This paper describes the analysis of L-band radiometric measurement data gathered with the synthetic aperture radiometer HUT-2D during several ground-based and airborne measurement campaigns. The radiometric data are analyzed from the instrument's performance point of view, aiming to verify the theoretical performance of an instrument of this kind and to assess the performance of the HUT-2D radiometer system in particular. The data sets considered for the study consist of measurements of well-known natural targets, such as cosmic background radiation, and measurements of pure water scenes, the brightness temperature of which is possible to model based on in situ measurements. We define four figures of merit, which are applicable for synthetic aperture radiometers. These are radiometric resolution, image bias, pixel-to-pixel random error, and temporal stability. Then, we use the selected data sets to assess these in the case of HUT-2D. The experimental results are discussed and compared to the theoretical values, where applicable. Also, we discuss possibilities to improve the presented performance. The main results of this paper are the consolidated performance parameters of the HUT-2D instrument. We study and discuss the properties of the error components related to the technology in a general level, and study the scalability of the errors as a function of the measured targets. In particular, the stability of the direction-dependent error component is pointed out, and a mitigation guideline is proposed.

Topic detection with large and noisy data collections such as social media must address both scalability and accuracy challenges. KeyGraph is an efficient method that improves on current solutions by considering keyword cooccurrence. We show that KeyGraph has similar accuracy when compared to state-of-the-art approaches on small, well-annotated collections, and it can successfully filter irrelevant documents and identify events in large and noisy social media collections. An extensive evaluation using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk demonstrated the increased accuracy and high precision of KeyGraph, as well as superior runtime performance compared to other solutions.

With this paper we aimed at addressing the problem of data diversity in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) research. We present a literature review based on the heterogeneity of findings about the characterization of the disorder, subtypes differentiation, sources of information, sex differences and comorbidities. In an effort to understand the variety of findings, we underline potential explanations, such as the sample's heterogeneity or the multiplicity of methods and procedures, among others. The review conducted was primarily based on PsycInfo and ERIC databases, but also, on PubMed and Elsevier Direct.

The World Trade Center attack, though constituting an unprecedented disaster, nevertheless generated many of the features seen in other disasters in the U.S. Such features include the convergence of volunteers and donations of supplies, which are well- documented in the literature. Their appearance typically is problematic, since they both introduce needed resources and present additional management challenges for public officials

The first step has been taken in the effort to develop a microscopic simulation model of mixed motor vehicle and bicycle traffic over an entire network. The primary objective was to develop the main algorithm of BICycle SIMulator and translate it into a working computer program. To achieve the goal, the gaps in the existing literature were filled by data collected at the University of Delaware campus in Newark. An equation of mixed bicycle and motor vehicle following was developed and used for the representation of longitudinal interaction of vehicles. The program was implemented in C+plus; programming language and tested on real-world data. The resulting software is the first in the world to allow the inclusion of bicyclists in the analysis of urban transportation by the means of microscopic simulation.

The aim of this study was to determine learning styles of gifted students in Turkey. The sample of the study consists of 386 (Female=164, Male=222) gifted and 410 (Female=209, Male=201) non-gifted primary-second phase students. The Learning Style Scale developed by Sever (2008) and Data Collection Form developed by the researchers were used as data gathering tools. According to the analysis of data, significant differences were found between the gifted students’ learning styles and non-gifted students’ learning styles. Additionally, significant differences were also founded among learning styles of the gifted students taking their gender and grade levels into consideration. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Although it is widely accepted that music can be used as a tool to communicate symbolic meaning, there has been little inquiry into how music is consumed to represent the self in social interaction. This paper seeks to provide new insights into the ways in which individuals symbolically consume recorded music. Through the interpretation of phenomenological data gathered from 16

Abstract: Higher Education is increasingly relying on e-learning as a means of providing students with teaching and learning resources. Almost inevitably, this means that students interact with these learning resources through the medium of the computer screen. Although there have been significant advances in the design and implementation of online resources, exactly how students interact with these resources is a relatively new field of research. In this feasibility study students were asked to interact with a virtual learning environment, i.e. Blackboard, as well as Internet based resources, i.e. Ingenta and Wikipedia. Specifically, the students were asked to find the answer to a question provided, e.g. “what is classical conditioning?”orto locate a body of research related to a given topic, e.g. “theories of forgetting”. As they searched for the information the eye movements of the students were recorded using a Tobii X50 eye tracking system. The data gathered was analyseddynamic...

This paper explores internal factors influencing student learning of programming. This is based on literature relating to student learning and learning of programming. Two dimensions: motivation and capability are used as a framework to explore the data gathered from a study of first year undergraduate IT programming students at an Australian University. The authors propose that the exploration conducted in

This paper presents an extension to the technology acceptance model (TAM) and empirically examines it in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation environment. The study evaluated the impact of one belief construct (shared beliefs in the benefits of a technology) and two widely recognized technology implementation success factors (training and communication) on the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use during technology implementation. Shared beliefs refer to the beliefs that organizational participants share with their peers and superiors on the benefits of the ERP system. Using data gathered from the implementation of an ERP system, we showed that both training and project communication influence the shared beliefs that users form about the benefits of the technology and that the shared beliefs influence the perceived usefulness and ease of use of the technology. Thus, we provided empirical and theoretical support for the use of managerial interventions, such a...

The study compared IAQ, thermal quality, and lighting quality between 5 different office types in LEED-certified buildings in relation to employees' environmental satisfaction and their job performance. This was to provide workplaces where workers in each specific office environment could be provided with appropriate office settings regarding these IEQ criteria when organizations comply with LEED standards. The five types of office included private enclosed, private shared, open-plan with high cubicle over 5′, open-plan with low cubicle lower than 5′, and open-plan with no partitions (bullpen) offices. The study found IAQ enhanced workers' job performance in enclosed private offices more than both high cubicles and low cubicles. All four office types had higher satisfaction with the amount of light and visual comfort of light as well as more enhancement with job performance due to lighting quality than high cubicles. There was no difference in thermal quality between the five office types. IAQ and lighting quality were not different between enclosed private, enclosed shared, and bullpen office types, either. The study findings suggest a careful workplace design considering the height of partitions in LEED-certified buildings to improve employee's environmental satisfaction and job performance.

Military geographical intelligence analysis in support of both tactical and strategic operation is a process that is associated with data gathering, processing, analyzing, and distribution. It is an important activity, carried out before the preparation of a military operation. A system that can assist in arranging support, exercise analysis training, and manage knowledge on military geographical intelligence have always been ultimate goals for both military intelligence units and intelligence officers alike. Therefore, it can be seen that research into the military geographical intelligence system is a critical and important research subject. This research investigates military geographical intelligence systems as a problem-solving procedure in terms of observing the military geographical intelligence operational procedure, generating situation analysis, and generating planning process. This paper intends to present a knowledge-based architecture that incorporates the function of case base, heuristic base, and rule base for implementing the military geographical intelligence system on Intranet.
