the factors which influence the extent of CSR disclosure, namely; the number of the board of directors, the size of the bank, leverage ratio and profit of the bank (profitability ratio). Moreover, the study formulated four null hypothesis based on two theories namely stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory. The findings reveal that,...

In The courage to teach: Exploring the inner landscape of a teacher's life, Palmer laments, 'Mesmerized by technology……we dismissed the inner world' (2017). Yet technology (Tech rhtorik) as its etymology shows and Ong reminds us, encourages vibrant forms of expression, not least in a 21 st Century Emirati context (1982). The combination of a digitized voice to communicate an ancient poetic form with a modern twist is present in the Emirates in the form of the transmission of al Nabati. This is one medium that has straddled the centuries through its oral tradition. Pre-Islamic in composition, it has survived, indeed benefited from tribal sparring, as a vibrant art form today. This debating tradition, despite migratory diffusion, language contacts and generational leveling has circumvented what Steiner in 'Human Literacy' called for-a reconstitution of the 'great discourse with the living dead which we call reading' (1967). Using partially literate sources to stay alive in hearts and minds, the technical, ideological and political difficulties identified by Steiner are diminished. Complemented by modern digitization, the live voice in 21 st century communication, therefore, assists continuity with traditional educational methods and enhances their efficacy.Situating the curriculum in socio-cultural practices reduces barriers, increases participation and makes students and staff happier. It also brings in variety, movement and an extra-curricular dimension to study and to the workplace. Emiratis are today effective bilingual communicators, and the community co-translation of this oral medium bridges many cultures and may yet see its wider adoption in the West. In the UAE, despite some local language loss, partly due to the assimilation of Emirati dialects and the adoption of English, this genre has experienced renewed interest through televised, public and private gatherings. Consequently, both traditional and innovative forms of vernacular al Nabati survive, through networks that produce inter-cultural dialogue in World Englishes and Arabics. As a result, internal landscapes are not 'dismissed', but rather global education gives all a voice and shows how popular a cultural 'not merely a linguistic artefact' such poetry is (Sowayan, 2009).

In this study, we compare three desalination based alternatives for water supply in off-grid areas, and assess their environmental footprint. The three options are: (a) a solar still, (b) a photo-voltaic (PV) powered reverse osmosis (RO) unit, and (c) water delivery by truck from a central RO plant. By use of life-cycle analysis (LCA), a comprehensive environmental modeling of the three systems is carried out. The basic systems, components and processes are modeled, and then varied, in order to offer a deeper insight into the robustness of the model. Our findings indicate that energy generation and materials usage are critical parameters when the considered alternative options are compared. Of the three options, PV-RO is found to have the least environmental impact. The usefulness of this study is that it provides policy-makers insights into renewable energy desalination for clean water production and, thus, it promotes the deployment of low-carbon desalination technologies.► Three desalination-based alternatives were assessed for environmental footprint. ► The life-cycle analysis (LCA) approach was used. ► A comprehensive environmental modeling of the three systems is carried out. ► Main finding: PV-RO has the least environmental impact.

With the aim to enhance sustainability in general including walkability, the recent urban forms of the designs of the Emirati neighborhoods have been denser and more compact, if compared with the older design models. While there are various guidelines and regulations related to the microscale walkability measures for the urban design of neighborhoods in the Emirates but unfortunately the macroscale walkability measures have not received similar attention. So, to investigate how would these denser and more compact recent neighborhoods designs better perform regarding walkability macroscale measures, the research utilized the urban modelling interface (UMI) walkability simulation tool to calculate the UMI Walkscores of these designs because it considers almost all macroscale factors including both urban morphology and urban planning measures and it also allows for the customization of the types, required catchment distances, and weights of the significance of locally provided amenities. The UMI Walkscores were calculated for the six recent denser and more compact neighborhoods designs and were compared with the UMI Walkscore for a conventionally designed model of urban sprawling neighborhoods. Unexpectedly, it has been found out that urban compactness per se is not a sufficient design measure for enhancing walkability in local neighborhood designs, where much higher compactness and density have achieved disappointing UMI Walkscores. So, it seems that for the recent neighborhoods' designs, little attention was paid to the impact of the street network connectivity measures of Intersection Density, Block Length and the link-to-nodes ratio, on UMI Walkscores, if compared with the main attention paid to increasing FAR through decreasing plot sizes. Meanwhile, the explicit macroscale urban planning measures including the land-use factors of the types, numbers, and the location of amenities, as well as the implicit factors of their destination and global weights seem to be more influential in enhancing the UMI Walkscores but have been less considered when planning these neighborhoods. So, besides considering well-known macroscale urban morphology aspects of street network connectivity and locational distribution of provided amenities, boosting walkability macroscale measures on the design level requires adopting a set of adequately customized measures including the appropriate values of their global and distribution weights. These walkability design weights should be also resilient and continuously reviewed to satisfy the changing needs of the local communities. Based on its findings, the research proposed a five-actions plan to help boost walkability macroscale measures in the design of local urban communities in the UAE.

The aim of this study is to define the epidemiology of the colorectal cancer in the United Arab Emirates and compare it with the other Gulf States and developed countries. This study is a retrospective descriptive study that includes 114 patients who underwent surgeries for colorectal carcinoma at Al-Ain and Tawam Hospitals in the United Arab Emirates during the period 1985 through to 1998. These patients were under medical follow up for a mean period of 24 months (range 6-120 months) Both univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess predictors of recurrence and survival. The survival curves were computed by using Kaplan-Meier method. Mean annual incidence was 12 patients/year. There were 77 males (67.5%) and 37 females (32.5%). The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 46.6 11.8 years with the median age of 47 years. The mean overall survival time was 63.7 7.7 months. The survival time was shorter for younger patients, those with palliative resection, lymph node me...

Sharia principles imply a mode of organising society and its various
facets, as well as serving as a guide for the conduct of individuals within
the institutional and social context. Accountability to be one of the pillars of environmental ethics within Islam. Another of the most important Islamic concepts is the solidarity of Islamic generations. Thus, the broader environmental dimension related to building is a social concern.
Building standards need to take into account this concern for preserving
sustainability for future societies. Sharia compliant projects should be
permissible business. Prophet Muhammad’s (P.B.U.H.) Hadith hallmarks
the significance of adhering to Islamic legislation and highlights Halal
and permissible business. Therein permissible/Halal business derives its elaboration from Islamic legislation. Sharia principles are often
articulated in broad terms. This has created a license to use discretion on how to apply these principles. Owing to the fact there are different
schools of Islamic jurisprudence, interpretation of dicta are not always
co-terminus. This paper looks into the various components particular to
the discussion on Sharia compliant logistics. In order to discuss the
hypothetical facets involved in the depiction of Sharia compliant logistics for construction, the discussion is broken down to address the values associated with Sharia compliant business and therefore the implications of Sharia compliant construction logistics leads on from there.

This study has been designed to address the issue of the forecasting of the healthcare needs of the United Arab Emirate (UAE) from 1974 to 2011. This includes predicting the health system's need for hospitals and hospital beds, as well as the public health manpower (example, physicians, nurses) requirements. The analysis was based on historical data: the number of hospitals, number of nurses, number of hospital beds, which have been posited as the measures of life expectancy in the Emirate. The study found that, although significant changes designed to enhance public health outcomes in the UAE have been made, beds to population ratio was the most significant factor in enhancing healthcare and the public health.

This work is written by Matthew Gray.
Rentier state theory (RST), which seeks to explain the impacts of external payments—or rents—on state-society relations and governance, has been in wide usage for over two decades, and is still routinely cited by scholars writing on the Gulf or other parts of the world. Its tenets are widely—if by no means unanimously— accepted, and retain a strong validity at the broader level. However, RST has not adapted enough to explain the dramatic changes in the political economies of the Gulf in the past two decades or so, including the responses of Dubai, Bahrain, and more recently Qatar and Abu Dhabi, to globalization, new technologies, freer trade and investments, social changes, and development imperatives. It is argued here that a new phase of RST—“late rentierism”—should be applied to the wealthy Arab Gulf states. The case for late rentierism is made with an emphasis on the shortcomings or oversimplifications of other rentier approaches. This study also describes and explains late rentierism through a discussion and elucidation of its major features and characteristics, including how these vary, or not, from those of other rentier explanations.
