Based on a framework emphasizing the social nature of learning, this research examines a model of how social constructs affect satisfaction within online learning using path analysis for students in higher education. The social constructs evaluated in this study include sense of community (SOC), social ability (SA), perceived ease of use (PEU) and usefulness (PU) of social awareness tools, and self-reported participation (SRP) in online courses. Students' social ability is predicted by perceived ease of use of social awareness ...

This paper has endeavored to find out the role of media to create awareness regarding female hygiene practices during menstruation cycle from the perspectives of females residing in both rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. Based on a review of the previous relevant literature, a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was developed and used to conduct the survey among 200 respondents from four rural and urban areas of Bangladesh to collect primary data for realizing the objectives of this research. The research is descriptive in the manner that attempted to realize its key objective by conducting a comparative analysis of the data collected from the rural and urban respondents. By undertaking descriptive (mean) and enter-method regression analysis using SPSS 24.0, the findings from rural and urban respondents have been analyzed separately to identify the key modes of media playing crucial roles for creating awareness on female hygiene practices. However, after analyzing the secondary an...

Social capital is known as a key wealth underlying the development of nations, providing an environment of mutual respect, reciprocity and community awareness where strong civil societies can flourish. This paper shows how the development of social capital is included as a main topic in an entrepren eurship program for undergraduate students. It constitutes an approach to work on aspects like ethics and social responsibility that is very appropriate in the cont ext of entrepreneurship education. An activity is describe d where students are asked to generate social capital within their own community. In teams, they have to approach the owner or manager of a small business to perform a one-month technological, marketing or administrative work for the benefit of the business. Participants report that a major challenge is to conquer the owner's confidence, even after explaining that no financial compensation is expected by the team and its goal i s simply to generate social capital....

Critical design has been philosophically positioned as that which opposes the affirmative role of design as the status quo, offering itself as social critique located in the formalised spaces of museums and galleries. This paper contests that reasoning by firstly showing that in the contemporary sphere, criticality in design now resides in a more socially aware and humanistically engaged space. Design propositions can be expressed from the perspective of modes of enquiry that ask both What if? and How else? questions in the vein of Malpass and Slotnick. These then propose alternative ways of considering design not as a way of seeking answers but as a way of asking questions. Furthermore, participatory engagement and an understanding of the importance of community involvement in generating solutions have become normalised. This paper addresses this shift in thinking around the role of critical design, questioning how this may be addressed in design education such that it challenges affirmative design and foregrounds social awareness.

Objective
The current study examined the impact of a non-governmental organization’s academic tutoring and mentoring program on the social-emotional learning (SEL) and subjective well-being of 240 marginalized young women.
Participants
One-hundred-fifty-nine currently enrolled 7-12th grade students with a mean age of 16.39, SD=1.55; 40 students who were enrolled in college with a mean age of 20.25, SD=1.57, and 25 who had graduated from college with a mean age of 22.48, SD=2.16 and their leaders participated.
Methods
All participants completed in a survey that assessed the degree of participants’ locus of control, expectations of success (self-efficacy), current goals and career-related aspirations and their satisfaction with their relationships and life in general. Twenty-one of the participants and all leaders also were interviewed.
Results
Regression analyses revealed that both the participants’ self-management and the leader’s locus of control were significant predictors of the participants’ internal locus of control. Congruent with interview findings, latent structural equation analysis revealed that three manifest variables of social-emotional learning, “self-management”, “social awareness”, and “self-efficacy” had direct positive effects on participants’ subjective well-being (i.e., their satisfaction with life and relationships).
Conclusion
Culturally sensitive approaches to mentoring and training are needed and helpful. Future research should be carried out to mitigate design limitations and further the current study’s addition to the body of research on social-emotional learning and well-being.

Traditionally, intelligence was considered to be a mental skill that primarily consisted of two narrow spheres: mathematical / logical and oral / linguistic, or IQ. Howard Gardner expanded this little idea to include many intellectuals. Later, Daniel Goleman introduced a new type of ability, emotional intelligence (EI), the ability to understand personal and others' emotions. The construction of more intelligence, as well as emotional intelligence in particular, has received a lot of attention recently, especially in terms of leadership capacity. There is some evidence that EI traits (e.g., self-awareness, self-control, motivation, public awareness, and relationship management) may be better predictors of leadership performance and success than traditional "intelligence quotient," or IQ.

Leaders have got a significant role to play in all spheres of life. An organization can attain remarkable achievements under a strong leadership; whereas, the presence of unsuccessful leaders can prove to be quite detrimental. The notion that a vital part is played by emotional intelligence (EI) in the effectiveness of leaders has been introduced recently. An emotionally stable professional is able to cope up with imperfection and uncertainty, since he is not very critical and believes in win-win situation. He has the ability to handle every sort of situation whether it is a demanding job, an atrocious boss, or undisciplined subordinates. At present, the definition of leadership has become more people-focused. A person with good understanding of Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ) is expected to be an excellent team person and thus an effective leader. This paper is aimed at unifying the literature that evaluates the possible connection between leadership effectiveness and EI. A survey in the college of Haryana is conducted based on Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue), which is psychometrically certified and provides self-awareness regarding EI. For the same, 50 teachers (leaders and non-leaders) were asked to fill the questionnaire. A SPSS analysis is carried out for evaluating the claims regarding significant relationship of EI with leadership, and to analyse the worth of EI in the success of professional and personal life of a leader. The impact of EI has been analysed on the perception, expression, and management of emotions, adaptability, relationships, stress management, self-motivation, happiness, empathy, and optimism. It is revealed through the results that a positive relationship exists between effective leadership and EI, which is beneficial for all the parties involved in the loop. Moreover, a noticeable difference has been observed in the EIQ rating of leaders and non-leaders in the way they utilize their EI in dealing with their personal matters or interacting with others.

Asperger's Disorder remains an under-diagnosed condition because of clinical unfamiliarity with its adult presentation. As forensic clinicians become familiar with the presentation of Asperger's disorder, it appears that affected individuals are over-represented in forensic criminal settings. Unique features of such persons may heighten their risks for engaging in criminal behavior. Both Theory of Mind deficits and a predilection for intense narrow interests, when coupled with deficient social awareness of salient interpersonal and social constraints on behavior, can result in criminal acts. We discuss comorbidities of forensic relevance. We present several cases that highlight these issues and review the relevant forensic literature. Furthermore, there may be valid questions as to degree of criminal responsibility in such persons. From a neuropsychiatric perspective, these disorders appear to have a biological underpinning for deficits in empathy, a finding that may have im...

The recent years showed a significant increase both in energy costs and social awareness for environmental concerns. In the industrial sector, these aspects affected revenues and sustainability of the most intensive energy plants, such as steel mills. The present paper describes how simulation may powerfully support production planning and the related decisions. The application proposed refers to a steel plant feeding its Continuous Casting line by an electric Arc Furnace. The optimization of the production plan is pursued by an objective function which takes into account both traditional targets (e.g., lead times and due dates) and the need for an efficient use of energy. To this end, a discrete/continuous si mulation model was developed: stochastic laws, suitable for temperature variations modelling, were implemented to forecast energy requirements at the Ladle Furnaces and/or the Vacuum Degasser. Final results showed how the simulation-based Decision Support System may lead to a ...

Critical exploration of socio-political issues has been a topic strongly carried out in English classrooms in the last decades. This article is the result of a research study that shows what the use of political cartoons reveals about the promotion of critical reading in an EFL classroom at a private university in Colombia. The study was developed with fourteen students under a qualitative case study method. Workshops, teacher journals and focus-group interviews were used to collect data. The emerging categories show the positive results of using political cartoons and the change that the students had in their thoughts and actions in both the academic and social context. In the results, the students portray how they have perceived the ELT classroom, the importance of being a critical reader of texts and contexts, and how the different activities helped them construct their own critical awareness concerning social and political issues.

We’re currently living in the Anthropocene, a geological age in which human-environment interaction utterly affects the
biosphere balance. As stated by both Paul J. Crutzen (2000) and Christian Schwägerl (2014), with the term “Anthropocene”
we refer not only to a new environmental condition but to a new paradigm in which nature and culture are seen as a
component of the same system and not anymore as independent categories.
Although in the last decades the environmental consciousness has significantly increased, we are still in need to develop
new strategies to face the actual critical global condition characterized by lack of resources, progressive temperature
increase and sea level rise. From our perspective to increase the effectiveness of sustainable practices and processes,
a higher level of social awareness and civic engagement has to be reached. With this in mind, we propose a two-sided
analysis based on the approach of ecological thinking through serious gaming and bio-digital prototyping to generate
new bottom-up strategies. The category of serious game (Ulicsak & Wright, 2010) represents a still relatively understudied
space of opportunities to develop new tools for scientific analysis and methodologies regarding urban design and
planning strategies and to involve different actors in developing more significant problem-solving means. On the other
side, bio-digital prototyping, through the hybridization of organic and non-organic matter, opens new research fields
to induce new behavioral patterns through human interaction and, therefore, to generate a sense of empathy between
anthropic and biological environment.
Alongside the theoretical frame, we will present two case studies - “Solve the Crisis! An alternate reality game to tackle
Cape Town’s water crisis” and the biomimetic structure “Physarum Shelter” - to highlight how serious games and bioprototyping can be used to empower the ecological consciousness and lead to more integrated design strategies.

In this paper, we analyze the market for organic products in eight European countries, based on differences in their respective value systems. With a significant sample of 8014 consumers, we first identify international segments in the European organic products market using the Values Theory. Then we apply the Theory of Planned Behavior to examine how European consumers use attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control to form their purchase intention for organic products. Results show that subjective norms are the main underlying factor driving consumer behavior concerning these products. This effect is higher for the group of countries whose citizens score higher on Schwartz's value scale. In this segment of countries, people are more likely to be affected by what others think, which means that the best approach is to increase social awareness of the relevance of purchasing organic products. Organic products represent a potentially profitable opportunity for companies with an international horizon. Results are also useful for consumers and public administrations.► European segments are identified in the organic market using the Values Theory. ► Subjective norms are the main factor driving consumer behavior on organic products. ► This effect is higher for countries that score higher on Schwartz's value scale.

There is an increased realization that computer animation models proving to be an ef ective tool in mass communication. In an ef ort to test the ef icacy of animated model, an empirical study was conducted at the doctoral level and this paper is meant to present the results pertaining only to animated model vis a vis the awareness level among the participants, as the research work covered other related objectives too. It was found there was an improved understanding among students after watching animated videos pertaining to health and hygiene. Paired Sample T test showed a statistically significant improvement in the scores obtained by the students after watching the animated videos. Further designing a new computer animated 2 D model for the same social awareness topics with inputs from the student respondents and incorporating the principles of animation and design was carried out.

Gaining World Heritage (WH) status inserts a historic site onto a global stage, providing a series of benefits such as access to international technical and financial resources, touristic promotion, and stimulus to the local economy. However, receiving this title may do more harm than good, as it upsets the delicate balance between promoting and preserving the historic place. Under political and economic pressure, the title may affect the local social dynamic and contribute to weakening cultural integrity and local identity, consequently undermining livelihoods. In Latin American contexts, this contradiction can be detrimental to local sustainability. Are people prepared to defend their heritage? How do local inhabitants and other involved parties perceive the WH status? What needs to be done to improve social participation aiming to reinforce identities, capaciting and empowering local communities so that they can better practice their role in the process of preservation? Addressing these questions is the purpose of this article.

One of the goals of education is to create responsible citizens who can understand and respond to problems in their societies adequately. Such acts of responsibility may need knowledge, ability to think critically about the problem and some action towards a possible solution. Previous research shows that forest fires in Tanzania are serious social problem. Adequate education about this problem does not take place because of lack of number of teachers required and lack of qualification among the teachers. This study used ICT media ...

Descriptive Survey Method has been adopted for the conduct of the study. Emotional Competency Inventory for Teachers (Balasubramanian and Abilash Babu, 2009) has been used to collect the required data from the sample chosen. The inventory contains 20 positive items and 5 negative items. The number of items selected for the inventory falling under four major dimensions viz. Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management. In line with the Stratified Random Sampling Technique, 50 Principals of Colleges of Education from three districts of Tamilnadu state have been chosen for the study. Descriptive, differential and correlation analysis have been undertaken for data analysis adopting appropriate statistical techniques. It is found that there is significant difference at 0.05 level between the means of the scores of the Principals of the Colleges categorized based on their marital status with regard to their scores on Self Awareness, as one of the components of Emotional Competence. The mean value of the unmarried Principals has been found to be greater than that of married Principals. Hence, it is concluded that the unmarried principals possess more of Self-Awareness when compared to their married counter parts. It is also found that there is no significant difference between the means of the Principals of Colleges of Education on the scores of the most of the dimension of emotional competence of the principals irrespective of their sex and marital status as well as the locality and type of the institution. It is also found that there is significant and positive correlation at 0.01 level among different components of Emotional Competence viz. Self-Awareness and Self-Management & Relationship-Management, Self-Management and Social Awareness & Relationship-Management, Social Awareness and Self-Management & Relationship-Management. However, there is no significant relationship between Self-Awareness and Social Awareness, Social Awareness and Relationship Management.

In this paper we address the problem of how to make conversational agents socially aware. State-of-the-art conversational agents cannot deal with multi-user situations where the user-system dialog is interleaved with discussions between users. We describe the development of an algorithm for determining addressee-hood of user utterances. The algorithm makes errors in determining addressee-hood for individual utterances, classifying utterances intended for the system as utterances intended for the other user and the other way around, creating unexpected situations in the agent’s behaviour. This raises the question of how to design the conversational agent so that the users understand why the agent behaves in particular ways. We describe a study aimed at obtaining guidelines for the design of a socially aware conversational agent. We conclude that principles for modelling the behaviour of the agent are to be derived from theories about human communication rather than from theories about human-computer interaction.

The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of the roles and responsibilities of dental education in serving the public good, and the extent to which they are being met, from the vantage point of leaders at the university and state level. Five questions were developed to gather views on dental education's success in meeting the expectations and needs of the public. Fifty-one interviews were conducted with leaders at seven institutions and with public officials in six states. Overall, dental education was perceived as fulfilling its public purpose in promoting oral health, providing access to care, and conducting relevant research. However, significant areas for improvement were noted including better communication of accomplishments to key stakeholders, graduating a more socially aware, culturally sensitive, and community-oriented dental practitioner, and being a committed partner with other community leaders in improving access to care for all citizens. Current program...
